OPERATING THE STANDARD PREAMPLIFIER
Front Panel Controls:
Althoughmostofthefrontpanelcontrols(Volume,Power,Mute)areselfexplanatory,VAC
has outfittedthis unit withseveral advancedfeatures whichbear further description:
Phono Section MM (option):Whenfitted,input“L6"will beconnectedtoadiscrete, pure
tubephono preamplifier, providing 37 dBofgain,suitable foruse withMM (moving
magnet) and manyhigh-outputMC(moving coil) cartridges. YourVAC dealer can
recommend the proper phono cartridge(s).
Phono Section MC(option): Asabove, this will befittedto“L6",and provides
approximately60 dBofgain.It shouldnotbeusedwithhigh outputpickups, whichmay
generate excessivedistortion.YourVAC dealers canrecommend theproper phono
cartridge(s).
Monitor:Thesmall knob found at thelower left-hand corner ofthefaceplate switches
between“Source”, “Tape”, and “Cinema” (hometheater pass-throughmode). Inthe
“Source” position,inputselection is determinedbytheSource SelectorSwitch.Inthe
“Tape” position,theSource Selectoris overridden,and theTapeinputs are activated.
[Important: The StandardPreamplifier is outfittedwithafull “tapeloop”, including a line
level tapeinputand afixedlevel recording output. Inadditiontodriving therecording
inputs ofatapedeck,this outputcansupplysignal toanytypical linelevel input, enabling
it tocontrol a second zone inmulti roominstallations.]
The“Cinema” position provides access tooneoftheStandardPreamplifier’s most unusual
feature. Whenset inthe“Source” position, input choice is governedbythe Input Selector
switch.This is thenormal setting,and enables theunit tobeusedas atypical preamplifier.
Rotating thecontrolclockwise tothe“Cinema” position bypasses all preamplifier controls
(includingvolume)andpassestheoutputfromyoursurroundsoundprocessor(i.e., thefront
left-andright-channeloutputsofamultichannelprocessor)directlytoyourpoweramplifier.
Inthiscase,theusers’analogstereosourceswouldbeconnected,asusual, totheline, phono
and tapeinputs. A/Vinputs (DVD, Laserdisc, DSS, etc.) wouldbe connectedtothe home
theater processor, and theprocessor’s mainoutputs wouldbeconnectedtothe pair ofrear
panel RCA jackslabeled“HomeTheater Direct”. Whenthecontrolis set tothe“Cinema”
position,theStandardfunctionsas apass-through ONLY,and is controlledbytheexternal
processor,preamplifier,orothercomponentconnectedtothe“HomeTheaterDirect”inputs.
Mute:Onunits withoutremote control, this is atwoposition switch.Inthe“Mute”position,
signal is blockedfromleaving thepreamplifier. Note: Mute is automaticallyengagedwhen
switching on units equippedwiththe remote control option.
