1 Application
The gray scale flat panel display
SMD 21300 CS

has been specially designed for medical diagnostics. The display is available for
ceiling suspension (CS) and as a desktop version (D). The two displays differ in
that the desktop version is supplied together with a stand and cable.
The display has the following features which permit a wide range of applications:
Perfect picture reproduction resulting from LCD technology
Distortions in the image geometry are not present because of the use of LCD
technology.
The flat panel display provides a flicker-free picture even with low refresh rates
(60 Hz). The display thus fulfills even the strictest ergonomic requirements.
The flat panel display has a TFT display module with a very wide viewing angle.
The use of a monochrome panel means that a high picture brightness is possible.
Modification of gray scale setting
The reproduction properties can be optimally adapted using the VOSD (Virtual
OnScreen Display) or the SMfit ACT®(Automatic Calibration Tool) software tool.
Compact design
Low weight, small size, low power consumption and low dissipated heat make the
flat panel display SMD 21300 preferable to conventional CRT monitors.

2 Safety precautions
Correct and safe operation of the display is dependent on proper transport,
storage, installation and assembly, as well as careful operation and maintenance.
The unit must only be used for applications normally requiring a display. The
information in the Section "Technical data" must be observed exactly.
In the following, Users refer to medical personnel (e.g. radiology technician,
medical technician), and Servicing refers to specifically trained and authorized
personnel (e.g. hospital technician, manufacturer of medical equipment).
For the sake of safety, the following precautions must be observed:

Danger
There is a danger to life if the warning information is not observed.
Severe personal injury or damage to property may occur.
Do not open the monitor yourself
Certain components inside the units are at high-voltage, i.e. touching these
components presents a danger to life!
Only use a perfect power supply cable
A damaged power supply cable may result in a fire or electric shock. When
disconnecting the power supply cable, always do so by holding the plug.
Do not insert any objects into the housing
Objects inserted into the housing may result in damage to the unit or personal
injury.
Do not place any objects on top of the units
Penetrating liquids may result in a fire or electric shock.
Connection
No contact to a patient must be possible when handling the connection cables.

Caution
Incorrect installation may result in extensive damage to property.
Installation must be carried out by specialists:
1. When installing your medical electrical system with our products in an
environment with patients, please observe the safety requirements of
IEC 60 601-1 and its corresponding national translation for "Specifications for
the safety of medical electrical systems" in order to prevent injury to patients
and users of your systems.
2. Use appropriate measures to ensure that the leakage currents in particular
remain below the necessary limits:
Appropriate measures are:
− Disconnecting devices for signal input or signal output unit
− Use of a safety isolating transformer
− Use of the additional PE conductor connection
3. During installation, only use cables recommended by the manufacturer.
4. Use power supply cables with PE contact. Only insert into sockets with PE
contact.
5. For certain applications, the video earth can be connected to the PE via the
additional PE connection in the plug panel (observe IEC 601-1).
6. Close the plug panel using the provided cover, and lock with the screw.
Notice for users:
The closed terminal panel must not be opened by the user.
Servicing information:
If housing components have to be removed for servicing, this must not be
carried out in the presence of the patient, user, or other persons not involved
with servicing.
7. The following applies to installations in the USA and Canada:
Molded power supply plugs must comply with the requirements for "hospital
grade attachments" CSA Std. C22.2 No. 21 and UL 498.
Caution
Failure to observe the warnings may result in substantial damage to
property.
Do not subject the unit to unnecessary shocks
Take care when transporting! Use the original packaging! The panel in particular
should be protected against shocks.

3 Scope of delivery

Note
It is recommendable to keep the packaging material for subsequent transport of
the unit.

4 Installation and assembly
Distances
The unit should be positioned on a hard, level and horizontal surface. It should be
positioned at least 10 cm at the side and rear from a wall or 15 cm from other
units. Several displays can be butt-mounted horizontally and vertically .
Mounting of unit
With ceiling mounting (VESA adapter / 100 x 100 mm) or installation with the stand,
proceed as follows:
• Hold the display on the VESA adapter or stand, and secure with screws.
• The display may only be aligned in portait format.
Since the screws are extremely significant for the installation, observe the
following:

Provide adequate ventilation
Ventilation holes are located on the rear of the housing.
Ambient temperature
The ambient temperature must not fall below or exceed the permitted values.
Minimize reflections
The unit should be positioned so that reflections of lights, windows, pieces of
furniture with shiny surfaces or light-colored walls do not appear on the screen.
Minimize mirroring
In order to reduce mirroring on the unit, only use reflected light (non-dazzling) for
the ceiling lighting.
Mirroring can only be eliminated if the screen is clean and free of grease (see
Section 6.2 "Cleaning").
Change of environment
If the unit is brought into a warm environment from a cold one, water may
condense in it. The unit should not be switched on until all the condensed water
has evaporated again, including that inside the unit. This may take several hours,
depending on the conditions.

5 Connections and startup
!
Caution
In order to ensure safe operation of the equipment, close attention must be paid to
the information contained in this Instruction Manual as well as the warnings in
Section 2 "Safety precautions".
Note
All screening precautions contained in the corresponding EMC guidelines must be
observed. If these guidelines are not observed, interference signals could
penetrate the display.
Information on cable installation
• Only screened cables are permitted for the signal connections.
• All plug connections must be screwed tight or locked if the corresponding facility
is present on the connector.
• Signal and power cables must not be routed in the same duct.
• The unit must not share a power supply with motors or valves (glitches!).
In order to start the unit properly, the following steps should be carried out in the
given sequence.
5.1 Connecting the power and signal cables
5.1.1 Position of connections
The power supply and DVI connections are located in the connection panel at the
rear of the display under a cover.

Caution
The cover of the connection panel must only be opened for servicing.
While the cover is opened, no patients may be present in the vicinity.
The cover is closed using a screw.
The serial interface is freely-accessible next to the cover of the connection panel.
This 6-contact mini-DIN socket is provided for connection of the ambient light
sensor, the serial luminance meter, the serial spot meter or a notebook/PC for
servicing purposes.
Caution
No other units may be connected to the service socket. Connection or
disconnection of a unit may only be carried out by servicing personnel or those
trained by them. A notebook, serial spot meter or serial luminance meter must not
be connected in the presence of patients.

5.1.2 Power supply connection
Check the permissible voltage range before connecting the display (see Section
9.2).
Caution
Only use the power cable supplied in the delivery, or a cable with PE conductor
and appliance socket to DIN 49 547, IEC 320 (max. length 3 m, cable e.g.
H05VV-F 3x1.0 mm2). Furthermore, the cable must correspond to the safety
regulations of the specific country.
Information for installations in the USA and Canada:
Molded power supply plugs must comply with the requirements for "hospital grade
attachments" CSA Std. C22.2 No. 21 and UL 498.
Caution
Equipment fuses should only be exchanged by authorized service stations,
because the failure generally originates from a defect of the display.
The power supply to the display is connected using an appliance plug.
5.1.3 DVI connection
The display has a single-link DVI-D connection. Use the supplied cable or another
high-quality cable. The picture quality, noise immunity and radiated interference of
the complete system depend on the cable quality and length.
5.1.4 Connection procedure

Caution
The display can be tilted. When handling, it is possible that the display could tip
down, catching parts of your body between housing and stand.
• Place display on a stable, horizontal surface
• Remove rear panel from stand
• Loosen screw of connection panel, and remove panel cover
• Insert appliance plug through opening in the stand, and plug in at the display
• Insert DVI plug through opening in the stand, plug in and screw tight
• Position cover onto connection panel, and tighten screw
• Secure rear panel onto stand again.

5.2 Serial interface
The display has a serial RS 232 interface with 6-contact mini-DIN socket. The
following units may be connected to the socket:
− Ambient lighter sensor for the SMD display range (permissible in patient
environment)
− Serial luminance meter with adapter from 9-contact Sub-D to 6-contact mini-
DIN socket *)
− Serial spot meter with adapter from 9-contact Sub-D to 6-contact mini-DIN
socket *)
− Notebook/PC with zero modem cable and adapter from 9-contact Sub-D to 6-
contact mini-DIN socket *)
*) Service mode! Not permissible in presence of patients.
5.3 Switching on the display and PC
The display and PC can be switched on in any order (requirement: PC and display
connected by means of DVI cable, and graphics card supports the DDC channel).
Switching displays on before PC:
• Switch on all displays.
The operation LED now lights up orange.
• Switch on the PC.
The operation LED lights up green respectively flashing green, and the picture
is visible on the display.
Switching PC on before displays:
• Switch on the PC.
• Switch on all displays.
The operation LED now lights up green respectively flashing green.
Note:
If the operation LED does not light up green, check the system according to
Section 8 "Fault diagnostics".
5.4 Adjustments on the graphics card
When switching on the PC, the properties of the display are read via the DDC
channel, and the parameters of the graphics card are set automatically. A
requirement is that the graphics card also supports the DDC channel. This is also
the case if the display is switched off. Further settings are not necessary.
The information provided by the manufacturer of the graphics card must be
observed.

5.5 Screen saver
• A screen saver function should be used in order to reduce "image sticking"
which can occur in TFT displays.
Image sticking is the effect where a faint image of the previous screen contents can
still be seen after the display contents have changed. By using a screen saver with
permanently changing screen contents, unnecessary effects of the same image are
avoided.

6 Adjustments
6.1 Overview
All displays are optimally set in the factory so that no adjustments are usually
necessary. If adjustments to the settings are nevertheless required, they can be
made using the VOSD and SMfit ACT (V3.0 or later) program.
The VOSD program is supplied for each display as a Windows version on CD.
It includes a part of the functionalities of SMfit ACT. SMfit ACT must be ordered
separately.
Install VOSD according to the description in the Readme.txt file on the CD.
The program has two display levels: user and servicing. In the user level, only a
portion of the functions are seen which are available in the servicing level. The
servicing level can be selected by entering a password.
6.2 Explanations for program description VOSD
(U) = user Mainly data can be read and test patterns displayed.
(S) = servicing This level is only for authorized servicing personnel, and a
number of menu items are output in addition to the user level.
All settings can be made here. This level is passwort
protected.
Bold type Menu title
ÆIdentifies a submenu which cannot be directly called from the
menu bar.

7 Operation
7.1 Switching on the display and PC
• Switch on all displays and the PC (note: any switch-on sequence)
• The operation LED now lights up green permanently.
7.2 Cleaning
Caution
Care of unit / cleaning agents
• The front panel is extremely sensitive to mechanical damage. Avoid all
scratches, knocks etc.!
• Remove water drops immediately; extended contact with water discolors the
surface.
Clean the front panel when dirty using a microfiber cloth and, if necessary, a glass
cleaning agent. Only clean housing parts using the recommended cleaning agents.

7.3 Maintenance
The displays require little maintenance. Only the illumination properties slowly
change due to aging of the LCD unit and the backlight. Therefore the display
settings must be checked at regular intervals by servicing personnel according to
the regulations, and corrected as necessary.
The serial luminance meter and the serial spot meter are possible as measuring
instruments. Both units can be directly connected to the display.
The adjustment can be carried out automatically using the SMfit ACT program,
version 3.0 or later.
The settings can also be carried out manually using the serial spot meter and the
VOSD program.
