1ProductOverview
1.1 Introduction
TheINNOVASONICPORTABLEUltrasonicLiquidFlowMeterconsistsofaflowsensor(twoultrasonic
transducers), aflowtransmitterandaPersonalDigitalAssistant(PDA).
TheModel210 INNOVASONICPORTABLEUltrasonicFlowmeterisastate-of-the-artuniversaltransit-time
flowmeterdesignedusingSLSItechnologyandlow-voltagebroadbandpulsetransmission.Whileprincipally
designedforcleanliquidapplications,theinstrumentistolerantofliquidswiththesmall amountsofair
bubblesorsuspendedsolidsfoundinmostindustrialenvironments.The210 INNOVASONICPORTABLE
featuresmanyadvantages:
1. DesignedusingSLSItechnologytoofferyousuchadvantagesasminimizedhardware,low
operatingvoltage,multipulsetransmission,lowpowerconsumption,highreliability,
enhancedadaptabilityandreasonableprotectionagainstinterference.Optimizedintelligent
signalself-adaptingprocessingfunctioneliminatestheneedforcircuit adjustment

programofthe210 INNOVASONICPORTABLE,you canperformdataacquisitionand
processingconveniently.UsingthePDA,youcanalsoperformsuchoperationsasbrowsing
thecollecteddata,makingstatisticalanalysis, displayinggraphs,etc.ThePCapplicationsof
the210 INNOVASONICPORTABLEmakeiteveneasiertoimplementtheabove
operationsorprintdatatables.

loggingonthescene.
4. Clear,user-friendlyoperatinginterface.Thefully-windowedsoftwaresuppliedwiththis
instrumentallowsuserstosetparametersortypeseasily,includingBritishorMetric
measurementunits,pipesize, pipematerial, wall thickness, fluidtype,outputsignal, etc.The
setup guideofthePDAmakesit moreconvenientforuserstoconfigurethesetup parameters,
displaysettingsandoutputsettings.Insteadofmemorizingalargenumberofcommands,
youcancompletetheseconfigurationssimplybyfollowingtheinstructionsonthescreen.
Differentsettingscanbesavedasdifferentfilesthatcanberecalledeasily.
5. Easytoinstall,small insizeand easilyportable.Pluginstereo-typeconnectorsmakecable
connectionseasy.Thisproductissmall insizeand lightinweightsupporting
battery-poweredoperation.Itsbuilt-inandstandbypowersupplycanprovideelectricityfor

7. The210 INNOVASONICPORTABLEusesatimemeasurementcircuit withhighresolution
(upto0.04nS),highlinearityand highreliabilitythat,togetherwithitsbuilt-in32 bitdigital
processor,ensureshigherresolutionandawidemeasuringrange.Itcanbeusedinvarious
industrieslikewatersupplyandtreatment,powersupply,districtheating, mining,petroleum,
chemistry, foodprocessingandsoforth. Itstypicalapplicationsinclude:
a) Flowmeasurementofanyhomogeneousliquidthatiscapableoftransmittingsonicwaves,
suchaswater,sewage,seawater,acidandalkalineliquid,edibleoil,dieseloil,crudeoil,
alcohol, beer, etc.
b) Applicationsinpowerplantsorthermalpower,heating,metallurgy,mining,petroleum,
chemistry, food, pharmaceutical, andothersectionsoftheindustry.
c) Applicationsinenergyefficiencytesting,watermanagement,flowracking,computerizedflow
management,networksystemmonitoring andsoforth.

Thedistribution offluidvelocityinapipevarieswiththecross-section,withtheflowvelocityatthecenterof
thepipefasterthanthevelocitynearthepipewall.Thedistributionoffluidvelocityinapipecanbeshownin
asavelocitydistributioncross-sectionaldiagram.Basedonthemathematicalmodelofthecross-sectional
velocitydistributioninthepipeand thesettingsoftheflowmeter,averagevelocitycanbecalculated,andthen
thevolumetricflowcanbecalculatedaccordingtotheaveragevelocityofthemediumandthecross-sectional
areaofthepipeline.

3.1 Batterycharging
Once theinstrumentisdeterminedtobecomplete,locatethechargersforboththePalmandtheElectronics
unit.Place bothunitsonchargeuntilthePalmBatterystatusindicatesfullychargedandtheLEDonthe
ChargerfortheElectronicsunit glowsgreen.IftheElectronicsChargerLEDglowsred,thenit isnotfully
charged.

3.1.1 Turningthe210 InnovaSonicOn
The210 INNOVASONICPORTABLErunsaself-diagnosticsprogramafterapowerup.If it detectsany
failure,theerrormessageassociatedwiththefailurewill bedisplayed(see Troubleshooting).Oncethe
self-diagnosticsprocess iscompleted,theinstrumentstartsworkingautomaticallywiththeparametersthat
wereenteredduringthelastsetup.

Since the210 INNOVASONICPORTABLEusesoverlapprocessinginternallywithtime-sharingtechnology,
operatingthekeypad(thekeypaddisplayedonthePDAscreen)willnotaffectthemeasurementprocess.
Measurement,computing,keyboardinput,displaying,printing,serialportoperationandinput/outputare
referredas events”,eachofwhichworksindependently.Forexample,user’smodificationofdateandtime
will notaffectothertasksnotrelatedtodateand time.
If theinstrumentisproperlyinstalled,it entersintonormaloperationmodewhenthepoweristurnedon,and
an ”*R”isdisplayedon thetopleft-handcornerofthescreen.
Whenusingtheinstrumentforthefirsttimeorinstallingit atanewlocation,parametersforthenewlocation
mustbeinput. Theinstrumentwill permanentlyholdtheseparametersuntil theusermodifiesthem.
Whenthetransducerisremovedorany parameterischanged,theinstrumentreadjustsitssettings
automaticallytoworkwiththenewparameters.
Wheninservice,theinstrumentalwayscompletesitstaskssimultaneously,regardless ofthedisplaywindow
wherethetaskisperformed.Tasksincludingmeasurementandoutputarecarriedoutnormally. Eachtimethe
unit ispoweredon, theinstrumententersintothedisplaywindowit displayedwhenlastpoweredoff.
Toensureafastercommunicationsetup,enterthePalmHomeDesktopbeforepowering offthePalm.When
thePalmisturnedonagain,it will comebacktotheDesktop,allowingtheusertoselecttheSierra
Instruments210 InnovaSonicProgram.
3.2 EstablishingBluetoothcommunications
Once theunit isfullycharged,you arenowreadytocommence theconfigurationsetupforyourspecific
application.Inordertoaccomplishthis,youmustfirstestablishBluetoothCommunicationsbetweenthe
PalmandtheElectronicsunit.
1. TurntheElectronicsuniton. ObservetheREDLEDPowerlightilluminate.Thismustbein
sequence,theElectronicsSHALLbeturnedonFIRST,thenthePalm.Failuretodosointhissequence
couldresult inalackofBlueToothCommunications.
2. TurnonthePalm.ObservethePALMBootupSequence.Theunit will thenautomaticallylaunch
theSierra210InnovaSonicsandsearchforBlueToothdevices.Itmayshowalistofcompatible
devicestocommunicatewith.SelecttheFLOWXXXdevice iftherearemultipledeviceslisted.It
will thenestablishcommunicationsandyou shouldobservetheGreen/AmberRunlightonthe
Electronicsflashingwhilecommunicating…

IntheeventthataData Windowappearsaskingfora Password, enterthepassword of1234. Thiswill
unlocktheunitandallowcommunicationsto proceed.
ShouldthePalmnotdiscovertheElectronicsunit, youwill see thefollowing screens.Simplyfollowthe
stepsbelowandyouwill beguidedto re-establishing communications.
Note
TherangeoftheBluetoothCommunicationsisafunctionofthelevelofbatterylifein
bothdevices.Initially,withafullychargedPalmand Electronics,theBluetoothwith
haveafunctioningrangeofapproximately30 feet.Asthechargedepletes,therange
may also decrease.

bypressing theMENUand 1”, 1”keysonthePalm.

Usingthesameprocedureasabove,withtheWall Thickness data,enterthePipeWall thickness andthen
continuewiththeDownArrowuntil youhavereachedtheTransducerspacingdatawindow.Atthispoint
youareready toinstall thetransducers.Ensurethatyou haveenteredthecorrectdataforeachofthesedata
windows;

3.5 TransducerMounting Methods
Fourtransducer-mountingmethodsareavailable.Theyarerespectively:Vmethod,Zmethod, Nmethodand
Wmethod.TheVmethodisprimarilyusedon small diameterpipes(DN100~300mm, 4”~12”).TheZmethod
isusedinapplicationswheretheVmethodcannotworkduetopoorsignalornosignaldetected. Inaddition,
theZmethodgenerallyworksbetteronlargerdiameterpipes(overDN300mm, 12”)orcastironpipes.
TheNand Wmethodsarenotcommonlyused. Theyareusedonsmallerdiameterpipes(<DN50mm, 2”).
3.5.1 TransducerSpacing
Thespace betweenthefrontedgesofthetwotransducersisconsideredasthestandardtransducerspacing.
Afterenteringtherequiredparameters,checkthedatadisplayedinWindowNo.25 andspacethetransducers
accordingly.Therearetwosmallpointersonthesidesofthetransducerracks.Thespacing isfrompointto
pointasshownbelow.

3.5.2 TransducerMountingInspection
Checktoseeifthetransducerisinstalledproperlyandifthereisanaccurateand strongenough ultrasonic
signaltoensureproperoperationandhighreliabilityofthetransducer.Itcanbeconfirmedbycheckingthe
detectedsignalstrength, totaltransit time, deltatimeaswell astransit timeratio.
The mounting”conditiondirectlyinfluencestheflowvalueaccuracyandsystemreliability.Inmostinstances,
applyingawidebeadofsoniccouplingcompound lengthwiseontheface ofthetransducerand stickingitto
theoutsidepipewall will givegoodmeasurementresults.However,thefollowinginspectionsstill needtobe
carriedoutinordertoensurehighreliabilityofthemeasurement.
3.5.3 VMethod

TheVmethod isconsideredasthestandardmethod.Itusuallygivesamoreaccuratereading andisusedon
pipediametersrangingfrom25mmto400mm (1~16”)approximately.Also,it isconvenienttouse,butstill
requiresproperinstallation ofthetransducer,contacton thepipeatthepipe’scenterlineandequalspacingon
eithersideofthepipe.

3.5.4 ZMethod
ZmethodispreferablewhennormaloperationwithVmethod isnotpossibleduetopoorsignal
reception causedbylargediameterpipe,heavyscaledepositsontheinnerpipewall andtheliner,
orthepresence ofsuspendedsolidsinthefluid.WhenZmethodisused,soundistransmitteddirectly
throughthepipelinewithoutanytraverse(alsoreferredtoassinglebeampathdistance),andsignalloss is
minimized.
Zmethodisusedonpipediametersover200mm (8”), Zmethodisrecommendedforactualinstallation.
