Instructions for Care and Operation
Thenotebook computeris quite rugged,but it can be damaged.To preventthis,follow these suggestions:
1.Don’tdropit,orexposeittoshock.Ifthecomputerfalls,thecaseandthecomponentscouldbe damaged
Donot expose the computer to any shock orvibration.
Donotplace it on an unstable surface.
Donotplaceanythingheavy on the computer.
2.Keepit dry,and don’toverheatit.Keepthecomputerand powersupply away fromanykind of heatingelement.This is
anelectricalappliance.Ifwater or any other liquid gets into it, the computer could be badly damaged.
Donot expose it to excessive heator direct sunlight.
Do not leave it in a place where foreign matter or moisture may affect the system.
Don’tuse or store the computer in a humid environment.
Donotplace the computer on any surface which will block the vents.
3.Avoidinterference. Keep thecomputeraway from highcapacitytransformers,electric motors, andotherstrongmagnetic
fields.Thesecanhinderproperperformanceanddamageyourdata.
4.Followthe proper workingproceduresfor thecomputer.Shut the computerdownproperly and don’tforgettosave your

Power Safety
Thecomputerhasspecificpowerrequirements:
•Only use a power adapter approved for use with this computer.
•YourACadaptermaybedesigned for internationaltravelbut it still requiresa steady,uninterruptedpowersupply.If you
areunsureof your local powerspecifications,consult yourservice representativeorlocalpowercompany.
•Thepower adapter may haveeithera2-prongor a 3-prong groundedplug.Thethird prong is an importantsafetyfeature;

donotdefeat its purpose. If you do not have access toacompatible outlet, have a qualified electrician install one.
•Whenyouwanttounplug the power cord, be sure to disconnect it by the plug head, not by its wire.

•Before cleaning the computer,makesureit is disconnectedfromany externalpowersupplies.
Do not plug in the power cord if you are wet.
Do not use the power cord if it is broken.

Power Safety Warning

Battery Precautions

Battery Disposal
The product that you have purchased contains a rechargeable battery. The battery is recyclable. At
the end of its useful life, under various state and local laws, it may be illegal to dispose of this
battery into the municipal waste stream. Check with your local solid waste officials for details in
your area for recycling options or proper disposal.
Caution
Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or equivalent
type recommended by the manufacturer.Discard used battery according to the manufacturer’s
instructions.
Cleaning
Do not apply cleaner directlytothe computer,use a soft clean cloth.
Do not use volatile (petroleum distillates) or abrasive cleaners on any part of the computer.
Servicing
Donot attempt to service the computer yourself. Doingso may violate your warranty and expose youand the computer
toelectricshock.Refer all servicing to authorizedservicepersonnel.Unplugthecomputerfromthepowersupply.Thenrefer
servicingtoqualifiedservicepersonnelunderanyofthefollowingconditions:
•When the power cord or AC/DC adapter is damaged or frayed.
•If the computer has been exposed to rain or other liquids.
•Ifthe computer does not work normally when you follow the operating instructions.
•Ifthe computer has been dropped or damaged (do not touch the poisonous liquid iftheLCD panel breaks).

Travel Considerations
Packing
As you get ready for your trip, run through this list to make sure the system is ready to go:
1.Check that the battery pack and any sparesare fully charged.
2.Poweroffthecomputerandperipherals.
3.Close the display panel and make sureit’slatched.
4.DisconnecttheACadapterandcables.Stowtheminthecarryingbag.
5.TheAC adapteruses voltages from100 to240voltsso youwon’tneedasecondvoltageadapter.However,checkwith your
travel agent to see if you need any socket adapters.
6.Putthenotebookinitscarrying bag and secureitwiththebag’s straps.
7.If you’retakinganyperipherals(e.g.aprinter,mouseor digital camera),pack them and those devices’adaptersand/or
cables.
8.Anticipatecustoms - Some jurisdictions may have import restrictions or require proof of ownershipforboth hardware
and software.Make sure your“papers”are handy (it may be useful to have the computer in a sleep mode before going
throughcustoms).
Power Off Before Traveling
Makesurethatyour notebook is completely powered offbeforeputtingitintoa travel bag (or any suchcontainer).Putting
anotebookwhichispoweredoninatravelbag maycausethevents/intakestobeblocked.Toprevent your computer from
overheatingmakesurenothing blocks the vent/fan intake while the computer is in use.
Developing Good Work Habits
Developinggoodworkhabitsisimportantifyouneedtoworkinfrontofthecomputerforlongperiodsof time. Improper
workhabits can resultindiscomfortor serious injuryfromrepetitive strain toyourhands, wrists orotherjoints.The following
are some tips to reduce the strain:
•Adjustthe height of the chair and/or desk so that thekeyboardis at or slightly below the level of your elbow. Keepyour
forearms,wrists,andhandsinarelaxedposition.
•Your knees should be slightly higher than your hips.Place your feet flat on the floor or on a footrest if necessary.
•Usea chair with a back and adjust it to support yourlowerback comfortably.
•Sitstraight so that your knees, hips and elbows form approximately 90-degree angleswhenyou are working.
•Take periodic breaks if you are using the computer for long periods of time.
Rememberto:
• Alter your posture frequently.
• Stretch and exercise your body several times a day.
•Take periodic breakswhenyouwork at the computerforlongperiodsof time.Frequentandshort breaksarebetter than
fewerandlongerbreaks.
Lighting
Properlightingand comfortable displayviewinganglecan reduce eye strainandmusclefatigue in yourneckandshoulders.
•Position the display to avoid glare or reflectionsfrom overhead lighting or outside sources oflight.

• Keep the display screen clean and set the brightness and contrast tolevelsthat allow you to see the screenclearly.
•Position the display directly in front of you at a comfortable viewing distance.
•Adjustthe display viewing angle to find the best position.
Quick Start Guide
This guide assumes that you are already familiar with computers and can tell at a glance what and where all the key
componentsare.If you are not that comfortable with this type of device, thenpleaserefer to the following pages, which
give an overview of the system.
Itisstill best to review these steps, before taking any action. If there isanythingyou are not sure about, then please refer
totheappropriatechapterbeforecontinuing.
Unlessyou need toinstallanoperating system,yourcomputershould bereadytowork rightoutofthe box. Beforeyoubegin
pleasefollow the safety instructions in the Preface.
1.Removeallpackingmaterials,CDs/DVDs, floppy disks, and any PC Cards.
2.Securelyattach any peripherals you want to use with the notebook (e.g. keyboard and mouse)totheirports.
3.AttachtheACadaptertothe DC-In jack attherearof the computer (see“Right SideView”),thenplugtheACpower cord
into an outlet,and connect the AC power cord to the AC adapter.
4.Raisethelid/LCD to a comfortable viewing angle.
5.Pressthepowerbuttontoturn“on”.
Peripheral Devices
Please note that peripherals (printers, digital cameras, etc.) which attach to your computer by
USB ports may be connected after Windows is up and running. All other peripherals must be
connected before you turn on the system.

Gloss Style Top Covers
Notethefollowing guidelines for care andattentionofthe gloss style top coverincorporatedwithinthedesign styles of this
notebookmodel.
• Remove the protective cover slowly and carefully.Do not forcibly tear off the protective cover as this may damage the
surfaceof the top cover.
•Do not use pointedobjects on the surface ofthe topcover,and do not place objects on topof it.
•Do not expose the top cover to excessive heat or direct sunlight.
•Only use the soft cloth provided for cleaning the top cover,and do not use abrasive cleaners.

2.Move the LCD latches (1) in the direction of the arrows to release the top cover.
3. Lift the top cover to reveal the LCD panel and keyboard.

Forced Off
If the system“hangs”, and the Ctrl + Alt + Del key combination doesn’t work, press the power
button for 4 seconds,or longer, to force the system to turn itself off.
CloseCoverSwitch
Thisswitchactsas a sensor to tell when theLCDPanelisclosed.Whenthis LCD cover sensor is activated, thedefaultsetting
of your operating system’s power scheme sends the computer into a power saving state.
Shutdown
Please note that you should always shut your computer down by choosing the Shut Down/Turn Off
Computer command from the Start menu in Windows. This will help prevent hard disk or system
problems.
Keyboard
Thecomputerhasa“WinKey”keyboardincludinganumerickeypad.Ithasthesame featuresasafull-sizeddesktopkeyboard
andcaneasilybereplacedwith a different language keyboard should you desire.
TouchPad & Buttons
Thepointingdevice features asensitiveglide pad forprecisemovements.It functions thesamewayas a two-buttonmouse.
TherightTouchPadbutton is the same as therightmousebutton;the leftTouchPad buttonis the same as the left mouse
button.The central button may be used to scroll up anddown, or may be configured to perform a variety offunctions.

CD Emergency Eject
If you need to manually eject a CD/DVD (e.g. due to an unexpected power interruption) you may
push the end of a straightened paper clip into the emergency eject hole. Do not use a sharpened
pencil or similar object that may break and become lodged in the hole.
External Monitor (VGA) Port
Connectan external VGA monitor (CRT) tothis port to allow dual videoor simultaneous display on the LCD and external
VGAmonitor.

The CPU is not a user serviceable part.Opening this compartment, or accessing the CPU in any way,
may violate your warranty.
Overheating
To prevent your computer from overheating make sure nothing blocks the vent/fan outlet while
the computer is in use.
HardDiskDrive
Theinternal hard disk drive is used to store your data.
Drive Warning
Don’t try to remove the hard disk (HDD) while the system is on. This could cause data loss or
damage. Unauthorized removal or tampering with the HDD may violate your warranty. If you are
in doubt, consult your service representative.
WirelessLAN (Network) & Bluetooth Modules
Yournotebook computer will haveeither an IntelPRO/Wireless2100 (802.11b) OR 2200BG (802.11b/g) Mini PCIWireless
LANmodule,andmayhaveanoptionalBluetoothmodule.The antenna and other components are not externally visible
(checkwithyour service representative). Makesureyouinstall the appropriate driver(s)forit/them.Make sure any wireless
moduleisOFF when you are using the computer aboard aircraft by using the appropriate keycombinationbelow.
Power Toggle for the Wireless LAN and Bluetooth Modules
You will need to enable power to the modules by using the following key combinations:
Fn + F11 = Wireless LAN Module Power Toggle
Fn + F12 = Bluetooth Module Power Toggle
When the Wireless LAN module is powered on, the LED will be green.
When the Bluetooth module is powered on, the LED will be orange.
Do not try to use the Wireless LAN module and the Bluetooth module at the same time, as this
may cause a communication conflict.
Wireless Device Operation Aboard Aircraft
The use of any portable electronic transmission devices aboard aircraft is usually prohibited. Make
sure the module(s) are OFF if you are using the computer aboard aircraft. When the computer
first ‘Boots Up’ the module(s) will be OFF.
If you restart the computer the power status of the module will remain the same as it was before
the restart. If you shut down the computer the module will turn OFF.

Using The Computer
The Power Sources
Thecomputer can be powered by either an AC adapter or a battery pack.
ACAdapter
UseonlytheACadapterthat comes with your computer.Thewrongtype of ACadapter will damage the computer and its
components.
1.Attach the AC adapter to the DC-in jack on the right of the computer.
2.Plug the AC power cord into an outlet,then connect the AC power cord to the AC adapter.
3.Raisethelid/LCD to a comfortable viewing angle.
4.Pressthepowerbuttontoturn“on”.
Power Button as Standby or Hibernate Button
If you are using a fully ACPI-compliant OS, (such as Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows XP)
you can use the OS’s“Power Options”control panel to set the power button to send the system into
Standby or Hibernate mode.
Battery
Thebattery allows youtouseyour notebookcomputerwhileyou areontheroad oranelectricaloutlet isunavailable.Battery
lifevariesdepending ontheapplicationsand theconfigurationyou'reusing.Toincreasebatterylife,letthebatterydischarge
completelybeforerecharging.
We recommend that you do not remove the battery.
Rechargingthe Battery with the AC Adapter
The battery pack automatically recharges when the AC adapter is attached and plugged into an electrical outlet. If the
computeris poweredon,and in use,itwilltakeseveralhours to fully rechargethe battery.Whenthecomputeristurnedoff
butpluggedintoan electrical outlet, battery charge time is less.
Proper handling of the Battery Pack
•DO NOT disassemble the battery pack under any circumstances
• DO NOT expose the battery to fire or high temperatures, it may explode
• DO NOT connect the metal terminals (+, -) to each other
Battery Removal
We recommend that you do not remove the battery yourself. Please consult your service
representative should you need to remove the battery for any reason.
Low Battery Warning
When the battery is critically low, immediately connect the AC adapter to the computer or save
your work, otherwise, the unsaved data will be lost when the power is depleted.
Turning on the Computer
Nowyouare readytobegin using yourcomputer.To turn it on simply pressthe powerbutton on the front panel.
Whenthe computerison, youcanuse thepowerbutton asaStandby/Hibernate/Shutdown hot-keybuttonwhen itispressed
forless than 4seconds(pressingand holdingthepowerbutton forlongerthanthis will shutthecomputer down). UsePower
OptionsintheWindowscontrolpaneltoconfigurethisfeature.
Shutdown
Note that you should always shut your computer down by choosing the Shut Down/Turn Off Computer
command from the Start menu in Windows. This will help prevent hard disk or system problems.

Blinking Orange The battery has reached critically low power status
Communication Conflict
Do not try to use the Wireless LAN module and the Bluetooth module at the same time, as this
may cause a communication conflict.
Scroll Lock
To enable and disable the Scroll Lock feature, press the Fn and ScrLk keys simultaneously.
Hard Disk Drive
Theharddisk driveis used tostoreyour data in the notebook computer.Thehard disk can be taken out to accommodate
other2.5" IDE hard disk drives with a height of 9.5 mm.
Thehard disk (1) is accessible from the bottom of your computeras seen below.

Power Safety
Before attempting to access any of the internal components of your notebook please ensure that
the machine is not connected to the AC power, and that the machine is turned off.Also ensure that
all peripheral cables, including phone lines, are disconnected from the computer.
Optical Device
Theoptical device baywillcontain a 5.25"CD-ROM/DVDtype optical device.Theactual device typewilldepend on theoption
you purchased.The CD Device is usually labeled“Drive D:”,and may be used as a boot device if properly set in the BIOS.
LoadingDiscs
To insertaCD/DVD,press the open button(1) and carefullyplaceaCD/DVDontothedisctraywith label-side facing up (use
justenough forcefor the disc to click onto the tray’s spindle).
GentlypushtheCD/DVDtray in untilitslock“clicks”and youare readyto start.Thebusyindicator (2) willlightup while data
isbeingaccessed,orwhile an audio/video CD, or DVD, is playing.
Ifpowerisunexpectedly interrupted, insert an object such asastraightenedpaperclipinto the emergency eject hole (3)to
openthetray.
Sound Volume Adjustment
How high the sound volume can be set depends on the setting of the volume control within
Windows. Click the Volume icon on the taskbar to check the setting.
All peripherals must be connected before you turn on the system.
HandlingCDs or DVDs
Properhandlingof your CDs/DVDs will prevent them from being damaged.
Pleasefollow the advice below to make sure thatthe data stored on your CDROMs/DVD-ROMs can beaccessed.
Rememberto:
• Hold the CD or DVD by the edges; do not touch the surface of the disc.
•Use a clean, soft, dry clothto remove dust or fingerprints.
• Do not write on the surface with a pen.
• Do not attach paper or other materials to the surface of the disc.
• Do not store or place the CD or DVD in high-temperature areas.
• Do not use benzene,thinner,or other cleaners to clean the CD or DVD.
• Do not bend the CD or DVD.

Conserving Battery Power
To conserve battery power remove any unused PC Cards from the computer (PC Cards quickly use

Other Keyboards
If your keyboard is damaged or you just want to make a change, you can use any standard USB
keyboard. The system will detect and enable it automatically. However special functions/hot keys
unique to the system’s regular keyboard may not work.
NumericKeypad
The keyboard has an embedded numerical keypad for easy numeric data input. Activate the Number Lock feature by
pressingtheFnandNumLkkeycombination.You maycheckif Number Lock is enabled or not by looking attheLEDstatus
indicators.Totype a number fromthe numeric keypadmake sureNumLk is enabled,andthenpressthe keyonthenumeric
keypad.(To type a letter from the numeric keypad if Num Lk is enabled,hold down the Fn key and press the appropriate
letter key.)
ActivateScroll Lock by pressing the Fn and Scr Lk key combination.
Special Characters
Some software applications allow the number-keys to be used with Alt to produce special
characters. These special characters can only be produced by using the numeric keypad. Regular
number keys (in the upper row of the keyboard) will not work. Make sure that Num Lock is on.
TouchPad and Buttons/Mouse
TheTouchPad is a device for pointing (controlling input positioning) on the computer’s display screen by sensing finger
movement,anddownwardpressure.It is an alternativetothemouse;however,youcanalso add a mouse toyourcomputer
throughone of the USB ports.
TheTouchPadbuttonsfunctioninmuchthe same wayasa two-buttonmouse.OnceyouhaveinstalledtheTouchPaddrivers

Mouse Driver
If you are using an external mouse your operating system may be able to auto-configure your
mouse during its installation or only enable its basic functions.Be sure to check the device’s user
documentation for details.
Configuring the Infrared Transceiver
To configurethe computer’s settings for FastInfrared (FIR) communicationfollowthese steps:
1.ClickStart, point to Settings (or just click Start and clickControl Panel) and click Control Panel.
2.Double-clickWirelessLink (in the Printers and Other Hardware Category) icon.
3.ClickHardware(tab),andthenclickProperties(button).
4.SelectAdvanced(tab).
5.Select“InfraredTransceiverA”and change theValueto“HP HDSL-2300/3600”.
6.ClickOK > OK.
Theinfraredtransceiver may be enabled/disabled in the BIOS.

Infrared Communication
The infrared transceiver operates on a “Line of Sight”.
Make sure nothing is blocking the“Line of Sight” between your system’s transceiver and the
destination’s transceiver.
Adding a Printer
Themostcommonlyusedperipheralis aprinter.Thefollowingconventionswill help youtoaddaprinter,howeveritisalways
besttorefer to the printer manual for specific instructions and configurationoptions.
USBPrinter
Most new printers have a USB interface connection.You may use any of the USB ports on your computer to connect the
printer.
InstallInstructions:
1.Set up theprinteraccordingto its instructions (unpacking,papertray,toner/ink cartridge etc.).
2.Turn ON the computer.
3.Turn ON the printer.
4.Connect the printer’s USB cable to one of the USB portson the computer.
5.Windows will identify the printer and either load oneofits own drivers or ask you to supply one.Follow the on-screen
instructions.
ParallelPrinter
This is still a very common type of printer.A Parallel to USB converter may be purchased at most computer stores.
InstallInstructions:
1.Set up the printeraccordingto its instructions (unpacking,paper tray,toner/ ink cartridge etc.).
2.Attach the parallel cable to the printer.
3.Connect the printer’s parallel cable to the Parallel toUSB converter,and then plug the converter into the USB port.
4.Turn ON the printer.
5.Turn ON the computer.
6.Windows(some operating systems may requireadrivertorecognize the parallel toUSBadapter)willidentify the printer
andeitherload one of its own drivers or ask you to supply one. Follow theon-screeninstructions.

Advanced Video Controls

Openingthe LCD
Asyouopen the lid,adjust it so youcanlookatthescreenstraight on,without any glare.If necessary,adjust the brightness
controls (Fn + F8/F9). The Fn + F7 key combination allows you to toggle through display options if you have a monitor
attached.
Protecting the LCD
Do not allow any foreign objects (i.e. paper or plastic) to get between the lid/LCD and the work
panel. They could damage or scratch the LCD and/or accidentally activate the close cover switch.
DynamicVideoMemoryTechnology
Intel®DVMTautomatically and dynamically allocates asmuch(upto 64MB) system memory (RAM)asneededto the video
system.DVMT returns whatever memory is no longerneeded to the operating system.

Video Driver Controls
Thevideo interface lets you change the screen resolution and coloroutput to whatever is most comfortable/efficient for
you.Thisisamatterof hardware, video memory and the driver for your operating system. The driver interface shows the
availableoptions.
Youcan switch display devicesfromthe Display Properties controlpanel inWindowsaslongasthevideodriver is installed.
Screen Resolution/Screen Area Note
You may set the resolution to a higher setting than the panel supports, however this will require
you to pan (scroll) around the screen as the display area will be larger than what you can see on
the LCD.
MakingAdjustmentsforthe Display
The higher the resolution you set the LCD for,the more information the LCD can display on screen.To change the LCD’s
resolutionandcolordepthgototheDisplayPropertiescontrolpanel:
1. Click Start, point to Settings (or just click Control Panel) and click Control Panel (if you are in Category View choose
AppearanceandThemes).
2.Double-clickDisplay (icon).
3.IntheDisplayPropertiesdialogbox,clickSettings(tab).

Schemes
UseSchemestoconfigure quick settings for applications that require specific resolution and color settings in order to run
properlye.g.games,multimediaprograms.Toset the schemes:
1.GototheIntel(R)82852/82855GM/GMEGraphicsController Properties control panel.
2.ClickonSchemes(tab).
3.SelectNewtosetupthe scheme, and type a name in the dialog box that pops up, then click OK.
4.Click on theschemename you hadtypedin the Schemesbox,and choose theoptionyou wish tousefrom the VideoModes
box.
5. Browse to the executable file for the application you want to set a scheme for (see sidebar).
6.You can click in the "Reset On Exit" boxto return toyour original settings when youexit the program,thenclickSave to
savethesettings.
7.Whenyouwant to run the program, select itfromtheSchemesboxandclick "Invoke" to run the highlighted programin
thechosenvideosetting(alternativelyyoucan select it from Display Modes by clicking on the icon option in the taskbar at
thebottom right of the screen).
Application.exe
You will need to locate the actual application executable (.exe) file,not just the shortcut.To find
the application right-click its shortcut on the desktop click Properties. Click the Shortcut (tab) and
see where the executable file is located by clicking the Find Target (button). Note the location and
you will then be able to browse to this file.
Display Devices
Besidesthe built-in LCD,youcan alsouseanexternal monitor(CRT)asyour displaydevice.A monitor connectstothe external
monitor (VGA) port (1).
Switching/EnablingDisplays(Keyboard)
Youcanswitch display devices with the Fn + Display (F7) toggle.With the video driverinstalled,youalsocanuseitsbuilt-
incontrolsto switch the display options.To switch the displayoptions:
1.Plugthemonitorintotheappropriateport.
2.PressandholdtheFnkey,while simultaneously pressingtheF7key.
3.Youmaytogglethroughtheoptions todisplaythe LCDonly,theexternaldisplayaloneandthe LCDandtheexternaldisplay
together (make sure you allow time for the screens to refresh as you toggle through).
Using the Driver to Switch Displays
If you only use the keyboard toggle to switch through the display options you will not have all the
configuration options available to you. If you want to access all the options, use the driver control
panel to configure the settings.
Switching/EnablingDisplays(Driver)
Withthevideodriverinstalled,you can use the built-in controls to switch between the displays as follows:
1.Plugthemonitorintotheappropriateport.
2.Gotothe Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller Properties control panel and select Devices (tab).
3.Choose the display option from the list on theleft and click Apply (and OK to confirm thesettings change).
4.The notebook will be the Primary display,and the monitor the Secondary.See the following pages for instructions on
enablingCloneand Extended Desktop modes.
