REA VERIFIER
1 Introduction REA PC-SCAN LD 4
The REA PC-Scan LD 4 is a measuring device for quality control of printed bar codes.
It is a verifier with a measuring head that must always be connected with a PC over a network. The
optical measurement of bar codes is performed by the measuring head. The remote control and
analysis software that is included in the delivery runs on the PC for the display and printing of the test
reports.
Unlike in the case of reading a code by means of a scanner, consistent, reproducible
measuring conditions are always required for the verification of a code. This applies to both, the light
source, the lighting angle, lighting directions, the measuring aperture as well as the distance between
the device and test specimen. If these conditions change, variable, non-comparable measurement
results are the outcome.
A measurement result can provide information on quality deficiencies. In actual practice and depending
on the code application and the extent of the quality deficiencies, such deficiencies range from barely
noticeable up to a total failure of readability. What the response to quality deficiencies should be
depends very much on the respective application conditions and the scanner used.
Scanners are usually not suitable for quality checks. Their task is to capture the codes as efficiently as
possible. When you attempt to carry out a quality check with a scanner, you only get information on the
ability of the scanner to read the codes. Different types of scanners show differences in the reading
characteristics.
When it comes to a quality check for printed/inscribed codes, however, the characteristic of the codes
is of interest, not the ability of a scanner to compensate for any deficiencies in the code depiction.
It is mandatory to comply with the instructions on transport and test equipment monitoring. If the REA
PC-Scan LD 4 is shipped without transportation protection, the risk of damage is very high. If the
instructions on test equipment monitoring are not complied with, changed measuring behaviour due to
age, environmental influences or wear remains unnoticed.
REA bar code verifiers analyse the print quality of bar codes in accordance with the international
standard ISO/IEC 15416. The analysis can be supplemented with optional parameters in order to get
more details; or it can be adapted to the respective requirement.
The previous traditional analysis has been replaced by the optional parameters.
It is crucial that this Operating Manual be read before the initial
start-up.
Safety instructions must be complied with.
This Manual must be stored near the device.

Laser class 2 This laser class does not require any further specific protective precautions.
Class-2 laser devices are low-power devices (< 1 mW) that emit visible radiation. Up to a radiation
duration of 0.25 seconds, these lasers are not dangerous. If a class-2 laser beam hits the eye by
chance, protection of the eye is ensured by an aversion response as well as the closing reflex of the
eyelid in less than 0.25 seconds. As an immediate safety requirement, it suffices not to look
consciously into the beam.
Irradiation of the eye through bypassing the natural protective reflex must be avoided, though!
Laser beam outlet opening:
The laser beam outlet opening is located at the bottom of the measuring slide.
Outlet angle on the front downward at 45°.
Reflection of the laser beam
This symbol indicates the direction of possible reflections of the laser beam.

3 Preparations for commissioning
This chapter describes the installation and preparatory work required for the initial use of the REA PC-
Scan LD 4.
3.1 Hardware installation
The REA PC-Scan LD 4 is removed from the packaging and placed on a level table surface. Make sure
that the workplace has only diffused lighting and is not directly exposed to sunlight or spotlight beams.
This way, influences by extraneous light during the measurements are avoided.
The REA PC-Scan LD 4 requires an external voltage supply. The power supply unit included in the
delivery supplies the voltage directly to the REA PC-Scan LD 4 via the network cable. At the same
time, these cables are for data communication through the network to the PC on which the REA
TransWin32 software is being used.
A number of steps are necessary for the hardware installation of the REA PC-Scan LD 4.
First off, the REA PC-Scan LD 4 is removed from the case or cardboard packaging.

The desired pressure plate is selected
In the delivery status, the level pressure plate is installed.
It is designed for the scanning of level printed patterns
(see Fig. 3.1. no.1).
If bar codes are to be checked in a ladder arrangement on
round surfaces, the pressure plate must be replaced.
The hollow body measuring device is intended for this purpose.
The hollow body measuring device is a plastic pressure plate
with a profile for round objects.
(optional accessory –Fig. 3.1.1: no. 2).
The pressure plate is affixed to the bottom side
of the REA PC-Scan LD 4 with 2 Torx 8 screws
(Fig. 3.1.1: no. 4 and Fig. 3.1.3)
With the included key (Fig. 3.1.1: no.3),
the 2 Torx 8 screws on the bottom of the REA PC-Scan LD 4
are loosened.
The tip of the pressure plate is inserted into the opening
(see Fig. 3.1.4).
Fasten the pressure plate again with the two Torx 8 screws.

3.2 Application of the hollow body measuring device.
The hollow body measuring device is an alternative pressure plate that facilitates the measurement of
bar codes on round surfaces.
Measuring with the help of this plate is only possible if the bar codes are printed upright (or in ladder
form on a standing bottle). The profile of the hollow body measuring device allows for a simple fixation
of the test specimens.
The figure shows the view from behind, or inside, when the REA PC-Scan LD 4 is on its back.
For better illustration, only the hollow body measuring device with a standard PET bottle is shown.
The tongue, circled in red in the picture, is an additional support. Especially for small sleeves as of a
length of approx. 15 mm, only this tongue should be used as the application surface. If such small
round bodies are placed either on the left or on the right edge, it is no longer possible to fixate the test
specimen properly.
Caution:
The bar code to be measured must never be inside the area of the tongue circled in red.
With the attached hollow body measuring device, codes on level objects can be measured as well. In
this case, however, the specified measuring accuracy is not achieved.

The cover must not jam on the guide pins on the rear
housing corners.
For this, the cover must be lifted, if possible at a 45° angle,
to the front/top (see Fig. 3.6.3).
The measuring head is slowly pushed to the centre
of the scan area to get a better grip on the measuring head
without coming in contact with the control buttons
(see Fig. 3.6.4).
For this, the TransWin32 software has the feature:
(Configure dialog-->device. “Replace head” function).
The measuring head moves to the centre, and the device
switches off.
The release lever is turned to the
“OPEN” position (see Fig. 3.6.5).
Remove the measuring head carefully straight upwards from
the guide pins (see Fig. 3.6.6).

No dust or dirt is allowed to get onto the
board of the measuring head base (see Fig. 3.6.7).
When inserting the measuring head, it must be ensured
that the guide pins lie in the measuring head
up to the stop. For this, the measuring head
is pushed down and held.
Only then the latching lever is turned downwards to
the “CLOSE” position
(see Fig. 3.6.8 and 3.6.9).
After inserting the measuring head,
the device cover is carefully put back.
The cover is put on at a slight angle. The control buttons
must fit into the holes without jamming.
The guide pins must sit accurately in the
holes in the cover
(see Fig. 3.6.10).
Then the 2 Torx 8 screws on the front side of the REA
PC-Scan LD 4 are tightened again (see Fig. 3.6.1).
