GIVEN IN THIS OWNER’S MANUAL AND THOSE MARKED ON THE UNIT.
RETAIN THIS BOOKLET FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.
This set has been designed and manufactured to assure personal safety. Improper use
can result in unit’s overheating or fire hazard. The safeguards incorporated in this unit will
protect you if you observe the following procedures for installation, use and servicing. This
unit is fully transistorized and does not contain any parts that can be repaired by the user.
1. Read owner’s manual
After unpacking this product, read the owner’s manual carefully, and follow all
operating and related instructions.
2. Power Sources
This product should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the
label. Of you are not sure of the type of power supply to your home, consult your
product dealer or local power company. For products intended to be operated by
battery power, or other sources, refer to the operating instructions.
3. Heat
The product should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat
registers, stoves, or other products that produce heat.
4. Water and Moisture
Do not use this product near water - for example, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen
sink, or laundry tub; in a wet basement; or near a swimming pool and the like.
5. Cleaning
Remove all cables from this product and turn off the battery switch before cleaning. Do
not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a soft cloth for cleaning.
6. Power-Cord Protection
Power-supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or
pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at
plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the product.
7. Overloading
Do not overload wall outlets; extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles as
this can result in a risk of fire or electric shock.

8. Lightning
For added protection for this product during an electrical storm, or when it is left
unattended and unused for long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet. This will
prevent damage to the product due to lightning and power-line surges.
9. Object and Liquid Entry
Never push objects of any kind into this product through openings as they may touch
electrical parts and could result in a fire or the unit’s overheating. Never spill liquid of
any kind on the product.
10. Attachments
Do not use attachments not recommended by the product manufacturer as they may
cause hazards.
11. Burden
Do not place a heavy object on, or step on the product. Doing so may cause serious
damage to the product.
12. Headphones
When you use headphones, keep the volume at a moderate level. If you use the
headphones continuously with high volume sound, it may cause hearing damage.
13. Damage Requiring Service
Remove all cables from this product and turn off the battery switch. Refer servicing to
qualified service personnel under the following conditions:
a) If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into the product.
b) If the product has been exposed to rain or water.
c) If the product does not operate normally by following the operating instructions:
Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions as an
improper adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will often require
extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the product to its normal
operation.
d) If the product has been dropped or damaged in any way.
e) When the product exhibits a distinct change in performance - this indicates a need
for service.
14. Supplied AC Adapter
Use the supplied AC adapter to operate the product. Substitute devices not specified
by the manufacturer may result in fire or product malfunction. Do not cover the AC
adapter with a blanket or place it near a heating duct, or on electric blanket when it is
in use.

15. LCD
When the LCD panel is broken and the liquid leaks out, do not touch the liquid as it
may cause a rash. If your hands or clothes touches the liquid, immediately wash it off.
16. Built-in Battery
a) Do not heat or throw the product into fire or water. Doing so may cause the built-in
battery to rupture, ignite or heat up, resulting in fire or serious injury.
b) If you notice a liquid leakage or strange odor coming from the built-in battery,
remove the player from any source of flame. The leaked liquid may ignite resulting
in rupture of the battery.
c) Do not touch the internal battery fluid if leakage occurs. If battery fluid enters the
eyes or comes in contact with the skin, they may be injured. If it enters the eyes,
immediately rinse with fresh water then consult a doctor. If it comes in contact with
the skin or clothes, immediately rinse with fresh water.
17. Type II PC Card HDD
a) Do not disassemble, modify or repair. Disassembly, modification or repair may
cause fire, electric shock, injury, failure, or loss of stored data. Disassembling,
modifying or repairing the drive will void your product warranty.
b) Do not touch the drive during or immediately after use when it is connected to a
personal computer, or other device. Touching the drive may result in burns from
high temperatures that are generated after prolonged use. Be careful when
removing the drive from device that is currently being used. Although the drive gets
hot during normal operation, this is not a defect.
c) If the drive emits an unusual smell, or unusual sound, is overheated, or generates
smoke, turn off the power immediately and disconnect the power plug from the
outlet.
Continued use of the drive under any of the above conditions may cause fire or
electric shock. If this occurs, contact your TOSHIBA retailer to request a service
inspection.
d) Do not leave open liquid-filled containers near the drive. Any spilled liquid entering
the drive may cause electric shock. If liquid enters the drive, turn off the power and
disconnect the power plug from the outlet. Contact your TOSHIBA retailer and
request a service inspection.
18. Restriction
Do not use this product if a permanent medical instrument such as a pacemaker has
been installed in your body, or if you are in a location where use of electronic
instruments is restricted, such as an aircraft cabin.
19. Children’s misuse
Do not put this product or HDD Card in your mouth. Keep this product out of reach of
children.

20. Traffic
Do not use this product while driving. Do not operate this product while walking. You
may become distracted and cause a traffic accident.
21. Servicing
Do not attempt to service this product yourself. Opening or removing covers may
expose you to high temperature or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified
service personnel.
22. Replacement Parts
When replacement parts are required, be sure the service technician has used
replacement parts specified by the manufacturer or have the same characteristics as
the original part. Unauthorized substitutions may result in fire, unit overheating, or
other hazards.
23. Safety Check
Upon completion of any service or repairs to this product, ask the service technician to
perform safety checks to determine that the product is in proper working order.

■Can play compressed audio data in MP3, WMA, or WAV format.
■With the 5 GB HDD Card, allows you to save and carry
approximately 1000* songs (audio data files).
(Assuming average 5-minute length, 128 Kbps audio data
saved in individual files in MP3 or WMA format)
■Supports USB 2.0 high-speed 480 Mbps data rate permitting
you to transfer all audio data of a standard CD to the HDD Card
in approximately 30* seconds.
■A built-in advanced lithium-ion rechargeable battery permits
18*-hour (approx.) continuous playback.
(Assuming playback of 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps audio data in WMA
format at room temperature (25°C), with the backlight off, with
audio volume set to the medium level, and the battery has been
charged until the charge indicator has turned green.)
■Is equipped with a backlight LCD so that you can also easily
recognize music titles and related information in the dark.
■Allows you to select on-screen displays from five languages,
English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese.
■The supplied TOSHIBA Audio Application permits you to transfer
audio data easily.

Handling the Player
●Do not subject the player to strong impact; the player may be broken and/or the
recorded data may be destroyed.
●Do not apply an excessive force to the display of the product; the display may be
damaged.
●Do not expose the player to insecticide or other volatile liquids. Also player contact
with rubber or vinyl products for a long period of time. Neglecting these may result in
discoloration or deterioration of the finish.
●Do not place the product in pants pockets. When you sit down, the product may be
broken.
About Problems Regarding the Locations
●Using this player near a radio, TV, or cellular phone may cause interference. If this
happens, operate this player at sufficient distances from these devices.
●Operating the unit at high volume in a public location may annoy people around you.
Condensation
●A sudden change in temperature, such as when you move the player from a cold
location to a warm one, may result in condensation (water droplets) forming on the
inside of the player.
When this occurs, switch the player off, and wait an hour before using the player. If
condensation forms on the HDD Card, remove the HDD Card, wipe off any
condensation and wait a short time before using it again.
Cleaning the Player
Wipe away dirt on the player with a soft cloth.
●If dirt is heavy, first use a cloth soaked in diluted neutral detergent and wringed out.
Then use a dry cloth to finish. Never use benzene or paint thinner, as discoloration
and/or finish deterioration may occur.
●If you want to use a chemical cleaning cloth, follow the instructions provided.
About the Recorded Audio Data
●Audio data damaged or erased through malfunction of this product or your personal
computer cannot be restored.
●Because audio data saved to the HDD Card has been encrypted for copyright
protection, it cannot be played back using a device other than MOBILPHILE.
●The encrypted audio data in the HDD Card is not decoded when it is copied to a
personal computer.
●Copy protection protocols do not permit audio data from one HDD Card to be copied to
another HDD Card.

●You must not use audio data that you have recorded, for reasons other than your
personal enjoyment, without the permission of the copyright holder as per copyright
laws.
About the Built-in Battery
●The built-in battery discharges gradually when the player is not in use. After leaving
the player for an extended period of time, you may find that the battery has become
completely discharged. If this happens, recharge the battery prior to use.
●Actual recharging time may differ depending on battery condition and ambient
temperature.
At room temperature (25°C), and using the supplied AC adapter, recharging is
complete in about 3 and half hours*.
* This value is for reference only, it is not guaranteed.
●Playback time is reduced when the player is operated at low temperature.
●The built-in battery can be recharged up to 500 times (approx.). (Actual recharges may
differ depending on conditions and environment under which the product is used.)
●If the operation time diminishes, the battery may have deteriorated. Replace the
battery with a new one.
●For battery replacement, consult the store of purchase.
●Toshiba Corporation is not liable for data damage or loss caused by product
malfunction, repair, or complete discharge of the built-in battery.
About the Disposing of the Built-in Battery
An advanced lithium-ion rechargeable battery has been used as the built-in
battery. An advanced lithium-ion rechargeable battery is recyclable valuable
resource. When you dispose of this player, remove the battery, and please
recycle according to the local regulations.
Do not disassemble the unit, except to dispose of the battery.
See page 36 on how to remove the battery.

About the AC Adapter
Be sure to use only the supplied AC adapter. Using a different AC adapter may cause the
player to malfunction, heat up or catch fire.
Before using the AC adapter, carefully read and observe the Safety Instructions ( page
3) and the notes below:
●Do not allow the connectors on the AC adapter to contact any other metal object as this might
cause a short circuit.
●To connect the AC adapter, firmly insert the plug on the end of the cable into the AC adapter
jack. Do not insert the plug into other jacks. This might cause the player to malfunction.
●When removing the connection cable, disconnect the cable by its plug. Do not disconnect the
cable by pulling on the cable.
●Do not drop the AC adapter or subject it to strong impact.
●Do not use the AC adapter in hot and humid places.
●The AC adapter is for indoor use only.
●Do not use the supplied AC adapter with devices other than this player.
●Temperature increases on the surface of the adapter is normal. Before moving the adapter to
another location, unplug it from the wall outlet, and wait until the temperature decreases.
●Do not place the AC adapter on any object that is easily affected by temperature increases;
The adapter form may become imprinted on the object.
●Buzzing noises may come form inside the player. This does not indicate malfunction.
●Using the AC adapter near a radio, TV, or cellular phone may cause interference. Use the
adapter at sufficient distances from these devices.

About the HDD Card
Before using the HDD Card, carefully read and strictly observe the Safety Instructions (
page 3) and the notes described below:
Handling the HDD Card
●Open the dedicated case keeping the “TOSHIBA”logo facing upwards. If you open the case
with the logo facing downward, the HDD Card may drop out of its case, resulting in product
damage, malfunction, or loss of data.
●Use the dedicated case when carrying the HDD Card.
●Do not leave subject the HDD Card to direct sunlight, or place near heaters, or inside a
closed car.
Neglecting this may result in product damage, malfunction, or loss of data.
●Do not store the HDD Card in places at extremely low temperature.
Neglecting this may cause product damage, malfunction, or loss of data.
●Do not subject the HDD Card to rapid changes in temperature.
Condensation will occur, resulting in product damage, malfunction, or loss of data.
●Do not use the HDD Card during a thunderstorm.
Neglecting this may cause product damage, malfunction, or loss of data.
●Do not place the HDD Card near magnetic objects or speakers.

●Do not squeeze the HDD Card with excessive force or twist it.

●Do not push on the cover. To carry the HDD Card, hold it by its sides.

●Do not remove the label from the HDD Card or attach other labels.
Removing the label will void the HDD Card warranty and the right of post-purchase services.
●Do not write on the label with a hard-pointed pen or pencil, as this may result in damage to
the cover, malfunction, or loss of data.

Protection of Data in the HDD Card
●When removing the HDD Card from the PC Card slot on your personal computer, always
perform operations for quitting the use of the HDD Card. For details, see “Removing the HDD
Card from a Personal Computer”in the owner’s manual for MOBILPHILE Application
Software.
Removing the HDD Card without performing these operations may cause fatal damage to the
system.
●Do not turn off the power or remove the HDD Card when reading from or writing to the HDD
Card.
Neglecting this may cause data loss or product damage.
●Before executing partition creation or formatting, confirm that it is safe to erase all the data on
the HDD Card.
Executing partition creation or formatting will erase all the data saved to the HDD Card. For
details, see “Formatting the HDD Card”in the owner’s manual for MOBILPHILE Application
Software.
●Periodically back up the data saved to the HDD Card to prevent data malfunction, data
damage, or loss of data.
Toshiba Corporation shall not be liable for damage or loss of data in the HDD Card.
About Continuous Operations
Do not continuously operate the product for an extended period of time (beyond 24
hours). When not operating the product, store it in its dedicated case.
About Copyright
Regarding music, video, computer programs, databases, and other similar works, the
rights of producers and copyright holders are protected by the copyright laws. Making
copies of those works is permitted only for personal use at home. It is illegal to copy, file-
convert, modify, sell, distribute on line those works without permissions of the producers
and/or the copyright holders. Be sure to observe the copyright laws when making copies
using this product.

Overview of the Player
The MEG50AS is a portable audio player that plays back audio data transferred to the
HDD Card. The supplied “TOSHIBA Audio Application” software is provided to transfer
audio data to the HDD Card. For audio data transfer and the TOSHIBA Audio Application,
consult the owner’s manual for MOBILPHILE Application Software.
On a personal computer,
you must first convert the
contents of desired music
CDs to audio data (MP3,
WMA or WAV) using a
software application such as
Windows Media Player.
With the HDD Card inserted into the player, audio data is transferred to the HDD
Card.
With the HDD Card inserted into a personal computer, audio data is transferred to
the HDD Card.
Important
●The MEG50AS cannot play back audio data other than that transferred to the HDD
Card using the TOSHIBA Audio Application.
●Audio data transferred to the HDD Card using the TOSHIBA Audio Application can be
played back only on MOBILPHILE because it has been encrypted.
●Copy protection protocols do not permit audio data from one HDD Card to be copied to
another HDD Card.

About the TOSHIBA Audio Application
The TOSHIBA Audio Application is a software application for transferring audio data (MP3,
WMA, or WAV files) to the HDD Card. Before the transfer, audio data is encrypted. The
TOSHIBA Audio Application also allows you to edit Playlists. For an explanation of the
TOSHIBA Audio Application, consult the owner’s manual for MOBILPHILE Application
Software.

This is an international standard defined by MPEG, one of the working groups of the

This designates the audio compression coding method developed by Microsoft
Corporation or audio files compressed by this standard.
WAV file
This is the standard audio file format used on Windows platforms.

Getting Ready
Charging the Battery
Charging of the built-in battery is initiated automatically when the AC adapter is connected
to the player.
Fully charge the battery when the player is used for the first time after purchase or when
the player has not been used for a long period of time.
Press the OPEN button to open the slot cover, then
slide the battery switch to “Supply.”
This switch is aimed to prevent the battery from
excessive discharging. Perform this operation
only when the player is used for the first time
after purchase.
Connect the AC adapter cable to the AC adapter jack
on the player.
Insert the appropriate end of the power cable into the
AC adapter.
Insert the AC plug on the power cable into an AC wall
outlet.
The charge indicator lights orange when charging is started and turns green
when charging is completed. If the charge indicator does not light this way, see
“Troubleshooting”( page 33).
NOTES
●The required charging time may vary depending on factors such as battery condition
and ambient temperature.
●Charge the built-in battery within the specified operating temperature. Do not charge
the battery when this requirement is not satisfied. ( page 34)
●
As the remaining power of the built-in battery decreases, the indicator ( page 19)
changes like →→→. Recharge the battery before the battery is
exhausted.
