Chapter 2 Safety
All statements regarding safety of operation and technical data in this user
guide will only apply when the unit is operated correctly. Please read the fol-
lowing warnings and cautions carefully before operating the device.
WARNING
DONOTuse the device for anything other than its intended use.
WARNING
DONOTtake the unit apart. The pinhole wheel blade is fragile and may
break during handling.
WARNING
DONOT expose the pinhole to excessive laser power. This may damage
the product. See Specifications Chapter for maximum input power.
WARNING
DONOTswitch on the laser when mounting the motorized pinhole wheel
onto the laser source. This may cause injury due to laser radiation. Make
sure the laser source is off.
WARNING
The motorized pinhole wheel is not assessed according to IEC61508:
Functional Safety, and should not be used as a safety component.
WARNING
In case of software failure, turn off the laser source.
WARNING
DONOToperate in wet or damp conditions.

Chapter 3 Description
The MPH16-UC is an optically encoded, high-precision motorized pinhole
wheel. It enables automated and repeatable positioning of pinholes for applic-
ations such as confocal laser scanning microscopy or scanning oph-
thalmoscopy. Additionally, the MPH16-UC has a chrome-plated glass disk that
is manufactured using standard photolithography techniques. This disk consists
of 16 pinholes ranging from Ø25 µm to Ø2 mm.
The MPH16-UC connects to a computer through a USB port. A DLL or GUI soft-
ware controls the pinhole wheel. An optically encoded motor provides repeat-
able selection between pinholes with a resolution of 10 µm, without the need for
realignment. Radial positioning of the pinhole is accomplished by adjusting the
focusing lens with a fine adjustment screw. The detection end has an SMAfiber
connector for efficient collection of the spatially filtered light. While our standard
MPH16-UC ships with an SMAfiber connector, other connectors are available
upon request; please contact [e-mail] for details.
Note: The position of each pinhole (0-15), reported by the DLL of GUI, directly
corresponds to the pinhole diameters (Ø25 µm - Ø2 mm), from smallest to
largest (refer to the SDK manual for details).

Chapter 4 Getting Started
4.1. Unpacking and Inspection
Open the package, and carefully remove the MPH16-UC and its accessories.
The table lists the standard accessories shipped with the device.

Inspect the device and its accessories for any missing parts or damage.

ber (printed on the side of the unit) available while calling the technical support
team.
4.2. Setting up MPH16-UC
4.2.1. Minimum Computer Requirements
Operating System 64-bit, Windows 7 or 10 (Not Compatible with 32 bit)
Driver Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge
Other Software Visual C++ Redistributable Package (2012),
Microsoft .NET 4.5.2 or Later
4.2.2. Preparation
1. Install the MPH16 software on your computer as described in the
Software Chapter on page 9.
2. Mount the MPH16-UC unit on a breadboard or optical table.
3. Remove the protective film from the unit.
4. Connect the MPH16-UC to the computer via USB.

5. Connect one end of the power supply to the MPH16-UC and the other
end to a standard power outlet.
6. Double click the MPH16_Control.exe file from the Application folder
saved on your local drive.
The MPH16 Com Port Selection window appears.
7. Select COM7 from the drop down menu and click OK.
Check Device Manager >Port (COM & LPT) on your computer to verify
the that the COM Port of Silicon Laboratories CP210x USB to UART
Bridgeis set to COM7.
Note: If COM7 is in use by another device, a different COM Port can
be used as long as it matches the COM Port Selection made within
the MPH16 software.
8. The MPH16 Pinhole Control window appears.

9. In the MPH16 Pinhole Control window, make sure the alignment
number on the front of the MPH16-UC device matches the Alignment
number in the MPH16 Pinhole Control window for the 25 μm pinhole
diameter size.
If the alignment does not match, enter the alignment number in the
text box and click the Set button in MPH16 Pinhole Control window.
10. Position a piece of white cardboard or white paper near the emission
port to test for alignment.
11. Reset the Select Pinhole Size in MPH16 Pinhole Control window to
the largest pinhole size (2 mm).

see the Alignment Chapter on page 25.

Chapter 5 Software
5.1. MPH16 4.0 Software Installation
1. Download the software from www.thorlabs.com and open the 70-
0034-4.0 MPH16 SDK v4.0 folder.
2. Double click the installer (.exe) application to open the
MPH16 4.0 Setup window. Click Next to continue.

3. In the Choose Components window, select SDK if you want the soft-
ware development kit files installed, then click Next.

4. In the Choose Install Location window, select the destination folder
and then click Install.

5. During installation, the Device Driver Installation Wizard will appear.
Click Next to begin installing the software drivers that some computer
devices need in order to work.

6. If prompted by Windows Security, select Install.

7. The installer will prompt you to install Silicon Laboratories C210x
VCP Drivers. Click Next.

8. Accept the terms of the license agreement and then click Next.

9. Select the destination folder and click Next to continue.

10. Click Install to begin installation of the VCP drivers.

11. Once drivers are installed, click Finish to continue.

13. Once the Bridge Driver Installer is finished, click OK to continue.

14. Click Finish to complete the installation.

15. MPH16 software installation is now complete and a new Windows
shortcut is added to the desktop.

16. Check Device Manager>Port (COM&LPT) on your computer to verify
the COM port of the MPH16 driver. Make sure the COMPort Number
is set to COM7.
To change the COM Port Number to COM7:
a. Right click on MPH16 driver, and click on Properties to open the MPH16
Properties window.

b. On the Port Settings tab, click Advanced to open the Advanced Settings
window.
