rather than cold water, pour in gently at first
and keep exposed skin and your face away.
Otherwise the still hot tank walls can spit
drops of very hot water or steam spray.
• Do not put any detergent or chemical sub-
stance in the boiler. Water by its nature con-
tains magnesium, mineral salts and other de-
posits which in hard water areas can
contribute to limescale build up in the boiler. In
very hard water areas we recommend the use
of our KALSTOP FP 2003, a special natural-
base decalcifier which inhibits and breaks
down limescale. This is a preventive against
scale build-up and protects the metal walls of
the boiler. KALSTOP is available from Polti
dealers or by mail-order from your Polti Ser-
vice Centre.
• Make sure the patented safety cap is fully and
correctly screwed on, otherwise you may ex-
perience steam escaping from around the

1. Unscrew the safety cap (A) and fill the boiler
with 3 litres of normal tap water using the fil-
ling bottle (V) (fig.3). Ensure the water level
does not exceed the MAX. indicator on the
water level window (J).
Normal tapwater can be used. However, as
hard water by its nature contains limestone,
which may cause a build-up of limescale in
the boiler, in hard water areas we recom-
mend the use of our natural-base decalcifier
KALSTOP, available from Polti dealers or by
mail order from your Polti Service Centre.
2. Retighten the cap fully and carefully. Make
sure the patented safety cap (A) is fully and
correctly screwed on, otherwise you may ex-
perience steam escaping from around the
cap.
3. Connect the power supply cable (M) into an
earthed power supply of the correct voltage.
IMPORTANT: always make sure that the
“continuous steam jet” button (S) is not swit-
ched on.
4. Switch on the boiler and iron by pressing the
switches (E) and (F). The pressure indicator
light (G) and the “iron heating” indicator light
(R1) will light up (fig.4).
WARNING: Do NOT under any circumstances
put or leave the filling bottle in the water filling
aperture of the appliance when the appliance is
connected to the mains electricity supply. Dan-
ger of burns!

Check the manufacturer’s label on the garment,
and interpret the symbol on the label as follows:
STEAM IRONING
1a.For STEAM ironing, turn the dial (Q) and set
the iron to its MAXIMUM travel on the “COT-
TON - LINEN” steam position (fig.5).
NB Set at its maximum, do NOT set
against the picture of iron on the dial (Q).
Most fabric types, other than delicates can
be STEAM-ironed at this temperature,
please consult the garment label. If you want
to DRY iron, set the dial (Q) to the required
temperature for the fabric as shown on the
dial.
Nb fabric indications on the dial are for
DRY ironing, for STEAM ironing set at
maximum travel as explained above.
2a. Wait for the pressure indicator light (G) to go
out (about 15 minutes). Push the button (R)
on the iron to release bursts of steam from
the holes on the soleplate. Release the but-
ton and the steam flow stops (fig.6).
NOTE: during initial operation of the iron, a
few drops of water mixed with steam may
come out of the soleplate until the tempera-
ture stabilises. It is advisable to direct the
first jets of steam onto an old cloth until a
uniform stable jet of steam is obtained.
RECOMMENDED TECHNIQUE for STEAM iro-
ning with Polti iron is to APPLY steam (button R)
on the upstroke, then release button (R) (so no
steam) for the backstroke, so reclosing the fi-
bres, preventing oversteaming and wetness.
3a. In order to have a continuous steam jet,
move the continuous steam jet button (S)
forwards. Steam will keep on coming out,
even if you release the button. To stop the
steam flow, move the continuous steam jet
button (S) backwards (fig. 7).
DRY IRONING
If you need to DRY iron (ONLY) (NOT steam iro-
ning), press the iron switch (F) and adjust the
iron temperature by turning the dial (Q) to the
temperature required for the fabric (as shown on
the dial).
NOTE:
• The steam pressure indicator light (G) may go
on and off from time to time during use of Va-
porella. This indicates the machine maintai-
ning the correct and constant pressure and is
quite normal.
• Should steam fail to exit from the iron or from
the stain remover gun, check that the indicator
lights (G) and (H) are switched off, that water
is present inside the boiler and that the steam
adjustment knobs (B) and (C) are open.

• By adjusting the iron steam knob (B) it is pos-
sible to alter the quantity of steam depending
on the type of fabric to iron (more or less deli-
cate).
• By turning the control knob in an anti-
clockwise direction the jet of steam increases.
To reduce it, turn the knob in a clockwise di-
rection (fig.8).
• The same operating principle is also applica-
ble to the stain remover gun steam adjustment
knob (C). The quantity of steam must be adju-
sted according to the fabric from which to re-
move the stain.

In order to act properly on stains, it is important
to be able to distinguish them.
Identifying the stain means understanding its ori-
gin and age. This allows you to avoid unsucces-
sful attempts which often, as well as not produ-
cing an optimal result, can also be damaging.
“THE AGE”
All RECENT stains can be removed with the
stain remover gun without having to wash the
item. As they get older, stains attach themselves
to the fabric’s fibres and in some cases, steam
cannot remove them. In such cases it is neces-
sary to wash the item. If the recently stained fa-
brics are treated immediately with mineral water,
the stain does not attach itself to the fibres and
subsequent steam cleaning with the stain remo-
ver gun will prove quicker and more effective.
“THE ORIGIN”
Stains are produced from substances of various
origins and according to the base of the predo-
minant substance they can be classified as ha-
ving the following origin:
• ANIMAL (protein base): soup and meat
sauce, milk and cream, blood, sweat, egg,
urine, vomit.
• VEGETABLE (tannin base): beer, coffee, cho-
colate, Coca-Cola, fruit, wine, tea.
• VARIOUS (specific stains): paint, lipstick, biro,
tar, rust, perfume.
To better identify the origins of the staining sub-
stance you can help yourself by using your
senses. The shape, touch, colour and location
are very important (see TAB.1).

To obtain steam from the stain remover gun,
press button (U). The powerful jet of steam pro-
duced can be used effectively as follows, depen-
ding on the type and size of stain.
• If operating on a SUPERFICIAL STAIN, direct
the jet of steam to skim the fabric in proximity
of the stain in order to project the dirt with the
pressure against a cloth used to collect it
(fig.9).
• If operating on a DEEP STAIN, turn the item
inside out and act on the fabric from the in-
side. After resting it on a sponge, direct the jet
of steam onto the stain so that the dissolved
dirt can exit from the opposite side of the fa-
bric and be absorbed by the sponge (fig.10).
• Simple methods are often the most effective:
a shot of steam can sometimes be sufficient to
eliminate even the most resistant stains.
W
WA
AR
RN
NI
IN
NG
G
• To avoid halos around the stain it is advisable
to point the steam jet nearby the borders of
the stain first and then towards the center of it
gradually.
• Make sure that the stain has been completely
removed from the fabric before ironing it, as
the iron’s heat fixes the stain permanently.
• To obtain an even better result, it is advisable
to perform the cleaning operations on an iro-
ning table equipped with a suction board.
• DO NOT use the steam on bloodstains as
blood coagulates with heat thus fixing the
stain permanently.
• Should the stain persist, do not dry the item
before acting a second time. Should the stain
persist even after the second attempt, it is ad-
visable to contact a qualified dry cleaning cen-
tre.
• A summary table accurately classifying the
types of stains in relation to the advisable
cleaning method is included as part of these
instructions (TAB.2).
• Always do a test on a non visible part of the
item first or on a sample.
• When dealing with coloured items, it is advisa-
ble to test the colour resistance on a section
of non visible material.
• Use moderately with silk items and acetate
based fibres.
• Never leave the gun within the reach of chil-

The appliance is equipped with a safety cap,
which prevents opening of the boiler as long as
there is any pressure remaining inside. This is
an important and indispensable safety device,
and it is necessary to follow certain procedures
when re-filling the boiler. ‘Water out’ is indicated
by a warning light (H), and by an audible alarm
signal from the machine.
Whenever you have used up all the water in the
boiler, preceed as follows:
1b. Switch off the boiler switch (E)
2b. Press the steam button (R) on the iron and
the steam button (U) on the stain remover
gun, until steam is exhausted.
3b. Switch OFF the iron switch (C) .
4b. Disconnect the power supply cable (M) from
the mains.
5b. Unscrew anti-clockwise the patented safety
cap (A)
6b. Wait for a few minutes to allow the boiler to
cool down.
7b. When cool, proceed to carefully refill the boi-
ler as described in paragraph 1 of the sec-
tion “Preparation for Use”. If refilling the boi-
ler when not completely cooled, we
recommend that you carefully pour only very
small quantities of water at each pouring, so
as to avoid spitting from the boiler and cover
exposed skin and face whilst filling.
