Datasheets are available for each terminal that provide more technical information about their capabilities.

Symbol Payment Terminals
Software
Symbol has developed FPE, the Forms Processing Engine that allows you to create and download the forms
that appear on terminal screens. You can customize those forms to each retailer’s preferences while
maintaining a single application for all payment terminal customers.
FPE is a C++ application that provides the features necessary for processing transactions and creating a
custom look on the terminal screen. Using standard and custom forms, you can have the look and feel you
want and the functionality you need to deploy applications quickly without having to write a single line of code.
To use FPE, you simply make calls (using the detailed FPE Interface Specification). No payment terminal code
to write means a time savings of 8 to 12 weeks (the typical time to develop in C++). Sample code is available
to handle returned data (such as a signature data block).
Standard functionality of FPE includes:
•
Advertising
•
Signature Capture
•
Customer display showing items
•
Frequent shopper programs
•
Surveys
•
Multiple language
•
Smart Card
•
Numeric and alpha entry including soft key
•
Card Swipe for track data 1, 2, and 3

Products Overview 1 - 3
•
PIN entry for Master/Session and DUKPT
•
Pass through peripheral support
•
Biometric.
FPE also supports customer activation mode. This enables the payment terminals to gather information (such
as card swipe, PIN entry, frequent shopper card, etc.) while the order is being processed.
The FPE application sits on top of the terminal boot and is functional whenever the terminal is powered on.
FPE includes Serial and TCP/IP drivers, FPE Interface DLL, OPOS drivers, JavaPOS drivers, FormBuilder,
and FPE-Sim.
Figure 1-2
FPE block diagram
Serial and TCP/IP Drivers
Serial and TCP/IP drivers support all of the payment terminals.
FPE Interface DLL
This DLL is used to interface with standard OPOS and JavaPOS drivers or your own ECR application to make
integration faster and easier. The DLL operates in a Windows environment.

1 - 4 Introduction to Symbol Payment Terminals Product Reference Guide
OPOS Drivers
Symbol OPOS drivers are plug-and-play drivers that provide support for MSR, PIN Pad, Signature Capture,
POS Keyboard, and Line Display. OPOS was the first widely-adopted POS device standard to help integrate
POS hardware into Windows-based applications.
Figure 1-3
OPOS Architecture
For more information on OPOS, please visit www.monroecs.com.

Products Overview 1 - 5
JavaPOS Drivers
JavaPOS maps to the Java platform in much the same way that OPOS maps the architecture to Windows.
Symbol JavaPOS drivers provide support for MSR, PIN Pad, Signature Capture, POS Keyboard, and Line
Display. JavaPOS defines a multi-layered architecture in which a POS Application interacts with the Physical
(or Logical) Device through the JavaPOS Device.
Figure 1-4
JavaPOS Architecture
For more information on JavaPOS, please visit www.monroecs.com.
FormBuilder
FormBuilder is a Windows-based tool for the individual responsible for developing or maintaining the terminal
application program.
Each payment merchant has their own logo, branding, and marketing guidelines. FormBuilder is used to
prepare and customize the various forms that appear on Symbol payment terminal screens during the course
of a transaction. The information provided for each form consists of graphical images and various prebuilt
components, such as buttons and text boxes.
The results of the form-building process is a file that is loaded into a payment terminal. The application
program is then able to display the images, place externally derived data into text boxes, and receive
information back from the touch-screen such as a button press or signature.
Completed forms are loaded onto the terminal through the ECR. Forms can also be verified using FPE-Sim.

1 - 6 Introduction to Symbol Payment Terminals Product Reference Guide
FPE-Sim
Symbol’s FPE-Sim is a form simulator application. Without having to leave your desk, you can communicate
and test the terminal application prior to deployment into a payment environment.
FPE-Sim downloads new or changed forms onto terminals that are not live on the system. This allows you to
demo the forms, verifying the look and operation of forms before downloading them onto live terminals.
Services
Symbol can provide a true end-to-end solution for your goals. Our consulting services can help you define your
needs and develop the best solution for you.
