Connecting the computer
Connectingthe computeris as easyas 1-2-3.
1. Insert the battery atan angle (1); press gently onthe battery (2) until it clicksinto place. Then slide thebattery lock to
thelock position(3).
Note: When using a battery pack for the first time, fully recharge the battery, then disconnect the
adapter to use up the battery before recharging again. Perform this action twice to condition the
battery pack.
2.Connect one endof theAC adapterto the DC-inport
onthecomputer’srearpanel(1);connectthe powercord
to the AC adapter (2) and the other end to a properly
groundedpower outlet(3).
3.Press thedisplay coverreleaselatch (1)and openthe
display (2) to a comfortable viewing angle. Press the
powerswitch(3)toturn onthepower.ThePOST(power-
onself-test)routineexecutes andWindowsbeginsload-
ing.
Note: To turn off the power, use the Windows Turn
Off command to shut down the computer. If you are
unable to shut down your computer normally, press
and hold the power switch for more than four
seconds to turn off the computer. If you turn off the
computer and want to turn it on again, wait at least
two seconds before powering up.

Care and maintenance
Taking care of your computer
Your computer will serve you well if you take care of it.
• Do not expose the computerto direct sunlight.Do not place itnear sources of heat,such as a radiator.
•Do not exposethe computer totemperatures below 0.C(32.F) or above50.C (122.F).
•Do not subjectthe computerto magnetic fields.
•Do not expose thecomputer to rainor moisture.
•Donot spill wateror anyliquid on thecomputer.
•Do not subjectthe computerto heavyshock and vibration.
•Do not exposethe computer todust anddirt.
•Never placeobjectson topof thecomputer toavoiddamaging thecomputer.
•Never placethe computer onuneven surfaces.
Taking care of your AC adapter
Here are some ways to take care of your AC adapter:
•Do not connectthe adapter to any otherdevice.
•Do notstepon thepower cordor place heavyobjects ontop ofit.Carefully routethe powercordand anycables away
from all potential traffic.
•When unpluggingthe powercord, donot pullon thecord itselfbutpull onthe plug.
•The total ampere ratingsof the equipmentplugged in shouldnot exceed theampere rating ofthe cord ifyou are
usingan extension cord.Also, the totalcurrent ratingof all equipmentplugged into asingle wall outletshould not
exceedthe fuserating.
Taking care of your battery pack
Here are some ways to take care of your battery pack:
• Use only batteries of the same kind as replacements.Turn the power off before removing or replacing batteries.
•Do not tamperwith batteries. Keepthem awayfrom children.
•Dispose ofused batteries accordingto localregulations. Recycleif at allpossible.
Cleaning and servicing
Whencleaning thecomputer,follow thesesteps:
1.Power off thecomputer and removethe batterypack.
2.Disconnect theACadapter.
3.Usea soft clothmoistened with water.Do not use liquidor aerosol cleaners.
Contactyour dealer orsee your servicetechnician ifany of thefollowing occurs:
•The computerhas beendropped orthe bodyhas beendamaged.
•Liquid hasbeen spilledinto theproduct.
•Thecomputerdoes notoperatenormally.

Opening and closing the display
To open the display,press the display cover latch and lift up the cover,then tilt it to a comfortable viewing position.See
“Connectingthecomputer” onpage vii.Thecomputer employsamicroswitch thatturnsoff thedisplay(e.g., entersstandby
mode)to conserve powerwhen youclose thedisplay cover,andturns itback onwhen youopen the displaycover.
To closethe displaycover,fold it downgently untilthe displaycoverlatchclicks intoplace.
Caution:To avoid damaging the display, do not slam it when you close it.Also,do not place any
object on top of the computer when the display is closed.
Indicators
Thecomputer has seveneasy-to-read statusindicators (LEDs)under the displayscreen.

Special keys
Lock keys
Thekeyboard has threelock keyswhich youcan toggle onand off.
Lock Key Description
Caps Lock When Caps Lock is on, all alphabetic characters typed are in uppercase.
Num Lock When Num Lock is on, the embedded keypad is in numeric mode. The (Fn-F11)
keys function as a calculator (complete with the arithmetic operators +, -, *, and /).
Use this mode when you need to do a lot of numeric data entry. A better
solution would be to connect an external keypad. See “External keyboard”.
Scroll Lock When Scroll Lock is on, the screen moves one line up or down when (Fn-F12) you
press /\ or \/ respectively. Scroll Lock does not work with some applications.

Windows logo key Start button. Combinations with this key perform special functions.

Fn-F2 Sleep Puts the computer in Sleep mode, which can be defined via
the advanced section of the Power Management Properties in the
Windows Control Panel.
Fn-F3 Display toggle Switches display output between the display screen, external monitor
(if connected) and both the display screen and external monitor
Fn-F4 Screen blank Turns the display screen backlight off to save power. Press any key
to return
Fn-F5 Speaker on/off Turns the speakers on and off; mutes the sound
Fn-F6 Touchpad toggle Enables or disables the touchpad.
Fn-PgUp Home Functions as the “Home” key
Fn-PgDn End Functions as the “End” key
Fn-–› Brightness up Increases the screen brightness

Note: Keep your fingers dry and clean when using the touchpad. Also keep the touchpad dry and
clean. The touchpad is sensitive to finger movements. Hence, the lighter the touch, the better the

INSERTING THE DISC
To insert a disc into the optical drive,press the eject button to eject the drive tray.
Pullout the drivetray andplace a discsecurely onthe spindle;then close thedrivetray.
REMOVING ADISC
Beforeejecting a disc,make surethat no programsor applicationsare using thedisc. Thenpress the ejectbutton toeject
the drive tray.Pull out the drive tray and remove the disc from the spindle.Close the drive tray.

PLAYING DVD MOVIES
To playDVDmoviesin yourcomputer,justinserta DVDmoviedisc intothedrive andthe DVDmoviewill automaticallyplay
after a few seconds.
Important! When you launch the DVD player for the first time, the program asks you to input the
region code. DVD discs are divided into 6 regions. Once your DVD drive is set to a region code, it will
play DVD discs of that region only.You can set the region code a maximum of five times (including
the first time), after which the last region code set will remain permanent.
Recovering your hard disk does not reset the number of times the region code has been set. Refer
to the table below for DVD movie region code information.

BURNING CDSAND DVDS
Depending onthe optical driveinstalledin your computer,youcan burnDVDs orCDs on your computer.The CD-RW drive
acceptsa CD-R(CD-Recordable) or CD-RW(CD-ReWritable) forwriting data.The DVDDual drive acceptsa DVD+/-RWfor
writingdata.The SuperMulti drive accepts a DVD+/-RWor DVD-RAMdisc forwriting data.Please referto the onlinehelp
of the CD/DVD recording software on your hard disk for more information.
Note: The DVD-ROM drive is not capable of burning CDs or DVDs.

Connectivity options
Thecomputer hasbuilt-in features forconnecting toa networkand communicatingwith othercomputers.
Ethernet (LAN)
The built-in network feature allows you to connect your computer to an Ethernet-based (10/100/1000 Mbps)
network.
To use the network feature, connect an Ethernet cable from the network jack on the rear of the computer to a
network jack or hub on your network.

Fax/data modem
Thecomputer has abuilt-in fax/data modem (available inselect countries).
Warning: This modem port is not compatible with digital phone lines. Plugging this modem into a
digital phone line will damage the modem.
To usethe fax/datamodem port,connect a phonecable fromthe modem port toa telephonejack.

Wireless communication
Thiscomputer canbe equipped witha wirelesscommunication feature(option). Thisfeature allows youto connectto an
Ethernet-basednetwork wirelesslyand communicatewith otherwireless communicationdevices.
Youcan manually turnoff yourwirelesscommunication feature.
Audio
Your computerincludes 16-bithigh-fidelitystereoaudio.Thespeakerlocatednear thekeyboard,direct soundtowardsyou
tofurther enhancesoundoutput.
There are audio ports on the rear panel of the computer. See“Rear view”for the location of these ports.Also see“Audio
devices”for moreinformation onconnecting externalaudio devices.

A rotary knob located near the left rear side of the computer allows you to adjust the volume.Turn it towards the rear of
the computer to decrease the volume;turn it towards the front to increasethe volume.

intothe notch andturn the keyto securethe lock. Somekeyless models arealso available.
Passwords
Passwordsprotectyour computerfromunauthorizedaccess. Whenset,noone canaccessthe computerwithoutenteringthe
correctpassword.
Thereare three typesof passwords youcan set:
•Supervisor Passwordsecuresyour computeragainst unauthorizedentrytocritical parametersin the BIOSUtility.
•User Password securesyour computeragainst unauthorizeduse,and allows limitedaccess totheBIOS Utility.

Operating on battery power
Optimizing battery life
Thissection helpsyouget themostout ofbattery operation.Optimizingbattery lifeprolongs thecharge/rechargecycle and
improvesrechargeefficiency.Followthese suggestionsto optimize and maximizebattery power:
•Purchase an extrabattery pack.
•Use the ACadapter whenever possibleso thatthe battery isreserved for on-the-gocomputing.
•Keep thebattery packinthe computerpoweredby theACadapter.Theconstanttrickle chargemaintainsthe battery
levelto eliminate thebattery self-dischargeeffect. The charge-in-use function alsocharges thebattery pack.
•Ejectthe PC cardfrom thecardslot when itis not inuse,since the PCcarddrawsextrapower.See“Ejecting a card”
onpage50.
•Store the batterypack in acool, dry place.The recommended storagetemperature for batterypacks ranges from
10to 30 degreesCelsius. Thehigher thestorage temperature, thefaster thebattery pack self-discharges.
•The batteriescan berecharged about400 timeswhen usedas directed.Excessive rechargingdecreases batterylife.
•Take care of your battery pack and AC adapter.See“Care and maintenance”chapter of the preface.
