SERVICE AND OPERATION INFORMATION
1785, 1788, & 1792 AIR VALVE SEAT GRINDERS
LUBRI ATION: Before first use and daily thereafter, pour a small amount (10-20 drops) of SIOUX air motor oil #2 into the air inlet.
Remove oiler filter cap in the handle and drop in approximately 20 drops of oil into the cotton in the oil chamber. If the tool is in continu-
ous use, fill in the above manner every four hours.
Sioux Lubricator No. 1645M set to 1/2 to 1 drop per minute is recommended for production use of the grinder.
Excessive oil may collect on the wheel and pause loading. If this happens, it is evidence of the use of excessive amount of oil.
AIR SUPPLY: An air compressor of at least 2 horsepower with 3 C.F.M. delivery at 100 P.S.I. is recommended. The air receiver
should be at least 40 gallon capacity.
Pipe and pipe fittings from the compressor should be 1/2" pipe. The leader hose should be 3/ " with no fittings smaller than 9/32" in
diameter.
OPERATION: Before operation, drain water from the air compressor tank and blow condensation from all air lines. Use of air filters,
regulators and lubricators is recommended.
For information on grinding valve seats, refer to Valve Seat Grinding Instructions, a copy of which is attached.

1788LX Hose Support when used on the 1650 Head enter: The LX tool is supplied with (1) 41324 Spring, (1) 1436 O-ring,
(1) 40133 Hanger, and (1) 40131 S-hook to provide proper support for the air hose and assure that the air hose will not hinder the
work area.
The hanger attaches the tool to the balancer. Attach S-hook to trolley, place the O-ring over the exhaust, tube, and connect the two with
the spring. Adjust the O-ring location to obtain proper hose support. The combination will keep the tool and hose in the position desired
by the operator without having a strong pulling force on the tool. Some adjustment can be made on the balancer if desired.

1. Check the wheel for damage before mounting, such as chips
or cracks. Handle wheels carefully to avoid dropping or
bumping. Protect wheels from extremes of temperature and
humidity. Check wheels immediately after and unusual oc-
currence, which may damage wheels. Check wheels daily.
Refer to latest edition of ANSI B7.1. Damaged wheels can
explode.
2. Check the speed printed on the wheel. Printed speed must
never be less than the nameplate speed of the grinder and the
actual speed of the grinder as measured with a tachometer.
3. Be certain that all wheels and related equipment are in good
shape, the proper ones for the type and size of wheel being
used, and are securely fastened.
4. Remove wrenches: form habit of removing items before tool
is turned on.
5. Provide protection when starting up a new wheel, a used
wheel that has been remounted, or at the beginning of an
operation. Run at operating speed in this protected area for
at least one minute before applying work, during which time
no one shall stand in front of or in line with the wheel.
6. If the normal sound of the grinder changes, shut it off
immediately and check speed with tachometer. Tool could
be overspeeding.
7. Avoid accidental starting: be sure actuator is off before
hooking tool up to air supply.
. Grinders are to be operated on clean, moisture free air at a
pressure not exceeding 90 P.S.I. (6.2 bars) at the tool. The air
is to be filtered and oiled. See instructions supplied with this
tool for lubrication instructions. If tool has a governor, dirt -and
rust can cause the governor valve to stick in the open position
and cause overspeeding.
9. Daily check the speed of the grinder. If the speed is higher
than the name, plate speed, check for excessive air pressure

is acceptable, the tool must be repaired by qualified mechan-
ics who work in clean areas, recognize worn parts, and the
need of moving parts to be lubricated. Worn governor parts
must be replaced.
10. Do not drop the end of the hose on the floor where it will pick
up dirt and transport it into the tool.
11. Use safety glasses: protect your eyes. Protect nearby people
with appropriate shields.
12. Do not breathe grinding dust. Use approved mask or proper
ventilation.
13. Do not wear clothing or articles which can catch on rotating
parts.
14. Secure work: use clamps or vise to hold work. Its safer than
using your hand and it frees both hands to operate tool.
15. Dont overreach: Keep proper footing and balance at all
times.
16. Keep work area well lighted and clean: Cluttered areas and
benches invite accidents.
17. Disconnect tool from air line when not in use and before
servicing.
1 . Use common sense-remember this is a powerful tool-use
with caution.
19. Maintain the tool in good working condition. Keep tools clean
for best and safest performance.
20. AUTION: An accessory not provided or specified by SIOUX
TOOLS IN . which is used with this tool may be hazardous.
21. Repair tools at an Authorized Sioux Service Center.
WARNING: Under improper conditions of use and wear, air grinders can be dangerous and result in serious injuries, and even death
from exploding wheels. The following instructions are important and should be followed explicitly but cannot cover all contingencies.
Good judgment is always required.
AUTION: Before placing the tool in operation, the foreman and operator are cautioned to study and FOLLOW all instructions with
special emphasis on safety. The foreman and safety director must be acquainted with and follow the requirements of the applicable
sections of ANSI B1 6.1 SAFETY CODE FOR POTABLE AIR TOOLS AND ANSI B7.1 SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE USE,
CARE, AND PROTECTION OF ABRASIVE WHEELS.
