EthernetUni‐DirectionalMediaConverters.
Uni‐directionalcommunicationisoftenusedtosafeguardinformationinsecureenvironmentssuchas
governmentagenciesandmilitarynetworks.Auni‐directionaldevice,sometimesreferredtoasauni‐directional
securitygatewayoradatadiode,providesaconnectionbetweentwoormorenetworkswithdifferentsecurity
classificationsandhelpstoprotectassetsbyensuringinformationisdirectedonlyto,orfrom,theappropriate
networkasdesignatedbythedirectionaldevice.
Uni‐directionalmediaconverterscombinethisone‐waycommunicationswiththebenefitsofacoppertofiber
mediaconverter.Mediaconvertersaregenerallycost‐effective,plug‐and‐playdevicesthatallowfiberoptic
cablingtobeconnectedtocopper‐basednetworkingequipment.Thedeploymentoffiberaddsalayerofsecurity
tonetworksasitisdifficulttotapintofiberandgoundetected.Ifthreatsareattackinganetwork,thefiberlinks
usuallygodownandnetworkadministratorsaremadeawareoftheproblem,providingthemtheopportunityto
addressapotentialbreachofsecurity.
Addinguni‐directionaltechnologytoamediaconvertercreatesaphysicallysecureone‐waycommunication
channelbetweenasecurenetworkandanunsecurenetwork.Thesedevicescanbeusedtoallowdatafroma
classified,high‐securityareatobetransmittedtoalow‐securityarea,whilepreventingunsecuredatafrom
reenteringtheclassifiednetwork.Analternativeapplicationallowsasecurenetworktobeupdatedwithdata
fromanexternalsourcewhileensuringitscriticaldataisunabletoleavetheclassifiedarea.

Theuni‐directionalfunctionsoftheseconvertersarecontrolledwithintheconverter,thereforeaduplexfibercablecanbe
used.Or,asimplexfibercablecanbeusedbetweenthetransmittingconverterandthereceivingconverter.Additionally,bi‐
directionalsingle‐strandfibercanbeusedwiththeseconverters.
Ifusingasimplexsingle‐strandfibercable,itisOKtoleaveopentheunusedReceiveportorunusedTransmitportonthe
converters;theconverterwillnottrytotransmitorreceivedataontheseunusedports.

PerformthestepsbelowtoinstallanSFPintheM/GE‐PSW‐SFP‐01.Refertothedocumentationthatcamewith
yourSFPforspecificrequirements.SeeourwebsiteforfulldetailsonourSFPproducts.
1. RemovetheSFPtransceivermodulefromitsprotectivepackaging.Note:Donotremovetheopticalboredust
plugsuntildirectedtodosoinalaterprocedure.
2. Checktheslotorientation.PositiontheSFPdeviceatthedesiredinstallationslot,withthelabelfacing
correctly.
3. CarefullyslidetheSFPdeviceintotheslot,aligningitwiththeinternalinstallationguides.
4. EnsurethattheSFPdeviceisfirmlyseatedagainsttheinternalmatingconnector.
5. Removethedustplugfromtheconnector.Savethedustplugforfutureuse.
6. ConnectthefibercabletothefiberportconnectoroftheSFPdevice.MakesuretheSFPreleaselatchisinthe
up(closed)positionwhenyouinsertthecableconnectorintotheSFP.
7. Attachtheotherendofthecableintotheotherdevice.

Removing an SFP Module
Caution:BecarefulwhenremovingtheSFPfromadevice.SomeSFPtransceivermoduletemperaturesmay
exceed160°F(70°C)andbetoohottotouchwithbarehands.Note:DonotremoveandreplacetheSFPmodules
moreoftenthannecessary;excessiveSFPremovingandreplacingcanshortentheSFPsusefullife.
1.AttachanESD‐preventivewriststraptoyourwristandtotheESDgroundconnectororabaremetalsurfaceon
yourchassis.
2.Forfuturereattachmentoffiber‐opticcables,notewhichconnectorplugissend(TX)andwhichisreceive(RX).
3.RemovetheSFPtransceivermodule:
a.IftheSFPtransceivermodulehasanactuatorbuttonlatch,gentlypresstheactuatorbuttononthefrontof
theSFPtransceivermoduleuntilitclicksandthelatchmechanismreleasestheSFPtransceivermodulefrom
thesocketconnector.Grasptheactuatorbuttonbetweenyourthumbandindexfinger,andcarefullypullthe
SFPtransceivermodulestraightoutofthemoduleslot.
b.IftheSFPtransceivermodulehasabailclasplatch,pullthelatchoutanddowntoejecttheSFPtransceiver
modulefromthesocketconnector.Ifthebailclasplatchisobstructedandyoucannotuseyourindexfingerto
openit,useasmall,flat‐bladescrewdriverorotherlong,narrowinstrumenttoopenthebailclasplatch.Grasp
theSFPtransceivermodulebetweenyourthumbandindexfinger,andcarefullyremoveitfromthesocket.
4.ReplacetheDustPlug.
5.PlacetheremovedSFPtransceivermoduleinanantistaticbagorotherprotectivepackage.

Congestion Reduction
TheM/GE‐xSW‐SFP‐01‐xx‐UxXSeriesmediaconvertersdonotforwardcollisionsignalsorerrorpacketsfromone
collisiondomaintoanother,resultinginimprovementsinbaselinenetworkperformance.Inaddition,themedia
converterfilterspacketsdestinedforlocaldevices,whichreducesnetworkcongestion.
Auto-Negotiation
TheAuto‐NegotiationfeatureisONpermanentlyfortheM/GE‐xSW‐SFP‐01‐xx‐UxXSeriesmediaconverters.Auto‐
Negotiationallowsthemediaconvertertoconfigureitselfautomaticallytoachievethebestpossiblemodeof
operationoveralink.Itbroadcastsspeed(10Mb/sor100Mb/s)andduplexcapabilities(fullorhalf)totheother
deviceandnegotiatesthebestmodeofoperation.Auto‐Negotiationallowsquickandeasyinstallationbecause
theoptimallinkisestablishedautomatically.
Inascenariowhereanauto‐negotiationdeviceislinkedtoanon‐negotiatingdevice,thenegotiatingdevicevia
paralleldetectionrecognizesthespeedofthatseconddevicethenestablishesthebestoperatingspeed(10Mb/s
or100Mb/s)athalfduplex.
AutoCross™
TheAutoCrossfeatureallowsusingeitherstraight‐through(MDI)orcrossover(MDI‐X)coppercableswhen
connectingto10Base‐Tor100Base‐TXdevices.AutoCrossdeterminesthecharacteristicsoftheconnectionand
automaticallyconfiguresthedevicetolinkup,regardlessofthecoppercableconfiguration,MDIorMDI‐X.
