Measurement PC
In connection with the ARGUS or ARGUS-UMS software, this term
designates the PC or notebook provided in a measurement station. In
connection with the UMS100/120, it designates the UMS100/120 unit
itself.
Measurement station A station that detects and measures electromagnetic fields
(like the UMS100/120), and contains all components necessary for this.
Monitoring system A system that detects and measures electromagnetic fields.
Service PC
A PC or notebook used for configuring a UMS100/120 by means of a
service tool on site or from a central station. ARGUS or ARGUS-UMS
software may additionally be installed on this PC for service purposes.
Control PC
A PC or notebook at the central station, on which ARGUS or ARGUS-
UMS software is installed. The PC or notebook can establish a connection
to one or several measurement stations (not to several stations
simultaneously!) in order to assign measurement tasks and fetch results.
Notebook/PC
Depending on the context, this may be a service PC for configuring a
UMS100/120 by means of a service tool, a PC for testing the connection
to a UMS100/120 via the ARGUS or ARGUS-UMS software, or a control
PC at the central station.
Central station Place where one or several control PCs and, possibly, also service PCs
are located.

1 Characteristics
This chapter gives an overview of typical applications and describes the design and functional
principle of a UMS100/120. It also lists the equipment supplied with the UMS100 and UMS120.

1.1 Applications
The UMS100/120 monitoring system is the ideal solution for the effective and budget-priced
monitoring of electromagnetic emissions. The system is of compact design and can easily be installed
and put into operation. The UMS100 and UMS120 systems have identical basic functionality.
Used in conjunction with the ARGUS or ARGUS-UMS control, measurement and analysis software,
the UMS100/120 becomes a highly versatile and flexible monitoring system capable of handling a
wide variety of tasks.
Typical applications:
•Radiomonitoring of large areas with an appropriate number of UMS stations (e.g. national borders,
coastlines, harbors, military training areas, large industrial areas, etc.)
•Detection of new (illegal) signals that may impair sensitive communications and radiolocation
systems (e.g. around airports)
•Monitoring of licensed transmitter systems for compliance with operating parameters (even in the
immediate vicinity of transmitters)
•Monitoring of rooms and buildings to detect the use of illegal transmitters (e.g. airports, hospitals)
•Mobile search for new signals and monitoring of existing signals with the UMS integrated in vehicles

1.2 Design and Functional Principle
1.2.1 Design of the UMS
The UMS100/120 essentially consists of the monitoring unit, which is accommodated in a closed box.
The UMS100 comes as standard with a preassembled, external protective cabinet. For the UMS120,
this cabinet is available as an option. The cabinet provides additional protection against environmental
effects, such as direct sunlight or adverse weather conditions, and against mechanical impact.
Otherwise, the UMS100 and UMS120 systems mainly differ with respect to the product equipment and
accessories supplied with the units (see section 1.4 from page 1.6), and the larger variety of antennas
that can be connected to the UMS120. Whereas the UMS100 comes with all components necessary
for system installation and operation (protective cabinet, center mast and tripod, connecting cables
and antenna), the UMS120 comes as the monitoring unit alone accommodated in the inner box. All
components supplied with the UMS100 can also be ordered for the UMS120 as options or
accessories. While offering the same functionality as the UMS100, the UMS120 can thus be
configured to provide higher versatility.

A lockable door on the front of the box provides access to the fuses, the PRESET key and the SIM
card slot for the GSM module (standard with UMS100, optional with UMS120).
The sockets for connecting external components are provided on the bottom. These include sockets
for two receiving antennas, one communications antenna, an Ethernet LAN, DC and AC power supply
input, protective ground and DC output. The DC output socket allows the connection of an optional DC
feed (R&S®UMS12-H6) for the supply of active antennas (UMS120 only).

1.2.2 Functional Principle of the UMS
The main components of the UMS100G / UMS120 monitoring unit are the receiving section (RF
frontend) with a signal preprocessing unit and a processor module with an embedded operating
system. The RF frontend, which is provided with two antenna inputs, processes the received signals,
demodulates them if necessary, and routes them on to the processor module.
The processor module is equipped with the required interfaces and a microprocessor. The firmware
that runs on the microprocessor allows the UMS100/120 to be remote-controlled from an external PC
on which ARGUS software must be installed. The ARGUS-UMS software has been specially adapted
to match the functionality and applications of the UMS100/120 monitoring system. The ARGUS
software also provides full functionality to control UMS100/120 units in conjunction with other Rohde &
Schwarz measurement stations.
A data link to the UMS100/120 can be established via the integrated Ethernet LAN interface or via a
wireless communications interface. The UMS100 is equipped with a GSM900/1800 module as
standard. For the UMS120, wireless communications modules for different standards (GSM, CDMA)
are optionally available ex factory.
The UMS100/120 features a universal power supply concept that allows the system to operate on AC
(100 V AC to 240 V AC, 50 Hz to 60 Hz) as well as DC supply voltages (10 V DC to 30 V DC). AC and
DC power supply can be connected simultaneously, enabling uninterrupted system operation in the
event of a failure of the primary supply.
Special emphasis was placed on minimum power consumption. For ambient temperatures above
0 °C, power consumption is as low as approx. 25 W. Additional power is needed only at very low
temperatures for heating the system.
