1 Description
The ePAQ-9405 is a communications gateway and distributed I/O module, in a 19 in. 2U
enclosure (rack-mount or DIN-mount). It provides 12 status inputs, 4 analog Inputs, and 3
momentary or latching control points.
Hardware communications ports include RS-232, Fiber, RS-485, and 10/100 Ethernet
(via copper or Fiber). An IRIG port (unmodulated IRIG via RS-485 or Fiber;
modulated IRIG via BNC connector) and a USB maintenance port are also provided.
ePAQ-9405 communications protocols includes DNP 3, Modbus, and QUICS Servers, as
well as DNP 3, Modbus, PLCC, Event Logger, and Web Access Clients.
I/O and input power connections are via plug-in terminal blocks. Front panel mounted
power and local/remote rocker switches are provided, as are dip switches for address
settings. LEDs provide indications for status, controls, local/remote and communications
port activity.
The ePAQ-9405 provides highly secure control and monitoring of status points with 1
msec Sequence of Events (SOE) and time tagging in critical environments where
highly secure operation is required.
Local diagnostics and configuration are accomplished via a Maintenance Port (USB)
connection to a PC. The maintenance port is used to send/read configuration
settings and perform diagnostic functions.
Features include a real-time clock with power-failure backup circuitry (no battery
replacement required). The clock can be synchronized by an IRIG-B receiver through
BNC, RS485 or fiber optic port or through its DNP3 communication ports from a
Master Station or Data Concentrator.
Input power options include 12/24/48/125Vdc, as well as 120/240/277Vac. A
local/remote switch is included for controls. LEDs provide indications for
communication port activity, status point keying, CPU heartbeat, system 3V power,
and local/remote switch position.
All of the operations of the ePAQ-9405 are under software control. The program
resides in dedicated non-volatile program (FLASH) memory area.
The ePAQ-9405 is configured using QEI’s ConfigWiz 2.0 Configuration Program, and
a ePAQ-9405 Template. Refer to the ConfigWiz 2.0 User’s Guide (UM-2018) and
the ePAQ-9405 addendum contained in the same manual.

The ePAQ-9405 accepts a variety of input voltage sources, such as 12, 24, 48, and
125Vdc. The unit may also be powered by 120, 240 or 277Vac.

4.2 Dip Switches
One bank of four DIP switches is available through the front panel. Dip switches are
used for application specific options (see the appropriate ConfigWiz 2.0 addendum
for further information). The exception is switch 1, which is used for safe boot mode.

a valid Irig signal is received on a ePAQ Irig port:

Dual LED arrays indicate TX and RX data for communications ports
2, 3, and 4. The arrays are located to the left of each port. The upper
LED of each array indicates data transmitted out from the port. The
lower LED indicates data received by the port.

is communicating at 100 Mbps (LED on) or 10 Mbps (LED off).

7 Communications Ports
7.1 Port 1 (J3): USB Maintenance Panel
This port is a standard USB type B port for connection to a PC. It is used as a
Maintenance Port, to program and troubleshoot the ePAQ-9405. Using a PC with a
USB port and a straight USB type A-B cable, the ePAQ can be accessed in one of
two ways, 1) via ConfigWiz 2.0, to download configurations and flashload program
link files, 2) via Hyperterminal (or other such terminal emulator program), to gain
access to included test panel functions.
For a list of available functions, refer to the Test Panel section in this user guide.

communications device, such as a RS-232 interface modem or radio. RS-232

The Push-to-Talk (PTT) signal can be used to key an external radio, if needed. This
pin is in the form of an open collector output.
7.3 Port 3 (J5): Fiber Optic
This generic fiber optic serial communications port has one transmitter (TX) and one
receiver (RX). It supports multimode fiber using ST connectors. A wide variety of
communications bit rates can be supported.

7.4 Port 4 (TB5): RS485
This port is a standard 2 wire RS-485, and conforms to the RS-485 specification. It
uses surge suppression circuitry to clamp any input voltage transient and noise to
chassis ground.
The port is capable of supporting multiple devices over a single twisted pair of wires.
A 3 terminal plug-in terminal block is used for connections to external communication
equipment.

This single port accepts either a multimode fiber transceiver with ST connectors (J6),
or a shielded RJ45 jack for CAT5 cable (J7). It supports either 100BaseFX Ethernet

The ePAQ-9405 includes three control points. Each control point can be configured
as a pair of momentary relays (one for “trip” and one for “close”) or as a single
latching relay (trip/close). See the ordering information to choose controls as
momentary or latching on a per point basis.
8.1 Momentary Form 1C Controls
Momentary Form 1C control points use two sets of form 1C (SPDT) contacts (one
set for Trip, the other set for Close) at the terminal blocks:
