This manual contains important instructions for Models 6 and 10kVA UniStar VP series UPS that should
be followed during installation and maintenance of the UPS. Please read all instructions before operating
the UPS and save this manual for future reference.
READ AND FOLLOW ALL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
a. Do not use outdoors.
b. Do not route wiring across or near hot surfaces.
c. Do not install near gas or electric heaters.
d. Use caution when servicing batteries. Battery acid can cause burns to skin and eyes. If acid is
spilled on skin or in eyes, flush acid with fresh water and contact a physician immediately.
e. Unit should be installed where it will not readily be subjected to tampering by unauthorized
personnel.
f. The use of accessory equipment not recommended by the manufacturer may cause an unsafe
condition.
g. Do not use this UPS for other than intended use.
This UPS has been designed and manufactured in accordance with the standards for the product,
for normal use and for all uses that may reasonably be expected. It may under no circumstances
be used for any purposes other than those envisaged, or in any other ways than those described
in this manual. Any interventions should be carried out in accordance with the criteria and the
time-frames described in this manual.
Staco Energy is highly specialized in the development and production of uninterruptible power
systems (UPS). The UPS’s of this series are high quality products, carefully designed and
manufactured to ensure optimum performance.

This UPS contains LETHAL VOLTAGES. All repairs and service should be performed by
AUTHORIZED SERVICE PERSONNEL ONLY. There are NO USER SERVICEABLE
PARTS inside the UPS.
To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, install this UPS in a temperature and humidity
controlled, indoor environment, free of conductive contaminants. Do not operate near water
or excessive humidity (95% maximum).
WARNING
Batteries can present a risk of electrical shock or burn from high short circuit current.
Observe proper precautions. Servicing should be performed by qualified service personnel
knowledgeable of batteries and required precautions. Keep unauthorized personnel away
from batteries.
There is a risk of explosion if batteries are replaced by an incorrect type. Replace with same
type and rating only.
Proper disposal of batteries is required. Refer to your local codes for disposal requirements.
Never dispose of batteries in a fire

Company regulations and traditional procedures should be followed for any first aid intervention that may
be required.
Firefighting measures
1. Do not use water to put out a fire, but only fire extinguishers that are suitable for use with
electrical and electronic equipment.
2. If exposed to heat or fire, some products may release toxic fumes into the atmosphere. Always
use a respirator when extinguishing a fire.

1. Safety Warnings and EMC instructions
1.1 UPS Location
• Install your UPS indoors, away from excess moisture or heat, direct sunlight, dust and conductive
contaminants.
• Install your UPS in a structurally sound area. Your UPS is extremely heavy; take care when
moving and lifting the unit.
• Only operate your UPS at indoor temperatures between 32°F and 104°F (between 0°C and
40°C).
• Leave adequate space around all sides of the UPS for proper ventilation.
• Do not install the UPS near magnetic storage media, as this may result in data corruption.
• Do not mount unit with its front or rear panel facing down (at any angle). Mounting in this manner
will seriously inhibit the unit's internal cooling, eventually causing product damage not covered
under warranty.
1.2 Connections
• There is feedback protection inside.
• This UPS should be connected with properly grounded utility system (TN grounding system).
• The input source for this unit must be single-phase rated in accordance with the equipment
nameplate and must be suitably grounded.
• Use of this equipment in life support applications where failure of this equipment can reasonably
be expected to cause the failure of the life support equipment or to significantly affect its safety or
effectiveness is not recommended.
• Do not use this equipment in the presence of a flammable anesthetic mixture with air, oxygen or
nitrous oxide.
• The UPS is connected to a DC energy source (battery). The output terminals may be live when
the UPS is not connected to an AC supply.
• An external branch circuit breaker at the UPS output side is strongly recommended to provide
overcurrent protection or easy disconnection of load device.
1.3 Maintenance
• Service and repair should be done only by trained personnel. During any service work to the
UPS, it should be turned off or manually bypassed. Note that potentially lethal voltages exist
within this unit as long as the battery supply is connected.
• Your UPS power module and battery module(s) do not require routine maintenance. Do not open
them for any reason. There are no user-serviceable parts inside.
• Before carrying out any kind of service and/or maintenance, disconnect the batteries and verify
that no current is present and no hazardous voltage exists at the terminals of high capacity
capacitor such as BUS-capacitors.
• Fuses should be replaced only with fuses of the same number and type and should be replaced
only by factory authorized personnel.
• The battery circuit is not isolated from the input voltage. Verify that no voltage between the
battery terminals and ground is present before maintenance or repair. Hazardous voltages may
occur between the battery terminals and the ground.

1.4 Battery
• Do not operate your UPS without connecting it to an external battery module.
• Servicing of batteries should be performed or supervised by personnel knowledgeable about
batteries and the required precautions.
• Batteries can present a risk of electrical shock and burn from high short-circuit current. Observe
proper precautions.
oRemove watches, rings, or other metal objects.
oUse tools with insulated handles.
oWear rubber gloves and boots.
oDo not lay tools or metal parts on top of batteries.
oDisconnect charging source prior to connecting or disconnecting battery terminals.
oDetermine if battery is inadvertently grounded. If inadvertently grounded, remove source from
ground.
• Contact with any part of a grounded battery can result in electrical shock.
• The batteries are recyclable. The batteries must be deposed of correctly according to local
regulation.
• Do not dispose of the batteries in a fire.
• Do not short or bridge the battery terminals with any object.
• Unplug and turn off the UPS before performing battery replacement.
• Battery replacement should be performed only by authorized service personnel using the same
number and type of batteries (Sealed Lead-Acid). Use tools with insulated handles.
• Do not open or mutilate the batteries. Released electrolyte is harmful to the skin and eyes and
may be toxic.
• Do not connect or disconnect battery module(s) while the UPS is operating from the battery
supply.

2.1 Unpacking and Inspection
Unpack the package and check the package contents. The shipping package contains:
•(1) UPS
•(1) user manual
•(1) monitoring software CD
•(1) RS-232 cable (option)
•(1) USB cable
•(1) battery cable
•Tower type installation supporters
•Rack type installation ears
•Battery cable connection ears
Depending on what UPS is ordered, the following optional parts may be in the package:
•(1) Parallel cable
•(1) Share current cable
•(1) OP relay board
•(1) parallel board
NOTE: Before installation, please inspect the unit. Be sure that nothing inside the package is damaged
during transportation. If there is any damage or lack of parts, do not turn on the unit and notify the carrier
and factory immediately. Please keep the original package in a safe place for future use.

(1) RS-232 communication port. Connect your UPS to a workstation or server. It uses RS-232
protocol to communicate.
(2) USB communication port. Connect your UPS to a workstation or server.
(3) EPO (Emergency Power Off) connector. Connect to a contact closure switch to enable
emergency power off.
(4) Share current port. UPS balanced current control in parallel operation. (“-P” modules only)
(5) Parallel port. UPS communication in parallel operation (“-P” modules only)
(6) Intelligent slot. Optional accessories to remotely control and monitor your UPS system.
(7) EMBS (External Maintain Bypass Switch) port. Interface between UPS and EMBS
(8) Cooling fan. Ventilates the inside of the power module.
(9) External battery connector. Use this to connect battery modules to the power module.

2.5 Tower/Rack Installation
2.5.1 Tower Installation
The UPS system is shipped with four plastic feet and plastic extensions. These can be used to tower
mount the UPS power module (3U) or UPS power module and a Battery Pack (6U) or UPS power
module, ISO Pack and a Battery Pack (9U). If an ISO Pack is ordered, the extra extension can be
installed similar as in Figure 6and the Battery Pack must be installed next to the UPS.
1. For the UPS module only
a. Assemble two feet and one short extension together to make one support with 5.12in
(13cm) width. The other support can be copied in same method.
2. For the UPS and matching Battery Pack
a. Assemble the two feet and two long extensions together to make one support with 10.25in
(26cm) width. The other support can be copied in same method.
3. For the UPS, ISO Pack and matching Battery Pack
a. Assemble the two feet and three long extensions together to make one support with
15.37in (39cm) width. The other support can be copied in same method.
4. Align the two supports in your installation area, approximately 13.75in (35cm) apart.
5. Place the units on their sides in the support. The LCD of UPS should be on upper half part of front
panel after completion.
6. For the UPS and battery pack only, install flat metal bracket across the rear of the UPS and battery
packs.

2.5.2 Rack type installation
1. Attach mounting ears to the side mounting holes of UPS using the screws provided; the ears
should face forward.
2. Lift the UPS module and slide it onto the mounting shelves.
3. Attach the UPS module to the rack by passing the screws, nuts and washers (user-provided)
through mounting ears and into the rack rails.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 for the matching Battery Pack and ISO Pack.

2.6 Single UPS Installation
Installation and wiring must be set in accordance with the national and local codes.
2.6.1 UPS Input/Output Wiring
1. Ensure the input feed wire and breakers are rated for the current capacity of the UPS to avoid the
hazards of electric shock or fire. See 5.2 Nominal UPS Output Current for maximum current.
2. Remove the terminal block cover on the rear panel of UPS. Then, connect the input and output
wires according to Figure 8.
NOTE: Connect the earth ground wire first when making wire connection. Disconnect the earth
ground wire last when making wire disconnection.
NOTE 1: Make sure that the wires are connected tightly with the terminals.
NOTE 2: Install the output breaker between the output terminal and the load. The breaker should be
qualified with leakage current protection if necessary.

2.6.2 Battery Pack Installation

NOTE: Set the battery pack breaker in “OFF” position before installing the battery pack.
• Battery cable can connect to either battery connector in Battery Pack.
• If more than one (1) Battery Pack is used per UPS, subsequent Battery Packs are connected from
previous Battery Pack to next Battery Pack. It does matter which battery connector are used.
• For standard matching battery pack, there is one DC breaker to disconnect the battery pack and
the UPS. But for other external battery packs, contact your Staco Representative.
• For the 10KVA model, it may be connected to a maximum of (11) extension battery packs with
9AH batteries.
• For the 6KVA model, it may be connected to a maximum of (14) extension battery packs with 9AH
batteries.
• The battery cables are keyed to prevent accidental mis-wiring. However, verify the polarity marking
on external battery connector and make sure the correct battery polarity is connected. Wrong
connection may cause permanent damage to the UPS.

2.7 ISO Pack Installation

ISO Pack.

2.7.2 ISO Pack Output
The Transformer in the ISO Pack is an Isolation transformer. This is considered a separately derived
source and any ground bonding needs to be done according to local and national regulations.
2.7.3 120V/120V Output
There are 2 sets of 120V. Each set can carry ½ of the total UPS capacity.
Connect one load to X1-N and the other load to X3-N.
