WARNING!
When using electric gardening appliances, basic safety
precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk
of fire, electric shock and personal injury.
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS
For safe operation, read and understand all instructions
before using this product. Follow all safety instructions.
Failure to follow all safety instructions listed below, can
result in serious personal injury.
Know your tiller. Read operator’s manual carefully. Learn
its applications and limitations, as well as the specific
potential hazards related to this tiller. Know how to stop
the unit and disengage the controls quickly. Following this
rule will reduce the risk of electric shock, fire, or serious
injury.
Do not allow children or untrained individuals to use this
unit.
Powered walk-behind tiller work is strenuous. You must
be in good physical condition and mentally alert. If you
have any condition that might be aggravated by strenuous
work, check with your doctor before operating a powered
walk-behind tiller.
Always wear eye protection with side shields marked to
comply with ANSI Z87.1. Following this rule will reduce
the risk of serious personal injury.
Use Safety Glasses – Wear a face or dust mask if the
operation is dusty. Always wear safety glasses with side
shields. Everyday glasses have only impact resistant
lenses. They are NOT safety glasses. Following this rule
will reduce the risk of eye injury.
Protect your lungs. Wear a face or dust mask if the op-
eration is dusty. Following this rule will reduce the risk of
serious personal injury.
Dress Properly – Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry.
They can be caught in moving parts. Use of rubber gloves
and substantial footwear is recommended when working
outdoors. Wear heavy, long pants, long sleeves, boots, and
gloves. Do not wear short pants, sandals, or go barefoot.
Do not wear jewelry of any kind. Secure long hair above
shoulder level to prevent entanglement in moving parts.
Keep children away - Keep all bystanders, children, and
pets at least 50 ft. away.
WARNING:
Stay alert - Watch what you are doing. Use common
sense. Do not operate this unit when you are tired, ill, or
under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication. A
moment of inattention while operating tillers may result
in serious personal injury.
Do not operate in poor lighting.
Keep all parts of your body away from any moving part.
Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres,
such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or
dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust
or fumes.
Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as
pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an
increased risk of electric shock if your body is grounded.
Avoid Dangerous Environments - Don’t expose appliance
or tiller to rain or wet conditions. Water entering an ap-
pliance or tiller will increase the risk of electric shock.
Use Right Appliance - Do not force tool. Use the correct
tool for your application. The correct tool will do the job
better and safer at the rate for which it is designed.
Don’t Force Appliance – It will do the job better and with
less likelihood of a risk of injury at the rate for which it
was designed.
Do not operate the equipment while barefoot or when
wearing sandals or similar lightweight footwear. Wear
protective footwear that will protect your feet and improve
your footing on slippery surfaces.
Do not overreach - Keep firm footing and balance. Over-
reaching can result in loss of balance.
Avoid accidental starting - Release the bail before insert-
ing battery pack. Carrying tools with the bail engaged or
inserting the battery pack into a tool with the bail engaged
invites accidents.
Do not use tool if start button and bail do not turn it on
or off. Any tool that cannot be controlled with the start
button and bail is dangerous and must be repaired.
Disconnect battery pack - Disconnect battery pack from
the appliance before storing, servicing, or changing ac-
cessories such as tines. Such preventive safety measures
reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally.
Use only identical manufacturer’s replacement parts and
accessories. Use of any other parts may create a hazard
or cause product damage.
Check for damaged parts - Before further use of the tool,
any part that is damaged should be carefully checked
to determine that it will operate properly and perform its
intended function. Check for alignment of moving parts,
binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting,

and any other conditions that may affect its operation. A
guard or other part that is damaged should be properly
repaired or replaced by an authorized service dealer.
Never operate the machine without proper guards, plates,
or other safety protective devices in place.
Use only the manufacturer’s replacement tines. Do not
use any other cutting attachment, for example, metal wire,
rope, or the like. To install any other brand of tine to this
tiller can result in serious personal injury.
Never operate unit without the tine shield in place and in
good condition.
Keep all fasteners tight to be sure the cultivator is in safe
working condition.
Maintain a firm grip on both handles while cutlivating.
Store idle appliances indoors - When not in use, tiller
should be stored indoors in a dry, locked place out of
the reach of children.
Inspect area to be cultivated. Remove objects (rocks,
broken glass, nails, wire, string, etc.) which can be thrown
by tines.
Be extremely careful when tilling in hard ground. The
equipment may unexpectedly bounce upward or jump
forward if the tines should strike buried obstacles such
as large stones, roots, or stumps.
Keep the air vents clean and free of debris to avoid over-
heating the motor. Clean after each use.
Never operate the tiller without good visibility or light.
Rotating tines can cause severe injury; do not allow
hands, feet, or any other part of the body or clothing near
the rotating tines or any other moving part. The tines begin
to rotate once the start button is depressed and the bail
is engaged. The tines continue to rotate until the bail is
released.
Do not operate the machine without wearing adequate
outer garments. Avoid loose garments or jewelry that
could get caught in moving parts of the machine or its
engine.
Do not put hands or feet near or under tines.
Always refer to the operator’s manual for important details
if the tiller is to be stored for an extended period.
Do not use near underground electric cables, telephone
lines, pipes, or hoses. If in doubt, contact your utility or
telephone company to locate underground services.
If the unit strikes a foreign object, stop the motor, discon-
nect the battery pack, thoroughly inspect the machine for
any damage, and repair the damage before restarting and
operating the machine.
If the tiller should start to vibrate abnormally or become
noisy, stop the motor and check immediately for the
cause. Abnormal noise is generally a warning of trouble.
Stop the motor, remove the start key, and disconnect
the battery pack before unclogging the tines and when
making any repairs, adjustments, or inspections.
Do not overload the machine capacity by cultivating too
deep in a single pass or at too fast a rate.
Be aware that the equipment may unexpectedly bounce
upward or jump forward if the tines should strike buried
obstacles such as large stones, roots, or stumps.
Do not use any attachments or accessories not recom-
mended by the manufacturer of this product.
Never operate the equipment on a slope.
Use extreme caution when reversing or pulling the ma-
chine towards you.
Start the unit carefully according to instructions from a
normal operating position and with feet well away from
the tines. Do not force tiller. It will do the job better and
with less likelihood of a risk of injury at the rate for which
it was designed.
Maintain tiller with care. Keep tines clean for best perfor-
mance and reduce the risk of injury. Follow instructions
for lubrication and changing accessories. Inspect tines
periodically and, if damaged, have them replaced. Keep
handles dry, clean, and free from grease and lubricant.
Never use a hose, water, or any liquids to clean or rinse
off the tiller. Corrosive liquids, water, fertilizers, and
chemicals can enter the tiller and/or battery compartment
and damage electronic components and/or the battery
pack, which can result in a short circuit, increased risk
of fire, and serious personal injury. Remove any buildup
of dirt and debris on or around the tiller housing and/or
underneath the tiller. Wipe the tiller clean with a dry cloth
occasionally.
Check damaged parts. Before further use of this tiller,
a guard or other part that is damaged should be care-
fully checked to determine that it will operate properly
and perform its intended function. Check for alignment
of moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage of
parts, mounting, and any other condition that may af-
fect its operation. A guard or other part that is damaged
should be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized
service center unless otherwise indicated elsewhere in
this manual.
If appliance is not working as it should, has been dropped,
damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water, return it
to a service center.
Stop the unit and disconnect the power source when not
in use. Transport the unit with the tine motor stopped.
Store out of the reach of children.

Do not hang unit so that the bail bar is depressed.
Battery tools do not have to be plugged into an electrical
outlet; therefore, they are always in operating condition.
Be aware of possible hazards when not using your bat-
tery tool or when changing accessories. Following this
rule will reduce the risk of electric shock, fire, or serious
personal injury.
Do not charge battery tool in rain, or damp or wet location.
Following this rule will reduce the risk of electric shock.
Do not use battery-operated appliance in rain.
Remove or disconnect battery before servicing, cleaning
or removing material from the gardening appliance.
Use this product only with batteries and chargers listed in
tool/appliance/battery pack/charger correlation supple-
ment 988000-842.
Do not dispose of the batteries in a fire. The cell may
explode. Check with local codes for possible special
disposal instructions.
Do not open or mutilate the batteries. Released electrolyte
is corrosive and may cause damage to the eyes or skin.
It may be toxic if swallowed.
Do not place battery tools or their batteries near fire or
heat. This will reduce the risk of explosion and possibly
injury.
Batteries can explode in the presence of a source of igni-
tion, such as a pilot light. To reduce the risk of serious
personal injury, never use any cordless product in the
presence of open flame. An exploded battery can propel
debris and chemicals. If exposed, flush with water im-
mediately.
Do not crush, drop or damage battery pack. Do not
use a battery pack or charger that has been dropped or
received a sharp blow. A damaged battery is subject to
explosion. Properly dispose of a dropped or damaged
battery immediately.
Exercise care in handling batteries in order not to short the
battery with conducting materials such as rings, bracelets,
and keys. The battery or conductor may overheat and
cause burns.
For best results, your battery tool should be charged in
a location where the temperature is more than 50°F but
less than 100°F. To reduce the risk of serious personal
injury, do not store outside or in vehicles.
Under extreme usage or temperature conditions, battery
leakage may occur. If liquid comes in contact with your
skin, wash immediately with soap and water. If liquid gets
into your eyes, flush them with clean water for at least 10
minutes, then seek immediate medical attention. Following
this rule will reduce the risk of serious personal injury.
Do not use a battery pack or appliance that is damaged
or modified. Damaged or modified batteries may exhibit
unpredictable behavior resulting in fire, explosion or risk
of injury
When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other
metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws
or other small metal objects, that can make a connec-
tion from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery
terminals together may cause burns or a fire.
Do not expose a battery pack or appliance to fire or
excessive temperature. Exposure to fire or temperature
above 265°F may cause explosion.
Exercise extreme caution when crossing gravel surfaces.
Stay alert for hidden hazards or traffic.
Save these instructions. Refer to them frequently and
use them to instruct others who may use this power tool.
If you loan someone this power tool, loan them these
instructions also.

FEATURES
KNOW YOUR TILLER
See Figure 1.
The safe use of this product requires an understanding of the
information on the product and in this operator’s manual as
well as a knowledge of the project you are attempting. Before
use of this product, familiarize yourself with all operating
features and safety rules.
BATTERY COVER
The battery cover protects the battery port from moisture
and debris.
BRUSHLESS MOTORS
This product features two brushless motors that maximizes
power and performance as well as battery run time.
BULL BAR
The bull bar protects the front of the tiller when in use and
can also be used as a handle when transporting the tiller.
DRIVE SPEED CONTROL LEVER
Allows user to set the direction and speed settings for the
self-propelled feature.
FOUR ACTIVE BATTERY PORTS
This product has four active battery ports, two ports on
the left (PAIR A) and two ports on the right (PAIR B). To use
the tiller there must be at least two 40V batteries on either
the left side (PAIR A) or the right side (PAIR B). For optimal
performance, installing four 40V battery packs of 4Ah or
greater is recommended.
START BUTTON AND BAIL
The start button and bail are located on the upper handle
of the tiller. Depress the start button then engage the bail
to start the motor and tines. Release the bail to stop the
motor and tines.
NOTE: The motor and tines will also start if the bail is
engaged first and the start button is pressed after.
START KEY
The start key must be inserted and the indicator must point
toward a pair of two charged batteries before the tiller can
be started.
ASSEMBLY
UNPACKING
This product requires assembly.
Carefully remove the product and any accessories from
the box. Make sure that all items listed in the Packing
List are included.
WARNING:
Do not use this product if any parts on the Packing List
are already assembled to your product when you unpack
it. Parts on this list are not assembled to the product by
the manufacturer and require customer installation. Use
of a product that may have been improperly assembled
could result in serious personal injury.
Inspect the product carefully to make sure no breakage
or damage occurred during shipping.
Do not discard the packing material until you have
carefully inspected and satisfactorily operated the
product.

WARNING:
If any parts are damaged or missing, do not operate this
product until the parts are replaced. Use of this product
with damaged or missing parts could result in serious
personal injury.
WARNING:
Do not attempt to modify this product or create
accessories not recommended for use with this product.
Any such alteration or modification is misuse and could
result in a hazardous condition leading to possible serious
personal injury.
WARNING:
To prevent accidental starting that could cause serious
personal injury, always remove the start key and battery
packs from the product when assembling parts.
NOTICE:
Do not allow the cables connecting the control panel and
motor to become pinched or trapped during assembly.
INSTALLING THE UPPER HANDLE
See Figures 2 - 3.
Rotate the lower handle until it rests on the tine shield,
then slide the upper handle into the lower handle.
NOTE: The upper handle should fit inside the grooves in
the lower handle.
Align the holes in the lower handle with the holes in the
upper handle, and secure using bolts, washers and nuts.
Tighten securely.
Secure the two wire harness connectors of the wire
assembly by screwing the terminals together until thumb
tight with the integrated nut on the motor connector.
INSTALLING THE BULL BAR
See Figure 4.
Place the bull bar on the front of the tool.
Align the holes in the bull bar’s bracket with the threaded
holes at the front of the tool.
Install bolts and washers through the holes. Tighten
securely with the hex key provided.
INSTALLING THE BALLAST TANK
See Figure 5.
Carefully remove the cover from the ballast tank.
Remove the bolts and wing nuts from the ballast tank.
Place the ballast tank on the bull bar.
Algin the holes in the ballast tank with the holes in the
bull bar.
Insert bolts through the holes and install wing nuts.
Tighten securely.
Reinstall tank cover.
INSTALLING THE WHEELS
See Figure 6.
Wheels are provided to assist in moving the unit to and from
the work area. To install:
Slide a wheel onto the axle.
WARNING:
Ensure the wheels are installed for self-propulsion during
normal operation. Doing so will ensure the wheels provide
adequate resistance to the force generated during
tine rotation. If the wheels are installed in the wrong
position, the tine rotation could cause the unit to move
unexpectedly which could result in property damage or
serious personal injury.

ASSEMBLY
Rotate the wheel and align the hole in the wheel with one
of the holes in the axle.
• For normal operation and self-propulsion, align the
hole in the wheel with the hole farthest from the end
of the axle.
• For long distance operations or to transport the unit
with a dead battery, align the hole in the wheel with
the hole closest to the end of the axle.
Insert lock pin through the axle.
Wrap the lock pin’s wire lock around the rear of the axle
and secure it to the bottom of the lock pin.
Repeat with the second wheel.
ATTACHING THE DIRT FLAP
See Figure 7.
Remove the bolts, washers, and nuts from the dirt flap.
Align holes in the dirt flap with the holes in the hinges at
the rear of the tiller.
Secure in place using bolts, washers, and nuts.
INSTALLING THE TINES
See Figures 7 - 8.
With user facing the REAR of the tiller, the left tine assembly
is marked “L”. The right inner tine assembly is marked “R”.
For correct operation of the unit, the tines must be installed
in the correct position.
From the rear of the tool, tilt the unit forward and lift the
dirt flap up to access the tine shaft.
NOTE: If the side panels are installed, remove them.
Place the tine assemblies on the tine shaft as shown.
Rotate the tine assemblies until the holes in the assemblies
are aligned with the holes in the tine shaft.
NOTE: If the holes do not align, the tine assemblies may
be installed on the wrong sides. Reverse the position of
the tine assemblies and check for hole alignment.
Insert shear pins through the holes in the tine assemblies
and the shaft. Secure with hitch clips.
INSTALLING THE SIDE PANELS
See Figure 9 - 10.
Place an upper side panel on either side of the unit.
Align holes in the upper side panel with the holes on the
side of the unit.
Install screws into the three middle holes to secure the
upper side panel to the unit.
Position the lower side panel as shown.
Slide a screw through the hole at the narrow end of the
lower side panel.
Place a spacer on the screw then, install the screw into
the hole closest to the wheel and tighten loosely.
Adjust the position of the lower side panel until the top
hole on the wide end of the panel is aligned with the hole
closest to the rear of the tool.
Slide a screw through a lock knob and the lower side
panel.
Install the screw into the hole closest to the rear of the
tool.
Tighten screw securely.Do not overtighten.
Repeat the process on the other side to install second
upper and lower side panels.
To raise and lower a side panel:
Loosen the lock knob.
Raise or lower the lower side panel into one of the four
positions.
Tighten the knob to secure lower side panel in place.
NOTE: Rotate the side panels up to avoid clogging and
maximize tilling depth or down to prevent damaging nearby
objects and blowing debris.
INSTALLING THE DEPTH BAR
See Figure 11.
Remove the handle and nut from the depth bar.
Raise the dirt flap at the rear of the tool to gain access
to the underside of the depth bar bracket.
Insert the depth bar into the bottom of the bracket with
the stop plate facing the rear of the tool.
Pull the spring loaded lock knob out and continue insert-
ing the depth bar until several holes are visible above the
top of the bracket.
Release the lock knob and move the depth bar up or
down until the knob snaps into one of the holes.
Install the handle and nut into the top hole in the depth
bar.
NOTE: When viewed from the rear of the tool, the depth
bar handle will be on the left side of the tool.
To reposition the depth bar, pull the lock knob out and
move the depth bar up or down.
NOTE: High positions are best for deeptilling of soft soil,
medium positions are suitable for general cultivation and
aeration, and low positions are best for shallow cultivation
and hard soil.

operate this product until all missing or damaged parts
are replaced. Please contact customer service or an
authorized service center for assistance.
APPLICATIONS
You may use this product for the purpose listed below:
Breaking up garden soil to prepare seed bed for planting
Shallow cultivating to remove weeds
INSTALLING/REMOVING BATTERY
See Figures 12 and 13.
To install battery packs:
Raise the battery cover.
Align raised ribs on battery pack with grooves in the bat-
tery port and install the battery pack into the tiller.
WARNING:
Make sure the latch on the bottom of the battery pack
snaps in place and the battery pack is fully seated
and secure in the tiller’s battery port before beginning
operation. Failure to securely seat the battery pack could
cause the battery pack to fall out, resulting in serious
personal injury.
Lower the battery cover and make sure it is securely
closed.
NOTE: This product has four active battery ports, two ports
on the left (PAIR A) and two ports on the right (PAIR B). To
use the tiller there must be at least two 40V batteries on
either the left side (PAIR A) or the right side (PAIR B). For
optimal performance, install four 40V battery packs of 4Ah
or greater is recommended. If only one battery is installed on
either the left or the right side, that battery will not provide
power to the unit.
To remove battery packs:
Raise the battery cover.
Press and hold the battery latch button at the bottom of
the battery pack.
Remove battery pack from the tiller.
Lower the battery cover and make sure it is securely
closed.
For complete charging instructions, refer to the Operator’s
Manuals for your RYOBI battery pack and charger models.
WARNING:
To avoid accidental starting that could result in serious
personal injury, always remove the start key and battery
packs when moving or transporting the tiller.
STARTING/STOPPING THE TILLER
See Figures 14 - 16.
WARNING:
Ensure the wheels are installed for self-propulsion during

Insert the start key into the slot in front of the battery
ports.
NOTE: The start key can be inserted with the arrow facing
the two ports on the left (PAIR A) or the two ports on the
right (PAIR B). To start, the arrow must be facing a pair
of charged battery packs.
Close the battery cover.

OPERATION
Raise the back of the unit so the tines and depth bar do
not contact the ground.
Press and hold the start button. Pull the bail toward the
handle and release the start button when the motor and
tines start.
NOTE: The motor and tines will also start if the bail is
engaged first and the start button is pressed after.
To stop the unit, release the bail.
TRANSPORT MODE OPERATION
See Figure 15.
Transport mode can be used to power the tiller from one
location to another without engaging the tines.
Raise the back of the unit so the tines and depth bar do
not contact the ground.
Press and hold the transport mode button. Pull the bail
toward the handle and release the transport mode button
when the motor starts.
NOTE: In transport mode, the motor will start but the
tines will not rotate.
Push the drive speed control lever forward to increase
the speed and rearward to decrease the speed.
For reverse, pull the drive speed control lever fully rear-
ward.
DRIVE SPEED CONTROL LEVER
See Figure 15.
Use the drive speed control lever to change drive speed and
choose the direction of movement. To use the drive speed
control lever:
Start the tiller.
Push the drive speed control lever forward to increase
forward speed.
Pull the drive speed control lever rearward to decrease
forward speed.
For reverse, pull the drive speed control lever fully rear-
ward.
NOTE: Tine rotation is halted when the lever is in the
reverse position.
PREPARING THE SEED BED
See Figures 17 - 18.
WARNING:
Do not allow hands, feet, or any other part of the body
or clothing near the rotating tines or any other moving
part. The tines begin to rotate once the start button is
depressed and bail is pulled. The tines continue to rotate
until the bail is released. Failure to avoid contact could
cause serious personal injury.
WARNING:
To avoid personal injury, never transport the tiller while
the tines are running. Move the tiller to the work area
before starting the tines.
WARNING:
After extended periods of use, the tiller gearbox may
become hot. To avoid burns, do not touch the gearbox
until it has had time to cool down.
WARNING:
Always hold the tiller away from the body keeping
clearance between the body and the tiller. Any contact
with the tines while operating can result in serious
personal injury.
The tiller can be used to break up garden soil and prepare
a seedbed for planting. Plan ahead to leave enough room
between the seed rows to allow for machine cultivating after
the plants have grown.
Roll the machine to the work area.
NOTE: If desired, the machine can be moved in transport
mode.
Adjust the position of the depth bar for shallow or deep
cultivation (refer to Installing the depth bar).
NOTE: Based on the type of soil being cultivated and
soil conditions at the time, the appropriate position of
the depth bar will vary.

MAINTENANCE
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most
plastics are susceptible to damage from various types of
commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use. Use
clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, grease, etc.
WARNING:
Do not at any time let brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-
based products, penetrating oils, etc., come in contact
with plastic parts. Chemicals can damage, weaken, or
destroy plastic which can result in serious personal injury.
LUBRICATION
All of the bearings in this product are lubricated with a
sufficient amount of high grade lubricant for the life of the
unit under normal operating conditions. Therefore, no further
bearing lubrication is required.
STORING THE TILLER
Clean dirt, grass, and other materials from the entire unit.
Wipe the tines with oil or spray them with silicone lubricant
to prevent rusting.
Do not remove the motor cover.
Order new parts to replace any that are badly worn or
broken.
Store in an upright position in a clean, dry place.
Stand behind the unit with the tines on the ground and
the work area clean and free of obstructions.
Start the tiller.
For forward operation, gradually move the speed control
lever forward. For reverse, move the lever completely
rearward.
NOTE: Tine rotation is halted when the lever is in the
reverse position.
NOTE: Several passes over the same path may be required
to reach the desired depth. Do not try to dig too deeply in
the first pass. If the machine jumps or bucks, allow the unit
to move forward at a slightly faster rate, adjust the position
of the depth bar, or add sand to the ballast tank.
To dig more deeply, continuously pull the tiller towards you
and let it pull itself forward.
If the machine stays and digs in one spot, lift up gently on
the handlebars. The forward motion of the tires will pull the
machine forward and overcome the force from tine rotation.
If the soil is very hard, water a few days before cultivating.
Avoid working the soil when soggy or wet. Wait a day or two
after heavy rain for the ground to dry.
When tilling in confined areas or rows, rotate the lower side
panels down to avoid damaging nearby objects. When tilling
in dry conditions, lower the side panels to keep dust at a
minimum.

Si l’appareil frappe un corps étranger, couper le moteur,
déconnecter les blocs-piles, inspecter complètement

redémarrer l’équipement et de le faire fonctionner.
Dans le cas où le cultivateur commencera à vibrer
anormalement, arrêter le moteur et faire immédiatement
une vérification pour la cause. Généralement, un bruit
anormal avertit qu’il y a un problème.
Arrêter le moteur, retirer la clé de démarrage, et déconnecter
les blocs-piles avant d’éliminer les obstructions des dents
