1.ConfirmabnormalreceptionconditionasdescribedintheIntroduction.
NOTE
BeforeusingtheAntennaTestKit,theabnormalconditionneedstobeverified/duplicatedand
inmanycasescomparedtoasimilarvehiclewiththesameequipment.Onceaconditionis
duplicatedandjudgedabnormalbycomparisontoasimilarvehicle,theAntennaTestKitmay
beavaluabletooltoisolatethecauseofagivencondition.
Thesameorcomparableequipmentmeansthesamemodelnumberradio,extensionboxtype
andfirmware,vehiclemodel,andintegratednavigationsystem.Whentherearefirmware
options,itshouldalwaysbeconsideredwhenverifyingcomparablevehicles.

2.Checkvehicleharnessesandcoaxcableforthefollowingconditions:
•End-to-endresistanceofthecenterconductor
•Shortfromconductortotheshield
•Shortfromconductortochassisground
•Pinfitateachendoneachterminal
NOTE
Ifan“end-to-endresistancecheck”resultsintheDVOMdisplayconstantlyincreasinginvalue,
theremightbeacapacitorintheharness,makingthecheckinvalid.
RepairProcedure
AM/FMRadioReception
1.Drivethevehicleoutsideandverifyverypoor,inoperative,ornoAM/FMradioreception.
2.Gatherdetailedinformationfromthecustomeronwhenandwheretheproblemoccurs(e.g.,
indoor/outdoor,certainlocationsonly,certainweatherconditions,AM/FMorboth,orindividual
stationsaffected).
3.Checkforaftermarketaccessoriesorotheritemsthatmayaffectreception(e.g.,RearSeat
Entertainment[RSE]system,radardetectors,FMmodulator,metallicwindowtint,objects
hangingfrommirror,tollpasses,itemslayingondash,etc.).Disconnectorremovethe
componentandrecheckreception.
4.Checkallantennaconnections.
A.Confirmsecureantennaconnection(s)atthebackoftheradio.
B.Confirmsecureantennaconnectionsatthemastantennaorglassantennaconnector.
5.CheckthesignalusingtheAntennaTestKit.
DisconnectthevehicleantennaandconnecttheRadioAntennafromtheAntennaTestKitatthe
backoftheradio,thendrivethevehicleoutside.UsetheRadioConversionCableifnecessary.

NOTE
Whenconnectingthetestantenna,payattentiontothefollowing:
•Thelocationofpluggingintheantennawilldeterminethepotentialcause(attheradio
connector,orattherearofthevehicleonthecoaxcable).
•Puttingthetestantennainplaceofavehicle’sglassordiversityantennamayprovide
false(betterthannormalorcharacteristic)resultsandmightnotjustifyarepairwithout
vehicleperformancecomparison.
•Ifthetestantennadoesnotmakeadifference,considerotherpossibleinterferingfactors
suchascustomeraccounts,radiostations,trees,buildings,etc.

forantennaamplifiersystems.
NOTE
Becauseanoisefiltermayexistintheantennaplug,whichplugsintotheradio,theantenna
cablewillnormallyshowanopencircuitwhencheckingcontinuity.
7.ConnecttheRadioAntennafromtheAntennaTestKitatthepoleantennaconnection.

•YES—Replacethemastantennaassembly.(RefertoapplicableRepairManual
forinstructions.)
•NO—
•Forvehicleswithantennaamplifiersystems,gotostep8.
