HOW YOUR WATER CONDITIONER WORKS
Your Rainfresh Softener re oves hardness using a process called Ion Exchange. In this process, when hard water flows
through the unit, hardness-causing inerals such as Calciu & Magnesiu , are trapped by the edia (called Resin) and an
equivalent a ount of sodiu ions are released into the water. When the capacity of the resin to trap hardness inerals is
exhausted, the unit is re-charged by softener salt in a process called Regeneration. During regeneration, the unit first
backwashes to re ove any sedi ent, rust or other particulates, that ay have accu ulated in the unit. This is followed by
introduction of a saturated salt solution (brine) that bu ps off the trapped hardness to drain and recharges the resin with
sodiu .
Once you progra the unit at the ti e of installation, the regeneration process happens auto atically. All you need to do is
to ensure that there is always enough salt in the salt tank.
CAUTIONS BEFORE INSTALLATION
-Install a pressure regulator and water ha er arrestor if pressure exceeds axi u rating at any ti e. Note: If
dayti e pressure is over 80 psi, night ti e pressure ay exceed axi u pressure rating.
-Do not install on water that is icrobiologically unsafe without adequate disinfection before or after the unit. For
effective disinfection install a Rainfresh Drinking Water Syste or Rainfresh UV disinfection syste .
-For use on cold water only.
-Only use thread seal tape (Teflon® tape) for fitting connections into unit. DO NOT USE pipe dope or chemical
sealants.
-If water pipes are used to ground electrical syste , install ju per wire (#4 gauge solid copper wire) across the unit
to aintain proper grounding of your electrical syste
-rotect your unit from freezing - drain the unit if freezing te peratures exist.
-NOTE: IF SOLDER TY E FITTINGS ARE USED DO NOT USE torch near inlet/outlet connections. All solder joints
should be ade before joining pipe to filter head.
-DO NOT over-tighten etal fittings on to unit connections.
-Follow all applicable province/state and local regulations.
-You will need softener salt with this unit (not included). Softener salt is sold at ost retailers.
-Place the unit & salt tank on a flat level surface. Do not place shi s under the unit to level it. The weight of the unit
full of water and salt can cause the tank to crack at the shi .
-The unit should only be oved by 2 or ore people due to heavy weight. Failure to do so can result in back or other
injury.
-The unit ust be installed in an area where there is reasonable access to the salt tank for regular salt filling.

INSTALLATION

Electrical Requirements:
The auto atic control valve requires a constant power supply - 110V AC. We reco end a GFCI (ground fault circuit
interrupter) outlet within 5 feet of the softener. Extension cords are not reco ended.
If water pipes are used to ground electrical syste , you will need to install a ju per wire across the filter unit.
Unpacking the unit
The unit includes:
1) The ain unit with electronic etered auto atic control valve and bypass valve
2) Salt tank with brine float and 3/8” tubing to connect to ain unit
3) Inlet outlet elbow fittings (2 )
4) Allen key to open and close bypass valve
5) Drain hose – 15 ft
6) AC power adapter
7) Instruction anual
Unpack the unit and place it at the location where you intend to install the unit.
Stand back and look at the softener to ake sure it is standing straight up and not tilted to one side. Make sure your
chosen location will be fairly level, dry, and protected fro possible freezing conditions. The softener can sit directly on
the floor and will not corrode. DO NOT set the softener or salt tank onto ake shift platfor s
as this can cause da age or ay cause it to topple.
The syste has 3 connections - an inlet, an outlet, and a drain line connection. If you are
looking at the back of the unit (fig 2A), the inlet is on the left side. Warning: Make sure that
you have correctly identified the inlet of the syste . REVERSING THE CONNECTIONS WILL
RESULT IN RESIN BEADS BEING THROWN INTO YOUR HOME'S PLUMBING SYSTEM CAUSING
DAMAGE TO IT AS WELL AS THE SOFTENER.

If you have a private well, turn the power off to the pu p then shut off the ain water shut off valve. If you have
unicipal water, si ply shut off the ain valve. Go to a faucet, (preferably on the lowest floor of the house) turn on the
cold water until all pressure is relieved and the flow of water stops.
Attach the bypass valve to the control valve by pushing it in and secure it with the etal clips and screws (Fig 2).
Fully push the inlet/outlet elbow fittings into the open end of the bypass valve and lock th e in by inserting the
red locking clips into the slots (Fig 3)
For ease of installation, orient the inlet/outlet fittings in the direction of the
inlet & outlet pipes by si ply rotating the (Fig 4)

Plu b in the ½” flexible plastic drain line running fro the softener (white
elbow hose fitting). This can be ran up overhead or down along the floor. If
running drain line ore than 30 feet overhead, increasing the line size to
3/4" will be required. Please follow your local health dept. Codes for where
to run softener discharge water. NEVER MAKE A DIRECT CONNECTION INTO
A WASTE WATER DRAIN. A PHYSICAL AIR GAP OF AT LEAST 3" SHOULD BE
USED TO AVOID BACTERIA AND WASTEWATER TRAVELLING BACK
THROUGH THE DRAIN LINE INTO THE SOFTENER. There will be a fair a ount
of pressure on this flexible plastic drain line when the softener is in the
regeneration ode, so secure it to the drain fitting by a hose cla p. Also
secure the drain tube to the wall or ceiling.
Re ove the lid on the salt tank. Insert the brine well into the appropriate
slot at the botto of the salt tank (fig 5A). Slide the 3/8” tube through the
hole on the side of the salt tank and connect it to the brine float as shown
in fig 6A.
Attach the other end of the 3/8” tube to the brine outlet on the control
valve (fig 6B). The salt tank is flexible and can be oved around the
softener as long as it is connected to it through the 3/8” brine tube.
Add about 5 gallons of water in the salt tank. This is not a critical level but
just helps with the process for the first regeneration. You can then add 1 or
2 bags (20 Kg bags) of salt to start with.
Turn the ain house shut-off valve on slightly and watch for leaks. Make
sure a faucet is on so ewhere and that any aerator is re oved to avoid
clogging fro loosened scale in the pipes. If you have no leaks, proceed to
the next steps.
Using the Allen key (included), turn the bypass inlet slightly to allow water
to run into the unit (Fig 7). CAUTION: The water should initially fill the tank
slowly. Once the tank is full of water, you can open valve fully. This prevents
resin fro being pushed up into the control head by the initial surge of
water going in.
Make sure there are no leaks in your plu bing before proceeding.
At the nearest cold treated water tap re ove the faucet screen and open the faucet. Using the Allen key (included),
open the outlet side of the bypass valve and let water run a few inutes or until the syste is free of any air or foreign
aterial resulting fro the plu bing work. Close the water tap when water runs clean, and then proceed to start up
instructions.
Connect the control valve to the AC power source.
NOTE: Your unit is not yet ready or service until you complete STEP 7 in startup programming, as ollows

START U & ROGRAMMING
The control valve is controlled with si ple, user-friendly electronics displayed on an LCD screen. When power is first
supplied, the valve electronics ay take up to two inutes to initialize. During this ti e the screen will show “INTIALIZING
WAIT PLEASE”. Do not touch any buttons at this ti e. When the valve reaches the service position, it will display the
following infor ation in sequence:

The control valve has a display screen and 4 buttons
VALVE ROGRAMMING
The valve has 2 levels of progra ing – Level 1 and Level 2
You will need to only go through Level 1 progra ing to start up your unit. Level 2 progra ing is factory set and
can be changed only if desired.

This value is the axi u water hardness in grains per gallon (GPG) of the raw water supply. If you have the reading
in PPM or g/L, si ply ultiply by 17.1 to get the reading in GPG. You ust also add (5 x iron level in PPM) to the
hardness value.
For exa ple, if your water hardness is 20 GPG and the iron level is 0.3 PPM, the hardness value you enter ust be 20
+ 5 x (0.3) = 20 + 1.5 = 21.5 GPG
Note: If you do not know your water hardness, please call custo er service to arrange for a free water test. In the
eanti e, you can leave the hardness value at default setting.
STE 5: Setting Vacation Mode
This function ay be activated during a prolonged absence, such as a vacation for ore than 2 weeks. The syste
will perfor a brief backwash and rinse based on advanced setting. The purpose is to keep the water fresh in the
softener tank and plu bing syste .
STE 6: LEVEL 2 USER ROGRAMMING
When the Level 2 Master Progra ing Mode is entered, all available option setting displays ay be viewed and set
as needed. Depending on current option settings, so e para eters cannot be viewed or set.
Press and hold “ UP AND DOWN” together for three seconds to enter Level Two Master Progra ing.
The following chart indicates choices and default settings. Note: Default settings are indicated in bold letters

STE 7: Manual Regeneration
If screen is locked, press “ MENU” for 3 seconds to unlock. To initiate an i ediate regeneration, press the SET/REGEN
button for 3 seconds, an option for “Dela ed” or “Immediate” regeneration will appear. Press the SET/REGEN button
again and “Dela ed” will begin flashing. Now press the down arrow button and “Immediate” will flash. Press the
SET/REGEN button once and then press the enu button once. Valve will i ediately start anual regeneration.

OTHER FEATURES
Control Operation During a ower Failure
In the event of a power failure, the valve will keep track of the ti e and day for 48 hours. The progra ed settings
are stored in a non-volatile e ory and will not be lost during a power failure. If power fails while the unit is in
regeneration, the valve will finish regeneration after power is restored. If the valve isses a scheduled regeneration
due to a power failure, it will queue regeneration at the next regeneration ti e once power is restored.
Safety Float
The brine tank is equipped with a safety float which prevents your brine tank fro overfilling as a result of a
alfunction such as a power failure.
New Sounds
You ay notice new sounds as your water softener operates. The regeneration cycle lasts approxi ately 2 hours.
During this ti e, you ay hear water running inter ittently to the drain.
Manual Bypass
In the case of e ergency, such as an overflowing brine tank, you can isolate your water softener fro the water
supply using the bypass valve located at the back of the control. To resu e soft water service, open bypass valve by
rotating the knobs counterclockwise.
MAINTENANCE
Adding Salt
Use only high grade water softener salt. Check the salt level onthly. It is i portant to ALWAYS maintain the salt
level above the water level. To add salt, si ply re ove the salt tank lid and add the salt directly into the brine tank.
Be sure the brine well cover is on and fill only to the height of the brine well. The salt tank should never be e pty.
revent Salt Bridging
Hu idity or wrong type of salt ay create a cavity between the water and the salt. This action, known as “bridging”,
prevents the brine solution fro being ade, leading to your water supply being hard. If you suspect salt bridging,
pour so e war water over the salt to break up the bridge. Allow four hours to produce a brine solution, then
anually regenerate the softener. This should always be followed up by allowing the unit to use up any re aining
salt and then thoroughly cleaning out the brine tank.
Care of Your Softener
To retain the attractive appearance of your new water softener, clean occasionally with ild soap solution. Do not
use abrasive cleaners, a onia or solvents.
Cleaning the Injector Assembly
Sedi ent, salt and silt will restrict or clog the injector. A clean water supply and pure salt will prevent this fro
happening. The injector asse bly is located on the right side of the control valve. This asse bly is easy to clean.
Shut off the water supply to your softener and reduce the pressure by opening a cold soft water faucet. Using a
screwdriver, re ove the two screws holding the injector cover to the control valve body. Carefully re ove the
asse bly and disasse ble as shown below. The injector orifice is re oved fro the valve body by carefully turning
it out with a large screwdriver. Re ove the injector throat the sa e way. Carefully flush all parts including the
screen. Use a ild acid such as vinegar to clean the s all holes in the orifice and throat.
Reasse ble using the reverse procedure.

Limited Warranty:
This “T” Series Softener Syste is warranted to the original Consu er purchaser for a period of one (1) year, fro the date of purchase, against defects in
aterials or work anship. The electronic controls and ineral tank are warranted for 5 and 10 years respectively against defects in aterials or work anship.
The co pany's obligation under this warranty shall consist of repair or replace ent, at its option, of any part found by co pany inspection to be defective,
provided that the product has not been isused, abuse, altered or da aged by Consu er with respect to the original installation, as deter ined by the
co pany. This warranty will not apply if water passing through the Syste has a) Turbidity / Suspended Solids > 5 pp ( g/l). b) Hydrogen Sulphide
concentrations greater than 0.05 pp (0.05 g/l). c) Iron concentration greater than 0.3 pp (0.3 g/l) or Manganese greater than 0.05 pp (0.05 g/l), f)
Tannins or colour. This li ited Warranty applies only to a unit when returned to the Warrantor at the owner’s expense and in accordance with shipping
instructions received fro the Warrantor. This warranty does NOT cover, and is intended to exclude, any liability on the part of Envirogard for any incidental
da ages, consequential da ages, labour charges or any other costs incurred in connection with the purchase, installation, use, aintenance or repair of the
syste whether under this warranty or any other warranty i plied by law. So e provinces/states do not allow the exclusion of incidental or consequential
