Safety instructions IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not use this product for protection or as part of

Battery warning This product contains a lithium battery. Make sure you respect polarity (+/-)
when inserting batteries into Thermo Scientific devices. Reversing polarity
by inserting the batteries incorrectly can cause the product to heat up, and
may lead to a battery liquid leak. Use only batteries recommended by
Thermo Fisher Scientific. Do not change battery types, such as alkaline and
magnesium, or use batteries of different brands, or even different types of
batteries of the same brand. Incorrect batteries may cause the device to heat
up, and may result in a fire or battery liquid leakage. Never dispose of
batteries in fire. Do not charge regular batteries that are not specifically
rechargeable. When batteries are low, or in case the battery-operated device
in question remains unused for a lengthy period of time, remove the
batteries from the device in order to avoid any risk of battery liquid leakage.
Never leave batteries within the reach of children. In case of a battery leak,
avoid all contact with the liquid present on the batteries. Rinse with clear
water immediately in case the battery liquid comes into contact with the
eyes, mouth or skin. Contact a doctor or emergency service immediately.
Battery liquid is corrosive and can damage vision, or cause blindness or
chemical burns.

modules. The CE mark on this product indicates that Thermo Fisher
Scientific declares that this product is compliant with Radio equipment and
Telecommunications Terminal equipment (R&TTE) directive 1999/5/EC
and the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2006/95/EC. The following
standards were utilized to meet the essential requirements of these directives:

Introduction Congratulations and thank you for choosing the Thermo Scientific
Smart-Vue wireless monitoring end-point module. This manual covers
Smart-Vue end-point modules for use with dry contact devices.
This guide describes how to get your new Smart-Vue end-point module up
and running quickly. Detailed configuration instructions and software
settings are provided in the complete Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue Software
User Manual provided with your product.
Package contents • Smart-Vue wireless monitoring end-point module with battery – 3.6V
Lithium, 3600 mA (p/n SVU503-500-LSB) and attached 2-wire cable
to connect to the dry contact sensor
• Smart-Vue mounting kit with plastic holder, magnet, screws, cable ties
and plastic cable holders and Velcro®
• Documentation CD-ROM
Product overview The Smart-Vue dry contact wireless end-point module can be connected to
any industry-standard device with a dry contact output. Dry contact devices
do not generate any power. The Smart-Vue end-point module emits a low
current to detect whether the switch on the other device is open or closed.
Typical devices that provide a dry contact output include alarm units, door
open/close sensors, and switches. The Smart-Vue end-point module can be
configured to detect either a “normally closed” or “normally open” state to
correspond with the device to monitor. The Smart-Vue end-point module
indicates open or closed in large characters on its LCD display.

What is a Smart-Vue
wireless end-point
module?
Smart-Vue wireless end-point modules connect to remote devices (e.g.,
sensors) to monitor their status, transmitting information wirelessly to a
central database managed by Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue Server software.
Alerts can be sent automatically in case these readings indicate specific alarm
conditions configured in the software.

Typical installation Smart-Vue end-point modules transmit remote readings and alerts to a PC
running Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue Client software
equipped with a wireless receiver. The receiver may also be located remotely
from the PC on a TCP/IP receiver installed directly on an Ethernet
network. Repeaters may be used when the wireless range between the
receiver and the Smart-Vue end-point module is too great to achieve a
strong signal. The diagram below shows these basic configurations:

NOTE: Be sure to configure each end-point module (and repeater, if
applicable) to connect to one receiver only, as shown above in Figure 1. Any
given end-point module can only be read by one receiver.
Smart-Vue end-point modules for dry contact monitoring are generally
installed in a convenient location at room temperature.

Requirements and
recommendations For the purposes of this installation guide we assume that:
• Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue Client software is installed and configured
on your computer, and you have appropriate access rights to configure
devices.
• A Smart-Vue receiver is installed and functioning on your computer or
network.
General requirements
and recommendations • The personal computer (PC) running Smart-Vue Server software runs
continuously, 24/7/365, and should be connected to an Uninterruptible
Power Supply (UPS) that protects against power surges and provides
power to back up the PC and components.
• The AC adapter used for your serial receiver (if applicable) should also
be plugged into the UPS.
• The UPS is also recommended as a power backup for your
communication/network systems.
• Weekly manual system testing (e.g., temporarily remove a sensor to
verify the communications system is working) should be performed as
defined in your Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
• Recommended maintenance and calibration procedures should be
followed.
• If you are storing cold products, Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends
use of a back-up cooling system (e.g., CO2or LN2) to maintain freezer
chamber temperature below the critical level should a power failure
occur. Contact your local sales representative for more information.
• Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends Installation and Operational
Qualifications (IQ/OQ) be performed before initial use.
• For timely notification of an emergency/alarm, it is critical to establish
primary, secondary and tertiary call-out procedures with escalation so
contact is not dependent on reaching one individual. Ideally, ultimate
contact is with a security department or company with 24/7
monitoring.
• End-point modules with internal sensors should not be placed in
cold-rooms.

directly from within the Smart-Vue Client software.
Installation
procedure The procedure described here assumes that Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue
Client software is installed on your computer, and that your Thermo
Scientific wireless receiver is configured and ready to use.
Getting started Wiring the Smart-Vue end-point module to a dry contact device
Connect the 2-wire cable extending from the Smart-Vue end-point module
to the appropriate output on the device where you are measuring the
open/closed status.
For dry contact devices, it is important to establish whether they are
configured for “normally open” (status is considered normal if the contact is
detected as “open”) or “normally closed” (status is considered normal if the
contact is detected as “closed”).
When working with “normally open” devices, the Smart-Vue tests emit a
small charge to test the current loop. If the loop is open, the device’s status is
considered normal. If the loop is closed, an alarm is sent. However, an alarm
will not be sent if the cable between the Smart-Vue end-point module and
the device is cut, as the loop will still be open just as for a “normally open”
condition and the cut cable will not be detected. When working with a
device configured for “normally closed”, the Smart-Vue end-point module
will send an alarm if the cable is cut.
Placing your Smart-Vue
end-point module for
best performance
For optimal operation, follow these recommendations when physically
placing your device:
• Do not place the end-point module within 40 cm (16 inches) of another
module.
• Make sure the wireless end-point module is not placed on an electrical
conduit or cable tray (such as for computer network cables).
• For best results, place the end-point module so that it faces the general
direction of the receiver antenna.
• Keep about 20 cm (8 inches) of clear space around the end-point
module. A module that is “stuck” between two refrigerators may not
communicate effectively.
