1. Safety regulations
1.1. Introduction
SOMMERERpitliftsarearesultofmanyyearsofexperience.Thehigh
qualitystandardandthesuperiordesignguaranteereliability,longser-
vicelifeandefcientoperation.Youshouldreadthisoperatingmanual
attentivelyandalwaysobservethecontentstopreventunnecessary
damageandhazards.Thisoperatingmanualisapplicablebothforrail-
mountedpitliftsaswellasforfreelymovablelifts.
1.2. Application areas of the SOMMERER pit lifts
SOMMERER pit lifts are only permitted to be used for partial lifting
of vehicles with support afterwards and/or for lifting and lowering
vehicle parts (e.g. engines, gearboxes etc.). In doing so, the load
must not exceed the maximum permitted load capacity of the pit
lift.
Important: Any other or use beyond the described purpose is
deemed as unintended use.

alsoincludes:

1.3. Notes for compliance with the operating manual
• Thebasicrequirementforsafehandlingandtrouble-freeoperation
ofthepitliftistheknowledgeofthebasicsafetyinstructionsand
safetyregulations.
• Theoperatingmanualmustbeobservedbyallpersonswhoworkon
thepitlift.ThisparticularlyappliesforChapter1.8SpecicHazards.
• Theapplicablerulesandregulationsfortheoperatingsitemust
beobservedinadditiontothesafetyinstructionsintheoperating
manual.

1.4. Obligation of the site operator
Thesiteoperatorisobligedtoonlyallowpersonstoworkonthesystem
who
• arefamiliarwiththebasicregulationsforoccupationalhealthand
safetyandaccidentpreventionandwhohavebeeninstructedabout
handlingthesystem.
• havereadandunderstoodthesafetychapterandwarningsand
haveconrmedthiswiththeirsignature.
1.5. Hazards handling the pit lift
TheSOMMERERpitliftshavebeendesignedandconstructedaccor-
dingtothestateoftheartandtherecognisedsafetyregulations.Ne-
vertheless,unintendedusemayendangerlifeandlimboftheoperator
ordamageproperty.Thepitliftisonlypermittedtobeused:
• fortheintendeduse
• insafe,faultlesscondition
► Faultswhichcanadverselyaffectsafetymustberectiedimmediately.
• Onlyputthepitliftinmotioniftherearenopersonsinthedanger
area.
• Themovementrangeofthepitliftmustbekeptclear.
• Nopersonsarepermittedtobepresentinthemovementrangeof
thepitlift.
• Themaximumpermittedloadcapacityofthepitliftmustnotbe
exceeded.
• Climbingonthepitlift,ridingonitandclimbingontheloadare
forbidden!
• Onlyloadliftcentrally,liftvehicleandcheckthesafevehiclesupport;
donotlifttotherequiredheightuntilthen
• Securethevehicleagainstrollingaway.

• Maketheliftingandloweringmovementsevenly.Monitortheload
duringthemovement.
• Pit lifts and transmission lifts are not suitable for holding loads over
an extended period. Therefore, the raised load must be secured using
support bridges or support blocks.
1.6. Organisational measures
• Theoperatingmanualmustalwaysbekeptreadytohandatthe
operatingsiteofthepitlift.
• Inadditiontotheoperatinginstructions,observeandenforcethege-
nerallyapplicablestatutoryandotherbindingregulationsconcerning
accidentpreventionandenvironmentalprotection.
• Checkatleastoccasionallythesafetyandrisk-consciousworkof
thepersonnelandcompliancewiththeoperatinginstructions.
• Usepersonalprotectiveequipmentifnecessaryorrequiredbyregu-
lations.
• Observeallsafetyinstructionsanddangerwarningsonthepitlift.
• Allsafetyinstructionsanddangerwarningsonthepitliftmustbe
maintainedinlegiblecondition.
• Donotmakeanychanges,attachmentstoandmodicationsofthe
pitliftwhichcouldaffectsafetywithoutthepermissionofthemanu-
facturer.Thisparticularlyappliesforweldingonload-bearingparts.
• Sparepartsmustcomplywiththetechnicalrequirementsspecied
bythemanufacturer.Thisisonlyguaranteedfororiginalparts.
• Complywithlegaldeadlinesorthosespeciedintheoperatingma-
nualforrecurringtests/inspections.
►In the event of malfunctions, shut down the pit lift immediately and
secureagainstrestarting.Havefaultsrectiedimmediately.

1.7. Maintenance tasks, fault clearance, disposal
• Complywiththeadjustmentandmaintenancework,inspectionsand
datesincludinginformationaboutthereplacementofparts/individual
componentsspeciedintheoperatingmanual.Theseactivitiesmust
onlybeperformedbyqualiedpersonnel.
• Alwaystightenscrewconnectionswhichhavebeenundoneorloo-
senedduringmaintenanceandrepairwork.
• Arrangesafeandenvironmentallysounddisposalofoperatingand
auxiliarymaterials(hydraulicoil)andexchangeparts.
1.8. Specichazards
Hydraulics, pneumatics
• Workonhydraulicequipmentmustonlybeperformedbypersons
withknowledgeandexperienceofhydraulics.
• Checkalllines,hosesandscrewconnectionsregularlyforleaksand
externallyrecognisabledamage.Rectifyanydamageimmediately.
Squirtingoilcanresultininjuriesandre.
• Depressurisepressurelinestobeopened(hydraulics,compressed
air)beforestartingrepairwork.
►Lay and mount hydraulic and compressed air lines properly. Do not
mix up connections. Fittings, length and quality of the hose lines must
comply with the requirements.
Oils, grease and other chemical substances
Observetheapplicablesafetyregulationsfortheproductwhenhand-
lingoils,greasesandotherchemicalsubstances.

2. Description
2.1. Utilization and application
Thepitliftisdesignedexclusivelyfortheverticalliftingofmotor
vehiclesoverassemblypits,withamax.axleloadcorrespondingtothe
max.liftingcapacityofthelift.
Theliftmustbecommissionedbyacompetentandtrainedperson.The
designoftheliftmaynotbemodiedinanyway.
Theloadraisedusingtheliftmustbesupportedusingsuitablesupport
systems.ERICHSOMMERERGmbHalsoprovidesthesesupport
systems.
►For FKE-FV: When working under lifts with drive-on rails, always

2.2. Description of design and functions
Theseelectrohydraulicpitliftsaredesignedforliftingmotorvehicles
aboveassemblypits.Thepitliftcanbemovedlengthwaysandcross-
waysinthepit.
ThepitliftHKEconsistsessentiallyofasupportingplatewithaxles
andrunningrollers.Theliftingcylinderisweldedtothemidpointofthe
supportingplate.Abaseplateisweldedunderneaththeliftingcylinder.
AtFKE,thebaseplateisconnectedtothechassis.Thecontrolisper-
formedusinganUPpushbuttoninstalledontheliftandanUP-DOWN
buttonloweringvalve.
Thepistonrodandguidearebuiltintotheliftingcylinder.Atthetop,the
pistonrodhasaholedrilledtotakeholdingdevices.Anattachedsup-
portplateservesastheloadbearingdevice.Othersuitablesupports
canbeattachedforspecialloadapplicationpointsonvehicles(see
accessories).
Thehydraulicaggregateislocatedattherearofthecylinder.Forvehic-
lesthathavetobeliftedattwopoints,attachablecrossmembersmust
beused(seeaccessories:axlecrossbeams,supportsystems).

2.3. Transport
Thepitliftcanbetransportedstandingorlying.Theoilllingnozzle
withintegratedoildipstickisreplacedduringtransportbyatightly
sealingstopper.Thisstoppermustbereplacedbytheoilllingnozzle-
beforecommissioning
3. Installation
3.1. General
l
Thepitliftshouldbeinstalledbythemanufacturer’sorthesales
company‘strainedinstallers.Ifthesiteoperatorhassufcientlytrained
installers(experts),thepitliftcanalsobeinstalledbythem.
Thecorrectinstallationandcommissioningmustbeinspectedbyan
expertandconrmedinthecommissioninglogonpage4.
3.2. Setup and installation location HKE
Adjustable chassis:
• Thechassisissuitedforaspacingof860to1,000mmbetweenthe
runningrails.
• Theupto14,5tadjustablerolleraxlesmustbesetsothatthedis-
tancebetweentherollercollarandtherunningrailsisnomorethan
10mm.
• Pushthechassisoncealongtheentirelengthofthepittoensure
this.
• Thedistancefromtherollercollartothepitrunningrailmustnot
exceed10mmatanypoint!
• Inthisposition,theM10safetyboltsmustbedrilled.Todothis,rst
tightentheboltssothatthetipoftheboltpressesintotheaxle.
• Thendrilltheaxlewithan8mmdrillbit.Securethesafetyboltswith
locknutsaftertightening.

Welded chassis (from 16 t or on request):
• Thechassiswasmanufacturedaccordingtoyourpitsize;theroller
collarmustmakecontactwiththerunningrail.
• Hereagain,themaximumdistancebetweentherollercollarandthe
runningrailmustnotexceed10mm.
►In general, the following applies to both the adjustable and the welded
chassis
• Thestandardrunningrollersareauthorizedonlyforattoslightly
conicalcontact;theymayneedtobeadaptedbyre-turningtomore
tiltedrunningrails.Foranextrachargewewillprovidethecorres-
pondingrollers(sketchrequired!).
• It is not permitted to extend the rollers to compensate for misalign-
ment.
• Itmaybenecessarytostraightenthepitbyweldingincompensating
proles.Protrudingconcrete,interferingpipingorwiring,etc.must
beremoved.
• Suspendtheliftinthechassis;mountthelockingbracketaccording
totheinstructions.
3.3. Bleeding
• Ifthelift(hydraulicunit)hasdrawninairduetooilleveltoolow,oil
mustbelledintheheadplateattheoilnozzlewhenthepistonrod
islowered.
• Extendliftcompletelyandll0.1lofhydraulicoilattheunit.
• Openthebleedscrewontherightoftheheadplateby3turns,
• Moveliftcompletelytothetop(againststop)andkeeprunninguntil
onlyoilstilldischarges.
• Closebleedscrew.
• Lowerliftcompletely;ifnecessarypresspistonrodcompletelytothe
bottombyhand.Indoingso,excessoilmaydischargeattheunit.

• Checkoillevelmonitoringonthelift.Repeattheprocedureifneces-
sary.
3.4. Setup and installation location for FKE
Dependingonthemodel,thepitliftisguidedonthepitoorinor
onrunningrails,oritisfreelymovableontheoorofthepit.
Chassis model Z
ModelZhasachassisthatrunsontheoorinU-proles,L-prolesora
atsteelplateinstalledatthesite(preferablyU100).Theprolesmust
bealignedexactlyparallel,towithin10mm.Toinstalltherollers,open
theU-proleatasuitablelocation.
Thepitliftisalsofreelymovablecrosswiseinthechassis.
► Important!BeforeinsertingthechassisandliftintheU-prole,they
must be secured so that they cannot move.
Chassis model F
TheFmodelhasachassiswhichrunsalongtheoor,similartotheZ
model.Aatsteelplatecanbeusedfortherunningsurface.Therollers
oftheliftthenrunontheatsteel.Thischassiscanbeguidedlaterally
inthepitbymeansofadjustablespacerrollers.
Chassis model FV
Thechassisofthisliftisfreelymovableupto1,000kgonsteering
rollers.Loadsexceeding1,000kgpushdownonthesprings,sothat
theframeisontheoor.Theliftisboltedsolidlytothemidpoint.The
runningrollersoftheliftthenrundirectlyontheoorofthepit.Theoor
mustbesuitableforthispurpose,i.e.level,solidandclean.
Chassis model FV-Q
AchassismodelFV.Inadditiontheliftcanalsobemovedcrossways
onitschassis.Undernormalconditions,theliftiscompletelystable.
Sincethechassisisnotsecuredontheooragainsttipping,youshould
beawareoftheresultingdangers.Extremesideloadingonaliftthat
canbemovedlaterallycanresultinadditionaltippingmoments.There-
fore,sideloadingshouldalwaysbeavoided.
3.5. Electrical connection
Thepitliftmaybeconnectedonlytoa3-phase400Vsupplywith3x16
Afuses.Afterconnection,runthemotorjustbriey.Ifthepumpdoes
notsupplyoil(thepistonroddoesnotextend),then2phasesmust

beswappedwitheachother.Ifaconnectioncable,otherthantheone
whichissupplied,isusedforthelift,itisessentialtouseanH07RNF
castrubbercable.
Checksupplylinefordamageandreplaceimmediatelyifnecessary.
Theliftisalsoavailablefor240Vmainspower.Specialcircuitdiagrams
mustbeobservedhere.Cableswithlargecrosssectionarerequired.
4. Operation
Therespectiveapplicableaccidentpreventionregulationsmustbe
compliedwith.
• Thepitliftisonlypermittedtobeoperatedbytrainedpersonnel.
• Onlyputthepitliftinmotionifthereisnodangertopersons.
• Themovementrangeofthepitliftmustbekeptclearandnoper-
sonsarepermittedtobeinthemovementrange.
• Themaximumpermittedloadcapacityofthepitliftmustnotbe
exceeded.
• Climbingonthepitlift,ridingonitandclimbingontheloadare
forbidden.
• Onlyloadliftcentrally,liftvehicleandcheckthesafevehiclesupport;
donotlifttotherequiredheightuntilthen.
• Ensurethatloadiscentered!Holdnon-centeredloadswithcross
members(2-pointsupport).
• Theloadbearingdevicemustbecentredontheload.Watchoutfor
theshiftincentreofgravityduringlifting.
• Maketheliftingandloweringmovementsevenly.Monitortheload
duringthemovement.
• Theraisedloadmustbesupportedwithsupportbridgesorsupport
blocks.
• Enginesmustbesecuredreliablyagainstslipping,slidingandtilting

ontheloadbearingdevice.
• Movingtheliftunderloadisonlypermittedifspecialsafetymeasu-
resareobserved.
• Attachedequipment(e.g.gearboxplates)forengineandgearbox
installationandremovalmustnotbepivotedortiltedsothatthe
structuralstabilityisreduced.Thismeans:allloadstobeliftedare
centeredandevenlydistributed.
4.1. Lifting loads
• Beforeusingtheliftforavehicle,releasethehandbrakeandshift
thetransmissiontoneutral.
• Attachliftinggearateven,load-bearingpointswhicharespecied
bythevehiclemanufacturer.
• Theloadbearingdevicemustbecenteredontheload.Watchout
fortheshiftincentreofgravityduringlifting.
• Youmustkeepthemovementareaofthevehiclefree,andkeepthe
vehiclebeingmovedunderobservation.
• Itisforbiddenforanyonetoentertheareaofmovement.
• Intheeventofmalfunctions,shutdowntheunitimmediatelyand
notifysupervisor/servicedepartment.
• AlwaysobservetheapplicableregulationsEN1494:2009-5/BGG
945/BGR500
• Toraiseorlower,presstheappropriatepushbutton.orloweringvalve
4.2. Lowering loads
►Make lowering movements slowly and evenly. Monitor the load during
the movement.
• Monitortheloadduringthemovement.

• Removerollingawayprotection(wheelchocks).
• Raisevehicleslightlyandremovesupportbridges.
• Onlyopenthethreadedspindleaverylittleforloweringtheload.
• Theloweringspeediscontinuouslycontrolledbyturningthethrea-
dedspindleanticlockwise.
• Turnthethreadedspindleasfarasthestopforfurtherlowering
withoutload.
4.3. Load bearing devices and support bridges
Variousloadbearingdevicesareavailableforliftingvehiclesandvehic-
leparts.Theseincludesupportplates,crossmembers,gearboxplates,
specialmountingsandextensions.
Liftedvehiclesmustbesecuredwithsupportbridgesorsupportblocks.
Supportbridgesarealwaysmanufacturedtothepitdimensions.Their
securesupportmustbeguaranteedoverthecompletelengthofthepit.
4.4. Instructions for use
Themanualforcesforstartingtheunloadedpitliftareatmost300N,
andtheforcesrequiredtomaintainthemotionaremax.200N.Ifthese
forcesareexceeded,e.g.becauseofaroughrunway,thenasecond
personmustassist.
• Neverexceedthemaximumpermittedloadcapacityoftheload
bearingdevices.
• Irrespectiveoftheloadbearingdevice,theloadcentreofgravity
mustalwaysbepreciselycentralabovethepitlift.
• Onlyuseloadbearingdeviceswithappropriatestuds.
• Donotstackextensionpieces.
• Transportofvehiclesonthepitliftisnotpermittedwhentheliftis
completelyloweredandifthepartshavebeensecuredwithstraps
orchains.

• Attachallloadbearingdevicesdirectlytothepistonrod.
• Donotuseanystrokeextensionbetweenliftandliftinggear(cross
member,gearboxplateetc.).
• Theliftsarenotsuitableforuseincarwashsystems;ifusedthere,
theymustbesuitablycoveredandprotectedtopreventdamage
fromthehighhumidity.Thewarrantydoesnotcoverrust!Residue
fromunderbodysealingcompoundswilldestroytheseals.
• Duetothecornerloadofthesupportingplates,damagetotheoor
cannotberuledout.Coveringwithtilesisonlyappropriatewhenthe
oorisverylevel.
• Undernormaloperatingconditions,thisuniversalliftingdeviceis
completelystable.Sincethechassisisnotsecuredagainsttipping
ontheoor,youshouldbeawareofthepossibledangers.Therefo-
re,sideloadingshouldalwaysbeavoided.
5. MAINTENANCE
5.1. Special instructions
OriginalSOMMERERPITLIFTSrequireminimalmaintenance.Itis
importantthatthepistonrodbekeptclean.Damagemustbe
immediatelypolishedoutwithagentletransition.Whenworkingwith
stronglyadheringunderbodycompounds(underbodyprotection,wax
etc.)thepistonrodmustbefullycoveredor-beforeloweringthelift-
cleaned
Suchcompoundsgumuptheupperdirtandwaterwiperring,which
thennolongerfunctionsproperly.
►Do not clean pit lifts with high-pressure or steam cleaners,
since cleaning agents can penetrate the valves and cause
malfunctions.
5.2. Maintenance
Thepistonrod,studsoftheloadcarryingdevice,runningrollersand
othermovingpartsmustalwaysbelightlyoiled.

Everytimethatitisretracted,thepistonrodpassescompletelythrough
theplungersystemintothehydraulicoil,andistherebyautomatically
lubricatedandprotectedagainstcorrosion.
Thehydraulicoilmustbechangedafternomorethansixyearsof
operation.TheinitialllatthefactoryiswithBPHLPHM35.
Acomparableoilcanbeusedwhenchangingtheoil.
5.3. Oil level check
Important for oil level check
►Disconnect the pit lift from the compressed air network!
►Check oil only when unit is not under pressure
►Check oil only when lift is not in motion.
►Ensure absolute cleaniness
► Useonlylteredhydraulicoil
►Check oil level at least once per month.
Bleeding
Thepitliftissuppliedlledwithoil,andhasbeenbled.If,afteran
extended period of operation or after an oil change, the piston rod
extends jerkily, then the bleed screw underneath the head plate
on the cylinder should be opened until oil escapes.
6. Malfunctions
6.1. General
• Quiteoftentheproblemsthatcauseamalfunctionareminor.Lo-
catingthecauseofamalfunctionisalmostalwaysthemosttime-
consumingtaskintroubleshooting.Asanautomotiveexpert,you
cancarryoutnearlyalltroubleshootingtasksyourself,inorderto
savemoney.
• Beforeshipping,everyliftissubjectedtoseveralprecisefunction
testsunderoperatingconditionswithanexcessiveload.Inaddition,
asealcheckandcompletenesscheckarecarriedout.
However,ifpartsaremissingatthetimeofdelivery,orifmalfunctions
occurduringcommissioning,theninourdailyexperiencethecauseis
inmostcasesbeyondourcontrol.

6.2. Troubleshooting
a) Lift does not pump or will not hold a load
• Insufcientoilpossiblylostduringtransport.Addlow-viscosity

bedefective.Thisgenerallydoesnotoccuruntilafteratleastfour
years.Inthiscase,theliftmustbeoverhauled.
Removaloftheguide:Disconnectthepitliftfromthepowersupply.
Unscrewtheguideusingasuitabletool.Thepistonrodcanremainin
thelift.Afterinstallation,bleedthelift;seepage13.

• Resealtheguide,replacethewiperringandthegroovering
c) Oil loss on the lifting or lowering spindle
• Replaceseals;lubricateallslidingpartswithMolykote.

dimensionsofthepistonrod,theliftheight,andtheyearofmanufac-
ture.
Intheeventofmajorrepairs,andafter4to5yearsatthelatest,thelift
shouldundergothoroughmaintenanceandoverhaul,forsafetyrea-
sons.
Wewillrepairyourequipmentwithinafewdays,withafullfactory
warranty.Replacementequipmentisavailableforcommonmodelsand
loadcapacities
