.Hu m Canceling
Th e SN- 550's hum canceling unit is an updated version of a unit
u
se d in previo us Roland pr oducts. T his updaled unit is even more
e
ff ec tive for rcmo vi ng hum a nd ha s less imp ac i on th e r es ulting
with
sou nd qu a lit y.
Hum is a low fr equency noise consisting of s ever al h an nonically
rela
ted fr e qu cnci es and re sults fr om the interacti on of so me
electronic
de vice an d th e po wer supply. Hum c on sists of t he
ha nn onics related to th e fr e qu ency of th e power s up r l} ( us ua lly
50 or 60 Hz ). Ordi nary hum ca ncele r.; l- em Ol- C th ese ha nll oni c>
by u se of a "co mb filt er". Hum noise ca n be reduced by using a
comb fil le r, but it may alter or elimin ate ponl ons of t he audio
signal in
th e sa me frequ en cy ra ng e.
To minimi ze such probl ems, th e SN- 550 us es a suppre or th at
wo rks only on th e freq u~ n cy that has th e same harmonics as the
hum. The l
ow er th e input signal is bel ow the th reshold \e vel, t he
g re at er the hum canceling effect.

When this switch is tumed o n, the inpul signal wi ll be output

pa -sing through the intemal circuits. The Bypass Switch
can
be switched on or off even while the unit is tumed off. ( In
this C>l S t. th e Byr ss Indicator will not light. )
* When the Bypass Switch is switched on, the noise and
hum canceling functicns will be turned on, but this will not
aHect the output signal.
* When the input and output signal is unbalanced, the output
level will depend on whether the Bypass Switch
is on or
oH. This, however, is normal on this unit.

(2) Feed the audio signal into the SN-550. Set the Internal
Level Control Knob so that the Internal Level Meter
reads betw
ee n _. 18 and OdB; the CLIP indicator
should not light. When using a stereo signal. set both
the
channels to the same position.

When the CLIP indicator is lit. the signal is not being
processed properly.
@Set each channel of the hum and noise cancelers
depending on the conditions:

change the internal level after having set the noise
and
hum cancelers. set each thr es hold level again.
