1. It is the responsibility of the owner to ens re
that all sers of this treadmill are adeq ately
informed of all warnings and preca tions.
2. Use the treadmill only as described.
3. Place the treadmill on a level s rface, with at
least eight feet of clearance behind it and two
feet on each side. Do not place the treadmill
on any s rface that blocks air openings. To
protect the floor or carpet from damage, place
a mat nder the treadmill.
4. Keep the treadmill indoors, away from mois-
t re and d st. Do not p t the treadmill in a
garage or covered patio, or near water.
5. Do not operate the treadmill where aerosol
prod cts are sed or where oxygen is being
administered.
6. Keep children nder the age of 12 and pets
away from the treadmill at all times.
7. The treadmill sho ld be sed only by persons
weighing 250 po nds or less.
8. Never allow more than one person on the
treadmill at a time.
9. Wear appropriate exercise clothes when
sing the treadmill. Do not wear loose clothes
that co ld become ca ght in the treadmill.
Athletic s pport clothes are recommended for
both men and women. Always wear athletic
shoes. Never use the treadmill with bare feet,
wearing only stockings, or in sandals.
10. When connecting the power cord (see page 7),
pl g the power cord into a s rge s ppressor
(not incl ded) and pl g the s rge s ppressor
into a gro nded circ it capable of carrying 15
or more amps. No other appliance sho ld be on
the same circ it. Do not se an extension cord.
11. Use only a single-o tlet s rge s ppressor that
meets all of the specifications described on
page 7. To p rchase a s rge s ppressor, see
yo r local SEARS or call 1-800-366-7278 and
order part n mber 146148.
12. Fail re to se a properly f nctioning s rge
s ppressor co ld res lt in damage to the con-
trol system of the treadmill. If the control sys-
tem is damaged, the walking belt may change
speed or stop nexpectedly, which may res lt
in a fall and serio s inj ry.
13. Keep the power cord and the s rge s ppres-
sor away from heated s rfaces.

14. Never move the walking belt while the power
is t rned off. Do not operate the treadmill if
the power cord or pl g is damaged, or if the
treadmill is not working properly. (See BE-
FORE YOU BEGIN on page 4 if the treadmill
is not working properly.)
15. Never start the treadmill while yo are stand-
ing on the walking belt. Always hold the
handrails while sing the treadmill.
16. The treadmill is capable of high speeds.

17. Never leave the treadmill nattended while it
is r nning. Always remove the key and n-
pl g the power cord when the treadmill is not
in se.
18. Do not attempt to raise, lower, or move the

Pi treadmill. The 48 Pi treadmill combines advanced
technology with innovative design to help you get the
most from your exercise in the convenience and pri-
vacy of your home. And when you’re not exercising, the
unique 48 Pi can be folded up, requiring less than half
the floor space of other treadmills.

1. Carefully raise the Uprights (11) until the treadmill is in
the position shown.
Insert one of the Extension Legs (34) into the treadmill
as shown. (Note: It may be helpful to tip the Uprights [11]
in the direction shown by the arrow as you insert the
Extension Leg.) Make sure that the Base Pad (40) is on
the indicated side of the Extension Leg. Attach the
Extension Leg with an Extension Leg Screw ( 3). Be
s re to p sh on the head of the Extension Leg Screw
while tightening it. Attach the other Extension Leg (not
shown) in the same way.

ASSEMBLY
Assembly req ires two people. Set the treadmill in a cleared area and remove all packing materials. Do not
dispose of the packing materials until assembly is completed. Assembly req ires the incl ded allen wrench
and yo r own phillips screwdriver and wire c tters .
Note: The underside of the treadmill walking belt is coated with high-performance lubricant. During shipping, a
small amount of lubricant may be transferred to the top of the walking belt or the shipping carton. This is a normal
condition and does not affect treadmill performance. If there is lubricant on top of the walking belt, simply wipe off
the lubricant with a soft cloth and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner.

2. Slide a Handrail Cap (41) onto one of the Handrails (1)
as shown. Insert the Handrail (1) into the tube at the top
of the left Upright (11). Finger tighten a Handrail Bolt (78)
at an angle (see the inset drawing) into the Upright and
the Handrail. Make sure that the Handrail Cap (41) is
around the Upright.
Press the top of the Handrail (1) into the left Upright (11).
Align the hole in the Handrail with the hole in the Upright,
and tighten a Handrail Screw ( 3) into the Upright and
the Handrail. Then, tighten the Handrail Bolt (78).
Attach the other Handrail (1) as described above.

. Make s re that all parts are properly tightened before yo se the treadmill. Keep the included allen
wrench in a secure place. The allen wrench is used to adjust the walking belt (see page 13). To protect the
floor or carpet, place a mat under the treadmill.
3. Place the Console Base (46) on the tubes on the Uprights
(11). Pull out the two Wires (21) just enough to connect
them to the two connectors in the Console Base. Make a
loop with the indicated plastic tie and insert the end
through the tie holder on the bottom of the Console Base.
Plug the Wire that has a red connector into the corre-
sponding connector in the Console Base. The connectors
should fit together without being forced; if they do not, ro-
tate the red connector on the Wire and try again. Do not
force the connectors together. Next, plug the other
Wire into the other connector on the Console Base.
Important: Make s re that both Wires are f lly in-
serted. WARNING: Do not disconnect or connect the
Wires while the treadmill power cord is pl gged in. Pull
the plastic tie tight and cut off the end.
Refer to drawing 3b. Thread six Console Screws (88) into
the Uprights (11) and the Console Base (46). After all six
Console Screws have been started, tighten the Screws
ntil they are sn g. Do not overtighten the Screws. 88

OPERATION AND ADJUSTMENT
THE PERFORMANT LUBETM WALKING BELT
Your treadmill features a walking belt coated with
PERFORMANT LUBETM, a high-performance lubricant.
IMPORTANT: Never apply silicone spray or other
s bstances to the walking belt or the walking plat-
form. S ch s bstances will deteriorate the walking
belt and ca se excessive wear.
HOW TO PLUG IN THE POWER CORD
Your treadmill, like any other type of sophisticated
electronic equipment, can be seriously damaged by
sudden voltage changes in your home’s power.
Voltage surges, spikes, and noise interference can
result from weather conditions or from other appliances
being turned on or off. To decrease the possibility of
yo r treadmill being damaged, always se a s rge
s ppressor with yo r treadmill (see drawing 1 at
the right). To p rchase a s rge s ppressor, see
yo r local SEARS or call toll-free 1-800-366-7278
and order part n mber 146148.
Use only a single-o tlet s rge s ppressor that is
UL 1449 listed as a transient voltage s rge s p-
pressor (TVSS). The s rge s ppressor m st have a
UL s ppressed voltage rating of 400 volts or less
and a minim m s rge dissipation of 450 jo les.
The s rge s ppressor m st be electrically rated
for 120 volts AC and 15 amps. There m st be a
monitoring light on the s rge s ppressor to indi-
cate whether it is f nctioning properly. Fail re to
se a properly f nctioning s rge s ppressor co ld
res lt in damage to the control system of the
treadmill. If the control system is damaged, the
walking belt may change speed or stop nexpect-
edly, which may res lt in a fall and serio s inj ry.
This prod ct m st be gro nded. If it should malfunc-
tion or break down, grounding provides a path of least
resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of elec-
tric shock. This product is equipped with a cord having
an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding
plug. Pl g the power cord into a s rge s ppressor,
and pl g the s rge s ppressor into an appropriate
o tlet that is properly installed and gro nded in
accordance with all local codes and ordinances.
Important: The treadmill is not compatible with
GFCI-eq ipped o tlets.
This product is for use on a nominal 120-volt circuit,
and has a grounding plug that looks like the plug illus-
trated in drawing 1 below. A temporary adapter that
looks like the adapter illustrated in drawing 2 may be
used to connect the surge suppressor to a 2-pole
receptacle as shown in drawing 2 if a properly
grounded outlet is not available.
The temporary adapter should be used only until a
properly grounded outlet (drawing 1) can be installed
by a qualified electrician.
The green-colored rigid ear, lug, or the like extending
from the adapter must be connected to a permanent
ground such as a properly grounded outlet box cover.
Whenever the adapter is used it must be held in place
by a metal screw. Some 2-pole receptacle o tlet box
covers are not gro nded. Contact a q alified elec-
trician to determine if the o tlet box cover is
gro nded before sing an adapter.
DANGER:Improper connection
of the eq ipment-gro nding cond ctor can
res lt in an increased risk of electric shock.
Check with a q alified electrician or service-
man if yo are in do bt as to whether the
prod ct is properly gro nded. Do not modify
the pl g provided with the prod ct—if it will
not fit the o tlet, have a proper o tlet
installed by a q alified electrician.

BATTERY INSTALLATION
The console req ires three "AA" batteries (not in-
cluded). Alkaline batteries are recommended. Open
the battery cover as shown in the drawing at the upper
right. Insert the batteries into the battery compartment,
making sure that the negative (–) ends of the batteries
are touching the springs in the battery compartment.
Close the battery cover, push up on the battery cover
tab, and then push the tab forward as shown in the
inset drawing. Make sure that the tab locks into place.
STEP-BY-STEP CONSOLE OPERATION
Before operating the console, make sure that the
power cord is properly plugged in (see page 7).
Stand on the foot rails of the treadmill. Find the clip at-
tached to the key (see the drawing at the top of this
page), and slide the clip onto the waistband of your
clothes. Next, insert the key into the console. Test the
clip by caref lly taking a few steps backward ntil
the key is p lled from the console. If the key is not
p lled from the console, adj st the position of the
clip as needed.
CAUTION:Before operating the
console, read the following preca tions.
• Do not stand on the walking belt when t rn-
ing on the power.
• Always wear the clip (see the drawing
above) while sing the treadmill. When the
key is removed from the console, the walk-
ing belt will stop.
• Adj st the speed in small increments.
• The training zones marked above the speed
control are general g idelines only. See
page 14 for more information.
• To red ce the possibility of electric shock,
keep the console dry. Avoid spilling liq ids
on the console and se only a sealable
water bottle.

Follow the steps below to operate the console.
Insert the key f lly into the power switch.
Inserting the key will
not turn on the dis-
plays. The displays will
turn on when the
ON/RESET button is
pressed or when the
walking belt is started.
Note: If you just
installed batteries, the displays will already be on.
Reset the speed control and start the walking
belt.
Slide the speed control fully to the left to the reset
position. Note: Each time the walking belt is
stopped, the speed control m st be moved to
the reset position before the walking belt can
be restarted.
Next, slowly slide the speed control to the right
until the walking belt begins to move at slow
speed. Carefully step onto the walking belt and
begin exercising. Change the speed of the walking
belt as desired by sliding the speed control.
To stop the walking belt, step onto the foot rails
and slide the speed control to the reset position.
Note: During the first few minutes that the treadmill
is used, inspect the alignment of the walking belt
and align it if necessary (see page 13).

The LED Track—The
track in the center of the
console represent a dis-
tance of 1/4 mile. As
you exercise, the indica-
tors around the track will
light one at a time until
you have completed 1/4
mile. A new lap will then
begin.
TIME/DISTANCE/LAPS
display—This display
shows the elapsed time
and the distance that
you have walked or run,
in miles. The display
also shows the number
of laps you have completed. Every few seconds,
the display will change from one number to the
next, as shown by the arrows in the display.
CALORIES/FAT CALS/
SPEED display—This
display shows the ap-
proximate numbers of
calories and fat calories
you have burned (see
FAT BURNING on page
14). In addition, the display shows the speed of
the walking belt, in miles per hour. Every few sec-
onds, the display will change from one number to
the next, as shown by the arrows in the display.
To reset the displays at
any time, press the
ON/RESET button.
Note: The console can
display speed and dis-
tance in either miles or
kilometers. To change the nit of meas re-
ment, hold down the ON/RESET b tton for five
seconds.
When yo are finished exercising, stop the
walking belt and remove the key.
Step onto the foot rails, slide the speed control to
the reset position, and remove the key from the
console. The displays will turn off a few minutes
after the key is removed. Note: Any time that the
walking belt is stopped and the ON/RESET
b tton is not pressed for a few min tes, the
displays will a tomatically t rn off to conserve
the batteries.

HOW TO FOLD AND MOVE THE TREADMILL
HOW TO FOLD THE TREADMILL FOR STORAGE
Before folding the treadmill, unplug the power cord.
CAUTION: Yo m st be able to safely lift 45 po nds (20
kg) in order to raise, lower, or move the treadmill.
1. Hold the treadmill with your hands in the locations shown
at the right. To decrease the possibility of inj ry, bend
yo r legs and keep yo r back straight. As yo raise
the treadmill, make s re to lift with yo r legs rather
than yo r back. Raise the treadmill about halfway to the
vertical position.
2. Move your right hand to the position shown and hold the
treadmill firmly. Press out on the storage latch. Raise the
treadmill until the storage latch closes over the catch.
Make s re that the storage latch is f lly engaged
over the catch.
To protect the floor or carpet from damage, place a
mat nder the treadmill. Keep the treadmill o t of
direct s nlight. Do not leave the treadmill in the stor-
age position in temperat res above 85° Fahrenheit.

HOW TO MOVE THE TREADMILL
Before moving the treadmill, convert the treadmill to the stor-
age position as described above. Make s re that the stor-
age latch is closed f lly over the catch.
1. Hold the upper ends of the handrails. Place one foot on
the base as shown.
2. Tilt the treadmill back until it rolls freely on the front
wheels. Carefully move the treadmill to the desired loca-
tion. To red ce the risk of inj ry, se extreme ca tion
while moving the treadmill. Do not move the treadmill
over an neven s rface.
3. Place one foot on the base, and carefully lower the tread-
mill until it is resting in the storage position. Base

HOW TO LOWER THE TREADMILL FOR USE
1. Hold the upper end of the treadmill with your right hand
as shown. Using your left thumb, press the storage latch
and hold it. Pivot the treadmill until the frame and foot rail
are past the storage latch.
2. Hold the treadmill firmly with both hands, and lower the
treadmill to the floor. Do not drop the treadmill frame to
the floor. To decrease the possibility of inj ry, bend
yo r legs and keep yo r back straight.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Most treadmill problems can be solved by following the simple steps below. Find the symptom that
applies, and follow the steps listed. If f rther assistance is needed, call o r toll-free HELPLINE at
1-800-736-6879, Monday thro gh Sat rday, 7 a.m. ntil 7 p.m. Central Time (excl ding holidays).
PROBLEM: The power does not t rn on
SOLUTION: a. Make sure that the power cord is plugged into a surge suppressor, and that the surge suppressor
is plugged into a properly grounded outlet (see page 7). Use only a single-outlet surge suppressor
that meets all of the specifications described on page 7. Important: The treadmill is not compatible
with GFCI-equipped outlets.
b. After the power cord has been plugged in, make sure that the key is fully inserted into the console.
c. Check the circuit breaker located on the treadmill
frame near the power cord. If the switch protrudes
as shown, the circuit breaker has tripped. To reset
the circuit breaker, wait for five minutes and then
press the switch back in.
PROBLEM: The power t rns off d ring se
SOLUTION: a. Check the circuit breaker located on the treadmill frame near the power cord (see the drawing
above). If the circuit breaker has tripped, wait for five minutes and then press the switch back in.
b. Make sure that the power cord is plugged in. If the power cord is plugged in, unplug it, wait for five
minutes, and then plug it back in.
c. Remove the key from the console. Reinsert the key fully into the console.
d. If the treadmill still will not run, please call our toll-free HELPLINE.
PROBLEM: The displays of the console do not f nction properly
SOLUTION: a. Check the batteries in the console. If the batteries need to be replaced, see BATTERY
INSTALLATION on page 8. Most problems are the result of drained batteries.
b. Remove the key from the console and UNPLUG THE POWER CORD. Remove the screws from
the hood, and carefully remove the hood.
Locate the Reed Switch (44) and the Magnet (4 ) on
the left side of the Pulley ( 0). Turn the Pulley until the
Magnet is aligned with the Reed Switch. Make s re
that the gap between the Magnet and the Reed
Switch is abo t 1/8”. If necessary, loosen the Screw
(33) and move the Reed Switch slightly. Retighten the
Screw. Re-attach the hood, and run the treadmill for a
few minutes to check for a correct speed reading.

PROBLEM: The incline system does not f nction properly
SOLUTION: a. Make sure that the two wires under the console are fully plugged in (refer to assembly step 4 on
page 6). WARNING: Do not disconnect or connect the wires while the treadmill power cord
is pl gged in.
PROBLEM: The walking belt slows when walked on
SOLUTION: a. Use only a single-outlet surge suppressor that meets all of the specifications described on page 7.
b. If the walking belt is overtightened, treadmill perfor-
mance may decrease and the walking belt may be-
come damaged. Remove the key and UNPLUG THE
POWER CORD. Using the allen wrench, turn both
rear roller adjustment bolts counterclockwise, 1/4 of a
turn. When the walking belt is properly tightened, you
should be able to lift each side of the walking belt 2 to
3 inches off the walking platform. Be careful to keep
the walking belt centered. Plug in the power cord, in-
sert the key and run the treadmill for a few minutes.
Repeat until the walking belt is properly tightened.
c. If the walking belt still slows when walked on, please call our toll-free HELPLINE.
PROBLEM: The walking belt is off-center or slips when walked on
SOLUTION: a. If the walking belt is off-center, first remove the key
and UNPLUG THE POWER CORD. If the walking
belt has shifted to the left, use the allen wrench to
turn the left rear roller bolt clockwise 1/2 of a turn; if
the walking belt has shifted to the right, turn the
bolt counterclockwise 1/2 of a turn. Be careful not to
overtighten the walking belt. Plug in the power cord,
insert the key and run the treadmill for a few minutes.
Repeat until the walking belt is centered.
b. If the walking belt slips when walked on, first remove
the key and UNPLUG THE POWER CORD. Using
the allen wrench, turn both rear roller bolts clockwise,
1/4 of a turn. When the walking belt is correctly tight-
ened, you should be able to lift each side of the walk-
ing belt 2 to 3 inches off the walking platform. Be
careful to keep the walking belt centered. Plug in the
power cord, insert the key and carefully walk on the
treadmill for a few minutes. Repeat until the walking
belt is properly tightened.

CONDITIONING GUIDELINES
The following guidelines will help you to plan your ex-
ercise program. For more detailed exercise informa-
tion, obtain a reputable book or consult your physician.
EXERCISE INTENSITY
Whether your goal is to burn fat or to strengthen your
cardiovascular system, the key to achieving the de-
sired results is to exercise with the proper intensity.
The proper intensity level can be found by using your
heart rate as a guide. The chart below shows recom-
mended heart rates for fat burning and aerobic exer-
cise.
To find the proper heart rate for you, first find your age
on the left side of the chart (ages are rounded off to
the nearest ten years). Next, find the three numbers to
the right of your age. The three numbers are your
“training zone.” The lower two numbers are recom-
mended heart rates for fat burning; the higher number
is the recommended heart rate for aerobic exercise.
Fat B rning
To burn fat effectively, you must exercise at a relatively
low intensity level for a sustained period of time. During
the first few minutes of exercise, your body uses easily
accessible carbohydrate calories for energy. Only after
the first few minutes does your body begin to use
stored fat calories for energy. If your goal is to burn fat,
adjust the speed and incline of the treadmill until your
heart rate is near one of the lower two numbers in your
training zone. It may also be helpful to set the speed
control on the console to FAT BURN to help you main-
tain the proper intensity level (see page 9).
Aerobic Exercise
If your goal is to strengthen your cardiovascular sys-
tem, your exercise must be “aerobic.” Aerobic exercise
is activity that requires large amounts of oxygen for
prolonged periods of time. This increases the demand
on the heart to pump blood to the muscles, and on the
lungs to oxygenate the blood. For aerobic exercise,
adjust the speed and incline of the treadmill until your
heart rate is near the highest number in your training
zone. It may also be helpful to set the speed control on
the console to AEROBIC to help you maintain the
proper intensity level (see page 9).
High Performance Athletic Conditioning
If your goal is high performance athletic conditioning,
set the speed control on the console to PERFOR-
MANCE to help you maintain the proper intensity level
(see page 9). Note: During the first few weeks of your
exercise program, keep your heart rate near the low
end of your training zone.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEART RATE
To measure your
heart rate, stop exer-
cising and place two
fingers on your wrist
as shown. Take a six-
second heartbeat
count, and multiply
the result by ten to
find your heart rate. (A
six-second count is used because your heart rate
drops quickly when you stop exercising.) If your heart
rate is too high or too low, adjust the speed or incline
of the treadmill accordingly.
WORKOUT GUIDELINES
A well-rounded workout includes three important parts:

Start each workout with to 10 minutes of stretching
and light exercise (see SUGGESTED STRETCHES on
page 1 ). A proper warm-up increases your body
temperature, heart rate, and circulation in preparation
for exercise.

Training Zone Exercise
After warming up, increase the intensity of your exer-
cise until your pulse is in your training zone for 20 to
60 minutes. (During the first few weeks of your exer-
cise program, do not keep your pulse in your training
zone for longer than 20 minutes.) Breathe regularly
and deeply as you exercise—never hold your breath.
A Cool-down
Finish each workout with to 10 minutes of stretching
to cool down. This will increase the flexibility of your
muscles and will help to prevent post-exercise problems.
EXERCISE FREQUENCY
To maintain or improve your condition, complete three
workouts each week, with at least one day of rest be-
tween workouts. After a few months, you may com-
plete up to five workouts each week if desired.
The key to success is to make exercise a regular and
enjoyable part of your everyday life.
SUGGESTED STRETCHES
The correct form for several basic stretches is shown at the right.
Move slowly as you stretch—never bounce.
1. Toe To ch Stretch
Stand with your knees bent slightly and slowly bend forward from
your hips. Allow your back and shoulders to relax as you reach
down toward your toes as far as possible. Hold for 1 counts, then
relax. Repeat 3 times. Stretches: Hamstrings, back of knees, and
back.
2. Hamstring Stretch
Sit with one leg extended. Bring the sole of the opposite foot to-
ward you and rest it against the inner thigh of your extended leg.
Reach toward your toes as far as possible. Hold for 1 counts, then
relax. Repeat 3 times for each leg. Stretches: Hamstrings, lower
back, and groin.
3. Calf/Achilles Stretch
With one leg in front of the other, reach forward and place your
hands against a wall. Keep your back leg straight and your back
foot flat on the floor. Bend your front leg, lean forward and move
your hips toward the wall. Hold for 1 counts, then relax. Repeat 3
times for each leg. To cause further stretching of the achilles ten-
dons, bend your back leg as well. Stretches: Calves, achilles ten-
dons, and ankles.
4. Q adriceps Stretch
With one hand against a wall for balance, reach back and grasp
one foot with your other hand. Bring your heel as close to your but-
tocks as possible. Hold for 1 counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times
for both legs. Stretches: Quadriceps and hip muscles.
5. Inner Thigh Stretch
Sit with the soles of your feet together and your knees outward.
Pull your feet toward your groin area as far as possible. Hold for 1
counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times. Stretches: Quadriceps and hip
muscles.
