Getting Started

In the reflectance mode, verify that the viewer is aligned
to the aperture image.
Use 5/64 Allen Keys to align the viewer if necessary.
Refer to the Appendix A for the alignment procedure.
Before starting this installation, verify that the Continuµm is performing properly by
checking the transmission energy, reflectance energy and signal to noise levels.
This manual is for the installation of the Fluorescence Illuminator to the Continuµm FT-IR
Microscope. The Olympus BX-FLAmanual, and the Continuµm Service Manual are
required for installation and operation.
Remove the nosepiece cover panel located on the right
side of the Continuµm.

Insert a 3/32 Allen Key into the clearance hole located on
the front-right of the Continuµm. Loosen the set-screw,
and then slide out the upper dichroic mount.
Install the new dichroic mount
Hold the new sliding dichroic mount as shown at left.
Part number 0045-334
Insert the new dichroic mount into the compartment on
the right side of the Continuµm. Slide it all the way in
and hold it in place while tightening the set-screw.
This is a two position mount.
Push “in” for normal IR and viewing modes.
Pull “out” for fluorescence mode.

Align the dichroic assembly

Look through the viewer and focus on the mirror and
check the centering of the viewer to the aperture image. If
the aperture image is not centered, turn the two diagonal
adjustment screws on the back of the new dichroic
assembly (as shown at left) to center it (this is the only
case when the technician is allowed to use these
adjustments).
Check repeatability by pulling the slide out and then
pushing the slide back in. Make sure the aperture image
remains centered.
Remove the viewer, and tighten the three 4-40 SHCS that
hold the viewer dove mount to the nose assembly if
necessary.

Mount the Fluorescence Illuminator

Mount the Fluorescence Illuminator to the dove mount
(where viewer was previously attached) so that the lamp
housing is positioned to the right.
Lock the Fluorescence Illuminator in place by tightening
the set screw.
Mount the viewer to the dove mount on top of the
Fluorescence Illuminator and lock in place by tightening
the set screw.
Rotate the cube turret to the empty filter slot as indicated
in the photo at left. Verify that the viewer is centered in
relation to the reflex aperture. Center the viewer if
necessary, using the top dove mount adjustments.
Refer to the Appendix A for the alignment procedure.

Replace the nosepiece cover on the right side of the
Continuµm and tighten the screws

Pull the dichroic mount to the “out” position.
Follow the Olympus BX-FLA Manual for the following
operations
1 Attaching the lamp cable to the power supply.
2 Centering the Field Iris and Aperture Iris.
3 Using the centering screen to center the burner (part
number 4009-646).
Always have the UV Shield in place when the
Fluorescence Illuminator is on.

Installation
Do not handle the burner because finger oils will cause
damage to the burner.
Burner life
The burner life is 200 hours.
The counter in the power supply will keep track of the
hours. When the counter indicates 200 hours you must
change the burner.
To avoid shortening the life of the burner
1 Do not turn the burner off within the first 15 minutes of
ignition.
2. Do not re-ignite the burner within 10 minutes of turning
off.
3. Never open the lamp housing when the burner is turned
on.

ALIGNING THE RETICLE REFERENCE SQUARE TO THE REFLEX APERTURE IMAGE

Alignment setscrews
1. Select reflection viewing mode by pressing the
mode selection switch on the front panel.
2. Use the stage X and Y position knobs to position
the gold mirror of the sample slide directly under
the infrared objective.
3. Adjust the reflection illumination and Reflex
aperture illumination to a comfortable viewing level.
4. Use the stage focus knob to obtain a sharp
image of the mirror surface and aperture.
5. Adjust the size, shape and orientation of the
aperture image as close to the reticle reference
square as possible.
Use the Reflex aperture control knobs (blue color-
coded knobs) to make the adjustments.
6. If the aperture image is aligned with the reticle
reference square stop here. If the image is
misaligned, then adjustments are necessary.
Continue on to complete alignment procedures.
7. Using a 3/32 balldriver or hex key, loosen the
lock screw on the right side of the viewer mount
and remove the Binoc / Trinoc.
8. Using a 3/32 balldriver or hex key, loosen the
three socketcap screws that secure the mount,
then slightly tighten them with minimal torque. They
will need to move with some minor resistance
If aperture image is close, slight adjustments can be
made to the Alignment Setscrews located at the rear
of the Viewer mount. If more adjustment is required,
continue to Step 7.

9. Replace the Binoc / Trinoc onto the mount and
tighten the lock screw.
10.While viewing the aperture image through the
eyepieces, use two 5/64 balldrivers to center the
aperture image to the reticle reference square.
11.Confirm the size, shape and orientation of the
aperture image matches the reticle reference square.
Use the Reflex aperture control knobs (blue color-
coded knobs) to make the adjustments.
12.Loosen the lock screw and carefully remove the
Binoc / Trinoc. Tighten the three socketcap screws that
secure the Binoc / Trinoc mount.
13.Place the Binoc / Trinoc back onto its mount and
tighten the lock screw.
Note: Verify that the aperture image is still
centered. If it is not, slight adjustments can
be made with the alignment setscrews using
the 5/64 balldrivers without loosening the
Binoc / Trinoc mount.
