About This Guide
This document covers every aspect of administering the Spectralink 87-Series handsets, also
known as PIVOT™by Spectralink. The primary tool for administering the handsets is the CMS,
the Configuration Management System. This GUI program is opened in a browser and provides
an easy and intuitive way to configure the handsets and manage the deployment.
This guide covers the administration of the handsets using the CMS as well as information
about managing the CMS. Initial installation of the CMS and handset deployment is covered in
the Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephone Deployment Guide.
This Guide is divided into three Parts:

Select the Product Category and Product Type from the dropdown lists and then select the

Spectralink 87-Series Installation and Configuration Tool Administration Guide The SLIC tool
provides step-by-step instructions for configuring wireless settings required for the handsets to
associate with the wireless LAN.
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephone Deployment Guide The Deployment Guide provides
sequential information for provisioning and deploying the handsets. It covers deployment using
the SLIC tool and CMS as well as manual deployment.

Spectralink 87-Series Wi-Fi Security Implementation Guide Wi-Fi security prevents
unauthorized over-the-air access to network components and the sensitive data that resides
there. This Guide discusses the various method and explains how to implement each of them.
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephone Application Installation Guide The Applications Guide
provides detailed information about deploying any type of application, using an app store or
MDM and manual processes for loading applications on the Spectralink 87-Series handset.
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephone User Guide The User Guide provides detailed
information about using the features of the 87-Series handsets.

Icons
Icons indicate extra information about nearby text.
Warning
The Warning icon highlights an action you must perform (or avoid) to avoid
exposing yourself or others to hazardous conditions.
Caution
The Caution icon highlights information you need to know to avoid a hazard that
could potentially impact device performance, application functionality, successful
feature configuration and/or affect handset or network performance.

CMS hint
When you see the hint icon, you will also find a footnote on the same page that

Tip
The Tip icon highlights information that may be valuable or helpful for users to

A time-saving tip is typically used to mention or highlight a faster or alternative

Admin Tip

Troubleshooting
This element can be used in any type of document and is typically used to highlight
information to help you solve a relevant problem you may encounter, or to point to

Settings
The Settings icon highlights information to help you zero in on settings you need to
choose for a specific behavior, to enable a specific feature, or access customization
options.
Typography
A few typographic conventions, listed next, are used in this guide to distinguish types of in-text
information.

Convention
Description
Bold
Highlights interface items such as menus, soft keys, file names, and
directories. Also used to represent menu selections and text entry to the
handset.
Italics
Used to emphasize text, to show example values or inputs, and to show
titles of reference documents available from the Spectralink Support Web
site and other reference sites.
Underlined blue
Used for URL links to external Web pages or documents. If you click on
text in this style, you will be linked to an external document or Web page.
Bright orange text
Used for cross references to other sections within this document. If you
click on text in this style, you will be taken to another part of this
document.
Fixed-width-font
Used for code fragments and parameter names.
This guide also uses a few writing conventions to distinguish conditional information.
Convention
Description
<MACaddress>
Indicates that you must enter information specific to your installation,
handset, or network. For example, when you see <MACaddress>, enter
your handset’s 12-digit MAC address. If you see <installed-directory>,
enter the path to your installation directory.

Indicates that you need to select an item from a menu. For example,
Settings> Basic indicates that you need to select Basic from the
Settings menu.

Part I: Using CMS
CMS is a powerful interface for configuring and managing Spectralink 87-Series handsets. Part I
details each page of the CMS and each setting on each page.
Installing the CMS is fully covered in the Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephone Deployment
Guide. Please refer to that document if you are just getting started.
Settings: Is CMS necessary?
The question will arise if CMS is strictly necessary for configuring and managing
the handsets. The short answer is “No, not if you are deploying only a few phones.”
The handsets Settings app includes an Admin menu behind a password. This
menu can be used to manually set parameters and view handset usage data. This
document covers nearly all the settings you will find in the Admin menu. For
specific information about configuring the handsets manually see Spectralink
87-Series Wireless Telephone Deployment Guide.
The longer answer is “Yes; if you are deploying many handsets, have complex
settings such as security certificates, phone groups, etc., or if the handsets cannot
be easily retrieved for user support functions.” The CMS is a boon to Wi-Fi and IT
administrators as it can keep track of and manage any number of handsets
remotely.
Settings: Not using CMS?
If you are not deploying a CMS, please refer to Spectralink 87-Series Wireless
Telephone Deployment Guide Appendix B: Manual Configuration for the sequence
of steps to take when manually configuring the handsets.
Use this document for more complete information about the settings you have to
configure whether you are using CMS or doing it manually.

Chapter 1: Getting Started with CMS
Instructions for installing CMS are in Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephone Deployment
Guide. Please refer to that document if you are just getting started. This Chapter assumes that
you have successfully installed CMS and are ready to use it for handset provisioning.
CMS navigation follows web browser standards. This document assumes that you are familiar
with browsers and web pages and can find your way around with relative ease. We show the
navigation path for the sequence of clicks that will get you to a page that may be deeper in the
GUI. E.g. navigate to Home> CMS Administrative> Server Settings> Self Signed Public
Key. Clickable text is blue.
Saving your settings
○Save and add another allows you to save the setting you just entered and stay on
this page to add another setting.
○Save and continue editing allows you to save the setting you just entered and edit
any of the fields for this setting.
○Save will save this setting and take you back to the previous page.
Admin Tips
What user settings are saved by the CMS?
When changes are made in the Settings app on the handset, those changes are
immediately sent to the CMS. User settings such as ring tone, volumes, etc. are not
configured by the CMS but are stored by the CMS and seamlessly pushed back to
the handset when it reboots. The CMS allows both user and admin settings to be
downloaded to a different handset through the Quick RMA replacement option.
When does the handset get new settings?
New/changed settings are available to the handsets when the Save/Send Config
button is clicked. The handset will retrieve the new settings when it checks in at the
next heartbeat. If the handset is inactive when the Save/Send button is clicked, the
next time the handset checks in it will retrieve any new or changed options at its
first heartbeat.

What does the dashed line indicate?
You will see some settings that use a dashed line in the text field, such as
Enable / Disable Spectralink SIP. When you see this, it indicates that whatever the
current setting is should be retained or “use whatever is currently configured in the
handset” or in the group or enterprise level setting.
Default values are not displayed
A blank field in the CMS means that the default value in the handset is retained.
CMS does NOT display “default values”. Leaving settings as blank in the CMS
allows the handset to retain the default value, it does not “blank out” the defaults.
Admin Tip: How to capture a screen
Screen captures can be valuable training and debugging tools. Press the power
button and volume down buttons simultaneously to capture the current screen. You
will see the screen being captured. It will appear in the notification drawer where
you can share it. You can also browse to the handset via USB (Computer> [Model
#]> Internal storage> Pictures> Screenshots) and download/copy the capture.
How Secure is CMS?
CMS transfers configuration information to the handsets over the air which could expose the
data to unauthorized parties. CMS uses both HTTP and HTTPS protocols. If your facility uses
the HTTPS protocol, you can take advantage of the mutual authentication feature built into
CMS.
Mutual authentication is implemented by generating a public key on the CMS and loading it into
the handset using SLIC. This is the “server key” that ensures the handset recognizes the CMS
as genuine. The handset contains a device certificate that is loaded during manufacturing. The
CMS can recognize this key and therefore knows that the handset is genuine. Once this
authentication handshake is complete, the handset and the CMS exchange information over a
secure connection. For a comprehensive explanation of Wi-Fi security see Spectralink

HTTPS is set on the handset by setting the https://[IP address] for CMS and using SLIC to
install the CMS key. See Spectralink 87-Series Installation and Configuration Tool
Administration Guide. Encryption for CMS is set at Home> CMS Administrative> Server
Settings> General settings. These three settings are required when using HTTPS to establish
the secure tunnel.
This secure connection is not possible using HTTP.

Logging into CMS
1 Enter the IP address in your browser. Use Chrome® for best results. Microsoft® Internet
Explorer™is not compatible and must not be used.
2 Enter the username and password.
Default is admin/admin.
Installing the CMS License
You will need to install a license when you first set up CMS. Licenses are obtained from
Spectralink, sometimes through a distributor or VAR. Contact Spectralink support if you need
help obtaining a license.
Installing the license
1 The customer receives the APK (Authorization Product Key) and CMS serial number via
an email which also includes a URL.
2 Click the URL to generate the license key and register with Spectralink. Copy the license
key.
3 Open CMS and navigate to Home> CMS Administrative> Server Settings> License
for this software. Enter the serial number and paste the license key into the appropriate
fields. Click Update license.
4 CMS is now operational.

The Home Page
Major groups
Initial Setup allows you to load certificates, configure Wireless Profiles and set up over the air
(OTA) provisioning for the handsets.
Device Management allows you to view and configure devices, set up phone groups, reset
device passwords, and move a configuration to a different device when a user’s handset must
be replaced.

Tip: What is a “device”?
“Device” is the term used by Android to refer to the hardware using the Android
platform. In this document, we use the word “device” interchangeably with
“handset”.
CMS Administrative is where you set up CMS users and manage the CMS software and other
settings for the CMS server itself.

Chapter 2: Initial Setup
Certificates
Certificates are used by several different types of programs. Load and manage them on the
Certificates page. Certificates are loaded on the Wireless Profiles pages when you configure a
type of Wi-Fi security that requires a certificate.
Caution: Certificate validity
The validity of the certificate is not verified by the handset, SLIC or CMS. Ensure
you have a valid certificate before adding it to this list and trying to use it for
authentication.
Three types of certificates are identified: CA, PAC and Other. Refer to Spectralink 87-Series
Wireless Security Implementation Guide for more information on certificates and their use in Wi-
Fi security methods. Other or non-Wi-Fi certificates are available in Device Security or Home>
Device Management> Configure Device(s)> Device Security> Non-wifi Certificates.

Deleting a certificate
1 Check the certificate you wish to delete.
2 Click the Action dropdown and select Delete this certificate.
3 Go through the confirmation page to finish deleting the selected certificate(s).
Adding a certificate
1 Ensure the certificate is located where you can browse to it from the computer running
your browser.
2 Click the Add certificate button.
3 Complete the fields and browse to the certificate that you want to add to the certificate
list.
4 Click one of the Save buttons at the bottom of the screen.

Wireless Profiles
A handset may be required to associate to several SSIDs. Only one SSID is configured during
initial deployment with SLIC. Use this page to configure additional SSIDs. Wireless profiles are
added to the handset in Device Management> Configure Devices. Any SSIDs entered here
will appear on the Wireless Profiles list on that page.
Admin Tip: Roaming between SSIDs?
The handset is not designed to roam between different networks. A different SSID
usually means that the handset will need a new IP address with different network
conditions.
The handset must be rebooted to change SSIDs. Do not expect continuous
connectivity.
Installing multiple wireless profiles allows the handset to associate to a new SSID
when it is turned on at a new site.
Wireless profiles ask for the security type used by the SSID. For a full discussion of the various
security methods and how they are implemented on this page, see Spectralink 87-Series
Wireless Security Implementation Guide.
Admin Tip: SSID proxy settings
You may need to configure proxy settings to allow a handset to access the internet.
Proxy settings are configured on the handset Admin menu, not through CMS. On
the handset go to Settings> Admin settings> [Enter Password]> Wi-Fi and tap
the SSID where proxy settings are required. Tap the Modify network option. Scroll
down and tap Show advanced options. Scroll down and tap Proxy settings. Tap
Manual and enter the hostname and port.
If you are setting up a new SSID, tap Advanced options per the above.
