4Rack Installation Guide
Rack Installation Guide Overview
Important: Model 50, 100, 200, 250, 300, and 550 systems are designed for the desktop. If you install these systems in a
rack do not place objects on top of the system; it causes restricted airflow and can damage the system.
Note: For rack installation instructions describing 520, 1020, 1520, and 2020 systems, see the documentation enclosed
with these products. The documentation enclosed with 1U xx20 systems describes how to standard or center mount to
a two-post rack or standard mount to a four-post rack.
Note: 1U xx10 systems are equipped with pre-installed rails, use standard installation procedures to install these
systems in a rack.
Overview
Depending on your order, some systems require that the inner rails be attached to the chassis before they
can be installed in a rack.
Square Post-Hole Adaptor
Rack cabinets can have square or circular holes in the vertical posts. If necessary, to accommodate standard
screws you can convert the square post-holes to circular holes using the included square post-hole adaptors.
To convert a square post-hole to fit a standard screw
Press together the top and bottom of the square post-hole adaptor and push it into the square hole on
the rack post.
Figure 1. Installing Square Post-Hole Adaptor
Short Rack Adaptors
Your system ships with standard brackets for racks with a depth of 28 to 33 inches (71.1 to 83.8 cm). Short
rack adaptors are provided to accommodate racks with a shorter rack depth. The short rack adaptors fit
racks with a depth of 17 to 28 inches (43.2 to 71.1 cm).
For details on installing short rack adaptors, see “To mount the short rack adaptors to the outer rails” on
page 24.

Rack Installation Guide 5
Rack Installation Guidelines Rack Installation Guide
Rack Installation Guidelines
Prior to installing the system in a rack, adhere to the following rack installation guidelines:
Installing components in a rack without the front and side stabilizers can cause the rack to tip over.
Always install rack stabilizers before you install components in a rack.
Make sure the rack is properly secured to the floor or ceiling.
Always load the rack from the bottom up. Load the heaviest component in the rack first.
Ensure that there is adequate airflow in the rack. Improper installation or restricted airflow can
damage the equipment.
The rack cannot have solid or restricted airflow doors. You must use a mesh door on the front and back
of the rack or remove the doors to ensure adequate airflow to the system.
The 1U and 3U systems produce front-to-back cooling airflow that requires an unobstructed airflow to
the fan housing. Do not mount the system near other electronic devices that produce back-to-front
airflow.
The Series 250 and 550 require sideways airflow. Do not block the sides.
The Models 50, 100, 200 and 300 require air-convection cooling. If these models are installed in a rack,
use the Riverbed provided rack-mount.
The rack width and depth must allow for proper serviceability and cable management.
Make sure the rack is level and stable before pulling a component out of the rack.
Do not move racks by yourself; a minimum of two people are needed to move a rack.
Required Tools and Equipment
You need the following tools and equipment to mount the system to a rack:
A standard Telco-type rack
A standard Phillips-head screwdriver
The enclosed screw-kit
The enclosed short rack adaptors (if needed)
The enclosed square post-hole converters (if needed)
The enclosed brackets for mounting the Series 250 and 550 (if needed)
If your system is missing any components please contact Riverbed Support for replacement parts at https:/
/support.riverbed.com.
Mounting Series 250 and 550 to a Rack
The following section describes how to install a Series 250 or 550 system in a rack.

6Rack Installation Guide
Rack Installation Guide Mounting Series 1050 and 2050 to a Rack
Important: Series 250 and 550 systems are designed for side to side airflow. If you install these systems in a rack do not
place objects on the sides of the system; it causes restricted airflow and can damage the system.
To install mounting brackets to the system
1. Carefully lift the system out of the shipping carton.
2. To install the mounting brackets, use the included screw kit to secure the brackets onto the sides of the
chassis (at the front of the system) using three screws on each side.
Figure 2. Installing Brackets to the Desktop System
3. To mount the brackets to the posts, slide the system into the rack until the front is flush against the rack
posts. Install the included washer and screw in the center hole of the bracket. The Series 250 and 550
must be installed in a front mount.
4. Insert and tighten the rack post screws on each side of the system.

Caution: All 3U systems must be mounted to a four-post rack; they cannot be mounted to a two-post rack.
Caution: 3U systems weigh from 59-71 lbs. (26-33 kg). A minimum of two people is required to move a 3U system. Lift
the system using both hands and with your knees bent.
Note: The outer rails are not required to install the system in a shelving unit. Remove the outer rails before attempting
to install the Series 5050, 6050, 7050, and 9350 in a shelving unit.
Unplug the AC power cords.
Remove all external devices and connectors.
Important: If your rack has square holes, use the included square-hole post adaptors. For details, see “Square Post-Hole
Adaptor” on page 4.
To detach the outer rails from the inner rails
1. To detach the outer rails, slide the outer rail to the end of the system, pull the outer rail release tab
