INTRODUCTION
UNIDEN CORPORATION OF AM ERICA has combined supe b wo kmanship and
modem styling with the ve y latest state-of-a t ci cuit y to b ing you the GRANT
Citizens Band T asnceive . It has been especially designed to give you maximum
pe fo mance and eliability. Vou GRANT is completely facto y aligned and quality
assu ance tested.
To obtain the maximum benefit and pleasu e f om you GRANT, please ead ve y
ca efully the contents of this manuał befo e attempting to install o ope ate the
t ansceive .

The Citizens Band (CB) Radio Se vice is unde the ju isdiction of the Fede al
Communications Commission (F.C.C.). Any adjustments o alte ations which
would alte the pe fo mance of the t ansceive 's o iginal F.C.C. Type
Acceptance o which would change the f equency dete mining method a e
st ictly p ohibited. Replacement o substitution of C ystals, T ansisto s, IC,
Regulato Diodes o any othe pa t of a unique natu e, with pa ts othe than
those ecommended by us, may cause violation of the technical égulations of
Pa t 95 of the F.C.C. Rules o violation of Type Acceptance equi ements of
Pa t 2 of the Rules.
ELIMINATION OF LICENSING
The Fede al Communications Commission (F.C.C.) has uled that Citizens Band (CB)
Radio Se vice ope ato s no longe a e equi ed to obtain an F.C.C. license to ope ate
thei CB equipment. In doing so, the F.C.C. also decided to pe mit CB station
ope ation without station identification.
Elimination of individual station licenses esults in no lessening of the ope ating
p ivilèges o esponsibilities of CB use s. An ope ato of a CB adio station is still
equi ed to comply with the Communications Act and with the ules of CB Radio
Se vice.

INSTALLATION
MOBILE STATION INSTALLATION
Plan the location of the t ansceive and mic ophone b acket befo e sta ting the
installation. Select a location that is convenient fo ope ation and does not inte fè e
with the d ive o passenge in the vehicle. The adio should be secu ely fastened to
some solid face, using the mounting b acket and self-tapping sc ews which a e
p ovided.
MOBILE STATION ANTENNA
Since the maximum allowable powe output of the t ansmitte is limited by the
F.C.C., the antenna is a ve y impo tant facto affecting t ansmission distance. It is
fo this eason that we st ongly ecommend that you install only a quality antenna in
you new citizens band system. You hâve just pu chased a supe io t ansceive . Don't
diminish its pe fo mance by installing an infe io antenna.
Only a p ope ly matched antenna system will allow maximum powe t ansfe f om
the 50-ohm t ansmission line to the adiating element. You UNI DEN deale is
qualified to assist you in the sélection of the p ope antenna to meet you applica
tion equi ements.
Fo automobile installation, the whip antenna may be used with good effect. The
most efficient and p actical installation is a füll qua te wave whip antenna mounted
on the ea deck o fende top midway between the ea window and bumpe .
A sho t "loaded" whip antenna is mo e convenient to install on you automobile,
although the efficiency is less than a füll qua te wave whip antenna.
Fo ma ine installation, consult you deale fo info mation ega ding an adéquate
g ounding system and p évention of elect olysis between fittings the hüll and wate .
GROUND INFRMATION
Most newe U.S. and fo eign made ca s and small t ucks use a negative g ound
system, while some olde ca s and some newe la ge t ucks may use a positive g ound
system.
A negative g ound system is gene ally identified by the (-) batte y te minal being
connected to the vehicle moto block, but if you cannot déte mine the pola ity
system of you vehicle, it is suggested that you consult you vehicle deale fo
definite info mation.
POWER CORD CONNECTION: NEGATIVE GROUND SYSTEM
If you a e ope ating on a negative g ound system, connect the ed DC powe co d
f om the t ansceive to the positive, o (+), batte y te minal o othe convenient
point and connect the black powe lead to the chassis o vehicle f ame, o (-) batte y
te minal.

POWER CORD CONNECTION: POSITIVE GROUND SYSTEM
If you a e ope ating on a positive g ound system, connect the black DC powe co d
f om the t ansceive to the negative, o (-), batte y te minal o othe convenient
point, and connect the ed powe lead to the chassis o vehicle f ame, o (+) batte y
te minal.
NOTE: With ega d to the connection of the powe co ds, it may be possible o
dési able to connect the ( ed lead fo negative g ound system) o (black lead fo
positive g ound system) to the ignition switch accesso y te minal so that the
t ansceive is automatically tu ned off when the ignition switch (key) is tu ned off.
Alte nately, the powe lead may be connected to an available te minal on the fuse
block o even to a point in the wi ing ha ness. Ca e must be taken, howeve , to gua d
against a sho t ci cuit condition. When in doubt, please contact you vehicle deale
fo specific info mation fo you vehicle.
BASE STATION OPERATION
To ope ate the t ansceive f om you home o office, using egulä house cu ent as
the powe sou ce, you will equi e a sepa ate powe supply capable of supplying 3
amps at a 13.8V DC output with a nominal input voltage of 120 volts AC, 50/60Hz.
Simply connect the ed (+) and black (-) leads of the t ansceive to the co espond-
ing DC te minais of the powe supply.
NOTE: Do not attempt to ope ate this t ansceive by connecting di ectly to 117V
AC. When an AC powe supply is used with the t ansceive fo base station
ope ation any Citizens Band beam, dipole, g ound plane o ve tical antenna
may be used. A g ound plane ve tical antenna will p ovide the most unifo m
ho izontal cove age.

OPERATIN PROCEDURE
TO RECEIVE:
The GRANT opé âtes on 40 AM channels, 40 Uppe Side Band channels and 40
Lowe Side Band channels.
When you eceive the SSB signal in the p ope mode (USB o LSB), audio sound may
be eithe too high pitched o low pitched, indicating that you eceive may not be
tuned to the exact same f equency as the t ansmitte to which it is listening. The
GRANT is equipped with a Cla ifie . By tuning the Cla ifie , you сап slightly change
the f equency of the eceive so you get a no mal tone.
1. Place the PA switch in CB function - by tu ning SQUELCH cont ol clockwise,
past click.
2. Tu n the set on by tu ning the VOLUME CONTROL clockwise, past click.
NOTE: Mic ophone must be plugged in fo eceive to ope ate.
3. Set the VOLUM E CONTROL to a comfo table level.
4. Set the Mode Selecto Switch to the desi ed mode.
5. Listen to the backg ound noise f om the speake . Tu n the SQUELCH CONTROL
slowly clockwise, until the noise just disappea s. The Squelch is now p ope ly
adjusted. The eceive will emain quiet until a signal is eceived. Do not advance
the cont ol too fa , o some of the weake signais will not be hea d.
6. Set the Channel Selecto to the desi ed channel.
7. Adjust the C LARIFIER to clea ly eceive SSB o AM signais.
TO TRANSMIT:

The t ansceive Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (V.S.W.R.) measu ement must
be pe fo med p io to the use of the t ansmitte . A.V.S.W.R. atio in excess
of 2:1 may damage the t ansmitte .

2. Select the desi ed channel.
3. If the channel is elea , dep ess the push-to-talk switch on the mic ophone and
speak in a no mal voice.

CONTROLS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
1. OFF/ON VOLUME: To tu n the t ansceive on, otate this cont ol clockwise
past click. To tu n the t ansceive off, otate the cont ol counte clockwise past
click. Rotate the cont ol clockwise fo a comfo table audio level.
2. SQUELCH: The Squelch cont ol is no mally set to a position which éliminâtes
undesi ed backg ound noise with no signal p esent. With the audio adjusted to a
satisfacto y level, otate the Squelch cont ol clockwise to the point whe e the
Sound f om the speake is eut off. In this position, the e will be no sound f om
the speake until a signal is eceived. In o de to hea weak signais, it may be
necessa y to otate the Squelch cont ol counte clockwise, allowing some back
g ound noise to be hea d.
3. PA SWITCH (on SQUELCH cont ol): Full counte clockwise otation of the
squelch cont ol engages the PA function. The PA function should not be used
unless an exte nal speake is connected. In the squelch (o CB) position, the PA
function is disabled and the adio will t ansmit and eceive on the selected
channel.
4. MODE SELECTOR: This switch selects AM, USB, o LSB mode of ope ation.
This selecto changes the mode of ope ation of both t ansmitte and eceive
simultaneously. Set the selecto to the mode on which you wish to com-
municate.

5. MIC GAIN: This cont ol is used to adjust, as equi ed, mic ophone input
sensitivity fo optimum amount of modulation in t ansmit. UNI DEN CORPO
RATION OF AM ERICA citizen's band t ansceive s hâve been designed to pe mit
the use to attain levels of modulation up to 100% depending on the setting of
the mic ophone gain cont ol, using the mic ophone p ovided with the unit.
UNIDEN's automatic comp ession and peak limiting ci cuits assu e maximum
modulation with minimum disto tion.
6. RF GAIN: This cont ol is used p ima ily to optimize éception in st ong signal
a eas. Gain is educed by counte clockwise otation of the cont ol.
7. CLARIFIER: The cla ifie cont ol is no mally set to the cente position. This
featu e has seve al uses and can g eatly enhance eceive ope ation. Fi st, if a
eceived signal is slightly off f equency, this cont ol can be ope ated as equi ed
to optimize the eceive f equency. The effectiveness of this cla ifie featu es
unde these conditions can be obse ved eithe by listening fo a mo e eadable
signal at the speake o by noting the S-mete eading when the cla ifie cont ol
is ope ated. Anothe effective application of this cont ol is in eliminating
adjacent channel inte fé ence f om st ong signais. Ope ate this cont ol, as
equi ed, to obtain minimum adjacent channel inte fé ence.
8. M ETER MODE SWITCH:
S/RF Position: Mete indicates elative t ansmitte output powe when t ansmit-
ing, input signal st ength when eceiving.
MOD Position: Mete indicates ave age pe centage of modulation.
9. NB/ANL SWITCH: When the switch is placed in the NB/ANL position, both of
RF Noise Blanke and Automatic Noise Limite ci cuits a e activated. The NB is
ve y effective fo épétitive impulse noise such as ignition noise. The ANL
educes most undesi able inte fé ence noises.
10. DIMMER SWITCH: This switch is used to adjust the b ightness of the LED
channel display and the mete . DIM position educes b ightness.
11. CH9 SWITCH: This switch is fo use when eme gency communication is needed
on the eme gency channel, CH9. P essing the CH9 switch activâtes CH9 ega d-
less of the position of the channel selecto switch. When CH9 switch is p essed,
the channel display is blanked and the CH9 indicato is activated.
12. M OD—S/RF METER: This mete displays elative t ansmitte RF output powe
and pe centage of modulation when t ansmitting, as well as input signal st ength
when eceiving. The mete is illuminated when powe is on, the illumination can
be adjusted by the DIMMER Switch fo optimum b ightness.

13. CHANNEL INDICATOR: Light Emitting Diode(LED) indicates the channel
numbe in use.
14. CHANNEL SELECTOR KNOB: This knob selects the desi ed channel fo
t ansmission and éception. All channels, except channel 9, may be used fo
Communications between stations. Channel 9 has been ese ved by the F.C.C. fo
eme gency communications involving the immédiate safety of individuels o
immédiate p otection of p ope ty. Channel 9 also may be used to ende
assistance to a moto ist. This is an F.C.C. ule and applies to all ope ato s of
citizens band adios.
15. CH9 INDICATOR: Lights to show that the CH9 Switch has been activated.
16. TX/RX INDICATOR: This indicato lights ed when the t ansmitte is in ope a
tion and lights g een when the eceive is in ope ation.

17. ANTENNA CONNECTOR: This female connecto pe mits connection of the
t ansmission line cable male connecto (PL-259) to the t ansceive .
18. PUBLIC AD DRESS SPEAKER JACK: An exte nal 8 ohm 4-watt speake must
be connected to the PA SP jack located on the ea panel when the t ansceive is
used as a public add ess system. The speake should be di ected away f om the
mic ophone to p event acoustic feedback. Physical sépa ation o isolation of the
mic ophone and speake is impo tant when ope ating the PA at high output
levels.

19. EXTERNAL SPEAKER JACK: The Exte nal Speake Jack is used fo emote
eceive monito ing. The exte nal speake should hâve 8 ohm impédance and be
ated to handle at least 4.0 watts. When the exte nal speake is plugged in, the
inte nai speake is automatically disconnected.
20. POWER JACK: This jack pe mits connection of the D.C. powe to the t ans
ceive . A powe co d is supplied with the adio.

MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT
This t ansceive is especially designed fo the envi onment encouunte ed in mobile
installations. The use of all solid state ci cuit y and its light weight esuit in high
eliability. Should failu e occu , howeve , eplace pa ts only with identical pa ts. Do
not substitute.
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
At six to twelve month inte vals, the following system checks should be made:
1. Check Standing Wave Ratio (SWR).
2. Inspect ail elect ical connections to ensu e that they a e tight.
3. Inspect antenna coaxial cable fo wea o b eaks on shielding.
4. Inspect ail sc ews and othe mounting ha dwa e fo tightness.
ADJUSTMENT
This t ansceive is facto y aligned and should not equi e any adjustment when used
with a 52 ohm antenna. If an antenna othe than 52 ohm impédance is used,
adjustment of the t ansmitte output ci cuit may be made to obtain optimum powe
t ansfe to the antenna. This adjustment should be made only by a licensed techni
cian using a high quality in-line RF Wattmete which will not p oduce standing waves
when inse ted in the antenna cable.

OPERATOR TROUBLESHOOTING
Should be unit malfunction o not pe fo m p ope ly, the ope ato should pe fo m
the p ocedu es ii.dicated below:
1. If the t ansceive is completely inope ative.
* Check the powe co d and fuse.
2. If t ouble is expe ienced with eceiving.
* Check ON/OFF VOLUME CONTROL setting.
* Be su e SQUELCH is adjusted p ope ly. Is the adio ove -squelched?
* Check to see that the adio is switched to an ope ational mode.
3. If t ouble is expe ienced with t ansmitting.
* Check to see that the t ansmission line (coaxial cable) is secu ely connected to
the ANTENNA CONNECTOR.
* Be su e that the antenna is fully extended fo p ope ope ation.
* Be su e that ail t ansmission line (coaxial cable) connections a e secu e and f ee
of co osion.
