1.1 Introduction
The Ray101 is a microprocessor-controlled,
portable transceiver that provides reliable simplex
(single frequency) and semi-duplex (two
frequency) communications. This handbook
describesthe physicaland functional
characteristics ofthe radio.
The Ray101provides two-way communications
on all US, Canadian and International marine
channelsand ten weather channels.Referto the
FrequencyTablesinAppendixB,which listall
marine VHF channels available in your radio.
Youshould familiarizeyourselfwiththesetables
asyou are responsiblefor usingthe proper
channels.

(FCC) and Industry Canada requirements that regulate marine VHF radio
usagefortheUSandCanada,respectively.MarineVHFradiousersintheUS
must complywith all applicable FCC rules and regulations,some of which
aredescribedhereand inSection5.

recreational vessels travelling in US waters. Examples of radio equipment
that donotrequirea licenseinclude: marineVHFradios,any typeof
EmergencyPositionIndicating RadioBeacon (EPIRB),any typeof radar,
GPS or LORANreceivers, depth finders, CB radio, or amateur radio (an
amateur licenseis required). However, you mustobtain a license if: (1)you
are required by law ortreaty to carrya radio onyour vessel;(2) your vessel
travelsto foreignports;(3)you usemarine radioequipment onboard your
vesselother thanthedevices listedabove. Shipsthatuse MF/HFsingleside-
band radio, satellite communications, or telegraphy must be licensed by the
FCC.Ifnecessary,youcanobtainaStationLicensebyfilingFCC Form605,
which is available from the FCC website listed above.

OperatorLicense
An Operator License is not required to operate a VHF Marine Radio within
US territorial waters. However, a license is required to operate theradio if
youdock ina foreignport (includingCanadaand Mexico)or leavea foreign
port to dock in a U.S.port. You can request a Restricted Radiotelephone
Operator Permit from the FCC by filingForm 753.
INDUSTRYCANADA
You do not need a license to operate this radio within sovereign waters of
Canada or the US. You will need a license to operate this radio outside of

Chapter2: Installation
2.1 UnpackingandInspection
Use care when unpacking the unit from the shipping carton to prevent
damage to the contents. It is also good practice to save the carton and the
interior packing material in the event you must return the unit to the factory.

2.2 AttachingtheAntenna
Rotate theantennaclockwiseto securely fastenitto the threadedconnector
onthetop ofthe radio.
Note: Do not operatethe radio or press PTT without an antenna attached.

2.3 AttachingtheBeltClip
➤To attach the belt clip and adapter:
1. Remove the belt clip and adapter hardware from thepacking materials.
2. With the adapter button facing away from the Ray101, slide the adapter
into the notch onthe rear of the radiountil it snaps into place.
3. Hold the belt clip perpendicular to the Ray101 and slide the belt clip
notch onto the adapter button until it snaps into place.
4. Rotate the belt clip so that the longer end extends above the top of the
radio.
5. Squeeze together the two top ends of the belt clip and attach to your belt
orpant waist.
➤To remove the radiofrom the beltclip:
1. Rotate the radio perpendicular to the belt clip.
2. Press the release button atthe top of the belt clip.
3. Pull the radioup and away from the beltclip.
2.4 Attaching theWrist Strap
1. Feed the narrow end of the strap through the two mounting holesat the
top ofthe radio behind the antenna.
2. Continuefeeding the narrow endof the strap throughthe loop andpull
tight.
2.5 BatteryUsage
The Ray101 canbe powered bythe supplied six (6) Nickel Metal Hydride
(NiMH) batteries or with six (6) regular AA alkaline cells (not supplied),
using the supplied Battery Tray.

➤To open the Battery Tray and insert the battery cells:
1. Using a coinor flat blade screwdriver, turn the screwat the base of the
unit counterclockwise1/4turn to the UNLOCK position.
2. WhileholdingtheRay101inonehand,usetheotherhandtopushthebat-
tery tray downwardand then away toseparate it from the backof the
radio.

3. Lift upthe tablocated onthecenterright sideof thebatterytray cover
and remove it from the battery tray.
4. Locate the Battery Type switch just below the battery compartment and
turntothe appropriateposition:ALKALINEorNiMH.

5. Noting the proper orientation, install the AA cells in three rows of two
batteries each.
6. Replacethe battery traycover.
WARNING:
BesuretosettheBatteryTypeswitchtotheALKALINEpositionbefore
operatingtheradiowithalkalinebatteries. Operatingtheradiowith
alkalinebatterieswhentheBatteryTypeswitchissettoNiMHcancause
batteryleakageorexplosionresultingindamageor injury.
7. Slidethebatterytrayupintotherearoftheradioandthendownwarduntil
itsnapsintoplace.
8. Turn the screw at the baseof the battery case clockwise tothe LOCK
position.
ChargingRechargeableNiMH Cells
TheNiMHbatteries mustbe fullycharged
before use. To charge the batteries:
1.Insert the radio with the battery tray attached
into the NiMH charger unit.
2.Connect the AC wall adapter into a standard
walloutlet.
or
Connect the Cigarette Lighter Adapter into a
standard12VDC CigaretteLighter.
3.Insert the molded plug into the connectoron
thesideof thebattery charger.
TheCHARGEindicator LEDon thefrontof the
chargerlights when itis receiving voltagefrom
theACadapter.
RED means the batteries are charging.
GREEN means the batteries are fully charged.
Initial charging will complete in approximately 8
hours. Typical time for recharging is 3 to 5hours.
CAUTION:
1.Makesurethe switchjustbelowthe battery
compartmentis settothe NiMHposition.
2.PleasefollowtheBattery Safetyrulesout-
linedatthefrontof thishandbook.

3.1 KeypadandRotaryKnobs
Several of the keys on the front panel of the base station serve multiple
purposes.Forthemostpart,the functionindicatedonthefirstlineof the key
is accessed by pressing and releasing that key. The function indicated on the
second line of the key is accessed by pressing and holding the key for three
seconds.

Use the arrow keys to change thecurrent channel number.
5.Backlight /Keylock
Use this key to toggle ON or OFF the display’s backlight and the keylock
function, which protects the radio fromany keypad entry.
6.16/9
Use this key to switch to the priority channel or to change thevalue of the
SecondaryPriority Channel.
7.DW/TRI
Usethis keytoselecteithertheDual WatchorTriWatchmodes.DualWatch
monitors thecurrent working channeland CH 16 in cycle. Tri Watch
monitorsCH 16,the currentworking channeland thechannel youhave set
as the Secondary Priority Channel in cycle.
8.WX/BAND
Use this key to select the Weather mode or to alternate the frequency band
between theUSA, Internationaland Canadianchannelsets.
9.SCAN/SAVE
Use this key toenter a Scan Mode or toenter a channel into the radio’s
memory.
10.HL/USER
Usethiskeyto togglethetransmitpowerfromHIGHto LOWandto enter
UserChannelMode,whichdisplaysonlythechannelsthatyouhavesavedto
memory.

The following describesthe functional characters onthe Ray101’sLCD.

Indicatesthe PTTis beingdepressed andthe radioistransmitting.
2.(RX)Receiving
Indicatesthattheradioisreceivingaradiosignal.Iftheradioreceivesasignal
butthesquelchthresholdissetsohighthatthesignalcannotbeheard,theRX
indicator is notdisplayed but the bar graph on the left side ofthe LCD is
illuminatedto showthe appropriate signalstrength.
3.(USER)Favorite Channel Mode
Indicates the radio is inUSER Mode. USER Mode displays onlythe
channels that youhave saved to memory, enabling you to easily scan your
favorite channels while bypassing unwanted or seldom-used channels.
