ZETA Series
GPRS/UMTS/LTE Terminal with GPIO
This document is intended to provide guidance when adding a modem from the
ZETA series to your system.
The ZETA series of GPRS/UMTS/LTE M2M modems are an advanced range of
high performance modems developed for easy integration into existing systems
and for embedded application development.
The ZETA modem range is based on the Telit xE910 GPRS/UMTS/LTE module
series and is available with or without GPS. The modem manages the module
power up sequence and can be programmed to perform additional custom tasks.
This document* discusses the modems states and modes of operation in addition
to the electrical characteristics of the modems interfaces.
Introduction
*This manual doesn’t cover the ZETA-N-GPRS. For technical information on the ZETA-N-
GPRS, please see the ZETA-N-GPRS Hardware Reference Manual.

AT Commands
The ZETA range of wireless modems has a GSM engine at its heart which can be
controlled via the serial interface using standard AT commands.
The AT command is an ATTENTION command and is used as a prex to other
parameters in a formatted string. The AT command combined with other parameters
can be sent to the modem with your preferred terminal emulator package (TMSTerm/
TeraTerm/HyperTerminal) and typed in manually as a command line instruction.
The wireless module is compliant with the following AT command formats:
1) Hayes standard AT command set, in order to maintain the compatibility with
existing SW programs.
2) 3GPP 27.007 specic AT command and GPRS specic commands.
3) 3GPP 27.005 specic AT commands for SMS (Short Message Service) and CBS
(Cell Broadcast Service)
4) FAX Class 1 compatible commands
5) Proprietary command set, the module family also supports a proprietary set of AT
commands for special purposes outside of the standard AT specication.
To obtain the latest AT command reference guide* with a full list of supported AT
commands, please contact your Siretta representative or alternatively visit:
www.siretta.co.uk
NOTE - This following document refers to useful AT commands throughout and offers
descriptions of how to use the AT commands with the ZETA wireless modems.
*For GPRS modems refer to the GPRS AT Command Manual, for UMTS modems refer to the
UMTS AT Command Manual.

ZETA Series
GPRS/UMTS/LTE Terminal with GPIO
This ZETA can be used in a number of applications, some examples are shown
below:
»GPIO Monitor (Monitor/Set and report on GPIO status)
»Standard RS232 modem attached to existing equipment (PC/MAC/Server etc.)
Typically connected devices are:
»PC/MAC/Linux platforms for use as modem
»Embedded (connected directly to remote equipment without a PC attached)
Operating System Connected Modem
»Internet enable a remote device with RS232 connectivity over 2.5G/3G. Internet
connectivity can be retrotted to end equipment without changing the software or
conguration of the remote device.
»Used in countries or places where broadband and WiFi is a less common method
to connect to the internet or where services are unavailable. The ZETA modem
can overcome this restriction by providing a mobile internet solution over the
GPRS/3G network.

ZETA LED Indicators
There are 3 LED outputs on the ZETA modem that can be congured simply and
easily to indicate the functional/operational state of the modem. This can be done via
software conguration.
The red status LED is driven directly by the GSM engine within the modem to indicate
GSM network registration status. Please refer to table 3 below for more information.

ZETA Series
GPRS/UMTS/LTE Terminal with GPIO
The green and blue LED’s can be controlled by the modem using the module general
purpose outputs.
The GPIO lines on the embedded module can be congured to control the LED
indicators directly. This allows the embedded modem to control the LED’s via
standard AT commands or using python to indicate modem status to the user.
Example AT Commands to Control LED Status
In the examples shown below the following AT commands can be entered on the
modem to directly control the user programmable LED’s. (The ZETA green LED is
directly connected to GPIO2 and the ZETA blue LED is directly connected to GPIO3).
AT#GPIO=2,1,1 (switch general purpose output 2 on, connected to green LED)
AT#GPIO=2,0,1 (switch general purpose output 2 off, connected to green LED)
AT#GPIO=3,1,1 (switch general purpose output 3 on, connected to blue LED)
AT#GPIO=3,0,1 (switch general purpose output 3 off, connected to blue LED)
User Programmable LED Status Control
During the power up and power down procedure the control of the blue and green
LED’s is managed by the internal CPLD. The status of the LED’s is as follows:
Power up procedure (When mains power is applied or when PWRON_IN is
enabled - Pin 4 RJ12 connector)
1) Green led ashes 300ms on / 300ms off whilst the CPLD performs the power up
process
2) After around 15-20 seconds the red LED will permanently illuminate indicating
that the modem is powered up and searching for a cellular network
3) After the modem has powered up correctly the control of the green and blue
LED’s is passed to the modem via GPIO 2 and GPIO 3 (See Example AT
Commands to Control LED Status)
Power up procedure (When PWROFF_IN is enabled - Pin 3 RJ12 connector)
1) Control of the green and blue LED’s is passes to the CPLD
2) Green led ashes 300ms on / 300ms off whilst the CPLD performs the power off
process
3) After around 5-10 seconds the red LED will go out indicating that the modem is
powered off
4) After the modem has powered off green LED’s will go out

0.5V - 42V for >0.5 seconds
Run Mode
Green LED will ash 300ms on /
300ms off then red LED will be on
continuously*
Run Mode Insert a valid SIM card On Network Red LED will ash once every 3
seconds*
NOTE - Normal Operation: When the modem is rst switched on with a valid SIM card, the
red LED will be on continuously for about 10-15 seconds (this may vary considerably) whilst
the modem searches for the network. After this period if the modem correctly registers to
the network then the red LED will start to blink once every 3 seconds indicating everything is
running correctly and the modem is registered to the network.
If the red LED is on continuously for a long period of time (more than 5 minutes) then this
suggests there may be a problem with the SIM setup, the network signal or the antenna
connection.
The current modem state and function is shown below in table 4.
*LED default state is off. Need to congure AT#SLED command to enable software control of
LED ashing state.
AT#GPIO=1,0,2
AT#SLED=2
AT#SLEDSAV
**When the command SLED=2 has been set then no activity on the red LED indicates that the
modem is powered off.
