Preparation
•Wearappropriateclothing,includingeyeprotection;
substantial,slip-resistantfootwear;andhearing
protection.Tiebacklonghair.Donotwearjewelry.
•Thoroughlyinspecttheareawheretheequipmentisto
beusedandremoveallobjectswhichmaybethrownby
themachine.
•Evaluatetheterraintodeterminewhataccessoriesand
attachmentsareneededtoproperlyandsafelyperform
thejob.Useonlyaccessoriesandattachmentsapproved
bythemanufacturer.
•Checkthatoperator’spresencecontrols,safetyswitches,
andshieldsareattachedandfunctioningproperly.Donot
operatethemachineunlesstheyarefunctioningproperly.
Operation
•Donotoperatetheengineinaconnedspacewhere
dangerouscarbonmonoxideandotherexhaustgasses
cancollect.
•Mowonlyindaylightoringoodarticiallight.
•Beforeattemptingtostarttheengine,disengageallblade
attachmentclutches,shiftintoneutral,andengagethe
parkingbrake.Onlystarttheenginefromtheoperator’s
position.NeverremovetheROPSandalwayswearthe
seatbeltsduringoperation.
•Donotputhandsorfeetnearorunderrotatingparts.
Keepclearofthedischargeopeningatalltimes.
•Rememberthatthereisnosuchthingasasafeslope.
Travelongrassslopesrequiresparticularcare.Dothe
followingtoguardagainstoverturning:
–Donotstoporstartsuddenlywhengoingupor
downhill.
–Keepmachinespeedslowonslopesandduringtight
turns.
–Stayalertforhumpsandhollowsandotherhidden
hazards.
–Nevermowacrossthefaceoftheslope,unlessthe
mowerisdesignedforthispurpose.
•Stayalertforholesintheterrainandotherhiddenhazards.
•Watchoutfortrafcwhencrossingornearroadways.
•Stopthebladesfromrotatingbeforecrossingsurfaces
otherthangrass.
•Whenusinganyattachments,neverdirectdischargeof
materialtowardbystandersnorallowanyonenearthe
machinewhileinoperation.
•Neveroperatethemachinewithdamagedguards,shields,
orwithoutsafetyprotectivedevicesinplace.Besure
thatallinterlocksareattached,adjustedproperly,and
functioningproperly.
•Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingsoroverspeed
theengine.Operatingtheengineatexcessivespeedmay
increasethehazardofpersonalinjury.
•Dothefollowingbeforeleavingtheoperator’sposition:

–Stopthemachineonlevelground.
–Disengagethepowertake-offandlowerthe
attachments.
–Changeintoneutralandsettheparkingbrake.
–Shutofftheengineandremovethekey.
•Disengagethedrivetoattachments,shutofftheengine,
andremovetheignitionkeyinthefollowingconditions:
–Beforemakingheightadjustments,unlessthe
adjustmentcanbemadefromtheoperator’sposition.
–Beforeclearingblockages
–Beforechecking,cleaning,orworkingonthemower
–Afterstrikingaforeignobjectorifanabnormal
vibrationoccurs(checkimmediately).Inspectthe
cuttingunitsfordamageandmakerepairsbefore
startingandoperatingtheequipment.
•Disengagethedrivetoattachmentswhentransportingor
whennotmachineisnotinuse.
•Shutofftheengineanddisengagethedrivetoattachments
beforethefollowing:
–Refueling
–Makingaheightadjustment,unlessyoucanmakethe
adjustmentfromtheoperator'sposition
•Reducethethrottlesettingbeforeshuttingofftheengine
and,iftheenginecomeswithafuel-shutoffvalve,turn
thefueloffattheconclusionofmowing.
•Keephandsandfeetawayfromthecuttingunits.
•Lookbehindanddownbeforebackinguptobesureof
aclearpath.
•Slowdownandusecautionwhenmakingturnsand
crossingroadsandsidewalks.
•Donotoperatethemachinewhiletired,ill,orunderthe
inuenceofalcoholordrugs.
•Lightningcancausesevereinjuryordeath.Ifyousee
lightningorhearthunderinthearea,donotoperatethe
machine;seekshelter.
•Turnonashingwarninglights,ifprovided,whenever
travelingonapublicroad,exceptwheresuchuseis
prohibitedbylaw .
RolloverProtectionSystem
(ROPS)—UseandMaintenance
•TheROPSisanintegralandeffectivesafetydevice.Use
theseatbeltwhenoperatingthemachine.
•Becertainthattheseatbeltcanbereleasedquicklyin
theeventofanemergency.
•Checktheareatobemowed.
•Checkcarefullyforoverheadclearances(i.e.,branches,
doorways,electricalwires)beforedrivingunderany
objectsanddonotcontactthem.
•KeeptheROPSinsafeoperatingconditionby
periodicallythoroughlyinspectingfordamageand
keepingallmountingfastenerstight.
•ReplaceadamagedROPS.Donotrepairorrevise.
•DonotremovetheROPS.
•AnyalterationstoaROPSmustbeapprovedbythe
manufacturer.
SafeHandlingofFuels
•Toavoidpersonalinjuryorpropertydamage,use
extremecareinhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremely
ammableandthevaporsareexplosive.
•Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipes,andothersources
ofignition.
•Useonlyanapprovedfuelcontainer.
•Neverremovethefuelcaporaddfuelwiththeengine
running.
•Allowenginetocoolbeforerefueling.
•Neverrefuelthemachineindoors.
•Neverstorethemachineorfuelcontainerwherethereis
anopename,spark,orpilotlight,suchasonawater
heateroronotherappliances.
•Neverllcontainersinsideavehicleoronatruckor
trailerbedwithaplasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainerson
theground,awayfromyourvehicle,beforelling.
•Removeequipmentfromthetruckortrailerandrefuelit
ontheground.Ifthisisnotpossible,thenrefuelsuch
equipmentwithaportablecontainerratherthanfroma
fueldispensernozzle.
•Keepthenozzleincontactwiththerimofthefueltank
orcontaineropeningatalltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.
•Donotuseanozzlelock-opendevice.
•Iffuelisspilledonclothing,changeclothingimmediately.
•Neveroverllthefueltank.Installthefuelcapand
tightenitsecurely.
MaintenanceandStorage
•Keepallnuts,boltsandscrewstighttobesurethe
equipmentisinsafeworkingcondition.
•Neverstoretheequipment,withfuelinthetank,insidea
buildingwherefumesmayreachanopenameorspark.
•Allowtheenginetocoolbeforestoringinanyenclosure.
•Toreducetherehazard,keeptheengine,
silencer/mufer,batterycompartmentfuelstoragearea,
cuttingunitsanddrivesfreeofgrass,leaves,orexcessive
grease.Cleanupoilorfuelspillage.
•Replacewornordamagedpartsforsafety.
•Ifthefueltankhastobedrained,dothisoutdoors.
•Wheneveryoupark,store,orleavethemachine,lowerthe
cuttingunitsunlessapositivemechanicallockisprovided.
•Disengagethedrives,lowerthecuttingunits,setthe
parkingbrake,shutofftheengine,andremovethekey.
Waitforallmovementtostopbeforeadjusting,cleaning,
orrepairingthemachine.

•Shutoffthefuelwhilestoringortransportingthe
machine.Donotstorefuelnearames.
•Parkthemachineonlevelground.Neverallowuntrained
personneltoservicethemachine.
•Usejackstandstosupportcomponentswhenrequired.
•Carefullyreleasepressurefromcomponentswithstored
energy.
•Disconnectthebatterybeforemakinganyrepairs.
Disconnectthenegativeterminalrstandthepositive
last.Connectthepositiveterminalrstandthenegative
terminallast.
•Keephandsandfeetawayfrommovingparts.Ifpossible,
donotmakeadjustmentswiththeenginerunning.
•Chargebatteriesinanopen,well-ventilatedarea,away
fromsparkandames.Unplugthechargerbefore
connectingordisconnectingitfromthebattery.Wear
protectiveclothinganduseinsulatedtools.
Hauling
•Usecarewhenloadingorunloadingthemachineintoa
trailerortruck.
•Usefull-widthrampsforloadingmachineintotraileror
truck.
•Tiethemachinedownsecurelyusingstraps,chains,cable,
orropes.Bothfrontandrearstrapsshouldbedirected
downandoutwardfromthemachine.
ToroMowerSafety
ThefollowinglistcontainssafetyinformationspecictoToro

isnotincludedintheCEN,ISO,orANSIstandards.
Thisproductiscapableofamputatinghandsandfeetand
throwingobjects.Alwaysfollowallsafetyinstructionsto
avoidseriousinjuryordeath.
Useofthisproductforpurposesotherthanitsintendeduse
couldprovedangeroustouserandbystanders.
WARNING
Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,which
isanodorless,deadlypoisonthatcankillyou.
Donotruntheengineindoorsorinanenclosed
area.
Preparation
Besuretoestablishyourownspecialproceduresandwork
rulesforunusualoperatingconditions(e.g.,slopestoosteep
foroperation).Surveythecompletemowingsiteto
determinewhichhillscanbesafelyoperatedon.When
performingthissitesurvey,alwaysusecommonsenseand
takeintoconsiderationtheturfconditionandtherolloverrisk.
Training
Youmustbeskilledandtrainedinhowtodriveonhillsides.
Failuretousecautiononslopesorhillsmaycausethevehicle
totiporroll,possiblyresultinginpersonalinjuryordeath.
Operation
•Knowhowtostopthemachineandenginequickly.
•Donotoperatethemachinewhilewearingtennisshoes
orsneakers.
•Wearingsafetyshoesandlongpantsisadvisableand
requiredbysomelocalordinancesandinsurance
regulations.
•Keephands,feet,andclothingawayfrommovingparts
andthemowerdischargearea.
•Fillthefueltankuntilthelevelis12mm(1/2inch)below
thebottomofthellerneck.Donotoverll.
•Checkthesafetyinterlockswitchesdailyforproper
operation.Ifaswitchshouldfail,replacetheswitch
beforeoperatingthemachine.
•Whenstartingtheengine,engagetheparkingbrake,
putthetractionpedalinneutral,anddisengagethe
bladedrive.Aftertheenginestarts,releasetheparking
brakeandkeepyourfootoffofthetractionpedal.The
machinemustnotmove.Ifmovementisevident,refer
toAdjustingtheTractionDriveforNeutral(page41)to
adjustthetractiondrive.
•Useextremecautionwhenoperatingclosetosandtraps,
ditches,creeks,steephillsides,orotherhazards.
•Reducespeedwhenmakingsharpturns.
•Donotturnonhills.
•Donotoperateonasidehillthatistoosteep.Arollover
mayoccurbeforelosingtraction.
•Theslopeangleatwhichthemachineswilltipis
dependentonmanyfactors.Amongthesearemowing
conditionssuchaswetorundulatingterrain,speed
(especiallyinturns),positionofthecuttingunits(upor
down),tirepressure,andoperatorexperience.Atsidehill
anglesof20degreesorless,theriskofarolloverislow.
Astheslopeangleincreasestoarecommendedmaximum
limitof25degrees,theriskofarolloverincreasestoa
moderatelevel.Donotexceeda25-degreesidehill
slopeanglebecausetheriskofarolloverandserious
injuryordeathisveryhigh.
•Forsteeringcontrol,lowerthecuttingunitswhengoing
downslopes.
•Avoidsuddenstopsandstarts.
•Usethereversepedalforbraking.
•Watchfortrafcwhennearorcrossingroads.Always
yieldtheright-of-way.
•Raisethecuttingunitswhendrivingfrom1workarea
toanother.

•Donottouchtheengine,mufer,exhaustpipe,or
hydraulictankwhiletheengineisrunningorsoonafter
ithasstoppedbecausetheseareascouldbehotenough
tocauseburns.
•Thismachineisnotdesignedorequippedforon-roaduse
andisaslow-movingvehicle.Ifyoumustcrossortravel
onapublicroad,youshouldbeawareofandcomplywith
localregulations,suchasrequiredlights,slowmoving
vehiclesigns,andreectors.
MaintenanceandStorage
•Beforeservicingormakingadjustments,shutoffthe
engine,andremovetheignitionkey.
•Ensurethattheentiremachineisproperlymaintained
andingoodoperatingcondition.Frequentlycheckall
nuts,bolts,screws,andhydraulicttings.
•Makesurethatallhydrauliclineconnectorsaretightand
thatallhydraulichosesandlinesareingoodcondition
beforeapplyingpressuretothesystem.
•Keepyourbodyandhandsawayfrompinholeleaksor
nozzlesthatejecthydraulicuidunderhighpressure.
Usepaperorcardboard,notyourhands,tosearchfor
leaks.Hydraulicuidescapingunderpressurecanhave
sufcientforcetopenetratetheskinandcauseserious
injury.Ifuidisinjectedintotheskinitmustbesurgically
removedwithinafewhoursbyadoctorfamiliarwiththis
formofinjury;otherwise,gangrenemayresult.
•Beforedisconnectingorperforminganyworkonthe
hydraulicsystem,relieveallpressureinthesystemby
stoppingtheengineandloweringthecuttingunitsto
theground.
•Iftheenginemustberunningtoperformamaintenance
adjustment,keephands,feet,clothing,andanypartsof
thebodyawayfromthecuttingunits,attachments,and
anymovingparts.Keepeveryoneaway.
•Donotoverspeedtheenginebychanginggovernor
settings.Toensuresafetyandaccuracy,havean
AuthorizedToroDistributorcheckthemaximumengine
speedwithatachometer.
•Shutofftheenginebeforecheckingtheoiloraddingoil
tothecrankcase.
•Ifmajorrepairsareeverneededorifassistanceisdesired,
contactanAuthorizedToroDistributor.
•Toensureoptimumperformanceandcontinuedsafety
certicationofthemachine,useonlygenuineToro
replacementpartsandaccessories.Replacementparts
andaccessoriesmadebyothermanufacturerscouldbe
dangerous,andsuchusecouldvoidtheproductwarranty.
