Fit Test Adapter Kit for
AVON Gas Masks and
U.S. Military M50, M51, M53

Instruction Guide
This fit test adapter kit is designed to allow AVON FM12, S10, and C50 military gas masks
(equipped with drinking tubes) and other AVON gas masks to be quantitatively fit tested using a
TSI®PortaCount®Respirator Fit Tester. It will also fit the U.S. Military M50, M51, M53, and
similar gas masks that use the new style drink tube coupler. Disposable parts are included for
200 fit tests.

Assembling the Drink Tube Extension
Use two (2) Barbed Elbow Fittings and two (2) 5/8-inch PVC
Tubes to assemble the Drink Tube Extension as shown.
The purpose of the Drink Tube Extension is to prevent the
person being fit tested from inadvertently blocking the end of
the drink tube with his or her mouth or lips.

Installing the Drink Tube Extension
Insert the barbed end of the Drink Tube Extension onto the end of the drink tube inside the
mask. Turn it so that the open end faces AWAY from the person's mouth. This prevents
accidental blockage of the drink tube while the PortaCount® Respirator Fit Tester draws an
air sample.

remove it
completely
during the
fit test.
W A R N I N G
Make certain that the drink tube DOES NOT contain water or any other liquids prior to attaching
the PortaCount®sample hose. Liquids will damage the PortaCount® Respirator Fit Tester.

Connecting the Drink Tube Adapter
Connect the barbed fitting on the Drink Tube
Adapter to the clear PortaCount® mask sample tube.
Unwrap the drink tube from the mask and insert
the fitting firmly into the Drink Tube Adapter.

Make sure it remains fully inserted at all times
during fit testing.

Open the Drink Valve
Turn the drink valve lever to the open position
to allow the PortaCount® Respirator Fit Tester
to draw an air sample.
N O T I C E
Failure to open the valve results in
artificially high fit factors.
Attach High-Efficiency Filter
Military and CBRN canister filters contain
carbon particles that may come loose and
lower the fit factor. Use the high-efficiency filter
provided with this kit to avoid that problem.
W A R N I N G
Make certain that the drink tube does not contain water or any other liquids prior to attaching the

Start the Fit Test
Have the person being tested put the mask on
and then WAIT AT LEAST 60 SECONDS
before starting the fit test. This allows ambient
particles to clear from inside the mask.
