1 General Information
The base station system ND 951 is a receiver / transmitter system of the trunked radio system
ACCESSNET
®. It transmits information between the functional units and the users of the trunked
radio system via an air interface.
1.1 Scope of Delivery
Normally the base station system ND 951 is delivered as a completely assembled cabinet. To
reduce the transport weight, bigger parts might be removed and packed separately. The cabinet
that is installed on the site contains the complete basic equipment for a 4-channel system and an
MMX compact system.
1.1.1 4-Channel Fitting-Out
The system ND 951 consists of 4 transceivers XD 951, a TX band pass filter, an RX band pass
filter, a TX-combiner, a receiver multicoupler, a frequency reference, power supply units, and a
control unit CCU.
1.2 Requirements
1.2.1 Security Regulations
General notes on security and accident prevention can be found in the accident prevention
regulations "Allgemeine Vorschriften“ (VBG 1)1. Works on electrical systems have to be carried out
in accordance with the accident prevention regulations "Elektrische Anlagen“ (VBG 4). If the device is
used outside the Federal Republic of Germany, the respective national regulations have to be complied
with.
Attention!
Work on this electrical system must only be carried out by trained staff.
For work with low voltage systems the "EG-regulation 73/23/EWG“ has to be taken into consideration. If
there are special regulations for operating a certain device, it is the responsibility of the user to pay
attention to them. Changes or amendments to the device have to meet the national and international
regulations as well as the general acknowledged technical rules.
During operation, it has to be ensured that no inadmissible electromagnetic forces and electrostatic
fields emerge.
When the installation is completed, all security systems must be checked immediately.

Attention!
All supply lines have to be laid or installed so that
• they don’t obstruct the operation of the device,
• the user will not trip over them,
• the minimum distances are taken into consideration.
1.2.2 Local Requirements
For trouble-free operation of the system a closed dry room is required. The room temperature has
to range between -20 and +50 degrees centigrade. The electrical mains supply must be 220V/ 50Hz
AC or 48-72V DC. Regardless of the protective grounding of the electricity mains supply a general
separate grounding for the device has to be made.
1.3 Function Profile
The receiver/transmitter system ND 951 is used for the transmission of information via an air
interface which connects up the users of the trunked radio system, the functional units of the
trunked radio system and its users.
To provide these functions, the ND 951 has the following basic functions:
• Connection for 4-wire lines for the internal coupling to the exchange
• Receiver/transmitter modules
• Self-test facilities
• Antenna connection modules for receivers and transmitters
1.4 Aids / Measuring Instruments
For activating the ND 951 the following measuring instruments and aids should be available:
• Multimeter (commercially available)
• HF-measuring console (CMS, FMP-3)
• Power meter (NAS)
• PC or laptop with terminal program and serial cable
• Tools
1.5 Lines / Connections
The following lines/connections have to be available:
• Grounding
Separate groundings with a cross-section of at least 16 mm² have to be laid out for the system.
• Power Supply
Connections to the electricity mains supply of AC 220V50Hz or DC 48-72 V.
• Antenna connections
50-Ohm-technology antenna connections are required.

2 Commissioning
2.1 Configuration
For the commissioning of the ND951 no further configurations than the ones described in [Chapter
2.3 Installation and 2.4 Booting] are required. If the ND 951 is commissioned at an MMX via the
internal 4-wire lines, the following has to be taken into consideration:
Certain adjustments in the system configuration have to be carried out for the LIA-ports. These
contain the radio channel number for connecting the transmitter, adjustments for the choice of the
control channel, and for the fall back mode. The system configuration is described in:

Each configuration refers to one slot. When connecting receiver/transmitter the radio channel
number, which is to be adjusted at the receiver/transmitter, is linked with the slot at the LIA to which
it is connected.
2.2 Hardware Adjustments (Jumper)
The ND 951 has a wide range of control software, so that it is not necessary to adjust the jumpers
during the installation and commissioning. Exceptions are the mains power supplies PS914DC and
PS928DC that are switch-selectable from either 48V (48-55V) or 60V (56-72V). The switch is
located within the protective cap of the main power supply. It is marked on the main circuit board.
2.3 Installation
2.3.1 Location
Whereever the transmitter modules are located there must be adequate ventilation. Despite its
compact type of construction, installing the system in a closed cabinet without ventilation is not
recommended.
2.3.2 Grounding
The cabinet has to be grounded. The easiest way to do this is linking the ground connection to the
frame.
Attention!
The protective ground conductor of the power supply is not sufficient
protection against overvoltage that can occur, eg. during thunderstorms.

2.3.3 220 V Main Connection
The cabinet is connected to 220V by taking the power cable2through the square opening at the
rear of the top panel to the connection box at the front. For this, the protection grids at the top panel
and the front panel have to be removed. Then the clips L1, N1, and SL (protective ground
conductor) are connected. The system works with a single-phase supply and should be protected by
at least 10A.
2.3.4 60 V or 48 V DC Connection
The cabinet is connected to the DC power supply by taking the cable through the square opening at
the rear of the top panel to the connection box at the front. For this, the protection grids at the top
and the front panel have to be removed. When connecting to the electricity mains ensure that the
correct polarity has been chosen. Before the device is switched on, the voltage must be measured.
Attention!
The mains power supplies PS914DC/928DC have to be switched over to the correct
power supply voltage.
Switching over the mains power supplies
The mains power supplies are disconnected from the sub-rack. At the top of the left panel under the
protection grid is a slide switch marked with 48V/60V. This switch can be moved into the correct
position, eg. with a screw driver. When it is adjusted, the mains power supply must be marked with
the respective voltage.
Moreover, the power connection can be made to the customers’ individual requirements, eg. by
means of a XLR-plug.
2.3.5 4-wire Connection
The 4-wire connection is linked to the MMX within the system itself and requires no alterations.
2.3.6 Antenna Connections
The cabinet has its own antenna connections, RX (Type N female) and TX (Type 7/16 inch female).
2.3.7 Connecting the House Alarm System and external Alarms
House alarm and external alarms are connected to the connection box of the cabinet. From there
they are connected to the CCU, which distributes them to all transceivers. For each alarm input
there are 2 connections. One of them carries the potential (+5V DC) and the other one the
corresponding grounding (GND). The alarm is activated by short-circuiting. It can take up to a
minute until the activated alarm reaches all channel units.

2.4 Booting
Before the device is switched on, the 4-wire short-circuit plugs on the front panel of the installed
transceivers are disconnected, to prevent the MSC/TSC having access to the transceivers while the
adjustments are being carried out. When additional transceivers are installed in a cabinet which is in
service, the 4-wire short-circuit plugs have to be taken off. The system is commissioned by
switching on all mains power supplies. On connection to the power supply all interfaces are reset.
The receiver/transmitter modules and line interfaces go into the operating mode and wait for control
commands from the MMX via 4-wire lines.
Adjusting the CCU
For new installations or changes within a base station, the existing adjustments have to be
readjusted or corrected. For this the PC has to be connected to the V.24-interface of the CCU with a
serial cable. The dialogue with the CCU is carried out by means of a terminal program. The
adjustments are 19200 Baud, N, 8, 1.
If the CCU was barred with the command A900, the base stations can be accessed with the
command A900+. The transceiver addresses are called up with the command Ax (x refers to the
slot).
Further basic Adjustments after the Booting
Further basic adjustments that have to be carried out via the CCU-interface after the first booting of
the ND 951, are described below.
2.4.1 TR-Cassette Configuration
The commands F21-F28 control whether the adjustments concur with the respective transceiver
boards / positions. If, for example, transceivers are mounted in cabinet 1 in the positions 1, 2, and 4,
but none in the other positions, the following command is entered:

The adjustment is only important for the batch command of the CCU.
2.4.2 TX- Antenna Alarm Number
The adjustment of the TX antenna number of the used cassette is controlled and changed with the
commands F41-F48. These are:

For the compact system ND 951 only the adjustment F41/1 is used.

2.4.3 RX Multicoupler Alarm Number
The adjustments for the receiver multicoupler alarm for the used cassette are set with the
commands F51-F58. These are:

2.4.4 TX-Antenna VSWR Alarm, Level 1
The TX antenna alarm level 1 for the 4 TX-antennas is adjusted and changed with the commands
F71-F74. The alarm level in relation to the VSWR is eg. set = 1:1,5:

The TX antenna alarm level 2 for the 4 TX-antennas is adjusted and changed with the commands

2.4.6 Password
If the CCU is controlled by a modem, a password with the command F91 has to be entered. If the
password is eg. "Deister", this command has to be entered:

2.4.7 Adjusting the Transceiver
If all transceivers that are connected to the CCU are to be adjusted at the same time, the batch
command of the CCU can be used. The following is put at the beginning of all commands:

If all transceivers that are fitted in a cabinet are to be adjusted at the same time, the batch
command can be used together with the cabinet number:
B1/ ... B2/ .... etc.
If the transceivers of a cabinet are not to be transmitted at the same time, the adjustments are
carried out separately for each transceiver.
2.4.8 Local Block (Separating the Transceivers from the trunked Radio
System)
Before adjusting the transceiver it has to be separated from the trunked radio system.

If only one reference frequency is installed, and the block alarm is to be triggered off in case
inaccuracies occur, the following has to be entered:

2.4.13 Alarm Level from the TX Combiner Test Point
The alarm level should be adjusted slightly higher than the measured value of command 12, if all
transmitter combiners are tuned, and all transmitters are switched on.

2.4.16 Storing of Channels
The channels of each transceiver are stored with the following command:

For this, mm is the CCU address of the transceiver and nnnn is the transceiver channel number.
This is repeated for all transceivers.
2.4.17 Tuning the Transmitter Combiner
The combiner filter is now aligned with the dialled channel. First the CCU-address of the transceiver
is dialled. Then the transmitter is switched on and the continuous display of the TX combiner
alignment is activated.

The display of the combiner alignment is now aligned with the minimum value. Finally the
transmitter is switched off.

This procedure is repeated for all channels. When all channels are aligned, it is recommended to
repeat the whole alignment for all channels. It is not necessary to switch off all transmitters while
this is done. To simplify the procedure and to make it more precise, it is useful, however, to only
load the channel which is being measured with the HF of the corresponding transmitter. A DC-
multimeter can be connected directly to the combiner test point.
2.4.18 Channel Self-Test
The installation is ready for a self-test. It is started on all channels by a software reset:

2.4.19 Final Commissioning of the System
All 4-wire short-circuit plugs of the transceivers are connected to the two top rows of the plug-in
connection on the front panels.
Finally a local deblock is activated with the command:

Now the MMX can commission the base stations.
After the commissioning by the MMX all red LED should be off. Normal trunked radio traffic should
be possible.
2.5 Messages to the Network Management
When the channels have been commissioned successfully, the message "00C6:
CHanRT_IF_activated" of the respective LIA-ports with the address of the corresponding LIA-port is
sent to the network management.
3 Problem Solving
If the LIA-port that belongs to a channel can’t be commissioned by the system successfully, this can
be recognized by the status of the LED of the LIA-port, the status of the transceiver, or the absence
of the activation message to the network management. In this case it is necessary to have a look at
the messages that have come in at the OMC/NEOS addressed to the port. In most cases the
reason for the cancellation of an activation is indicated by a special message. Eg.:
0006 ChanRt_NotAdjusted Adjustments can’t be made (eg. because the line
level can’t be balanced).
0008 ChanRt_Wrong_Type Configuration and type of port do not correspond.
0015 ChanRt_Dev_Squelch The squelch baring is permanently open (interfering carrier
is received).
00D0 ChanRt_Runtime Error message sent to the main processor by the LIA.
