TOPCON OS SERIES TOTAL STATION AND MAGNET FIELD
OS Series Backsight Setup Quick Guide
This Quick Guide is to show you how to setup and orientate the Topcon OS Series Total
Station using the Backsight Method.
It is important to make sure that the battery is seated in the instrument prior to setting
the Total Station up as the weight of the battery will affect the level of the instrument.
Step One: Positioning and Centring the Instrument with the Optical Plummet
1) Make sure the Tripod legs are spaced at equal intervals and the
Tripod head is roughly level.
Set the Tripod so the head is positioned over the Survey Point.
Make sure the Tripod feet are firmly fixed in the ground.
Tip: Set the height of the Tripod head at mid chest height to
ensure the telescope of the instrument is at eyelevel.
2) Place the Instrument on the Tripod head.
Supporting it with one hand, tighten the centring screw on the
bottom of the unit to make sure it is secured to the Tripod.
3) Looking through the optical plummet eyepiece, turn the optical
plummet eyepiece to focus on the reticule.
Turn the optical plummet focussing ring to focus on the survey
point.
Step Two: Levelling
1) Adjust the levelling foot screws to centre the
survey point in the optical plummet reticule.
2) Centre the bubble in the circular level by either shortening the
Tripod leg closest to the off-centre direction of the bubble or by
lengthening the Tripod leg farthest away from the off-centre
direction of the bubble. Adjust one more Tripod leg to centre
the bubble.
Turn the levelling foot screws while checking the circular level
until the bubble is centred in the centre circle.

3) Turn on the OS Series using the Power Button.
The “Virtual Bubble” is shown on the screen.
“” indicates the bubble in the circular level.
4) Centre “” in the Circular level.
(When the bubble is in the centre proceed to step 7)
5) Turn the Instrument until the telescope is parallel
To a line between levelling foot screws A and B.
6) Set the tilt angle to 0˚ using foot screws A and B for the X direction and levelling screw
C for the y direction Remember Fingers and Thumbs! Always turn A and B in opposite
directions to half the error on each foot screw.
7) Loosen the centering screw slightly.
Looking through the optical plummet eyepiece, slide the instrument over the Tripod
head until the survey point is exactly centred in the reticule.
Retighten the centering screw securely.
8) Check again to make sure the bubble in the virtual circular level is centred.
If not, repeat the procedure starting from step 6.
9) Press {ESC} on the instrument keypad to return to observation mode.
10)If the instrument does not automatically open the MAGNET Field software, press
{PRG} on the instrument keypad.
Select “MAGNET Field” from the listed programs
The remainder of the Backsight setup procedure is completed using MAGNET Field.

Azimuth Backsight Setup using MAGNET Field on the Topcon OS
1) From the MAGNET Field home
screen, select the [Setup]
Option.
2) From theSetup optionsselect the
[Backsight] icon.
3) This will take us to the screen to
enter the data for the point(s)
being used to complete the
Backsight. The “Occupation
Point” is the point the Total
Station is setup over, in this case
we have no data so a point ID of
CP1 has been manually entered.
If we have data in the job, it can
be selected using the “Map” icon
or “List” icon. The instrument
Height (HI) has been measured and entered (1.650m)
MAGNET Field is currently
asking us for a “Backsight
Point”. As this is a new site and
we don’t have a second control
point, we need to enter an
Azimuth instead. Tap on the
button that says [Point] and it will
change to allow you to enter the
Azimuth data. In this case we
have entered 0˚00’00”, to give is
a bearing to “North”.
Tap on the [Next >>] Icon.

4) Because we entered an
unknown point name (CP1) in
the “Occupation Point” in step 3
which was not in the Database,
we have been given an error
message. Tap the [Close] icon
and MAGNET Field will take you
to the “Add Point” screen.
5) On the “Add Point” screen, we
can enter the information about
the point we have used for the
“Occupation Point” of the Total
Station. In this case we have
marked it with the Feature Code
“STN” for Station, ticked the
“Control Point” box and given it a
coordinate.
When you have entered the
information, tap the green tick icon at the Top Right of the screen.
6) Measuring the Backsight
As we have entered an Azimuth of
“Zero” on this occasion, we are
going to roughly line the instrument
up with “North” on site and then
press the “Set” Icon.
If we had entered a “Point” as our
Backsight, we would now target
the total Station on the Prism and
then press “Set”.
7) The Backsight information will now
be displayed. The instrument is
now setup and ready to complete a
Survey.
To return to the Home Screen, tap
the “Home” icon to the Top Right of
the screen.
