Important safety
precautions
Read these guidelines before using your wireless
phone. Failure to comply with them may be
dangerous or illegal.
Road safety at all times
Do not use a hand-held phone while driving; park
the vehicle first.
Switching off when refuelling
Do not use the phone at a refuelling point (service
station) or near fuels or chemicals.
Switching off in an aircraft
Wireless phones can cause interference. Using them
in an aircraft is both illegal and dangerous.
Switching off near all medical equipment
Switch off your phone near medical equipment.
Hospitals or health care facilities may be using
equipment that could be sensitive to external RF
energy. Follow any regulations or rules in force.
Interference
All wireless phones may be subject to interference,
which could affect their performance.
Special regulations
Meet any special regulations in force in any area
and always with off your phone whenever it is
forbidden to use it, or when it may cause
interference or danger (in a hospital for example).
Water resistance
Your phone is not water-resistant. Keep it dry.

Important safety precautions

Sensible use
Use only in the normal position (held to the ear).
Avoid unnecessary contact with the antenna when
the phone is switched on.
Emergency call
Key in the emergency number for your present
location, then press the key. Give all necessary
information as accurately as possible. Do not end
the call until given permission to do so.
Keeping small children away from your phone
Keep the phone and all its parts including
accessories out of the reach of small children.
Accessories and batteries
Use only Samsung-approved accessories and
batteries. Use of any unauthorised accessories
could damage your phone and may be dangerous.
Qualified service
Only qualified service personnel may repair your
phone.

With the phone closed

Performs the functions indicated by the
text on the bottom line of the display.
In Standby mode; quickly enters the
following menus respectively:
• Up:
VOD .
• Down: I.Beam .
• Left:
uni-Mail . This key accesses the
Message menu when held down.
• Right:
Calendar .
In Menu mode, scrolls through the
menu options.
When entering text, moves the cursor,
depending on which side you push.
Enters the
uni menu.
Makes or answers a call.
In Standby mode, retrieves the most
recent numbers dialled, received, or
missed calls from. Redials the last
number when pressed and held.

Ends a call. Also switches the phone on

In Menu mode, cancels your input and
returns the phone to Standby mode.

voice command when pressed and held.
In the text entry mode, changes the
case of letters.
In Standby mode, quickly activates or
deactivates Silent mode when pressed

Display layout
The display has three areas:

Icon Description
Signal strength : Shows the received
signal strength. The greater the number of
bars, the better the signal.
Service : Appears when a call is in
progress.
No service : Appears when you are
outside a service area. When it displays,
you cannot make or receive calls. Wait a
little while for a better signal or move into
an open area to regain service.
Lock mode : Appears when your phone is
locked.
Restriction on : Appears when any option
of the restriction feature is activated.
New e-mail notification : Indicates that
there is a new e-mail notification waiting
to be viewed.
Retrieved Mail message : Indicates
that there is a retrieved Mail message
waiting to be viewed.
New web alert : Appears when a new web
message has been received.
New SMS : Indicates that there is a new
text message waiting to be viewed.
New voice mail : Indicates that there is a
new voice mail waiting to be viewed.

Urgent SMS : Indicates that there is an
urgent message waiting to be viewed.
Samsung messenger invite message :
Indicates that there is a new Samsung
messenger invite message waiting to be
viewed.
Alarm mode : Appears when you set an
alarm to ring at a specified time.
Roaming : Appears when you are out of
your home area and have logged onto a
different network; for example, when
travelling in other countries.
Ringer on : Appears when you set the
ringer type for calls to
Ringer only .
Ringer off : Appears when the ring type
for calls is set to
Silent .
1-Beep : Appears when you set the ringer
type for calls to
1 Beep .
Vibration : Appears when the ringer type
for calls is set to
Vibration .
Vibration + ringer : Appears when the
ringer type for calls is set to

Your phone

External display
Your phone has an external display on the front of
the phone. It indicates when you have an incoming
call or a message. It also alerts you at a specified
time when you have set an alarm. The backlight
turns on and the corresponding icon appears on the
external display.
When you close the phone, the display shows the
current time in a digital clock. You can change the
clock type in the
External clock menu ( Menu 4-
6
).
Ringer then vibration : Appears when
the ringer type for calls is set to
Ringer

.
Silent mode : Appears when your phone is
in Silent mode.
Battery status : Shows the level of your
battery. The more bars you see, the more
power you have remaining.

Backlight
The backlight illuminates the display and the
keypad. When you press any key or open the
phone, the backlight comes on. It goes off when no
keys have been pressed within a given period of
time, depending on the setting in the
Backlight
menu (
Menu 4-3 ). See page 116 for further
details.
Camera
The camera on the front of the phone allows you to
take a photo or record a video while on the move.
For further details about the camera feature, see
page 98.

Getting started
Using a UIM card
The UIM (User Identification Module) card contains
chips with all the information required to operate
your phone. Note the following:
• Keep all UIM cards out of the reach of small
children.
• The UIM card and its contact can be easily
damaged by scratching or bending, so be careful
when handling, inserting, or removing the card.
Installing the UIM card
1. If necessary, remove the battery by referring to
page 20.
2. Slide a card into the slot, as shown, so that it
locks the card into position.
Make sure that the metal contacts of the card
face down into the phone.
