REA VeriCube Operating Manual Version 2.16 –11/2020 Page 7 of 119
1Introduction
The REA VeriCube is a measurement device for the quality control of printed 2D
matrix codes and 1D barcodes. This is a stationary device, which has to be connected
to a PC via an Ethernet network. The application software along with the device
driver and the display of the test reports run on a computer running Microsoft
Windows.
In contrast to a scanner for barcodes and matrix codes, REA VeriCube is an optically
operating measurement device. Measurement devices are subject to a regular
adjustment and calibration (monitoring of testing equipment). Adjustment and
calibration (monitoring of testing equipment) can be performed by the operator and
as long as calibration is successful, there is no need to return the unit to the
manufacturer.
An overview of all Verifier variants and brochures can be found on our website:
https://www.rea-verifier.com

Optional parts are only included if they have been ordered and are listed separately
on the delivery note. License keys are not necessary. In devices that are already in
operation, optional functions can be activated later by means of license keys.
Camera modules
There is a variety of different camera modules available. Depending on the range of
codesizes and module sizes that have to be measured, the appropriate camera
module must be selected. For UV and IR, a camera module set up for this purpose
must be used, because with this lighting option the focus position shifts relative to
that for red and white light.

3Transport, storage and operating conditions
The REA VeriCube can only be transported in the supplied
case or transport packaging.
Transport: The REA VeriCube is delivered in a case or in a cardboard
box with adequate foam padding. This package should be preserved
for possible transportation. The REA VeriCube should only be
transported in its original packaging, especially with parcel services
and similar means. In case, it is shipped without the original
packaging though, it should be packaged with good padding, so that
the device cannot move in the cardboard shipment box.
The glass pane must always be removed for transport and the plastic
pane must then be used as a protection. The glass cover must always be removed
prior to the transportation and then the plastic cover must be used as protection.
After transportation, the device must be warmed up to room temperature because
the optical parts can be fogged by the temperature change.
Storage: The device should always be stored in dry, dust-free rooms and at room
temperature. When not in use, the device should be covered or stored in the
transport packaging to protect it from dust deposits. For storage, remove the glass
pane and insert the plastic pane.
Dust on the optically effective surfaces leads to misalignment of the optical
measuring paths. This leads to incorrect measurement results.
Operation: Humidity, cold, heat and mechanical impacts incurred when the
equipment is dropped, can lead to a situation where the measuring chamber cover as
well as the mechanical and electronic parts can be damaged or destroyed.
If the device still provides measurement results with these damages, there is a high
risk that these results are incorrect or deviate too far from the correct values.
The device is delivered with a plastic cover and a top plate, which protect the
measuring chamber. The plastic cover serves as dust protection during the storage
and transportation of the REA VeriCube. The glass plate serves as a top plate in the
event that the codes to be measured need to be placed on the surface. The glass top
plate must always be removed prior to the transportation and the plastic cover used
as protection.

5REA VeriCube Version
5.1 REA VeriCube Standard
The REA VeriCube, in the standard design, has 13 screws on the upper side. With the
exception of any two screws, all the others can be removed.
The plate is either in blue or silver in color. The screws have Torx T10 heads.
The screws are there to close the threaded holes. The threaded holes are provided
for fastening the used fixtures when, for example, auxiliaries and other measurement

The REA VeriCube UV has an ultraviolet illumination as an alternative to the red light
illumination with 660 nm. For this alternative illumination there are arranged 16 UV-
LEDs with a wavelength of 365 nm in the unit.
This applies to VeriCube devices with UV illumination
Devices can be identified by a warning sign:
Please read this manual completely before you start using the device!
Please pay particular attention to the safety instructions for the REA
VeriCube UV in chapter 4.1General safety + 4.2Additional safety
instructions for REA VeriCube UV
With REA VeriCube UV the irradiation values according to EN 62471:2008 for the skin
directly on the device are exceeded. For longer-term work at the radiation source it is
therefore recommended to wear opaque clothing and gloves. During operation,
please always cover the field of view with the black plate or black cover cloth after
the object has been positioned.
The Level correction when adjusting this type of test instrument differs from the
standard procedure. The greyscale card must be used here instead of the luminance
card. Please refer to the note in chapter Level adjustment procedure for this type of
verifier.
Attention should be paid to the fact, that upon UV illumination, dirt will get visible,
that was invisible with natural light before, like for example thin layers of fat,
fingerprints etc. Extremely precise attention to cleanliness is a prerequisite
for reproducible measurements.
It is recommended to always wear gloves (e.g. Monochrom article no.: 5241L) when
handling the device in order to avoid contamination of the verifier, the calibration /
adjustment cards and the measuring objects.

For the reflectance adjustment the blue component of the UV-LED light is used,
which is within the sensitivity range of the camera. An absolute reference to national
standards is not established in this case, but only a reference to the reflectance
values measured with red light as a reference. This adjustment is used to obtain
repeatable, stable measurement results that refer to a defined standard.
The typical measurement objects are markings with dyes / inks / printing colors that
are invisible or completely transparent in visible light. In UV light, these markings
generate fluorescence in the visible range of the light spectrum. This light, which is
generated by fluorescence is evaluated as if it were a reflected light from the surface.
Due to the adjustment, described above, the UV light source has an always identical
intensity. Thus, the fluorescence is evaluated with stable lighting values. The
evaluation must be in accordance with ISO/IEC TR 29158 (DPM).
Attention:
The focusing plane of the camera module in UV is shifted in relation to
that in red light. If the REA VeriCube UV is to be used for measurements
with red light, it is essential that a suitable camera module is then used
for red light.

5.4 REA VeriCube IR
The REA VeriCube IR has an infrared illumination as an alternative to the red light
illumination with 660 nm.
REA has two different versions for infrared lighting in its portfolio.
The REA VeriCube IR can be purchased as a variant with 855 nm or with 945 nm.
With these types of device, IR is always the alternative lighting to red light. For this
alternative lighting, the device contains 16 IR LEDs with a wavelength of 855 nm or
945 nm.
Handling, adjustment and calibration are the same with the REA VeriCube IR as with
the standard device. However, it should be noted that due to unavoidable reflections
through the glass pane, a warning appears during Level correction: "Level correction
finished with a warning. Warning: the calibration card seems dirty. Please clean it.
However, on this occasion the adjustment result has been accepted. [0x20081285].“
This warning can be noted in this case, but work can still continue normally.
The reflections can only be prevented if both the adjustment and the measurements
afterwards are performed without the glass pane. This is also permitted. However, it
must be taken into account that the mirror in the device and the camera lens will
then become contaminated by dust more quickly and therefore have to be cleaned
regularly. As long as the device is not in operation it should be protected against
dust.
Attention:
The focusing plane of the camera module with IR lighting is shifted in
relation to that in red light. If the REA VeriCube IR is to be used for
measurements with red light, it is essential that a suitable camera module
is then used for red light.
6Commissioning
6.1 Power supply
The power for the VeriCube is supplied via a network cable connected to the device.
This type of power supply is designated as Power over Ethernet (PoE) (power supply
over a network cable). The delivered power supply unit provides power to a
connected device only when the device is designed for a power over Ethernet supply.
It is not recommended to connect a non PoE-enabled power supply device to the OUT
connection of the power supply unit. A second cable or additional separate power
supply unit is not necessary. The delivered network cables are, apart from the
increased flexibility, standard off-the-shelf network cables.
