1 Introduction
1.1 Overview
MU (Merging unit) provides a group of current sample values of current and voltage that
are synchronous with time for intelligent electronic devices. The main function of it is to
obtain the instantaneous value of current and voltage from the electrical power system
according to collecting (or combining) the output signals from several mutual inductors,
and to transfer the value to electrical measurement equipment of electric power system
and protecting equipment using a certain qualitative data. Because MU carries important
functions for collecting, combining and transferring the front data of electric system
secondary equipment, the effective test for function and performance of it has been a
significant part of testing work for Intelligent Station.
POM2-3333 MU test specializes in MU subject test. Aiming at Intelligent Station’s present
difference of the real project’s design and suggestion, this device can give effective tests
for electronic type mutual inductor input, EMS type mutual inductor input and both type
hybrid input MU.Afterwards it can satisfy all kinds of test requests for MU in real projects.
1.2 Standards

1.3 Main functions
Accuracy test
In the condition of not changing any connection, it can give test to all the output
of MU, amplitude error of current channel, phase error, frequency error and
composite error, then assess the results and give a conclusion of the test
automatically.
Message response time test
It can give test to the time of message response and the error of response time
(absolute signal delay).
Abnormal SMV and GOOSE analysis
It can do real-time analyze and statistics for the exceptions that will influence
MU’s normal work, such as frame drop, disordering, repeat, out-of-step, SN
deviation, and abnormal quality etc.
It can do real-time analysis and statistics for the exceptions that will influence
MU’s proper work, such as time of GOOSE deflection, time of TEST deflection,
Sq loss, Sq repeating, St loss, St repeating, code error, invalid survival time,
communication-timeout recovering time, and communication-outage recovering
time, etc.
SMV frame Interval analysis
Do real-time statistic on SMV interval.
The synchronization performance test
Provide a function of clock test, and high-precision test to MU’s time precision
and time accuracy.
The voltage concatenation and switching test
Can send disconnector place according GOOSE message or binary contact, and
finish the test of PT voltage concatenation of MU and transferring of voltage.
SMV waveform
Draw the sample value packet in real-time wave form using for analyze current,
voltage, phase, etc.
Power measuring error test
Theoretical value, measured value and error value that all include active power,
reactive power, apparent power, pharos, power factors.

SMV and GOOSE analysis
Analyze the SMV and GOOSE.
1.4 Technical features
1) Available for different kinds of test in MU.
All can be tested: Electronic transformer and digital quantity input of MU,
Electronic transformer and simulation the consolidation of small signal input of
MU, Analog input the merger of the conventional transformer unit, mixed input of
MU.
2) High-precision of analog output
Six channels of current and vulgate are better than ±0.05% in output accuracy
outputting by the analog routine transformer.
12 channels of small-signal vulgate output are better than ±0.2% in output
accuracy outputting by the analog consolidated instrument.
3) Accuracy test (ratio error and phase displacement etc.), available for
synchronization and interpolation methods
In allusion to the service condition using MU in practice, receiving system will
use the synchronous data calculating mode for network port data and use
interpolation calculating mode for point to point data. To ensure the precision’s
absolutely accurate in networking mode and point to point mode of
MU,POM2-3333 can do the precision test in synchronous method and
interpolation method.。
4) High-precision of message time synchronization
The appliance receives the digital message then time scale in high-precision
hardware according to FPGA, adds up the sample value packet’s sending
discrete degree accurately and computationally.
The precision of hardware timing is better than 40ns.
5) High-precision for MU delay test
Providing two mode of delay test for MU makes the precision much higher.
6) Simulate the clock tester
Can simulate the clock tester and test the punctuality error and the pair error
accurately.

3. Software instruction
PowerTestCut for POM2-3333 is designed to make test items on digital input MUs, low
level input Mus, analog input Mus and mixed input of electronic transformer.
According to different types of MUs, the following items can be made: SMV accuracy,
SMV channel time-delay, power error, SMV and GOOSE analysis, etc.
Run the software on PC after installation, it is the main interface showing in figure 3-1.
According to the MU type, select the correct output type in the interface A1-A5. In figure
3-2, it enters into the testing page.
All the test items can be completed in this testing page.

In the test page, there are mainly two parts: the settings zone and testing data zone.
In the setting zone, it is for the testing settings.
In the testing data zone, there are the real-time data during the test.According to different
test functions, there are items such as accuracy, message integrity, clock synchronization,
SMV waveform and output power, etc.

3.1.2 Test configuration
3.1.2.1 IEC Configuration (MU input)
Press in the toolbar and configure with following steps:
Step 1: Select the output type
Analog output, IEC61850-9-2, IEC 60044-8 (State grid), Analog + IEC61850-9-2,
analog + IEC60044-8 (State grid)
Select the MU type to make choice. If the same module type is chosen as the MU
sampling input type, it is not necessary to choose it again, only to keep the same
output type.
When the analog output is select, then go ahead with step 2.
If the selected output includes IEC61850-9-2 or IEC60044-8 (State grid), the
communications parameters and channels should be confirugred in the
corresponding message. After the configuration, continue with step 2. Please refer to
the configuration instruction in appendix: The configuration for sending messages.
Step 2: Set the ration in each voltage and current output channel
The voltage, current channel and the group number are corresponding to the
channels in figure 3-2. While setting ratio, please set the corresponding voltage/
current’s ratio. Please refer to the channel allocation in part 3.1.2.2.
3.1.2.2 Message receive type and channel configuration (MU output)

Step 1: Select the message receive type
IEC61850-9-2, IEC60044-8.
Select it according to the message output. Please note the wiring connection for
IEC61850-9-2 and IEC60044-8 is different from that in hardware. Please refer to the
hardware structure in part 2.1.
Step 2: Map the message channel
Press channel configuration to import SCD file by clicking “import SCD file” in the
below figure. The software will automatically match between MU output channel and
input control channel.

If some channels cannot be configured correctly, or there is no SCD file, the user can
manually input channel number and configuration it.
The “Sel” is used for testing the channel and fill the report.
The “Accuracy class” is for judging the accuracy test result. When the testing
accuracy is within the range, the test result shows in blue; if it exceeds the range, the
result will show in red. Please refer to the judgement guide in Appendix C Accuracy
Measurement Error Judgement.

3.1.3 Start test
3.1.3.1 Parameter
Choose the primary or secondary parameter
Convert between the primary and secondary parameter according to the
PT/CT ratios.
Set voltage and current output value.
Select test method
The synchronization and interpolation can be used.
Note: For the synchronization, the tester has to be synchronized with MU.
For the interpolation, it is not necessary to depend on the time signal.
Set testing times.
3.1.3.2 Start test
Press button on the test interface or on the tester POM2-3333 or F2 on the
externally PC to run the test

3.1.3.4 Test result
After the above test, press to get result.
3.1.3.5 Test completed
When the icon turns in grey, it means the SMV accuracy has been
completed. Please repeat the steps 3.1.3.1 to 3.1.3.5 to finish the rest accuracy test
points.
When the accuracy test has been completed, press “ESC” in the software or on the
tester or “ESC” on the external PC to stop the test.
If there are new test items to be tested (The wiring connection is the same), the previous
steps can be omitted, only need to switch Testing data observation. If there are new test
items to be added, press after the new testing page is switched.
Note: After above test, the button will turn grey. If this test result is not
satisfied to have a test again, press button after the software is
stopping. Then the button will be available. Press this button again to
restart the test and obtain the result.
3.1.3.6 Report
When all test items are finished, or the selected items are completed, press to get
the word format report.
3.1.4 Notices
1. Synchronization: The optic receiving port connects with the MU’s sending port.
Interpolation: The optic receiving port connects with the MU’s
2. The IRIG-B code is positive code that can simultaneously synchronize with busbar MU
and linear busbar.
3. There are two ports for IRIG-B code to synchronize with busbar MU and linear busbar.
4. When it is using synchronization, we have to ensure the time base between

POM2-3333 and MU.
5. If the SMV cannot be received by MU, we have to compare the data between
POM2-3333 sending message and MU’s configurations, especially for IEC60044-7/8, the
baud rate, SMV rate and MU keep the same.
6. The install software and SCD file are suggested to be copied in disc D. The Disc D is
under protection, so the files will not be lost.
