Battery warning This product contains a lithium battery. Make sure you respect polarity (+/-)
when inserting batteries into Thermo Scientific devices. Reversing polarity
by inserting the batteries incorrectly can cause the product to heat up, and
may lead to a battery liquid leak. Use only batteries recommended by
Thermo Fisher Scientific. Do not change battery types, such as alkaline and
magnesium, or use batteries of different brands, or even different types of
batteries of the same brand. Incorrect batteries may cause the device to heat
up, and may result in a fire or battery liquid leakage. Never dispose of
batteries in fire. Do not charge regular batteries that are not specifically
rechargeable. When batteries are low, or in case the battery-operated device

Introduction Congratulations and thank you for choosing the Thermo Scientific
Smart-Vue wireless monitoring end-point module. This manual covers
Smart-Vue end-point modules for use with dry contact devices.
This guide describes how to get your new Smart-Vue end-point module up
and running quickly. Detailed configuration instructions and software
settings are provided in the complete Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue Software
User Manual provided with your product.

Product overview The Smart-Vue dry contact wireless end-point module can be connected to
any industry-standard device with a dry contact output. Dry contact devices
do not generate any power. The Smart-Vue end-point module emits a low
current to detect whether the switch on the other device is open or closed.
Typical devices that provide a dry contact output include alarm units, door
open/close sensors, and switches. The Smart-Vue end-point module can be
configured to detect either a “normally closed” or “normally open” state to
correspond with the device to monitor. The Smart-Vue end-point module
indicates open or closed in large characters on its LCD display.

What is a Smart-Vue
wireless end-point
module?
Smart-Vue wireless end-point modules connect to remote devices (e.g.,
sensors) to monitor their status, transmitting information wirelessly to a
central database managed by Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue Server software.
Alerts can be sent automatically in case these readings indicate specific alarm
conditions configured in the software.

What is a Smart-Vue wireless end-point module?

Typical installation Smart-Vue end-point modules transmit remote readings and alerts to a PC
running Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue Client software
equipped with a wireless receiver. The receiver may also be located remotely
from the PC on a TCP/IP receiver installed directly on an Ethernet
network. Repeaters may be used when the wireless range between the
receiver and the Smart-Vue end-point module is too great to achieve a
strong signal. The diagram below shows these basic configurations:

NOTE: Be sure to configure each end-point module (and repeater, if
applicable) to connect to one receiver only, as shown above in Figure 1. Any
given end-point module can only be read by one receiver.
Smart-Vue end-point modules for dry contact monitoring are generally
installed in a convenient location at room temperature.

Requirements and
recommendations For the purposes of this installation guide we assume that:
• Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue Client software is installed and configured
on your computer, and you have appropriate access rights to configure
devices.
• A Smart-Vue receiver is installed and functioning on your computer or
network.
General requirements
and recommendations • The personal computer (PC) running Smart-Vue Server software runs
continuously, 24/7/365, and should be connected to an Uninterruptible
Power Supply (UPS) that protects against power surges and provides
power to back up the PC and components.
• The AC adapter used for your serial receiver (if applicable) should also
be plugged into the UPS.
• The UPS is also recommended as a power backup for your
communication/network systems.
• Weekly manual system testing (e.g., temporarily remove a sensor to
verify the communications system is working) should be performed as
defined in your Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
• Recommended maintenance and calibration procedures should be
followed.
• If you are storing cold products, Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends
use of a back-up cooling system (e.g., CO2or LN2) to maintain freezer
chamber temperature below the critical level should a power failure
occur. Contact your local sales representative for more information.
• Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends Installation and Operational
Qualifications (IQ/OQ) be performed before initial use.
• For timely notification of an emergency/alarm, it is critical to establish
primary, secondary and tertiary call-out procedures with escalation so
contact is not dependent on reaching one individual. Ideally, ultimate
contact is with a security department or company with 24/7
monitoring.
• End-point modules with internal sensors should not be placed in
cold-rooms.
• Please see the relevant product manuals for details on installing
Smart-Vue receivers and Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue Client software.

information This guide leads you through basic installation steps to get you started with
your product. For more details, please see the Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue
Software User Manual. You may click on Help ==> User manual to open it
directly from within the Smart-Vue Client software.
Installation
procedure The procedure described here assumes that Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue
Client software is installed on your computer, and that your Thermo
Scientific wireless receiver is configured and ready to use.
Getting started Wiring the Smart-Vue end-point module to a dry contact device
Connect the 2-wire cable extending from the Smart-Vue end-point module
to the appropriate output on the device where you are measuring the
open/closed status.
For dry contact devices, it is important to establish whether they are
configured for “normally open” (status is considered normal if the contact is
detected as “open”) or “normally closed” (status is considered normal if the
contact is detected as “closed”).
When working with “normally open” devices, the Smart-Vue tests emit a
small charge to test the current loop. If the loop is open, the device’s status is
considered normal. If the loop is closed, an alarm is sent. However, an alarm
will not be sent if the cable between the Smart-Vue end-point module and
the device is cut, as the loop will still be open just as for a “normally open”
condition and the cut cable will not be detected. When working with a
device configured for “normally closed”, the Smart-Vue end-point module
will send an alarm if the cable is cut.
Placing your Smart-Vue
end-point module for
best performance
For optimal operation, follow these recommendations when physically
placing your device:
• Do not place the end-point module within 40 cm (16 inches) of another
module.
• Make sure the wireless end-point module is not placed on an electrical
conduit or cable tray (such as for computer network cables).
• For best results, place the end-point module so that it faces the general
direction of the receiver antenna.
• Keep about 20 cm (8 inches) of clear space around the end-point
module. A module that is “stuck” between two refrigerators may not
communicate effectively.

• Refer to the Appendix on page 18 for additional considerations.
When routing the cable for any Smart-Vue sensor, avoid direct contact with
or close proximity placement of the sensor cabling with any high voltage
wiring. Cabling should be placed with no less than a minimum of 5 cm (2
inches) distance from high voltage components. Also, avoid running the
sensor cable in parallel with high voltage wiring.
For all other manufacturers’ equipment, contact the manufacturer of the
instrument for instructions regarding proper placement of the sensor.
Recommended order for
installing end-point
modules
In addition to placing your Smart-Vue end-point module as described above
for best wireless performance, you may also optimize overall network
performance by proceeding with installation as follows:
1. Examine the general layout of your site to determine the placement
of your Smart-Vue end-point modules. The extent of your
pre-installation site survey depends on the number of end-point
modules to install. Feel free to contact your sales representative for
more information on this topic.
2. Place all end-point modules in their final locations before running
wireless setup (described on page 10).
Begin activation by pressing on the end-point module’s button for 3 seconds
(long-press), starting with the end-point modules closest to your receiver,
working your way “out” in concentric circles. This enables each Smart-Vue
end-point module to establish the optimal connection to your receiver.

Preparing mounting kit
with a magnet (optional) Your Smart-Vue end-point module includes a plastic holder so you can
mount the device easily on various surfaces. In addition to the provided
screws, you will also find a magnetic pad with adhesive backing that you can
use to adhere the holder to metal surfaces easily.
1. Clean the back of the holder with a mild cleanser or alcohol.
2. Remove the protection from the adhesive pad on the magnet and
place the magnet on the back of the holder
3. Place the holder and magnet down on a flat surface and press down
strongly for 30 seconds to firmly attach the magnet.

Activating the end-point
module (automatic
wireless setup)
The Smart-Vue dry contact monitor is a standalone device that runs on
battery power. To activate your Smart-Vue end-point module and add it
automatically to your wireless monitoring network, do the following:
1. Insert the provided battery, if not already installed, making sure to
respect the polarity (see image printed inside battery slot). We
recommend that you use a manual screwdriver, being careful not to
over-tighten the screws.

2. To begin collecting data on the state of your contact right away,
make sure that Smart-Vue Client is running with a properly
configured receiver, and then initiate the wireless configuration
sequence by pressing the button on the front of the end-point
module for 3 seconds (until “Searching” displays on the screen).
This installation method is designed for networks with up to about 15
end-point modules. For larger sites, please see the Thermo Scientific
Smart-Vue Software User Manual for setup instructions or check with an
experienced technician.

If a receiver or repeater is within wireless range, the Smart-Vue end-point
module automatically establishes the wireless connection, as shown in the
sequence of screen shots below:




The end-point module begins data-logging upon startup even if it does not
connect to the wireless system. Once the end-point module does connect to
the system, as shown in Figure 5, we recommend that you avoid performing
a long-press again, which consumes battery life for no reason.
Refreshing the end-point module display with a short press
You may refresh the Smart-Vue display with the latest sensor readings by
performing a short press on the end-point module’s push-button. Press the
button briefly to update and view the current reading.

configuration When activating your Smart-Vue end-point module as described in the
previous section, the device adds itself to your current Smart-Vue
Server/Smart-Vue Client configuration.
Testing the connection Checking wireless signal strength
You may use Smart-Vue Client to test the wireless signal strength as
described here, entering your login name and password when prompted by
the software.
1. Launch Smart-Vue Client on your computer and enter your login
name and password to continue.
2. Select Settings ==> Sensor settings or press F11.
3. Click on Add/Update an end-point module.
4. Select your receiver in the pick-list (“local” in Figure 6), and then
select the wireless module from the sensor list on the left.

5. Click on Power to test the connection. You may also click on
Initialize and Current sensor measurement, and Synchronize
end-point module clock to confirm proper operation. Click on
Close to exit the screen.

If this test does not show a wireless signal, please refer to the Thermo
Scientfic Smart-Vue Software User Manual for instructions on adding
end-point modules into the system manually.
Basic end-point module
configuration Smart-Vue end-point modules offer a variety of data-logging, alert and
transmission options. This section describes the basic settings to get started
right away. Please see the complete Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue Software
User Manual for more details.
Moving the Smart-Vue end-point module into a group
1. Launch Smart-Vue Client on your computer and enter your login
name and password to continue. The new Smart-Vue end-point
module should be listed as shown here, where “local” refers to the
receiver and “SDP-local” refers to a generic group for new
un-configured end-point modules connected to that receiver.

2. Press F11 or select Settings ==> Sensor settings ( ), and log in>
when prompted.
3. You may choose to click on Modify Sensor Name to assign replace
the numeric end-point module address with a user-friendly name
(e.g., Dry Contact 1).
The name on the end-point module's LCD is refreshed every 24 hours
(maximum) to preserve battery life. Thus, name changes may not be shown
immediately, but they are taken into account in the software.

4. Create an active group by clicking on the receiver name (“local” in
this example) to Create group, and then enter the group name
(“Lab_1” in this example). Click on OK to continue.
5. Drag the new sensor from the “SDP-local” group to the group you
just created:

6. Click on Close ==> Yes ==> OK to update the end-point module,
save this change, and return to the tree structure, as shown below:

Testing the end-point module by running an on-demand read or status
update
You may confirm end-to-end operation by launching an on-demand read
from Smart-Vue Client.
1. Click on the sensor in the tree structure (“Dry Contact 1” in our
example).
2. Click on the latest reading (rectangle next to the top-most field in
the image below) to read the sensor wirelessly and update the
display.

Additional configuration Your Smart-Vue end-point module offers many features that are controlled
by your Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue Client software. Use the software to
define settings for measurement period, frequency of data transmission,
alarm limits for sending alerts via phone, fax, e-mail and SMS, sensor
calibration/correction parameters, archiving and more. Enter your login
name and password when prompted.
Setting basic sensor parameters
1. Access end-point module settings by pressing F11 or selecting
Setting ==> Sensor settings on the Smart-Vue Client main screen.

2. Choose a sensor in the left-hand panel (tree structure), and adjust
the specific settings (Sensor Settings tab). You should do this for all
sensors in your system.
Note that the Unit field contains “State”. This indicates that the
Smart-Vue end-point module in question is indeed a module for
measuring binary open/closed states on a dry contact device.
We recommend setting both the data transfer and the measurement
intervals to 1 minute so you are notified as quickly as possible if the
monitored device has changed from its normal state.A warning triangle is
shown in the Smart-Vue display if the end-point module’s current status is
in not “normal” (i.e., closed instead of open, or open instead of closed).

Setting alarms for open / closed status change
Set your end-point module for “normally open” or “normally closed” as
described here:
1. In the Settings screen (F11), click on the Alarm settings tab.
2. Click on either Alarm on closing, if an alarm should be sent if the
dry contact closes or Alarm on opening, if an alarm should be sent if
the dry contact opens.

3. Set the delay to wait before an alarm is sent.
4. Click on Close ==>Yes ==> OK to save your settings.
