1. GENERAL
This operating manual belongs to the A80 sweeper vehicle.
The purpose of the manual is a safe use and maintenance of the sweeper vehicle and the manual
must be available for the operators at all times.
1.1. Purpose of the sweeper
The A80 sweeper vehicle is used for cleaning paved surfaces.
1.2. Operators
In this manual "the operator" refers to anyone who comes into contact with the A80 sweeper or any
of its components under operational circumstances. The organization itself should ensure that every
operator is sufficiently qualified to work with this type of vehicle and is capable of taking the
stipulations and safety aspects into account. A clear distinction is made between two groups of
operators:
-”The driver" is the person who actually operates the vehicle in preparation of or during the
production process (sweeping process). The driver must be older than 18 years of age and
be aware of his responsibilities.
-”The technician” is the person who repairs or carries out maintenance on the vehicle. The
technician must be qualified and trained in technical actions. It is mandatory that the
technician has thorough technical understanding and is able to read technical drawings.
The driver and the technician must be instructed properly before operating or carrying out
maintenance on the vehicle. The initial instructions are given by specialists from TENNANT An
exception is made if the organization in question already operates several vehicles of the same type,
or has sufficient in-house expertise.
TENNANT cannot be held responsible for work carried out by an inadequately instructed or
unqualified operator.
1.3. Emission data
The hydraulic system of the A80 sweeper vehicle contains hydraulic oil and is powered by a diesel
engine. The battery of the A80 sweeper vehicle contains battery acid.

Rating plate
The rating plate of the A80 is attached on the (lower) side of the passenger seat.
1.5. Description of the working
The A80 is a sweeper vehicle, exclusively designed for the cleaning of paved surfaces. The rubbish
in front of the vehicle is collected beneath the vehicle by two brushes. There it is sucked through the
suction mouth and transported to the rubbish hopper. The suction force in the suction mouth is
caused by under-pressure in the rubbish hopper. The fan on the rubbish hopper pumps the air out of
the rubbish hopper and releases it to the outside air through the air extraction duct in the top of the
rubbish hopper. A labyrinth inside changes the direction of the air stream several times, thereby
reducing the noise. The rubbish is moistened in the suction mouth so that it precipitates onto the
floor of the rubbish hopper and cannot be blown out again.
The power supply for all the motorized components of the sweeper vehicle is supplied by a
hydraulic system. This hydraulic system is in turn powered by the diesel engine. This type of power
supply ensures that the diesel engine can maintain a constant engine speed and that all other actions
(steering, linear, rotating) are generated by regulating the hydraulic fluid flow. For instance, the
driving action, the steering mechanism, the hydraulic cylinders, the sweeping unit and the suction
fan are all regulated hydraulically.
Only the driving speed and fan speed are directly affected by the reduced power and engine speed
of the diesel engine.

1.8. Service and guarantee
1.8.1. Service
TENNANT has been producing compact sweeper vehicles since 1960. All activities are deliberately
carried out in-house by TENNANT Development, production, sales and service are all supplied by
TENNANT, thereby ensuring that the vehicles are guaranteed Dutch quality products.
TENNANT guarantees rapid and effective service. Components are always in stock and if possible
are delivered within 24 hours. They can be ordered from the book of components supplied with
each vehicle.
1.8.2. Guarantee
The guarantee terms and conditions referred to in the general terms and conditions of delivery shall
lapse immediately and legally in the event that:
1) Maintenance and/or repairs are not carried out strictly according to the instructions.
2) Repairs, other than those mentioned in the technical maintenance manual,
-are not carried out by service engineers of TENNANT or its official dealer
or
-have been carried out by the customer's service engineers without written permission from
TENNANT
3) Changes have been made to the supplied equipment without prior written consent from
TENNANT
4) Components other than TENNANT original components are used.
5) Lubricants other than those prescribed are used.
6) The supplied equipment is used inexpertly, carelessly, incorrectly and/or negligently.
7) The vehicle is used for purposes other than those for which it was designed and built.

1.9. About this manual
This manual deals with every aspect of importance in an optimum and safe use and daily
maintenance of the sweeper vehicle. Other maintenance work is described in the technical
maintenance manual, which is supplied separately.
The text in this manual can be displayed in the following ways:

2. SAFETY
The A80 sweeper vehicle has been manufactured according to current requirements. Nevertheless,
this vehicle can form a hazard to persons or vehicles if:
-it is not used according to the operating instructions,
-it is not operated by qualified personnel,
-it is altered or modified inexpertly,
-the safety regulations are ignored.
Therefore, any person involved in the operation, maintenance and repair of the A80 sweeper vehicle
must read the safety regulations and measures described in this chapter and adhere to them.
Also applicable are:
-generally recognized safety and traffic regulations, and
-national stipulations.
2.1. Safety symbols
The safety symbols on the vehicle must be kept complete and legible.
Damaged or illegible safety symbols must be replaced.

2.2. General safety regulations
» The operator must always observe the safety aspects and pictograms in this user's manual and the
safety symbols fixed to the vehicle.
The prescribed safety procedures must always be carried out in the correct sequence.
» The vehicle may only be operated from the driver's seat, except when the remote control is being
used.
» The operator must keep a safe distance from the vehicle when using the remote control.
» During transportation and while working with the vehicle:
-it is recommended to switch on the (safety) lights.
-the operator must always ensure that he has a good overview of the surroundings and the
vehicle.
His attention must not be distracted from the traffic and he must always act in accordance
with prevailing conditions.
-no more than two operators may be present in or around the vehicle: one driver and one co-
driver or operator of the manual suction unit.
-the plastic see-through hatch in the cabin may not be removed
» The operators may only leave the cabin once:
-all functions have been disengaged and have come to a standstill, and
-the hand brake has been engaged.
» It is prohibited to place any objects on the seat. A sensor mat has been fitted to the seat as a
safety precaution.
» The operator may not wear loose clothing that could in any way become entangled in the vehicle.
» Adequate personal protective gear is compulsory:
-safety shoes : always
-safety gloves : when operating the manual suction unit, hosing-down hose and
high-pressure lance
: while adjusting / working on brushes
: during maintenance work
-safety goggles : while using the high-pressure lance
» It is forbidden to sweep up any materials that may pose a health hazard in any way.
The sweeper must not be used if there is a risk of hazardous substances, such as
asbestos for example, being blown out to a greater or lesser degree.
» All maintenance, repairs, repairing of breakdowns and any activities not mentioned in this
manual may only be carried out by the technician (see § 1.2).
» Only carry out activities on the vehicle when:
-it is switched off completely, and
-the hand brake has been engaged.
» No work may be carried out beneath the rubbish hopper unless the safety supports are extended.
» The driver should always call in the technician if he notices any damage or defect to the vehicle.
Stipulated use
» This vehicle may only be used for:
-sweeping paved surfaces,
-sweeping up litter, sand, grit and leaves.

Non-regulated use
» The vehicle can lead to dangerous situations if it is used:
-by insufficiently qualified/unqualified personnel,
-inexpertly, or
-in contravention of the instructions.
Who may operate the vehicle?
» Only qualified and designated persons over the age of 18 may operate the vehicle.
They should be aware of their responsibilities and take these into account.
» Persons under the influence of alcohol, medication and/or drugs may not operate, maintain or
repair the vehicle.
» Maintenance and repairs may only be carried out by qualified and authorized persons (see § 1.2).
Converting and modifying the vehicle
» It is prohibited to modify the vehicle yourself.
» Only use original components, accessories and lubricants. These have been designed, approved
and released especially for the vehicle by TENNANT
2.3. Safety regulations for taking into use/starting
Before starting
» Ensure that you are familiar with:
-the instrument panel,
-the operating and steering elements,
-the operation of the vehicle, and
-the operational radius.
» Before boarding the vehicle, first check:
-that no persons or obstacles are in the vicinity of the vehicle,
-that the vehicle is free of oil-based or inflammable materials,
-that the windows, handles, steps and operating areas are free of oil, grease, fuel, rubbish,
snow and ice, and
-that the protective shields are closed and locked.
» Only use the steps and handles intended for the purpose when boarding the vehicle.
» Before starting, check:
-that there are no obvious defects to the vehicle,
-that all protective shields and safety measures are in place,
-that the steering wheel, brakes, operating controls, lighting and horn are functioning,
-that the seat is adjusted properly,
-that the mirrors are adjusted properly.
» Never start the vehicle if the instruments, warning lamps or steering mechanism are defective in
any way.
» Do not place any loose objects in the vehicle or affix anything to the vehicle.
Starting
» Only start and operate the vehicle from the driver's seat.
» Before starting:
-engage the hand brake, and
-set all operating functions to neutral.

» Check all instruments after starting.
Starting with jump cables
» Connect the positive to the positive and the negative to the negative (mass cable).
» The mass cable is always connected last and disconnected first! Incorrect connections could
cause serious damage to the electrical system.
Starting in enclosed areas
» Exhaust fumes are lethal!
Ensure that there is a sufficient ventilation or supply of fresh air when starting the
vehicle in enclosed areas.
2.4. Safety regulations during operation
People within the danger zone
» When work is started, therefore also when resuming after a break, and in particular when
reversing, check that there are no people or obstacles in the danger zone.
» If necessary, issue a warning when there are people in the danger zone. Immediately halt all
activity when people do not leave the danger zone in spite of being warned.
» Never stand in front of or behind the vehicle while the engine is running.
Driving
» Only operate the vehicle from the operators' seats.
» Do not use the vehicle for passenger transport.
» While driving:
-keep the cabin doors closed
-do not adjust the driver's seat,
-do not enter or leave the vehicle.
» Bring the vehicle to a halt when abnormal noises are heard or if smoke appears, determine the
cause and have the damage repaired.
» Immediately press the emergency stop and engage the hand brake in emergency situations.
Only resume work once all danger has passed.
» Do not use the emergency stop as a brake or stop during normal working conditions.
» If the vehicle comes into contact with power lines:
-do not leave the driver's seat,
-warn anyone approaching not to touch the vehicle,
-if possible, drive the vehicle out of the danger zone,
-ensure that the current is switched off.
Driving up gradients
» Driving on gradients is not recommended.
However, if driving on gradients is inevitable, observe the following regulations:
Drive carefully and slowly when working on gradients or uneven terrain!
Increased risk of overturning!
» Do not drive up any gradients that exceed the vehicle's maximum climbing capability (15%).
» Always drive carefully and straight up or down when driving on gradients.
» Wet and loose surfaces on gradients reduce the vehicle's road-holding capability.

Behaviour in traffic
» Adapt speed and work to the surrounding conditions.
» Switch on the lights when visibility is poor or reduced.
» Maintain sufficient distance from low kerbs and soft shoulders.
Parking the vehicle
» Park the vehicle on flat, firm surfaces as much as possible.
» Before leaving the cabin:
-set all the operating controls to neutral,
-engage the hand brake,
-switch off the engine and remove the ignition key.
» Do not jump from the vehicle. Make use of the steps and handles intended for this purpose when
getting off the vehicle.
» Beware of obstacles when leaving the vehicle.
» When parking or stopping on slopes, always engage the hand brake to prevent the vehicle from
rolling downhill
Refuelling
» Do not inhale the fuel fumes. Risk of health complaints.
» Always switch off the vehicle and the engine when refuelling.
» Do not refuel in enclosed areas.
» No unprotected fire and no smoking.
» Avoid spilling fuel. Catch spilt fuel and prevent it from seeping into the ground.
2.5. Safety regulations for maintenance
Before carrying out maintenance
» Maintenance may only be carried out by qualified and authorized persons (see § 1.2). Keep
unauthorized persons away from the vehicle.
» Never carry out maintenance work while the vehicle is moving or the engine is running.
» Park the vehicle on a flat, firm surface.
» Remove the key from the ignition.
Working on the hydraulic systems
» The hydraulic system must always be completely dead and depressurized before any work can be
carried out on it.
» Never check for leaks in the hydraulic system by hand or close leaks by hand.
When ejected under pressure, hydraulic fluid can penetrate clothes or skin and cause
severe injuries!
Contact a doctor immediately in the event of injuries caused by hydraulic fluid!
» Do not adjust overpressure valves.
» Only drain cold hydraulic fluid.
» Under no circumstances may the engine be started or operated manually once the hydraulic fluid
has been drained.
» Collect spilt and drained-off hydraulic fluid in a container and dispose of in an environmentally-
friendly manner.
» Always check the hydraulic system for leaks when work of any kind has been completed.

Changing hydraulic hoses
» Hydraulic hoses must be regularly inspected.
» Hydraulic hoses should be replaced immediately in the event:
-that the outer mantle has been damaged (e.g. graze marks, cuts, tears),
-that the outer mantle has become brittle (tears in the hose material),
-that under pressurized or non-pressurized conditions, deformation occurs which is not due
to the original shape of the hose,
-that deformation occurs where the hose is bent (e.g. pressure points, bending points, the
outer mantle is detaching, bubble formation),
-of leaks,
-that a component has not been installed according to the guidelines,
-that the hydraulic hoses become separated from the couplings,
-corrosion of the couplings which reduces function and rigidity,
-damaged or deformed couplings which reduces function and rigidity.
Only original replacement hydraulic hoses from TENNANT guarantee that the proper hose
type is used at the applicable place.
Working on the engine
» Only drain cold engine oil.
» Collect spilt and drained-off engine oil in a container and dispose of in an environmentally-
friendly manner.
» Place used oil filters and other oil-covered materials in a separate, labelled container and treat
them in an environmentally-friendly manner.
Working on electrical parts
» Remove the battery clamps from the battery and cover them with insulating material before
working on the electrical components.
Never use fuses of higher amperage and do not connect fuses with wire
Fire hazard!
Working on the battery
» No unprotected fire and no smoking.
» Avoid acid from coming into contact with clothing or the skin.
In the event of acid injuries, rinse well with clean water
and contact a doctor.
» Never place any tools on the battery.
» When recharging the battery, remove the caps to avoid a build-up of explosive gases.
» Treat old batteries in accordance with legal stipulations.
Working on the fuel system
» No unprotected fire and no smoking.
» Avoid spilling fuel. Catch spilt fuel and prevent it from seeping into the ground.
Cleaning
» Never carry out any cleaning activities while the engine is running.
» Never use petrol or other highly flammable substances for cleaning.

» Do not expose the electrical parts to steam jets when using a steam cleaner. Prevent steam or
water from entering the exhaust.
After maintenance
» Replace all protective mantles and other dismantled components.
Repairs
» Repairs may only be carried out by qualified and authorized persons (see § 1.2). Always consult
the maintenance manual before carrying out any repairs.
» If the vehicle is defective, place a warning on the steering wheel and remove the key from the
ignition.
2.6. Safety regulations for transport
Loading the vehicle for transportation
» Only loading platforms that are able to support the load and are sufficiently stable may be used.
The ramp gradient must be less than the maximum climbing capability of the vehicle (15%).
» Prevent the vehicle from overturning or sliding off during loading.
» Protect the vehicle from rolling off, shifting or overturning on a transport vehicle.
Towing the vehicle
See Chapter 8.
Not observing the regulations above is considered as gross negligence. TENNANT
cannot be held liable for any damage if you do not observe the safety regulations and
measures mentioned above.
2.7. Safety provisions
The vehicle is fitted with a number of automatic and manual safety provisions to guarantee the
safety of people and the vehicle.
2.7.1. Automatic provisions
These safety provisions have been/are activated automatically and must not be neutralized in any
way.
» Automatic brake-light system
Turned on as soon as the vehicle decelerates.
» Sensor mat in driver’s seat
Disconnects the brushes and the driving function when the driver is not sitting on the seat.
» Reverse alarm
Acoustic signal that can be heard when the vehicle reverses.
» Warning alarm
Acoustic signal that can be heard when the rubbish hopper is tipped, lowered or when the
tailboard opens or closes.

» Warning lamp
Starts flashing when the rubbish hopper starts tipping and continues to flash until the safety
support is in place beneath the rubbish hopper.
When the safety support is removed, the warning light starts flashing again until the rubbish
hopper has been lowered completely.
» Hydraulic pressure switch in the tipping cylinders
Ensures that above a certain weight the rubbish hopper cannot be tipped unless the tailboard is
open.
» Four independent hydraulic pumps
» Over-pressure safeguard on all hydraulic systems
» Hose-rupture safeguards
The hydraulic tipping cylinders are fitted with hose-rupture safeguards.
» Hydraulic system that ensures that the sweeping unit is blocked when raised
The blocking is only removed when the sweeping unit is operated to be lowered. So the
sweeping unit cannot be lowered while the vehicle is driving.
» Hydraulically-powered steering mechanism
The vehicle can still be steered if the diesel engine should break down. The steering mechanism
does offer more resistance, but the vehicle can be steered without damaging the system.
2.7.2. Hand-operated provisions
The following safety provisions must be switched on/applied by the operator.
» Starting safeguard
The vehicle can only be started when:
-the hand brake is engaged,
-the forward / reverse selector is in neutral (N), and
-the driver is seated.
» Foot brake
Operates independently of the hydraulic circuit and can be used as an emergency brake in all
circumstances.
» Lockable main electrical switch
» Lockable remote control
When locked it cannot be used by others.
» Safety supports beneath the rubbish hopper
Extendable when the rubbish hopper is fully tipped.
» Warning beacons (3)

» Emergency stops (3)
-one in the cabin on the dashboard
-one on the remote control
-one in the engine compartment
The emergency stops on the dashboard and in the engine compartment are fitted with a key so
that they can be locked during maintenance or repair work.
» Fire extinguisher in cabin
» Camera (optional)
On the rear of the vehicle that gives the driver an overview of the back of the vehicle on a screen
in the cabin.
2.8. Emergency situations
An emergency situation occurs when people and/or the vehicle are in acute danger or if an acutely
dangerous situation is imminent. If an emergency situation develops, the operator should
immediately press the emergency stop. The vehicle will come to a standstill immediately and all
functions will be switched off.
The A80 sweeper vehicle is equipped with three emergency stops:
-one in the cabin on the dashboard
-one on the remote control
-one in the engine compartment
The emergency stops on the dashboard and in the engine compartment are fitted with a key so that
they can be locked during maintenance or repair work.
The remote control can be carried anywhere in or around the vehicle. This ensures that the operator
or technician always has an emergency stop at hand in every situation and workplace.
Only when the danger has passed the emergency stop may be deactivated by turning the
switch in the direction indicated by the arrow.
The driver can use the foot brake as an emergency brake while driving.

3. INSTRUMENTS
TENNANT has devoted a great deal of care to the instruments. With the operator in mind it has
been tried to keep the whole conveniently arranged with the various switches in logical positions
and easily accessible. The operator will experience many of the symbols, meters and functions as
natural and self-explanatory. To prevent mistakes, however, it is important that the operator pays
special attention to all explanations and notes in this chapter.

NNeutral position
The A80 is now disengaged.
FForward
By lifting and moving the handle forwards, the A80 is engaged forwards.
RReverse
By lifting and moving the handle backwards, the A80 is engaged in reverse.

Horn
Pushing this button on the outside activates the horn.
Screen washer
Pushing the complete handle in (in the direction of the arrow) activates the screen
washer.
