This heating oven must be operated in accordance with the instruction manual and may
only be used for its intended application to ensure the safety of personnel, the
environment and the processed items and material.
The correct setup and installation of the unit, together with the correct realization and
operation of the on-site ventilation system, are crucial to the explosion protection and
increased safety of the system.

General information
The unit complies with the safety requirements of EN 61 010-1:2001.
EN 61326/A2:2001; EN 61326/A3:2003 implemented with respect to radio interference suppression.
In addition to this for the
the German guidelines for the prevention of the hazards of a potentially explosive atmosphere -
explosion protection guidelines (EX-RL), issued by the EN 60079-10:2003 and
EN 60079-14:2003.
Always quote the data on the rating plate when requesting information or ordering spare parts.
This instruction manual contains information about optional items of equipment which
are available but not necessary included in the selected model.
Operating instructions
The operator must provide anybody working on or with this equipment with written instructions for
any operations to be performed. Such instructions must be easy to understand and must be

Field of application
The FT 6060 fresh-air laboratory heating oven has been designed as an item of laboratory
equipment to be used for heating items and materials in the laboratory.
The items or materials to be heated in batches may bear traces of combustible liquid solvents.
These combustible solvents may belong to danger classes II A and II B, temperature classes T 1,
T 2, T 3 and T 4.
Heat treatment of samples or materials with operating temperatures of
5° above the temperature of the fresh air up to 70 °C (T 4) 1) or
5° above the temperature of the fresh air up to 105 °C (T 1, T 2, T 3) 1)
e.g. for drying, ageing, gelling, concentration, analysis, fusing, oxidizing, reducing,
preheating, etc.
The quantity of combustible solvent introduced into the inner chamber is only restricted by the
maximum loading volume of the processed items or material and the loaded weight.
When loading the items or material to be processed, make sure that sufficient clearance is
maintained between the inside walls of the inner chamber and the loaded articles and between
the individual items in order to maintain an adequate free cross section of flow for the current of
air passing through the chamber.
This prevents any local concentration and ensures an even heat rise and penetration of the
loaded articles.
All items must be placed in open containers before being loaded into the chamber.
Refer to the chapter on OPERATION for an example of loading.
The unit has been designed for installation and operation in the following fields:
Laboratories, e.g. in the commercial or industrial sector, schools, universities, hospitals and
biology.
Operating areas subject to fire risk as defined by DIN VDE 0100 Part 720.
Refer to the chapter on TECHNICAL DATA for information about the protection class.
The heating oven has been designed for continuous use.
Protective gloves, goggles, etc. must be made available to the operator.
Zone 1 explosion protection measures have been implemented inside the internal
chamber. The unit must not, however, be used in intrinsically hazardous areas.
The unit has also not been designed to dry hazardous dust or explosive substances.

temperature will not be reached if the temperature of the fresh air is lower than this and/or a
lower voltage is used.

Safety Instructions
Comply with the instructions in this manual and keep it in the vicinity of the unit.
This heating oven must be operated in accordance with the instruction manual and may only be
used for its intended applications to ensure the safety of personnel, the environment and the
processed items and materials.
Before using this equipment, read the instruction manual carefully and comply with the
instructions that it contains to avoid making mistakes and to prevent any personal injury or
damage to property.
The operator must provide anybody working on or with this equipment written instructions for any
operations to be performed. Such instructions must be easy to understand and must be available
in the language of the respective personnel.
The unit may only be used by suitably qualified, trained personnel.
Check that the setting of the temperature class selector switch is suitable for the combustible
solvent used on the articles to be heated before starting the heat treatment process.
The key for the temperature class selector switch must be kept by a responsible member of staff
to prevent unauthorized operation.
Children must be kept away from the equipment at all times.
If the unit is damaged in any way (e.g. defective seals), this may jeopardize the explosion
protection of the equipment. In this case, the unit may only be started up when the damaged
safety facilities have been repaired by qualified personnel, when the explosion protection
measures have been checked and when the unit has resumed its safe state.
Apart from the instructions in this manual, the respective national regulations must also be
The applicable national environmental regulations must be observed for the extraction of exhaust
gases that are produced during heat treatment. Suitable measures must be implemented to
ensure that such gases are safely led outside without endangering individuals.
Check the mains lead and connector for damage before plugging into the socket-outlet. If there
are any signs of damage, do not connect the unit up to mains.
The voltage quoted on the rating plate (rated voltage) must agree with the mains supply voltage.
Protective gloves, goggles etc. must be made available to the operator.
- RISK OF BURNING - The surfaces around the opening of the inner chamber become hot at
high operating temperatures. Avoid contact with these surfaces.
Any work to be conducted on the electrical equipment of the unit may only be performed by a
qualified electrician. The unit must be disconnected from the mains supply before commencing
service or repair work.
Only use approved accessories and approved genuine spare parts. The use of any other parts
may result in unforeseen problemsn and should be avoided under all circumstances.
The serviceability and safety of the unit can only be guaranteed if the necessary tests,
maintenance, servicing and repair work is carried out by the Thermo service personnel or other
agencies who are authorized to act on our behalf.
Thermo Electron LED GmbH cannot accept any liability for any damage that occurs as a
result of improper use or repair work, which has not been performed by Thermo service centers,
or if parts other than the approved genuine spare parts/accessories are used.

Unpacking the unit
Unpack the unit, remove the transport safety fixtures from the inner chamber and remove any
dirt or dust which may have accumulated in transit.
Transport
If the unit is damaged in any way (e.g. defective seals), this may jeopardize the explosion
protection of the equipment. In this case, the unit may only be started up when the damaged
safety facilities have been repaired by qualified personnel, when the explosion protection
measures have been checked and when the unit has resumed its safe state.
Handle the unit with care. Avoid jarring and protect against damage.
Do not lift by the door handle, the door itself, the control unit, the ventilation/inert gas connectors
or the power lead.

Installation
Installation location requirements:
Dry, the ambient air humidity should be within the normal range of 60 to 70 %
relative humidity. Condensation should be avoided if possible. If condensation has formed
on the unit following a change of location or during transportation, for example, wait until the
unit has dried out completely before putting into operation.
The ambient air should not contain excessive amounts of dust (comply with the
instructions in the chapter on MAINTENANCE).
The ambient temperature and the temperature of the fresh air should not exceed 40 °C.
The room in which the unit is installed must be equipped with an adequate monitored
ventilation system in order to reduce the risk of explosion of the vapours / air
mixtures released when the processed articles are loaded and unloaded to a
minimum.
The unit may not be installed in enclosed spaces without ventilation facilities.
If several units are to be installed in the same room, it may be necessary to provide
additional ventilation facilities in addition to the adequate ventilation system

described above (e.g. supplementary zone ventilation).

Installation
Type of installation:
Keep the unit away from direct sunlight. UV radiation may cause discolouration of plastic
parts.
Place the fresh-air laboratory heating oven on a firm, fireproof surface (e.g. laboratory
table, support frame) in a stable upright position.
The unit has been designed for stand-alone installation.
Do not cover or obstruct the ventilation or exhaust vents in the unit housing, remove
any dust or dirt with a vacuum cleaner.
Do not leave any objects on top of the unit.

The exhaust pipe must be led through / past adjacent surfaces / objects located above or behind
the unit with heat insulation to avoid the risk of fire and unwanted condensation.
Mains connection
The laboratory heating oven is supplied with a permanently connected, flexible mains power lead
with connector (grounded). Examine the power lead and connector for damage before using
the unit and at regular intervals. If there are any signs of damage, do not connect to the mains
supply.
The voltage quoted on the rating plate (rated voltage) must agree with the nominal mains
voltage.
The heating oven may only be connected up to the mains via a properly installed socket outlet
with PE conductor (protection class I) or a permanent terminal connection. Rubber-sheathed
flexible cable of type H 07 RN-F 3 G 2.5 should be used if any extensions are required to connect
the unit and such extensions should not be longer than 5 m.
An earth-leakage circuit-breaker should also be fitted in the supply system to provide additional
protection against electric shocks. Circuit protection must be provided in the form of a T 16 A
fusible link or e.g. a B 16 circuit-breaker.

Earth bonding
An M 6 stud is provided for an additional local earth bonding (e.g. 6 mm2lead) next to the mains
cable entry on the rear panel of the unit. We advise you to use this connection facility.
Noise insulation
The unit ventilation system develops a sound pressure of approx. 57 dB(A).
The unit may develop higher noise levels in unfavorable installation conditions. Supplementary
measures may have to be implemented to improve the sound insulation in the room.
Protective gas connection
An adequate supply of compressed air or inert gas (e.g. 10 000 liter nitrogen bottle or central
supply) must be connected up to unit (rear panel) for emergency ventilation in the event of a fault
during the heat treatment process (additional safety measures may be necessary depending on
to the chosen inert gas).
Connection: use a gas fitting ( outer Ø 5 mm) and hose to connect up to the gas supply and
secure.
The connection must be made via a pressure reducer with 1 bar input pressure setting.
Check the input pressure setting:
-Before connecting up to the unit, allow the gas to flow freely and set the input pressure to 1
bar on the pressure reducer.
-Connect up to the unit before starting, with the power switch set to " O ", set the
release switch to " " open the gas supply and allow the gas to flow, set the
pressure reducer to 1 bar input pressure.
Close the release switch.
It may not be necessary / possible to change the setting of the pressure reducer. Only
inert gases or compressed air may be used. Do not connect up to burnable gases.
On-site ventilation system, General information
The total length of the connected ventilation and exhaust air lines should not exceed 6 m
(pipe Ø : 100 mm) with a maximum of 3 elbows each 90 °. A directly connected exhaust air line
(without draft breaker) must not be longer than 1 m.
Following installation of the required lines, the unit can be adapted to the local ventilation
conditions within certain limits by adjusting the fresh-air flap. This work may only be performed
by suitably qualified authorized personnel.
Longer lines or greater flow resistance (e.g. caused by fine fresh-air filters) may necessitate a
modification to the fresh-air supply, e.g. with a blower.
Refer to the chapter on TECHNICAL DATA for further information on the ventilation system.

When connecting protective gases, the national valid environmental regulations and
accident prevention regulations must be observed.

Connecting to a fresh-air system
The fresh-air laboratory heating oven must be connected to a fresh-air supply. The connection
must be sealed (nom. Ø of the flange: 100). The connector piece on the unit must not be
subjected to any mechanical stresses. The flange-fitted fresh-air supply line must be free of
tension, thrust, distortion and bends.
The length of the connected fresh-air supply line must not exceed 5 m. The fresh air may be
passed through an air intake filter (approved accessory), which removes any dust particles.
The fresh-air supply must originate in a neutral area which is not subject to explosion
hazards and must not contain any solvent vapor.
The possible working temperatures are directly dependent on the temperature of the supplied air.
The unit has precisely defined heating capacity reserves at its disposal for reasons related to
explosion protection. Under unfavorable conditions (fresh-air temperatures < 20 °C), it is possible
that the maximum settable working temperature will not be reached in the inner chamber (if the
fresh-air supply is taken from outside and is subject to large fluctuations in temperature). Please
check whether the required fresh-air supply can therefore be taken from a temperature-equalized
neutral area (e.g. adjacent rooms ...) before connecting up.
The temperature of the supplied air should be within the range of >20 °C to 30 °C, but
should not exceed 40°.
Connecting to an extraction system
Comply with the applicable national environmental regulations for the extraction of
exhaust gases released during the heat treatment. Suitable measures must be
implemented to ensure that such gases are safely led directly outside without

All flue ducts must be made of fireproof materials and must be sealed.
A draft breaker must be used to connect the unit to the extraction system, as the planned
ventilation concept for the heating oven may otherwise be detrimentally affected.
Flow monitors must be used to monitor the exhaust gas / air flow volume of the extraction
system. A problem in the flow of exhaust gases must cause an alarm signal to be given.
It must not be possible to start a heat treatment process involving combustible solvents when
the ventilation system is switched off or defective (e.g. organizational measures, operating
instructions ...).
Use the draft breaker to adjust the air flow volume in such a way that exhaust gases can be
extracted reliably without producing any eddying at the unit's exhaust-gas connector. (Air speed
of the exhaust air flow volume ≅air speed of the unit's exhaust air).
The exhaust air/gases from the unit must never come into contact with combustion exhaust
gases.
The exhaust-air blower to be provided on site must be capable of handling potentially

Connecting to an extraction system
If several units of the same type are to be connected up to a collecting main, steps must be taken
to ensure that the ventilation systems of the various units are interlocked. It may also be
necessary to use this interlock facility to control the suction capacity of the blower.

Example of the sizing of an extraction system:
The exhaust-air flow volume of the FT 6060 amounts to around VolUnit =35 m3 / h. The diameter of
the unit's exhaust-air connector is 100 mm.
The resulting "air" speed vGas of the expected flue gases is therefore given by:
v Gas = VolUnit : A Pipe = 35 m3/ 3600 s : {[(0.1 m)2x π] : 4} = 1. 24 m/s
The air speed prevailing in the draft breaker to be installed must be slightly greater than the
exhaust-air speed at the unit's connector piece, assumption: v Gas1 = 1. 5 m/s.
Assuming that a pipe with a Ø of 150 mm is to be used as the draft breaker, the minimum
exhaust-air flow to be delivered by the blower (not allowing for the anticipated line losses)
amounts to:
VBlower = v Gas1 x A Draft br. = 1. 5 m/s x {[(0. 15 m)2x π] : 4} x 3600 s/h = 95.4 m3/h
The exhaust-air blower to be provided at the installation location must therefore have a volume
flow of >95.4 m3/h.

The blower (B) draws fresh air (F) in from a neutral area. The fresh air is heated by the heating
register (H) and is passed into the inner chamber of the unit (I) via an air duct (A).
The baffles in the inner chamber distribute the heated fresh air which, together with the vapors
released during the heat treatment, is subsequently discharged from the exhaust-air connector
(C) as vapor/air mixture.
The operating temperature is controlled by an electronic controller (in E).
The controller can be used to set the operating temperature in the inner chamber up to 105 °C (T
3) or 70 °C (T 4), depending on the articles or materials undergoing heat treatment.
A seond temperature controller has provided to prevent overheating of the treated articles
(material protection).
As we can assume that dangerous, potentially explosive mixtures may be produced
occasionally during the heat treatment process, supplementary explosion protection
measures have been implemented in the inner chamber of the unit (also refer to the chapter
on safety devices).

The unit design rules out potential ignition sources, high surface temperatures and ignition
resulting from arcing.
Prevention of dangerously high surface temperatures:
The heating system is rinsed with fresh air during operation and in the event of a fault and is
therefore neutralized. The unit has been dimensioned in such a way that the surface
temperatures in the inner chamber and the nearest baffles in the labyrinth will not exceed the
respective temperature limit (80 % of the ignition temperature) for the set solvent temperature
class.
The heating temperature and the associated surface temperatures are self-limiting.
The power switchover for the heat treatment of combustible solvents between temperature
class T 1, T 2, T 3 or T 4 must be made consciously by means of a key-operated selector
switch.

Safety devices
Explosion protection
Prevention of arcing:
The inner chamber does not contain any built-in electrical equipment. All of the unit's metallic
components are included in the electric safeguards / earth bonding.
The homogeneous materials used in the inner chamber and the design features of the
mechanical moving parts rule out the possibility of arcing as a result of mechanical friction.
The blower design ensures that ignition cannot be caused by arcing when the ventilation system
switches on.
Sealing:
The inner enclosure is welded steam-tight in order to prevent condensation forming in the
thermal insulation. The inner door casing is made of a single piece. The door is sealed tight by
thermally aged silicone rubber seal. The door bearings are adjustable to guarantee the sealing
effect on a permanent basis.
Ventilation:
When the unit is switched on, the entire internal airspace is rinsed with fresh air before the
heating system can be switched on. This ensures that no dangerous, potentially explosive
atmosphere can build up in the heating system, between the fresh-air intakes and the entry to the
inner chamber.
The unit's ventilation system is monitored constantly by flow monitors. The heating is
deactivated immediately if there is a fault in the ventilation system.
The above-mentioned rinsing procedure takes place every time the door to the unit is closed, e.g.
after loading, and the function of the ventilation monitoring system is checked automatically
("Fault" alarm signal).
The ventilation fail-safety device prevents a potentially explosive atmosphere in the inner
chamber from entering the ventilation system and making contact with hot surfaces in the event
of a power failure.
Electric control system:
A switchbox in the base of the unit accommodates the electric system. Fitting the switchbox into
the unit (IP 54) and the additional sealing of the control panel ensures that no dangerous vapors
can penetrate the switchbox while the unit is in operation.

of a fault, have been realized in accordance with the requirements for the "intrinsically safe"
type of protection (EEx i (a) II C).

This pilot lamp lights up during the fresh-air rinsing operation and when there is a fault in the
ventilation or heating system, it indicates that the unit is not ready for use.
If the temperature class is changed from T3 to T4 when the temperature in the inner
chamber is >70°C, the red pilot lamp also indicates that the required parameters have not
yet been fulfilled. Wait until this lamp goes out before loading the unit.
The lamp goes out automatically when the rinsing operation has been completed or the fault
has been eliminated. Do not use the unit if this light stays on. The unit may not be used until
the cause of the problem has been found and eliminated (by an authorized service center
where applicable).
5Temperature class selector switch with key:
The keylock function of this switch ensures that the selected temperature class can only be
changed by authorized personnel.
After selecting the temperature class for the respective combustive solvent, remove the key
and keep in a safe place.
" T 3 " = to handle combustible liquids of temperature classes T 1, T 2 and T 3

The controller display gives a continuous indication of the actual temperature inside the inner
chamber (larger display at the top) and the set temperature. The selected operating
temperature can be adjusted with the arrow keys (up and down). Select a suitable operating
temperature setting for the respective temperature class (T3=max. 105°C, T4=max. 70°C).
7Material protection:
If the material undergoing treatment is sensitive to high temperatures and the maximum
temperature must remain below the maximum settable operating temperature in the event of
a fault in the temperature control system, setting this second temperature controller to a
temperature which is just above the selected operating temperature (e.g. approx. 10 °C) can
prevent damage to the items in the unit. This material protection device stops the
temperature rising above its set value if there is a fault in the temperature control circuit.
The "Fault" pilot lamp lights up when this protective function responds.
Ensure that this device works properly by conducting a functional check at regular intervals.
To do this:
-Set the oeprating temperature on the temperature controller
-Set the material protection device to approx. 10 °C above the temperature set on the
controller
-Operate the heating oven at this setting until it reaches steady-state condition
-Change the setting of the material protection device to a temperature below that
of the controller
-The material protection device must respond - "Fault" pilot lamp
-Change the setting of the material protection device back to its original position
Operator control is analog to that of temperature controller 6.
