If you do not agree to this end user license agreement (EULA), do not use the Spectra T950 library; instead,
promptly contact Spectra Logic for instructions on return of the Spectra T950 library for a refund. Any use of the
Software, including but not limited to use on the Spectra T950 library, will constitute your agreement to this EULA
(or ratification of any previous consent).
Grant of License. The Software is licensed on a non-exclusive basis, not sold. This EULA grants you the following
rights to the Software:
• You may use the Software only on the Spectra T950 library.
•Not Fault Tolerant. The Software is not fault tolerant. Spectra Logic has independently determined how to use
the Software in the Spectra T950 library, and suppliers have relied upon Spectra Logic to conduct sufficient
testing to determine that the Software is suitable for such use.
•No Warranties for the SOFTWARE. The Software is provided “AS IS” and with all faults. The entire risk as to
satisfactory quality, performance, accuracy, and effort (including lack of negligence) is with you. Also, there is
no warranty against interference with your enjoyment of the Software or against infringement. If you have
received any warranties regarding the SOFTWARE, those warranties do not originate from, and are not binding
on Software suppliers.
•Note on Java Support. The Software may contain support for programs written in Java. Java technology is not
fault tolerant and is not designed, manufactured, or intended for use of resale as online control equipment in
hazardous environments requiring fail-safe performance, such as in the operation of nuclear facilities, aircraft
navigation or communications systems, air traffic control, direct life support machines, or weapons systems, in
which the failure of Java technology could lead directly to death, personal injury, or severe physical or
environmental damage.
•No Liability for Certain Damages. Except as prohibited by law, Software suppliers shall have no liability for
any indirect, special, consequential or incidental damages arising from or in connection with the use or
performance of the Software. This limitation shall apply even if any remedy fails of its essential purpose. In no
event shall Software suppliers, individually, be liable for any amount in excess of U.S. two hundred fifty dollars
(U.S. $250.00).
•Limitations on Reverse Engineering, Decompilation, and Disassembly. You may not reverse engineer,
decompile, or disassemble the Software, except and only to the extent that such activity is expressly permitted

•Software Transfer Allowed with Restrictions. You may permanently transfer rights under this EULA only as
part of a permanent sale or transfer of the Spectra T950 library, and only if the recipient agrees to this EULA. If
the Software is an upgrade, any transfer must also include all prior versions of the Software.
•Export Restrictions. Export of the Software from the United States is regulated by the Export Administration
Regulations (EAR, 15 CFR 730-744) of the U.S. Commerce Department, Bureau of Export Administration. You
agree to comply with the EAR in the export or re-export of the Software: (i) to any country to which the U.S.
has embargoed or restricted the export of goods or services, which as May 1999 include, but are not necessarily
limited to Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (including

Moving the Library
Caution: If the library is loaded with media in TeraPack® containers, it is
possible that the TeraPack containers may move within their
chambers when the library is moved. Check to make sure that
all TeraPack containers are flush in their chambers before
restarting the library. Failure to do so may cause damage to the
robotics when the robotics move.

Introduction
AboutThisGuide
This guide describes site preparation for the installation of a Spectra T950 library. It
includes precautions for safety and handling, as well as facility requirements for the
library’s environment, cabling, and placement. This guide also covers library
specifications and a checklist that helps to ensure that your site is prepared before
your library arrives at your site.
AbouttheSpectraT950Library
The Spectra T950 library is an enterprise-class library that offers the highest
capacity and performance available today in a single-frame library. Additionally, the
capacity and performance of this single library can be increased by attaching
additional frames in cascades (up to eight frames total, which includes the base
library).
The Spectra T950 library uses grouped media: that is, multiple tape cartridges are
grouped in their own container, which is used throughout the library and beyond.
The packs of cartridges are called TeraPack® cases (shown in Figure 2 on page 8).

Introduction
Each TeraPack case holds 10 LTO tapes 10 SAIT tapes, or 9 SDLT tapes. Each
cartridge in the TeraPack case is bar-coded, along with each TeraPack case itself, so
that all cartridges and TeraPack cases are unique and able to be rapidly scanned
and identified.
The Spectra T950 library inventories media using a bar code reader mounted on the
library’s Transporter, which is the robotic mechanism that handles media groups
inside the library. The bar code reader takes inventory by reading the unique bar
codes on the individual tape cartridges, as well as by reading the bar codes on the
multi-slot TeraPack cases. The library’s two TeraPack Access Ports (TAPs) provide a
practical method for inserting and removing media. TeraPack cases with integrated
dust covers provide a convenient method for storing the media in a safe, dust-free
environment.
The library supports multiple interface technologies at the same time on the same
library through Shared Library Services (SLS). You can use SLS to connect the
library to different hosts and to partition the physical library into separate logical
libraries.
The Spectra T950 library supports mixed tape drive technologies and mixed media.
It can support from 2 to 24 full-height tape drives per library frame. Depending on
the number of drives installed, the library can hold up to 950 LTO or SAIT
cartridges in a single frame. See Capacity Specifications on page 23 for more detail
on various single-frame and cascade configurations.
The library’s modular design makes it easy to upgrade capacity or performance at
any time. It has a color touch screen control panel, internal lighting, internal
temperature sensors for monitoring incoming and outgoing air temperatures, and
LEDs indicating library functions.
The library handles most equipment and power failures with features that allow it
to continue to operate and to always reliably protect your data.

Precautions

The Spectra T950 library will be installed for you by a certified Spectra Logic field
engineer. Do not attempt to install the library yourself.
LibraryPlacementPrecautions
DataCenterFlooring
The installed single-frame library can weigh up to approximately 2,156 pounds
(978 kg) when fully loaded with the maximum number of tape drives and
cartridges. Some data center floors may require reinforcement to hold this weight.
Check your site’s flooring for load-bearing specifications. The library must be
installed on hard flooring (for example, not on carpeting). Each additional frame
may weigh up to 1,500 pounds (680 kg), depending on how the frame is
configured. For details on the cascaded frames and related floor load requirements,
refer to Cascade Load Distribution on page 20.
Note: Spectra Logic is not responsible for damage caused to the library
or its surroundings if the floor is not adequately reinforced.
ElectricalCabling
All electrical cabling must meet the specifications outlined in Power on page 12.
Failure to meet these specifications could damage your library, result in data loss, or
both.
Note: Adequate electrical cabling must be completed prior to the arrival
of the field engineer on site for the library installation.

CratedLibrary
The Spectra T950 library is shipped in two separate crates: one for the library frame
and one for the library components. When you order a library cascade, each frame
of the cascade is shipped in a separate crate, and the components for each frame
are shipped in separate crates to match. If, for example, you ordered a three-frame
library cascade, you would receive a total of six crates.
The crated library can weigh from approximately 925 pounds (426 kg) to
approximately 1285 pounds (583 kg). This weight is calculated by adding the
approximate 800 pounds (363 kg) of library chassis and the approximate 125
pounds (57 kg) of the crate.
CratedComponents
The crated components can weigh up to approximately 325 pounds (148 kg). This
weight is calculated by adding the approximate 200 pounds (91 kg) of components,
TeraPack cases, and media, plus the approximate 125 pounds (57 kg) of the crate
itself. The weight varies, of course, depending on how many TeraPack cases, power
supplies, and controllers have been ordered for installation in the library, as well as
how much media was ordered.
Warning: Exercise extreme care when moving the library crate and
components crate. A forklift is required to move the crates on a
level surface. A stair crawler or other special equipment that can
handle the weight of the crates must be used to traverse
stairways.
InstalledLibrary
An installed single-frame library can weigh up to approximately 2,156 pounds (978
kg). This weight accounts for the approximate 800 pounds (363 kg) of library
chassis plus the approximate weight of all installed components. The weight varies,
of course, depending on the number of installed drives, controllers, power supplies,
etc. By adhering to the maximum weight specification, however, your site will be
prepared to handle the weight of the library at full capacity. For additional
information about the weight of multiple-frame T950s, refer to Cascade Weight on
page 20.
Once loaded with all of its tape drives, QIPs, TeraPack cases, and media, the
installed library should not be moved. If it must be moved, contact Spectra Logic
Technical Support for recommendations.

The following physical requirements apply to the location where the library will be
in operation. These requirements set the necessary parameters for successful library
operation, as well as clearances for, access to, and expansion of the main library
frame.
CablingRequirements
The library can accommodate cabling from either the bottom or the top of the
library.
Note: Proper cabling for the library must be completed prior to
installation.
DirectInternetandE-MailAccess
The Spectra T950 library offers advanced features for accessing firmware updates
directly from Spectra Logic and for monitoring and reporting library status. Spectra
Logic recommends configuring your library to use these features, although they are
not necessary for the library to function.
A direct Internet connection, optionally secured through SSL, is recommended so
that you can use the Spectra T950 library’s firmware upload features. Access to an
e-mail gateway is required to use the library’s automated monitoring and technical
support features.
Library access to the Internet and e-mail gateway requires a 10BaseT/100BaseT
copper Ethernet cable to connect to the Library Control Module (LCM). During
standard system configuration, the library’s connection is set up with the library’s
IP address, subnet, proxy server, etc.
Note: SSL and SNMP is available through the Observatory suite of
management tools, a key-enabled option.

AirQuality
The Spectra T950 library contains an air filter that keeps the inside of the library
free from particulates that might contaminate its components. Regular inspection
and replacement of the air filter is necessary to keep the library functioning at
optimal levels; Spectra Logic recommends that the filter be inspected at least once
every three months and replaced as frequently as necessary.
Altitude
The library must operate between sea level and 10,000 feet (3,048 meters).
FireProtection
It is presumed that customers’ data centers are outfitted with fire suppression
equipment. Spectra Logic recommends that the Spectra T950 library be installed
close to fire suppression equipment. To comply with the OSHA Directive for Fixed
Extinguishing Systems (General, 1910.160), the Spectra T950 library has a punch-
out in the top of its frame for the purpose of attaching a hose or nozzle from your
site’s fixed extinguishing system.
Power
The Spectra T950 library comes with dual AC power inputs. Each of these inputs
should be connected to separate circuits, which allows for failover in the event of a
power failure in one of the circuits. The table below shows the specifications for
each of the power inputs.

The following table shows the specific Spectra T950 library power cables used
different geographical areas.
The branch circuit feeding the unit should have a circuit breaker rated at 20A. The
twist lock plug is considered the disconnect for the unit. The plug must therefore
be installed in an accessible location near the unit. The cord locks provided should
be installed to keep the cords from becoming disconnected from the dual AC input

plugs. Check to make sure the library is set up so that the socket-outlet shall be
installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible.
Temperature
The library is equipped with internal fans as well as temperature sensors that
operate the fans as much or as little as is necessary in your data center
environment. These features keep the library’s internal temperature within
specifications as long as the data center environment is within specifications. The
following table outlines the necessary data center specifications.

An installed single-frame library can weigh up to approximately 2,156 pounds
(978 kg) when fully loaded with the maximum number of tape drives and
cartridges; each library cascade can add as much as 1,500 lb. (680 kg). Some data
center floors may require reinforcement to hold this weight; check your site’s
flooring for load-bearing specifications.
Note: Spectra Logic is not responsible for damage caused to the library
or its surroundings if the floor is not adequately reinforced, or if
the library is installed on soft flooring, such as carpet.
The floor where the library is to be installed must be level, and must be hard
flooring, such as cement—do not install the library on carpeting. This is particularly
important when installing multi-frame units, because all frames must be precisely
aligned.
Some accommodations can be made by the library frame levelers, which are part of
the base of the unit. Frame levelers are stationary feet that can be screwed down to
lift the unit off of its casters, keeping the library from rolling. The levelers can also
be adjusted to different lengths to level the unit on an uneven floor.

The library can be most easily serviced from the front and rear of the library. Be
sure to leave enough space to permit servicing. Spectra Logic recommends a
minimum of 24 inches (61 centimeters) of space for this.
If possible, Spectra Logic strongly recommends that you leave adequate service
access space on the right side of the library; that is, to the right when you are
looking at the front of the library. This shortens the time required for parts
replacement—hence more rapid servicing. Spectra Logic recommends a minimum
of 24 inches (61 centimeters) of space for this.
Spectra Logic recommends a working area of at least 24 inches of space around the
front, back, and right side of the unit. This presents a total space requirement of 4
feet 6.65 inches (138.8 centimeters) wide by 7 feet 7.25 inches (231.8 centimeters)
deep.
Providing 24 inches of work space on both the right and left sides of the library
allows the best service access and easy viewing of all library operations, as well as
an easier way to cascade additional frames. If 24 inches is not available for the right
or left side of the library, it must be possible to access each side by either moving
the library into an open row or moving the adjoining racks/equipment.

Multiple additional frames can be added on to the right of the primary frame,
totalling the equivalent of 8 frames. Service access requirements are shown below.

Leaving a minimum of 24 inches (61 cm) at both the right and left sides of the
cascade permits faster servicing. This space also lets you view internal library
operations in progress. If 24 inches of space is not available for either the right or
left hand side of the library, it must be possible to move the adjoining racks/
equipment to access both the right and left hand side. For more information on
recommended space requirements, see the table Total Space Requirements for a
Cascade on page 17.
The following table presents the space requirements for the cascade plus the
24 inches (61 cm) space allowance on both sides of the cascade.
By following the above recommendations for spacing, you can make the most of
the library’s many features and functions, as well have room available for future
expansion.

These specifications should be referenced to prepare for the storage, movement,
and installation of the primary library frame.
Single-FrameLibraryLoadDistribution
Load per leveler foot on a fully loaded single-frame library—i.e., 24 tape drives and
83 loaded TeraPack cases installed—is approximately 380 pounds (172 kg). This
equals approximately 254 pounds per square inch (18 kg per square cm) on each
foot.

The library’s overall height, the TeraPack Access Port (TAP) opening, and rear
access door clearances on a cascade of any size remain the same as on the single-
frame Spectra T950 library.
CascadeWeight
The following tables show the approximate weights of expansion frames—first the
weight for drive expansion frames, then the weight for media expansion frames.
These weights should be added to the weight of the primary library frame when
preparing to install a library cascade.
CascadeLoadDistribution
A fully loaded drive expansion frame—i.e., 24 tape drives and 89 loaded TeraPack
cases installed—weighs approximately 1,499 pounds (680 kg), assuming the
heavier tape drives. Load per leveler foot on a fully loaded drive expansion frame is
approximately 375 lbs. (170 kg) or approximately 251 lbs. per square inch
(18 kg per square cm), assuming even weight distribution.
