1General information
1.1 General information on operating instructions
These operating instructions form an integral part of the SLE22 electronic control device
for the manufacturer's hoists. It is addressed to hoist manufacturers, users, operators,
commissioning engineers and service personnel.
It must be available to the machinery manufacturer's or operator's technical personnel
during the whole period of use for erection, electrical installation, configuration, commis-
sioning, maintenance and diagnosis, and be observed by them.
The safety instructions must be observed without fail.
Further safety instructions are to be found in chapter 2 of the original operating
instructions for wire rope hoists/chain hoists, and in chapter 4.8, "Electrical
equipment" further important information and e planations which must be ob-
served.

Skilled electrician
A skilled electrician possesses knowledge and experience on electrical equipment
arising from specialist training and, with knowledge of the applicable standards and
regulations, is able to assess the work with which he is entrusted and detect and avoid
possible risks. The skilled electrician must be familiar with the commissioning and
operation of the product and have been trained on it.
Definition of a qualified person:
A qualified person is one who has gained the specialised knowledge required for
testing the equipment from his/her vocational training, professional experience and
contemporary professional activity.
This person must be in a position to assess the safety of the system in conjunction with
the application. Qualified persons with the competence to undertake certain mainte-
nance work on our products include the manufacturer’s service engineers and trained
fitters with the corresponding certification.
1.7 Claims for liability for defects

1.10 Use for intended purpose

information given in the technical documentation and on the rating plate
•comprises a safety-oriented overload cut-off which in conjunction with a dual channel
load sensor (specification see hapter 3.2), while observing the corresponding stan-
dards relating specifically to machines and systems, can be used for the above-
mentioned machines or systems up to category 2, PL d, in compliance with
EN13849-1:2006.
•is a configurable system that performs its safety functions only after the safety-
relevant parameter "overload cut-off point" has been set, which may be altered by a
qualified person only.
•is used as a central safety device for overload cut-off in the control
•is used in the hoist control for activating the motor
•monitors motor temperature by means of PT thermistors
NOTICE

The circuit diagrams and block diagrams supplied with the hoist must be followed
and implemented in controls built by customers
•If control elements supplied by the manufacturer are integrated into an overall control
or superordinated SP the product standards for hoists and technical specifications
regarding functionality, signal sequence and device timing must be observed.
•The system manufacturer is responsible for the overall system.
Errors and warnings displayed must be remedied immediately. If this is not possible the
device and thus also the hoist controlled by it must be decommissioned until the fault has
been remedied.
CAUTION
Any other use or alterations to the device, including during erection and install

DANGER
Observe the safety information without fail:
•National and international directives and regulations must be observed for erection,
commissioning, operation and periodic tests, in particular the Machinery Directive
2006/42/E , the directive for the use of work equipment 89/655/EE , safety regula-
tions and relevant national safety regulations.
•The manufacturer and user of the machine or system must agree and observe all
valid safety regulations with the appropriate office on his own responsibility.
•Detailed regulations for commissioning and testing are described in chapter 5.
2.1 Requirements for installation
WARNING
For applications with the device please observe the following
information on electrical
installation:
•If it is to be installed in a control cabinet, the type of protection must be min. IP 54.
•arry out wiring in compliance with EN 60204-32.
•The load sensor cable must be shielded. The shield is connected to the ground close
to the device (ideally, directly next to the device).
•If there is an intermediate terminal on the load sensor lead, connect the shield
isolated from the ground (e.g. with a standard terminal).
Analog leads (load sensor, Temp1 and Temp2) must be routed separate from high-
voltage cables (e.g. routed separately in different channels or bundles).

•Failure must be prevented by
the designer of the control selecting appropriate devices

3.1 Description
The SLE22 is an electronic control device for hoists. The device can be used to control
pole-changing or frequency-controlled drives. It comprises a safety-oriented overload cut-
off for hoists in conjunction with a load sensor (see point 3.2.) It is a configurable system
that performs the safety function only after parameterizing and saving the safety-relevant
parameter overload cut-off point, reliably disconnecting the hoist motion.
In addition the device performs other control functions which are not safety-relevant
•Mechanical operating hours counter
•Temperature control for hoist and travel motors
•Display of system status via signal relay
•ontrol of hoist motions by motor management
3.2 Load sensor
NOTICE
The SLE22 processes loa

mA. Two independent load
sensors or a dual-channel sensor are to be connected.
The load sensor is an integral part of the prototype test of the device and is thus a safety-
relevant component. For this reason only load sensors approved by the manufacturer
must be used. If a load sensor is defective, the same type must always be ordered and
installed. The load sensors are specified by the manufacturer corresponding to the
individual hoist and load and assigned in-house. During replacement, note hapter 4.4,
Replacement of devices and sensors.
Warranty and approval of the device e pire if an unapproved sensor is installed!
WARNING
If a load sensor with two internally independent channels is used, it must be
of
two

channel design. A single fault must not cause both sensor cells to fail. See T

3.6 Safety functions
3.6.1 Overload cut-off
The overload cut
-
off is designed in accordance with performance level d, category 2, to
EN 13849-1:2006. As shown in the simplified circuit diagram, UBS supplies the first load
sensor Load1. The load sensor current is fed into l1+ and the bridge from I1- to GD
closes the circuit.
The second load sensor Load2 is supplied by UB. The load sensor current is fed into l2+
and the circuit is closed internally.
The overload cut-off disconnects in the following cases:
•If the load sensor current exceeds the set cut-off threshold while S↑ is active, the
SLE22 recognises "Overload" and disconnects K↑ and K↑↑. The outputs are dis-
abled until the overload is no longer detected.
•If the load sensor current exceeds the set cut-off threshold while outputs K↓, K↓↓ are
active or at standstill, the SLE22 recognises "Overload" after 800 ms and disables
outputs K↑ and K↑↑, until the overload is no longer detected.
Due to an internal filter function the maximum reaction time for cut-off when lifting a load
from the ground is 500 ms. The elasticity of the crane system must be taken into account
to obtain the total reaction time.
"Overload" is acknowledged when the load on the hook is less than 82,5% of maximum
working load and safety input S↑ is active for 2 seconds or the load (minimum load)
corresponds to a current value of 6 mA for 2 seconds.
Outputs K↓ and K↓↓ can be switched after an overload has been detected!
3.6.2 Sensor errors
The S
LE
22 constantly monitors and compares the values of sensor channels 1 and 2.
The following three types of sensor error are detected:
Differential error
if the difference between the sensor currents is > 6,7%, related to the set overload
cut-off point (see page 16 for definition)
•Broken cable:
If the sensor current in one or both sensor channels is < 3.3mA
•Short circuit:
if the load sensor current in one or both sensor channels is >2 .5 mA
In all three cases of sensor error output relays K↑ and K↑↑ are disabled dependent on
activation of safety inputs S↑ and S↕↕ and the incident is displayed by the device LEDs.
The maximum reaction time for disabling the outputs is:
if input S↑ is active = 950 ms
if input S↑ is not active = 1950 ms
A sensor error is acknowledged if:
•The difference between the sensor currents is <6.6%, related to the overload cut-off
point1, and
•the load sensor current is within the function limits and
•up S↑ is not activated.
Definition:
The basis for calculation is the hoist sensor current, i.e. the cut-off sensor current (at
110% load) minus the zero point current (at 0%) load.
Example: cut-off current = 13 mA; zero point current = 4.0 mA; permissible current
difference between the sensor channels <= 0.6 mA

3.7 General functions
3.7.1 Activation, relay outputs and motor management
Activation
Safety inputs S↑, S↓ and input S↕↕ are read in relation to N.
S↑ and S↓ are transmitted on two channels to both controllers in the device and evalu-
ated in accordance with category 2 performance level d.
The activation of S↕↕ is only detected if the related direction S↑ or S↓ is also active at
the same time.
If S↑ or S↓ are activated from idle state, the SLE22 switches the related safety output
K↑ or K↓ after a maximum delay time of 300 ms.
Relay outputs
The relay outputs switch the voltage connected to L↑↓ which must coincide with the
supply voltage at L.
In accordance with category 2 performance level d, the safety outputs K↑ and K↑↑ are
supplied by an internal safe circuit. In the case of a fault or at overload this circuit discon-
nects safety outputs K↑ and K↑↑ .
Safety outputs K↓ and K↓↓ are also supplied by an internal safe circuit in accordance
with category 2 performance level d.
In the case of a fault this circuit disconnects safety outputs K↓ and K↓↓ .
Safety output K↑↑ or K↓↓ is only active in conjunction with safety output K↑ or K↓ .
Motor management

Starting via slow speed ta:
If S↑ and S↕↕ are activated together, K↑ is switched first. After cut-off time ta has
expired, K↑↑ is activated.
Braking via slow speed tb:
If K↑ and K↑↑ are active, K↑↑ is switched off after activation of S↑ and S↕↕ K↑↑ is
switched off. After the expiry of braking time tb, K↑ is also no longer activated.

If S↑ or S↕↕ are not active, K↑ or K↑↑ are no longer activated. If S↑ or S↕↕ are switched
again directly afterwards, K↑ or K↑ and K↑↑ are activated after expiry of the cut-off time

3.7.2 Mechanical operating hours counter
The device counts the total operating hours.
They are shown on the operating hours
counter mounted on the front.
•If motor management for frequency inverter operation is selected, the operating
hours counter starts to count as soon as the hoist motor is activated.
•If motor management for a pole-changing motor is selected, the operating hours
counter starts to count as soon as the hoist motor is activated.
3.7.3 Temperature control for hoist and travel motors

The hoist motor temperature is constantly monitored. If the motor ptc thermistor (input

Installation must be performed by a skilled electrician. The maximum values for tighten-
ing torques given in EN ISO 898-1 must be observed for all screws.
All screws must be checked for firmness and tightened if necessary at every mainten-
ance, at least once a year.
4.4 Replacement of device or sensor

After a device or load sensor has been replaced by a
qualified person
a complete
commissioning test (see chapter 5: ommissioning and testing) must be repeated and the
reading of the operating hours counter of the device which has been replaced recorded in
the crane logbook.

DANGER
Commissioning and testing may only be performed by a qualified person
following
the "Servicing instructions of the original operating instructions".
5.1 Commissioning and periodic tests
NOTICE
The person commissioning must have all necessary information on system and device.
Testing must comprise the correct interaction of the device with the hoist control, the
safe status and position in relation to statutory standard operating procedures and safety
regulations relating specifically to the equipment (directives, product standards, regula-
tions / information from the Employers' Liability Insurance Associations.)
The test results must be recorded in writing in a report signed by the person performing
the tests. The report must be filed where the machine or system is situated.
The following types of test are distinguished:
a) Tests before first commissioning and after alterations (acceptance tests)
A test must be performed before the first commissioning of the SLE22 and after
alterations to the SLE or to components or units affecting the safety function.
Regarded as alterations are all alterations to wiring, control, configuration, para-
meterization of the SLE and related components or units affecting the safety
function. The test must determine that the requirements for hoists are met when
using the SLE22 and that correct functioning of the components or units affecting
the safety function in interaction with the SLE22 is ensured. In addition, the type
of use / mounting of the SLE22 and the braking path of the system are to be
tested.
Acceptance test: overload cut-off:
Lifting a test load of 110% maximum working load. The device must detect the
overload at the latest when the load has been lifted completely off the ground,
and disconnect the hoist motion. In accordance with DIN EN 14492-2: 2010-05
an overload must not be lifted over a distance of more than the maximum rated
hoisting speed multiplied by 1s.
b) Periodic tests
Periodic tests serve to detect systematically and eliminate safety-related faults
(e.g. due to alterations or manipulations) on the system's protective equipment
occurring after commissioning. To comply with §3 clause 3 of the Ordinance on
Safety in Operation, type, extent and time limits must be ascertained and laid
down by the user in relation to the specific equipment. An inspection interval of at
least once a year has proved appropriate. Shorter test intervals may be neces-
sary for multi-shift operation, heavy duty, adverse ambient conditions or to comp-
ly with national regulations.
This test comprises inter alia testing the overload cut-off point with a test load of
110% maximum working load, a safety check of the correct functioning of the
SLE22 and the interaction of the SLE22 with components or units relating to the
safety function. In addition it includes checking that the limit value given for over-
run is not exceeded.

5.2 Crane test
DANGER
When commissioning a hoist a so
-
called crane test must be performed in accordance with
its original operating instructions. To enable this, the " rane test" function can be acti-
vated, raising the overload cut-off point.
The "Crane test" function may only be activated for the purpose of this test by a
qualified person in the presence of an authorized crane e pert.
The crane runway and the crane bridge are tested with a load of 125%.
The " rane test"
function can be activated to permit this test. After this function has been activated, the
cut-off point is raised to 137.5% maximum working load for 30 minutes (125% + 10%).
Activating "Crane test" function
:
Preparations before
activating crane test:
•remove lid with a screwdriver
(hexagon socket, width across flats 2.5)
The " rane test" function can only be activated when the hoist is at a standstill and has
no overload on the hook. The DIP switches S3 must correspond to the settings shown on
the lid of the casing. The " rane test" function must be activated within 12 seconds,
following these steps:
1. Press button S5 for more than 3 seconds
2. After an interval of 1 second, press button S5 for more than 3
seconds again until the red LED flashes.
If an error should occur while the crane test is being activated, the LED flashes 3
times. After this error signal the crane test function can be activated once again.
Deactivating the crane test function
:
The crane test function is deactivated as follows:
•Reboot the device
•Press button S5 until the red LED stops flashing.

5.3 Documenting alterations of cut-off point
DANGER
After
testing the new cut
-
off point, it must be documented, confirmed and signed in the lid
of the case, in the following table and in the crane logbook.
Any undocumented alteration of the cut-off point leads to an immediate loss of warranty
and is grossly negligent.
