About this manual
You should first read the chapter "Before you start playing" (p. 15) of the owner's manual. It explains how to connect
the AC adaptor or install batteries and turn on the power. This O wner's Manual explains everything, from the FR - 3x's
basic operations to more advanced functions.

In order to explain the operations as clearl y as possible, this manual uses the following conventions:
• Text enclosed in square brackets [] indicates the name of a button or knob. Example : the l USER PROGRAM] button.

Stand-alone electronic instrument
Tho u gh the FR-3x is a fully electron ic instrument, you
do not nee d to connec t it to an amp lifier in order to
prod u ce so u nds . It s onboard amp l if i cat i on system is
powerful eno u gh for small ven u es , restauran t s, etc .

he FR-3x can also be powered using 10 commercially
available rechargeable Ni-MH ba tt eries , so t ha t yo u
don 't need to connec t it to a wall ou tle t.
PBM (Physical Behavior Modeling)
T he FR -3x V-Accordion is based on Roland's so und gen-
era t ion technology c alle d "P BM " (P hysical Behavior
Mode l ing) whose sonic res ult is very close to th e so und
of t
rad itional accordions.
Super realistic accordion simulations
All sounds the FR-3x pro du ces were obtained by sam-
pling popular traditional aco ustic accor d ions.
This V-Accordion allows you to switch from an Italian
ja zz accordion to German folk, French mu sette or a his-
toric
bandoneon sound - wi thout changing yo ur tech-
ni
que .
Different tu
ning syste ms are also available.

traditional accordion

lows articulation, and unique keyboard modes (Solo ,

The FR-3x allows you to play amazing organ so u nds in
almost t he same way as an organ player using t he tre-
ble section. You can add a rotary effect (slow/fast)
Drum sounds
You can also u se the FR -3x to play simple drum parts
with your left hand (bass and chord sections) .
SOllnd expansion
The FR -3x pro v ides two internalmemories that allow
you to add new sounds.
Sophisticated bellows response
Faster response an d higher sensi tivity and precision
pl us detection of bellows opening/closing with new
bellows pressure sensing circuitry.

bellows resistance regulator knob allows you to
adjust the bello w s' inertia to your preference.
USB-based audio player
T he FR-3x con t ains an au dio player function that a ll ows
yo u to play back mp3 and WAV f il es directly from a
connec ted USB me mory.
Save your settings to a USB memory
Yo u can save yo ur se ttings by connecting an optional

The FR-3 x allows you to control ext e rnal MIDI-compat-
ible instruments. The Treble k eyboard and chord/bass
buttons are velocity-sensitive, while the bellows con -

other MIDI keyboar d, MI DI wind instrument, etc., you
may know.

&WARNING
• Do not force the FR-3 x 's po wer -supply cord to share an
outlet with an unreasonable number of other devices. Be
especially careful when using extension cords-the total
po wer used by all devices you have connected to the extens ion
cord's outlet must never exceed the power rating (wattslam peres)
for the extens i on cord. Excessive loads can cause the insu lation on
the cord to heat up and eventually melt through.
• Before using the FR-3x in a fore ign country, consu lt wi th
your retai l er, the nea rest Ro l and Service Center, or an
authorized Ro l and distributor, as listed on the "Informa-
tion" page.
• Batteries must never be recharged, heated, taken apart,
or thrown in to fire or water.
• Never ex pose batteries to excessive hea t such as sun-
shine, fire or the like.
&CAUTION
• The unit and the AC adaptor should be located so its
location or position does not interfere with their proper
ventilati on.
• Always grasp on ly the plug on the AC adaptor cord when O
plugging into, or unplugging from, an outlet or this unit.
• At regu l ar in terva l s, you shou ld unp l ug the AC adaptor
and dean it by using a dry cloth to wipe all dust and
other accumu lations away from its prongs. A ls o, discon- O
nect the power plug from the power outl et wheneve r the unit is to
remain unused for an extended period of time. Any accumu lation
of dust
between the power plug and the power outlet can result in
poor insulation and le ad to fire.
• Try to prevent cords and cab l es from becoming entan- !.\!
gled. Also, a ll cords and cables Sllou ld be placed so they LD
are out of the reach of ch ildr en.
• Never climb on top of, or place heavy objects on the unit.
• Never handle the AC adaptor or its plugs with wet hands
when plugging into, or unplugging from, an outl et or this
unit.
• Befare moving the unit, disconnect the AC adaptor and
all cords cOln in g from externa l dev ic es.

• Whenever you suspect the possibility of lightning in your O
area, disconnect the AC adaptor from the outlet.

Power supply
o Do not connect this unit to ' same electrical ou llet that is being

which the el ectrical a ppliance is used, powe r supply noise may

Maintenance
o For everyday cl eaning wipe the FR-3x with a soft, dry cloth or one
that has been slightly dampened with water. To remove stubborn
dirt,
use a mild, non - abrasive detergent. Afterwards, be sure to
wipe the instrument thoroughly with a soft, dry cloth.
o Never use benzine, thinner, al cohol or solvents of any kind, to
avo id the possibility of discoloration and/or deformation.
Repairs and data
o Please be aware that a ll data contained in the unit's memory may
be lost when the unit is sent for repairs. Important data should
al ways be backed up on a USB memory or wr itten down on paper
(w hen possible). During repairs, due ca re is taken to avoid the l oss
of data . H oweve r, in certain cases (such as when circu itry related
to memory itself isout of order), we regret that it may not be pos -

Let us first take a look at how the FR-3x is organized and how it is operated.
The sections of your FR - 3x
L et's brie fly look at the various "sections" of your
instrument, as that will help you understand how your
V-Accordion works.

• Treble section (right-hand manua l)
T his section is normally u sed for playing the melody.
The F R-3x's treble section is velocity sensi t ive .
• Bass and chord se ction
This section is normally use d to play the accompani-
ment. T here are two general categories: one is called
"StradelIa", and the other "Free Bass ". The FR-3x
allows you to use either type .
The "StradelIa" system, also called t he "standard bass
system" uses the first 2 (or 3) button rows to play
bass notes. T he remaining button rows are used to
play chords.
If you select the "Free Bass" system , all but tons are
u sed to play single bass notes.
The FR-3x's ba ~ s and chord section is velocity sensi-
tive.
• Bellows
The bellows is an important part of the accordion.
The movement of the bellows indeed lends expres-
sion and dynamics to the sound. Severai techniques
are available, one of which is called "bellows shake"
(rapid opening and ciosing movelllent s).
The bellows ' inertia can be set with the resistance
regulator and air button.

Installing and removing batteries
Your FR -3x has a compartment that contains aspecial
holder unit
in to which y ou can install 70 rechargeable
AA - type Ni-MH batteries (not supplied). You can there-
fore play your instrument without connecting the sup-
plied
adapter.
1. Switch off the FR -3x.
2. Remove the cushion located between the
treble keyboard and the bellows.
3. Remove the cover from the FR-3x's battery
compartment
by pressing the two tabs and
lifting the cover.

4. Use the tab to pull the battery case out of
the compartment and turn the case around.

7. Close the FR-3x's battery compartment and
re -install the cushion.

specify how lang the FR-3x sho u ld wait befare pow-
ering off automatically. See "Auto Power Off" on
p.55.

Connecting the FR - 3x to an
amplifier, mixer, etc .
The FR -3x is equipped with an internalspeaker system
and thus does not need to be connected to an amplifier
at all. T here may be times , however when using an
externa l amplification system is more convenient.

Important remark
After connecting
any cable to the FR-3x, be sure to
never place it on the side when not using it.
• Always s tand the V-Accordion on its rubber feet (and in
the corresponding clirection) to avoid dall1aging the
plugs.
• Always handle and 111 ove the FR -3x with care and pay
special attention to the cable slack to avoid dall1aging
or bending the cables.
• If yo u place the FR-3x on yo ur lap, ensure that the
audio and adapter cables run between yo ur legs (not
sideways) to avoid dalllaging or bending the cables.

Attaching the straps
Proceed as follows to attach the straps to your FR-3x:
1. Unpack the straps.
The FR-3x cOllles with twa straps, each wi th twa
ends: the Llpper end is fitted with a velcro strip and
the clip, the lower end is not. See the illustration
below :
2. Put the FR-3x on a stable surface as shown
in the illustration below.
3. Slide the upper end (with the velcro stri p) of
one strap through the left holder
ring (see
the illustration).
4. Attach the strap's upper part to the velcro
layer below
it.

5. Close the securitv clip to ensure that the
strap cannot come loose.
6. Repeat steps 3~5 for the other strap.

7. Slide the lower end of ane strap through the
right holder ring
as shown.
8. Slide the strap end through the upper evelet
of its plastic buckle (see the illustration).

9. Turn the strap end around and insert it into
the lower evelet. then
pull it tight.

10. Slide the plastic clip over the loose and lang
lower strap ends to secure the strap.
11. Repeat steps 7~9 for the other lower strap
end.

st rip t ha t allows yo u to adj ust its slack .

Before you start playing
Securing the adapter and/or MIDI
cable
Proceed as follows to ensure that the adapter cable -or
a MIDI cable- doesn't come loose while YOLI are play-
ing.
1. Unclip the indicated part of the cushion at
the back of the FR-3x.
T he cu shion is attached with severai clips. You only
nee d to un c lip the part show n in the illustrati on
below.
Note t he guide nex t to th e righ t clip closest to the
cOl1nec t ion panel.
2. Connect the small plug of the AC adaptor
cable to the FR-3x's DC IN socket and wind
the cable around the guide:
You can also connect the MIDI cable to the M IDI OUT!
IN socket and w ind it aro u nd the gui de like the
adapter cable.

3. Reinstall the cushion, taking care to secure
the
adapter cable and/or MIDI cable vou
have
just installed.
When finished, t he FR -3x sho uld look as fo ll ows :
4. Reverse these steps to remove and discon-
nect the adapter when vou want to stop
plaving.
