Electrostatic sensitive devices (ESD)

These components can easily be destroyed if handled incorrectly.

Recommendations on network security 3
To prevent unauthorized access, note the following security recommendations.
General
• You should make regular checks to make sure that the device meets these recommendations
and/or other security guidelines.
• Evaluate your plant as a whole in terms of security. Use a cell protection concept with suitable
products.
• When the internal and external network are disconnected, an attacker cannot access internal
data from the outside. Therefore operate the device only within a protected network area.
• For communication via non-secure networks use additional devices with VPN functionality to
encrypt and authenticate the communication.

4.1 Network topologies with SCALANCE XCM-100
You can build the following topologies with the SCALANCE XCM-100 series media converters:
• Line
• Star
• Redundant ring when two media converters are used
The connection status (Link up or Link down) of the twisted pair ports always corresponds to
the connection status of the SFP ports. If the connection status for one of the two ports changes,
this change also takes e󹪜ect for the other port without signi󹪝cant time delay. There may be a
delay of a few seconds with two coupled media converters. In this case, the full connection is
󹪝rst monitored before the connection is activated.
In addition, you can use the devices of the SCALANCE XCM-100 product group for two special
applications:
• "Cascading" two media converters (series connection) You can only connect two media
converters in series via the FO port. A maximum of two SCALANCE XCM-100 can be
connected in series. Media converters of the SCALANCE X-100 product group cannot be
connected in series.
• Standby coupling of two redundant rings This requires redundancy-capable stations, e.g.
devices of the SCALANCE XM-400 series. You can 󹪝nd information about this application in
the next section.
Note
Adhere to the maximum permissible cable lengths for the respective devices. You can 󹪝nd
information about the maximum cable length in the section "Cable lengths (Page 53)".

Ring Topology
The following example shows an electrical ring with a SCALANCE XM408-4C as the redundancy
manager. With two SCALANCE XCM102 media converters, part of the ring can be implemented
with a 󹪝ber-optic cable.
Note
Replacement of SCALANCE X101-1 devices with SCALANCE XCM102
If you want to replace SCALANCE X101-1 or SCALANCE X101-1LD devices with SCALANCE
XCM-100 type devices in a ring topology, you can only exchange the devices in pairs. Mixed
operation of SCALANCE X101-1 or SCALANCE X101-1LD with SCALANCE XCM-100 type devices
is not possible. SCALANCE X101-1 and SCALANCE X101-1LD devices use a proprietary protocol
to exchange link status information, which is not supported by SCALANCE XCM-100.

Device description 5
5.1 Purpose
The devices of the SCALANCE XCM-100 product group enable cost-e󹪜ective setup of Industrial
Ethernet networks with media transitions. The use of a SCALANCE XCM-100 Media Converter is
especially recommended for the following tasks:
• In a network with twisted pair cables, a connection is to be made with 󹪝ber-optic cables, but
the device in question does not have an FO port.
• In a redundant ring with twisted pair lines, a section is to be implemented with 󹪝ber-optic
cables. This requires the two media converters to be connected in series, which is possible
with devices of the SCALANCE XCM-100 product group.
• A device without FO port should be integrated into a network segment with 󹪝ber-optic cables.

5.4 Scope of delivery
The following parts are included in the scope of delivery of the SCALANCE XCM-100 Media
Converter:
• One SCALANCE XCM-100 Media Converter
• One 2-pin plug-in terminal block (signaling contact)
• Two 3-pin plug-in terminal blocks (power supply and ground connection)
WARNING
Do not use any parts that show evidence of damage
If you use damaged parts, there is no guarantee that the device will function according to the
speci󹪝cation.
If you use damaged parts, this can lead to the following problems:
• Injury to persons
• Loss of the approvals
• Violation of the EMC regulations
• Damage to the device and other components

LED "A" (red alarm LED)
The "A" LED indicates an alarm status of the device.
LED color LED status Meaning
Red Lit SCALANCE XCM-100 detects and error. At the same time, the signaling contact opens.
The following faults/errors are detected:
1. Link down event on a monitored port.
2. Loss or shortfall of the power supply below 14 V on one of the two power supplies.
-O󹪜 No error detected by the SCALANCE XCM-100.
LEDs "P" (green/yellow port LEDs)
The port LEDs indicate the status of the ports or the fault mask.
