1.1 Introduction
This chapter providestheoutline features andoperation of theCavaliere 142 including the BIOS
Setup program and other system options.
The Cavaliere 142 notebook offers the latestin advanced portable computing and multimedia
technology that even outperforms mostdesktop computers. It incorporatesthelatest Intel
Pentium-IV PGA Processor or Intel Celeron PGA processor and fullycompatibleswith an
entirelibraryof PC softwarebased on operatingsystemssuch asMS-DOS, Windows 2000/
XP. Italsoruns on futureversions of Windows. It comes witha built-in keyboard, glide pad
pointing device, sound system, PCMCIA slots, USB (Universal SerialBus) port, IEEE 1394
port, advancedpowermanagement andmore new multimediafeatures.

1.4 QuickTour ofthe Notebook
Please takea moment tobecome familiar with the location andpurpose of everycontrol, the
LED statuspanel, connectors and ports, whichare illustrated in this section. It is
recommended to firstgo throughthe User Guide of the notebook, which is shipped together
with thenotebook for information on how to operateits features.
1.4.1 The Inside of the Notebook
To open the LCD cover of the notebook, find the coverlatchlocated at the frontcenter of the
LCD cover. Push the latch to the right toreleaseand tilt theLCD cover up. Inside,you will
see the LCD displaypanel, keyboard, touch pad, status LED, and power switch.

The notebookcomputer comes with acolor LCD that you can adjust for a
comfortableviewingposition. The LCD canbe 14.1" TFT color LVDS with
1024x768 XGA (Extended Graphics Array) or 1400x1050 SXGA+ resolution

1.5 Notebook Accessories and SystemOptions
Itis also importantto understand theaccessories thatcomealongwiththenotebookand the
options for fullyutilizing the capabilities of the computer. This section describes brieflywhat
these accessories and options are.
1.5.1 AC Adapterand Power Cord
The AC Adaptersupplies externalpower to yourcomputer and atthe sametimecharges the
internal battery pack. The AC adapter hasanauto-switching design that can connectto any
100VAC ~ 240VAC power outlets. Connect theadapterto the AC wall outlet usingthe power
cord. You justchange the powercord ifyou are goingto use your notebook inother countries
with differentconnector outlets. When you connectthe AC adapter, it charges the battery
whether or notthe notebook computer is poweredon. There is anLED ontheAC adapter to
indicate if DC power is alreadyavailable.
1.5.2 BatteryPack
Asidefrom the AC adapter, yourcomputer canalso be powered through the internalbattery
pack. Thebattery pack uses rechargeable Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery cells that providelong
computing hours whenfullycharged andpowermanagement enabled. You should always
leave thebattery insideyour computereven whenusingtheAC adapteras it also acts as a
back-up power supplyin case powerfromtheAC adapter is cutoff. Itis also veryimportant
tohave the batterypackalways charged to preventbatterycelldegradation.
1.5.3 Internal Modem Module
The notebookallows you toinsert aproprietaryinternal 56Kbps-modemcardto the notebook
found on theundersideof thenotebook. Theinternal modemcard supports onlyfaxanddata
communication and isV.90-compliant. You connectthe telephone linetotheRJ-11 jack
found on the rear side of the notebook.
1.5.4 Internal Ethernet LANModule
This notebook comes with an optional10Base-T/100Base-TXLAN module that supports data
transfer rates at 10Mbps and can be up to 100Mbps.

1.5.5 DVD-ROM Drive
Other thanthe internal CD-ROM drive, the notebook also providesoptional factorybuilt-in
DVD-ROM drive. DVD-ROM drives arealso backward compatiblewithCD-ROM, so you
canalso use anyaudioCDs, video CDs, photo CDs, and CD-R. Using a software MPEG-
2/DVD program, thenotebook canplayback anycommercialDVD movietitles.
1.6 System BIOS SETUP Program
Your computeris likely to havebeen properlysetup and configured byyourdealer priorto
delivery. However, you mayfind itnecessaryto usethecomputer’s BIOS (Basic Input-
OutputSystem) Setup programto change systemconfiguration information, such as the
current date andtime, or yourhard disk drivetype. The Setup programcan be accessed when
you power on the system andpressingthe <F2> function key.
The settings thatyou specifywithin theSetup programarerecordedin aspecialareamemory
called the CMOS RAM. This memoryis backed up by a batteryso that is will notbeerased
when youturn off or resetthe system. Whenever you turn on the computer, thesystem will
readthe settings storedin the CMOS RAM andcomparethem to theequipmentcheck
conducted during the Power On Self Test(POST). If an error occurs, an error message willbe
displayed on the screen, and you will then be prompted torun the Setup Program.
As the POST (Power-On Self Test) executes duringtheboot up process, the screen will
displaythe followingmessage:
Press<F2> to Enter SETUP
Pressthe<F2> keytorun the BIOS Setup program. The BIOS Setup program is organized
into five menus which you canselect usingthe ßand àkeys. To movefromone option to
another, youuse the up anddown arrow keys while usingthe<F5> and<F6>, or <+>and <->
keys to changethesettings.Ontherighthandsideof thescreen are some brief help
descriptionsof each itemyou want to change.
On theBIOS Setup program, you will find the followingparts on thescreen:
•Item Specific Help
The rightsideof thescreen. Thisarea describeseachparameter and its
availablesettings.
•Menu Bar
The top lineof thescreen. Each of thefiveselections displays its own screen.
•Parameters
The leftside ofthescreen. This area lists the parameters and their current
settings.
•KeyStatus Bar
The bottompartofthe screen. Theselines displaythekeys availableto move
thecursor, select aparticular function andso forth.
To exit theBIOS Setup program,simply press the <Esc> keyand selectfrom the Exit menu
whether youwantto Savechanges andexit; Discard Changes and exit.
