1 About the product
OZONFILT® OZVb ozone generation systems are designed as
pressurised systems, in which air as the operating gas is fed into
the ozone generator under pressure.
The ozone is generated using medium-frequency high voltage and
is controlled by the primary current. The introduction of the elec‐
tronic power unit, developed in-house by ProMinent, provides
extensive protection for the electrical components (high voltage
transformer and power stage) and also permits the correct digital
display of the ozone output in "grammes/hour".
As a result, any required ozone volume between 3 and 100% of
the nominal output can be set reproducibly, and largely independ‐
ently of voltage and pressure fluctuations.
The use of an integrated pressure swing dryer and a dielectric with
optimum thermal conductivity makes the system extremely com‐
pact.
The unique construction of the generator ensures outstanding
cooling performance with low cooling water consumption and
removes the heat produced quickly before the ozone produced can
decompose due to excessive heat. Operation under pressure
means that the ozone generated can be introduced directly into
water systems with back pressures of up to 4 bar.
Additional booster pumps and injectors can therefore be dispensed
with in many applications.
The integral data logger (optional) writes data to an SD card where
it is stored. A ProMinent application is used to visualise the meas‐
ured values on a PC.

Please read this chapter carefully before operating the system and
keep these operating instructions easily accessible in the vicinity of
the system.
3.1 Labelling of safety information

3.3 Intended use
nThe OZONFILT® OZVb is intended solely for generating and

mitted with the written authorisation of ProMinent GmbH, Hei‐
delberg.
nThe system may not be operated in conditions other than those
described in this document.
nThe system is not intended for operation outside.

the tasks assigned to him and recognise possible dangers based
on his/her technical training and experience, as well as knowledge
of applicable regulations.

and possible dangers that could result from improper behaviour, as
well as having been instructed in the required protective equipment
and protective measures.

The Service department refers to service technicians, who have

to work on the system.

3.5 General Safety Requirements
nTo ensure maximum safety, all persons, who are involved in
working with the ozone generation system, must be familiar
with the safety regulations and operation of the ozone genera‐
tion system.
nThe ozone generation system must be used in compliance with
all relevant regulations. The use of the system for a purpose
other than the purpose intended by the manufacturer will incur
unforeseeable risks.
nAll guarantee and liability claims on the part of the system
operator will not be admitted following interference by unau‐
thorised personnel.
nPlease observe all locally applicable
–laws
– health and safety regulations
– environmental regulations
nImmediately report any malfunctions or risks, which you, as the
user, notice to the operator of the system or to your supervi‐
sors.
nAs a matter of principle no protective or safety equipment may
be removed while the system is in operation. Never attempt to
bypass the safety equipment.
nIf protective or safety equipment has to be removed to set up
or service the plant or to carry out repairs, switch off the
system beforehand and ensure that it cannot be reconnected.
Prior to switching the system on, refit the safety and protective
equipment and ensure that it is complete, securely fitted and
that it can perform its task properly.
nWork on technical equipment (such as work on the pneumatic,
hydraulic or electrical equipment) may only be done by appro‐
priately qualified technical personnel.
nAll safety and warning signs on the plant must be visible at all
times.
3.6 Safety equipment
The safety equipment is described in the "Assembly and installa‐
tion” chapter.

3.7 Notes for the system operator
Prior to commissioning the system, the operator is obliged to:
nObtain current safety-related information on ozone and ozonif‐
erous water.
He must create the legal framework for safe operation of the
system, based on the information provided in the data sheets con‐
cerning health and safety, water and environmental protection and
taking into consideration the actual operating environment on site.
The operator is obliged to produce operating instructions (including
information on hazard prevention, alarm plan, ...) entitled "Handling
ozone".

4.2 Description of the ozone generation system OZONFILT® OZVb
4.2.1 Air conditioning system (air conditioning unit, optional)
OZVb systems with the identity code design "Cooling” - “1” or “3”
are equipped with an air conditioning unit. The air conditioning unit
regulates the temperature of the electrical components in the con‐
trol cabinet to a pre-set temperature by the mechanical tempera‐
ture controller (17).
The control cabinet's temperature control indirectly also monitors
the operation of the air conditioning unit.
4.2.2 The drying unit of the OZONFILT® OZVb 1-4 A
The system requires compressed, de-oiled or oil-free compressed
air at the inlet of the pressure regulating valve (27). A detailed
description of the pressure range, quality of compressed air and
temperature can be found in the "Technical data” chapter. Fit a
filter assembly with automatic condensation drainage between the
compressed air system and the inlet of the pressure regulating
valve (27) when operating compressed air systems, which are fed
by oil-greased compressors. The filter assembly should consist of
at least one particle filter and an oil filter and is optionally available
– see identity code.
The compressed and, if necessary, de-oiled compressed air
passes through the pressure regulating valve with pressure sensor
(1) to the inlet of the solenoid valve block (39). Ensure that there is
a constant system priming pressure set on the pressure regulating
valve (27). The pressure at the inlet is monitored by an electronic
pressure switch and needs to be a minimum of 4.5 bar; an alarm is
emitted in the event of lower pressure. The system priming pres‐
sure can be read on the pressure sensor on the outside of the cab‐
inet. The permissible values can be found in the "Technical data”
chapter.
Before the compressed air can be used for ozone generation, it
has to be dried by the pressure swing dryer integrated within the
system to a dewpoint of approx. 60 °C. The gas flows for the pres‐
sure swing dryer are controlled by the solenoid valve block (39).
This is fed by the control (70) with the relevant electrical signals.
The storage tanks (26) of the pressure swing dryer are filled with a
drying agent that draws out the residual moisture from the com‐
pressed air. The two drying units (26) alternate between a drying
and a regeneration phase. This operating mode ensures that the
ozone generator is permanently supplied with dry air for ozone
generation. Compressed ambient air flows through the storage
tank (26), which is used for drying, in the direction of the ozone
generator.

A partial flow of the dried air is expanded in the counterflow to
atmospheric pressure and discarded to regenerate the drying
agent located in the other storage tank. This process removes the
moisture adsorbed in the previous cycle from the drying agent and
prepares it for the next drying phase. The so-called regeneration
air can escape from the system cabinet through the outlet (51).
The pressure swing dryer is designed for minimal consumption of
compressed air and energy. The volume of the drying agent
present in the storage tanks (26) is designed in such a way that the
drying process produces dewpoints of approx. - 60 °C even at a
low system priming pressure level (see "Technical data" chapter).
This drastically reduces the energy required for compression.
The pressure sensor (43) measures the operating pressure of the
drying process. The flow volume of gas required for ozone genera‐
tion can be set using the throttle valve (4). The gas pressure for
ozone generation is monitored by the pressure sensor (6) and
limited by the pressure relief valve (8). The actual gas pressure in
the ozone generator depends on the pressure of the process water
at the point of injection, the back pressure of the pneumatic equip‐
ment (5, 33) between the ozone inlet and the point of injection, and
the flow rate of the gas. The latter is measured by the gas flow
sensor (11).
Once the gas has passed the gas flow sensor (11), it reaches the
ozone generator (2).
4.2.3 The ozone generator
The ozone generator (2) consists of an earthed metal outer pipe, a
high-voltage electrode and a heat-conducting dielectric.
The gas passes through the slot between the high-voltage elec‐
trode and the dielectric into the ozone generator, where ozone is
formed by silent electrical discharge.
The silent electrical discharge is enabled by a medium-range fre‐
quency alternating high voltage signal applied between the high
voltage electrode and the outer pipe, and causes a portion of the
oxygen to be converted into ozone. The heat generated during the
discharge is released through the wall of the heat-conducting die‐
lectric to the cooling water flowing between the outer pipe made of
metal and the outer surface of the dielectric. This direct cooling and
the exceptional heat conductivity of the dielectric provide excellent
heat transmission to the cooling water and thus an outstanding
degree of efficiency of the ozone generating elements.
4.2.4 Ozone gas transfer equipment
From the outlet of the ozone generator, the ozone gas mixture
passes via the solenoid valve (5) to the ozone outlet of the OZON‐
FILT® OZVb. Stainless steel pipes or PTFE pipes (accessory)
transport the ozoniferous gas from the ozone outlet of the OZON‐
FILT® OZVb to the static helical mixer (31).

4.2.5 Backflow preventer (optional)
The backflow preventer (63) consists of a non-return valve and a
water trap with level monitoring. Water flowing back from the point
of injection is collected in the water trap and detected by the elec‐
tronic level switch. This switches off the ozone system to avoid
serious damage to the system. Before recommissioning the ozone
system, the water trap needs to be drained and the system’s gas
system dried, if necessary.
4.2.6 Static helical mixer (optional or accessory)
The ozone gas mixture is fed to the process water flow via the non-
return valve (33) fitted directly at the inlet of the static helical mixer
(31). The non-return valve (33) prevents the backflow of the water
in the pipe between the ozone outlet of the OZONFILT® OZVb and
the inlet of the non-return valve (33).
The static helical mixer (31) accommodates individual mixing ele‐
ments for mixing the ozone into the process water. The mixing
equipment has to be appropriately configured to the process water
throughput for optimum incorporation of the ozone into the process
water. There cannot be optimum mixing if the throughput is too
low.
4.2.7 Cooling water system
The cooling water has the task of absorbing and dissipating the
heat produced during ozone generation in the chamber of the
ozone generator (2). This heat dissipation is important to keep the
ozoniferous gas at a low temperature to maintain the excellent
ozone output and protect the internal components of the ozone
generator.
The cooling water travels from the cooling water inlet to the angle
valve (24), at which the flow can be regulated. From there the
cooling water enters the ozone generator (2).
A flow sensor (9) downstream of the cooling water outlet of the
ozone generator switches off the system if the flow falls below the
requisite minimum coolant flow rate.
The cooling water temperature is also measured by a temperature
sensor (42) and the system is switched off with a corresponding
fault alert, should the maximum temperature be exceeded.

4.2.8 Electrical system components
