INTRODUCTION
The 5,000 lb 12V DC Electric Winch is a heavy-duty tool that
can run off a 12 volt battery or be operated with a hand winch.
The winch is portable with an adaptor plate to attach to any
hitch ball. It may also be permanently attached to a vehicle
bumper, trailer or other suitable surface. The winch has a
molded handle for carrying.

PERSONAL SAFETY
WARNING! Wear personal protective equipment approved by
the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or American
National Standards Institute (ANSI).
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
1. Always wear impact safety goggles that provide front and
side protection for the eyes. Eye protection equipment
should comply with CSA Z94.3-07 or ANSI Z87.1 standards
based on the type of work performed.
2. Wear gloves that provide protection based on the work
materials or to reduce the effects of tool vibration.
2.1 Do not wear gloves when operating a tool that can
snag the material and pull the hand into the tool.
3. Wear protective clothing designed for the work
environment and tool.
4. Non-skid footwear is recommended to maintain footing
and balance in the work environment.
5. Wear steel toe footwear or steel toe caps to prevent a foot
injury from falling objects.
PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
Control the tool, personal movement and the work
environment to avoid personal injury or damage to the tool.
1. Do not operate any tool when tired or under the influence
of drugs, alcohol or medications.
2. Avoid wearing clothes or jewelry that can become
entangled with the moving parts of a tool. Keep long hair
covered or bound.
3. Do not overreach when operating the tool. Proper footing
and balance enables better control in unexpected situations.

SPECIFIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
WARNING! DO NOT let comfort or familiarity with product
(gained from repeated use) replace strict adherence to the
tool safety rules. If you use this tool unsafely or incorrectly,
you can suffer serious personal injury.
1. Use the correct tool for the job. This tool was designed for
a specific function. Do not modify or alter this tool or use it
for an unintended purpose.
2. Do not use the tool if any parts are damaged, broken or
misplaced. Repair or replace the parts.
3. All users must understand the operation of all controls and
learn how to stop the winch quickly in case of emergency.
4. Keep hands clear of the winch and steel cable when
spooling the line in or out. Hold the cable by the strap.
Fingers caught in the hook or fairlead may be pulled into
the mechanism and crushed or pinched.
5. Make sure the winch is fixed to a solid support structure
that can withstand the towing capacity.
6. Never fully extend the cable while under load. Leave a
minimum of five wraps on the drum.
7. Do not exceed the winch load capacity.
7.1 Do not use the winch if damaged or it was subjected to
a dynamic shock load. Have the winch inspected and
repaired by a qualified service technician.
8. Always use proper couplings when connecting the winch
cable hook, sling, eyebolt or other accessory to the load.
Never connect the hook back to the cable. This causes
cable damage. Always use a sling or chain of suitable
strength.
9. Do not use inappropriate attachments to extend the length
of the winch cable.

10. Do not lift items vertically. The winch was designed for
horizontal use only.
11. Do not pull the steel cable around or over corners.
12. Stay well away from the winch, steel cable and load when
under tension. A cable that breaks under tension can
whiplash and inflict death or a serious injury.
12.1 Use a winch rope dampener to absorb the cable’s
energy should it break.
13. Secure the load after moving it with the winch. Do not rely
on the winch to hold a load in position for an extended
period of time. Never leave the load unattended.
14. Apply blocks to a vehicle while connecting and
disconnecting the winch cable.
15. Observe the spooling of the cable onto the drum. Side
pulls can cause the cable to pileup at one end of the
drum. To correct uneven stacking, spool out that section
of cable and move it to the other end of the drum and
continue winching. Uneven spooling causing cable pileup
can interfere with the winch tie rods causing damage to
the winch.
16. Do not use the winch to transport animals or people.
17. Place the vehicle’s transmission in neutral to avoid
damaging it while winching.
18. Never move the vehicle to ‘assist’ the attached winch pull a
load. This may place too much stress on the winch and
cable, causing damage to the mechanism or rope.
19. Do not use this winch with a recovery strap. The strap will
stretch and may break, causing an injury.
20. Do not weld the winch’s mounting bolts to the frame.
Secure with hardware and check for tightness from time-
to-time.
21. Always ensure hook latch is closed before using the winch.

22. Do not use the hand crank to ‘assist’ the electric motor. This
can damage the internal mechanism.
23. Only use wire rope that is designed for the winch. Do not use
thinner or longer wire ropes or connect wire ropes together.
24. This winch is not designed to be submerged.
ELECTRICAL SAFETY
WARNING! Do not touch or handle a live tool with any part
of your body that is wet or damp. Wet skin reduces
resistance to electrical current, increasing the danger of a
serious or fatal shock.
1. Disconnect tool from power source before cleaning,
servicing, changing parts/accessories or when not in use.
2. Protect yourself against electric shocks when working on
electrical equipment. Avoid body contact with grounded
surfaces. There is an increased chance of electrical shock if
your body is grounded.
3. Water entering a tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
4. In the event of a power failure, turn off the machine as soon
as the power is interrupted. The possibility of accidental
injury could occur if the power returns and the unit is not
switched off.
5. Do not alter any parts of the tool or accessories. All parts
and accessories are designed with built-in safety features
that may be compromised if altered.
6. Make certain the power source conforms to requirements
of your equipment (see Specifications).
7. When wiring an electrically driven device, follow all
electrical and safety codes, as well as the most recent
Canadian Electrical Code (CE) and Canadian Centre for
Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS).
WARNING! All wiring should be performed by a qualified
electrician.

BATTERY PRECAUTIONS
WARNING! Connect and disconnect the DC output clips only
after setting any control switches to the OFF position. Never
allow the clips to touch each other.
1. Lead-acid batteries generate oxygen and hydrogen. These
gases can be explosive. Keep batteries well ventilated. Remove
any source of ignition such as an open flame or a tool like a
heater from the area. Sparks may also ignite the gas.
2. Lead batteries contain sulfuric acid, also referred to as
electrolyte or battery acid. The acid is corrosive and can
cause a skin burn if leaking or splashed. The acid may also
pose a threat if inhaled or ingested accidentally. The acid
can destroy normal clothing and injure the flesh
underneath. Wear splash-proof goggles and protective
clothing when handling a battery.
3. Batteries are heavy due to the weight of the lead and liquid
contained inside. A lead-acid battery could weigh upwards
of 50-60 lbs. Use safe lifting methods if moving the battery.
BATTERY LEADS SAFETY
WARNING! DO NOT touch the two clamps together while the
unit is connected to a vehicle battery. This will cause a
discharge and may result in electrocution.
1. Do not operate this tool if the leads are frayed or damaged
as an electric shock or surge may occur, resulting in
personal injury or property damage.
1.1 Inspect the leads for cracks, fraying or other faults in
the insulation before each use.
1.2 Discontinue use if the leads feel more than comfortably
warm while operating the tool.
2. Keep all connections dry and off the ground to reduce
the risk of electric shock. Do not touch the leads with
wet hands.

3. Prevent damage to the leads by observing the following:
3.1 Keep the leads away from heat, oil, sharp edges or
moving parts.
3.2 Place the leads in a position that prevents them from
coming into contact with the tool and from getting
caught by the workpiece. The leads should always stay
behind the tool.
UNPACKING
WARNING! Do not operate the tool if any part is missing.
Replace the missing part before operating. Failure to do so
could result in a malfunction and personal injury.
Remove the parts and accessories from the packaging and
inspect for damage. Make sure that all items in the Identification
Key are included.

MOUNTING THE WINCH
Three 3/8 in. screws, lock washers, washers and nuts, SAE
Grade 5 or higher, are required to permanently mount the
winch. This hardware is not included with the winch.
1. Choose a location on the vehicle that can withstand the
stress of the maximum weight capacity (see Specifications).
You may install a steel reinforcement plate or additional
bracing to strength the location.
2. Make sure there is adequate room for the winch and a
flat surface for it to sit on. Verify the structure where the
bolts will go contains no hidden wiring or components.
Relocate either the winch or the wiring/components if
there is overlap.
3. Mark the holes along the center using the winch’s base as a
template. Reach through the front or back opening to make
the marks.
4. Drill each hole with a 3/8 in. drill bit to accommodate the
bolts.
5. Position the winch to align the bolt holes on the bottom
with the pre-drilled holes.
6. Insert each bolt through the winch bottom and structure.
Access the bolt holes through the front or rear of the winch.
7. Slide a washer, lock washer and nut over each bolt end.
Tighten the nuts.
TEMPORARY MOUNTING
The winch may be mounted onto a ball hitch with the adapter
plate (A).
1. Insert three screws through the top of the adapter plate.
2. Place a washer over the protruding bolt end and twist a nut
onto the bolt. Tighten partially, stopping several turn from
the plate.

3. Place the winch over the bolts, matching the triangular hole
pattern with the bolt heads. Pull the winch forward slowly
so the bolt heads enters the bolt’s keyhole slots. Push the
bolts up slightly to avoid snags.
4. Tighten all three nuts once the bolts are firmly seated.
5. Place the adapter opening over the hitch ball and pull
forward so the narrow end is against the ball’s neck.
6. The winch is ready for use.
BATTERY CABLE CONNECTION
The battery cables (G) plug directly into the male socket (#9)
on the winch’s right-side. A groove on the cable plug ensures
the polarity is correct at the connection.
Remove the terminal wingnuts from the battery. Slide the red
wire ring connector over the battery’s positive (+) terminal.
°Slide the black wire ring connector onto the battery’s negative
(-) terminal. Tighten the wingnuts and the winch is ready for
the task.
REMOTE CONTROL CONNECTION
The remote plugs into the remote socket (#8) next to the cable
socket. The grove on the remote socket plug ensure the
connection is properly oriented. Remove the plug and reseal
the socket when the task is complete.
HAND CRANK INSTALLATION
NOTICE! Do not use the hand crank to ‘assist’ the electric
motor. This can damage the internal mechanism.
Make sure there is enough room to operate the hank crank
when the winch is installed.
1. Remove the nut from the gear shaft.
2. Slide the hand crank (D) over the shaft.
3. Tighten the nut to secure.

OPERATION
BEFORE FIRST USE
The steel cable must be broken-in before using to pull a heavy
load. The break-in process will stretch the cable, ensure the
individual wires are seated and the wire compacted. Run the
winch with a light load of approximately 500 lb several times,
before normal use.
Also use the weight when spooling the cable onto the winch.
This will provide the correct tension when spooling.
OPERATION
This winch is designed for intermittent use only. Do not run the
motor for more than a minute. Allow the motor to cool for
several minutes between tasks.
This winch does not have a manual clutch. The brake will
automatically hold the load. Use the remote or hand crank to
release tension or spool out line if needed.
1. Make sure the operator can safely control the winch before
performing any tasks with it and confirm they are familiar
with all safety and operating instructions.
2. Inspect the winch, steel cable (E) and terminal tackle before
each use. Replace any damaged or frayed components.
3. Connect the winch to the battery or install the hand crank.
4. Press the reverse button or use the hand crank to spool the
cable out until you have enough. Make sure there is always
five turns of cable on the winch drum.
5. Attach the steel cable to the load with a hook, shackle,
sling or chain capable of withstanding the strain from
winching the load. Make sure the terminal tackle is secure
to avoid an unintended disconnection while winching.
5.1 Consult a vehicle owner’s manual for anchor points to
connect the steel cable’s terminal tackle.

6. Check that the line is straight without kinks or twisted. Do
not wrap the steel cable around the load or wind it around
corners or obstacles.
7. Place a dampening device (not included) on the steel cable.
8. Press and hold the remote control’s retract button or turn the
hand crank until the slack is removed from the steel cable.
9. Recheck the connections to ensure the terminal tackle will
not shift.
10. Press and hold the remote control’s retract button or turn
the hand crank to pull the load towards the winch. Release
the button when the load is in the final position
10.1 Secure the load in place if necessary. Use wheel chocks
for a vehicle.
11. Press the reverse button or turn the hand crank to remove
tension on the steel cable. Disengage and remove the hook
or terminal tackle.
12. Hold the hook strap to keep some pressure on the winch
and retract the steel cable. Make sure each wire wrap fits
snugly with the next wrap. Stop when within a few feet.
Spool the final wraps with the hand crank.
13. Disconnect from the power supply once the hook reaches
the winch fairlead.
14. Disconnect the battery cable and remote control cable.
Reseal each socket. Store the cables.
WINCHING LIMITATIONS
There are several limitation that can affect the time duration,
power consumption and maximum weight a winch can move. A
snatch block will improve the winch’s performance. Make sure
to follow all safety and operation instructions from the snatch
block’s manufacturer.

CABLE ANGLE
The winch does not have a roller or hawse fairlead. The angle
between the winch and the load should be as close to zero
as possible.
A load may be off to one side, introducing an unwanted angle for
the cable. Find an anchor point at a 90° angle to the winch and
install a pulley to connect to the load. Pull the load to the pulley
and then connect directly to the load to complete the task.
POWER
The maximum load the
winch can pull is
diminished with each
additional layer of steel
cable around the winch’s
drum. Table 1 shows the
maximum amount of
weight it can pull and the
length of cable remaining
on the drum.
Whenever possible, remove as much steel cable off the winch to
pull with the maximum power. Keep five wraps of steel cable on
the drum at all times to prevent the steel cable from slipping off.
Use a snatch block to move a heavier load that is close to the
winch. This will double the amount of line outside the fairlead
and increase the winch’s pulling power at close range.
LINE SPEED
The heavier the load, the
longer it will take the winch
to move the load to the
desired location. Consult
Table 2 to determine how
fast the line will be drawn
into the winch.
A snatch block will halve
the line speed when
pulling the load.

POWER CONSUMPTION
The winch requires more amps to move a heavier load. Consult
Tab le 2 to determine the amperage consumption based on the
load’s weight.
A snatch block increases a winch’s pulling power without an
increase in amperage. Using a snatch block can halve the
power required.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
1. Maintain the tool with care. A tool in good condition is
efficient, easier to control and will have fewer problems.
2. Inspect the tool components periodically. Repair or replace
damaged or worn components. Only use identical
replacement parts when servicing.
3. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
4. Only use accessories intended for use with this tool.
5. Keep the tool handles clean, dry and free from oil/grease at
all times.
6. Maintain the tool’s labels and name plates. These carry
important information. If unreadable or missing, contact
Princess Auto Ltd. for replacements.
WARNING! Only qualified service personnel should repair the
tool. An improperly repaired tool may present a hazard to the
user and/or others.
CLEANING
Clean the external surfaces with cloth after each use. A soft
toothbrush may be used in hard to reach places.
LUBRICATION
The winch is permanently lubricated and does not require
additional lubrication. The exception is if the winch is
submerged in water. Open the housing, dry and have a
qualified technician re-lubricate the winch.

Lubricate the steel cable with a light oil from time to time to
prevent corrosion.
STORAGE
When not in use for an extended period, apply a thin coat of
lubricant to the steel parts to avoid rust. Remove the lubricant
before using the tool again.
DISPOSAL
Recycle a tool damaged beyond repair at the appropriate facility.
Contact your local municipality for a list of disposal facilities or
by-laws for electronic devices, batteries, oil or other toxic liquids.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Visit a Princess Auto Ltd. location for a solution if the tool does
not function properly or parts are missing. If unable to do so,
have a qualified technician service the tool.
