INTRODUCTION
TheStatement 450 isauniquepower amplifier,andthemostpowerfulanddetailedinVAC’s
history.Featuringanewdirect-coupledinput &driver circuit,extremely fastandvividsoundis
achievedfrom both single-endedandbalancedsources.
Thefront panel attenuatormaybeselectedforaidinbalancingchannels.Itmayalsobeusedtotrim
spectralbalancewhenbiamplifying.
Thechassisismachinedfrom thickaluminum, finishedinametallicbasecoat/clearcoatfinish.
Theisdesignednottothelatestfadbut tosubstance,forthehighestpossible soundquality.Time
spent familiarizing yourselfwith thismanualwill bewell rewarded.

INSTALLATION
01)Placethepower supply initsfinallocation.Itisquiteheavy,andwill becomemore sowhen
theamplifier isinstalledontopofit.Consider thelocationcarefully,and useappropriate
helpinlifting, etc., soas toavoidinjury.
02)Placeoneofthemetalballsprovidedineachofthethree cups on
thetopofthepower supply.
03)Carefully placetheamplifier chassisontopofthepower supply,
takingcare toaligntheballsontopofthepower supply with the
cups onthebottom oftheaudiochassis.
004)Install thevacuum tubes.
Eachtubeoritsboxhas
a“V”number,which
corresponds tothe
labelsonthetopplateof
theamplifier;these
indicatewhere each
tubeshouldbeinstalled.
Fiteachtubeintothe
matching socket.
Wheninsertingand
removingtubes,handle
thembytheir bases,not
bytheir glass bulbs.
Notethatthere isa
locatorpinontheoctal
(eight contact)tubesthat
indicatesproper
alignment.

05)Carefully install thefront glass andtoprails(see detaileddirectionsinthenextsectionofthis
manual). Takecare nottochiporscratchtheglass.
06)SetthetopswitchtoBalanced(forusewith balancedsourceson
XLR connector) orSingle-ended(viaRCAconnector) as desired.
07)Setthefront panel SELECTswitchfully
counterclockwiseforfull volumeinput,orclockwise
ifyouwishtoattenuatevolumeusingthefront panel
VOLUMEcontrol.
08)Install theinput cable inthebackpanel jackthatcorresponds totheswitchsettingsselected
above.
09)Connectthespeaker cables;theblackleadgoesto“-“or“Ground”.Theredleadgoesto
“+” or“Positive”.Followthelabel onthebackoftheamplifier fortheimpedancethatbest
matchesyourloudspeakers.
10)Connect12 volttrigger input cablesintotheappropriatesocketsonthebackpanel if
desired;either will slavetheoff/onfunctiontotheexternalconnection.
11)Provideadequateventilation-allowatleast3inchesaboveandtoeachside.
12)Donotplaceinacompletely enclosedcabinet.Donotstackother equipment ontopofthe
VAC unit.
13)Donotoperateoncarpetoranyother surfacethatmight blockair flow.
14)Thechassisandglass will becomehotinnormaluse.
15)Thepower supply mayproduceasmall mechanicalhum;therefore avoidplacingthesystem
onanysurfacethatcouldactas asoundingboard,oratanylocationintheroomthat
corresponds toaresonanceatyourlocalpower frequency(50 Hz. or60 Hz.).
16)Donotallowthechassistotouchanymetalparts,suchas theframeofanequipment rack.
Thismight createaparallel groundpath thatcoulddegradethesoundofyoursystem.

17)Connectboth ofthecablesbetweenthepower supply andtheaudiochassis. Notethat
eachhas alocating key andalocking collar. Besure toinserttheconnectorproperly, and
fully tightenthelocking collar.
18)Connectthepower cordtothepower sourceindicatedontherearpanel (will beeither
100, 120, 220, or240 voltsAC).Voltageconversionsmustbedoneatthefactory ofby
anauthorizedVAC importer.
19)Avoidpower conditionersthatfloatthegroundpin.
20)Power requirementsare approximately 1000 watts.Paycloseattentiontopower quality,and
beaware thatdifferent power cords canalter thesound.
21) Checkthebias settingsoftheoutput tubeswhentheunitisfirst
installed andwhenever atubeischanged.Itisalsoagoodideato
verifythesettingsperiodically,suchas onceaweek.Followthebias
procedure outlinedlater inthismanual.
22)Notethatthere isafront panel TESTswitch; thisengagestheeight
blueLEDsusedforsettingormonitoringthebias settingsoftheKT88
tubes.See Biasing&CheckingOutput TubeConditionfordirections.

INSTALLINGTHEFRONTGLASS ANDTOPRAILS
Youramplifier has beenshippedwith thefront glass andthetoprailsremoved.
Thefollowing steps showhowtheseare installed.
Laytheprovidedmicrofiber cloth ontopofthefasciaas shown.
Settheglass inplace. Steadyitwith yourhand;donotletgo.
Insertoneoftheprovidedscrew/conewasher assembliesintooneofthe
topholesintheglass.Startthescrew,takingcarethatthethreads align
properly. Tightenas muchas youcanusing only yourfingers.
Insertandtightentheremaining three screw/conewasher assemblies.
UsingtheprovidedAllendriver,tightenthefourscrewstoagentle but firm
pressure
Pull themicrofiber cloth free, starting atonesideas shown

Thetoptubecagebarshaveaspring pinineachend.
Toinstall,placeoneofthespringpinsintooneofthesmall dimples
machinedintooneofthesiderails.
IntheIllustration, thepinhas beenlocatedintotheleft siderail.
Tocompletetheinstallation,press thebarinthedirectionofthepinalready
inserted, andmanoeuver theother endintothecorresponding dimple in
theother siderail, thenrelease.
Inthisillustration, thebarispressedtotheleft, while theright spring pinis
setintothedimple intheright siderail.
Theamount ofprotrusionofeachpinmaybeadjustedslightly ifneeded.
REMINDER:Donotremoveandconnectinput cablesorspeaker cableswhile isamplifier is
running. Doing sorisksdamagetoyourloudspeakersortheamplifier.
REMINDER:Donotoperatetheamplifier without aloudspeaker orloadresistorattached.
REMINDER:Provideadequateventilationmaynotbesafe.Failure todosomayshortenthe
amplifier’s life,andmayresultintubefailures.Operatingtheamplifier onathickcarpet
will alsocausethis, andisnotsafe.

OPERATION
Soundwill beginapproximately 45 seconds after turnon.
Aswith all highfidelityproducts,thesoundcharacteristicoftheVACchangessomewhatas itwarms
up.Weadviseagainstleavingtheequipment onatall timesforsafetyreasons,andbecauseofthe
attendant accelerationofoutput tubewearandpower consumption.Lifeoftheoutput tubes
averages3,000 to8,000 hours.Forbesttubelife,turntheamplifier off whenyouare notlistening.
AnytimethattheVACPower Amplifier has notbeenusedforafewweeksthesoundmaybe
different.Thisisalsonormalforhighresolutionaudioequipment.Optimumsoundshouldreturnafter
afewhoursofoperation, preferably with anaudiosignal.
PleasenotethatalthoughyourVAC System has beenrun for48 hoursatthefactory, thebreak-in
timeofhighresolutionaudioequipment isinfuriatingly long. TheStatement soundwill continueto
seasonforapproximately 200 hours.Theearly soundoftheamplifier will beless extended,dynamic,
andcoherent.Thenthesoundwill improvenoticeably,followedbyaperiodofdarker sound,finally
giving waytothedesiredmusicality. Patienceisavirtue.
Alsobeaware thatmanycomponentsdisplaytheneedforanewbreakinperiodafter being
transportedinunheatedcargoaircraft.
ILLUMINATEDLOGO
Theilluminationofthefront VAC logosmaybedimmedorturned
off viaaswitchonthebackpanel ofthepower supply.

First, see theSAFETYNOTICEearlier inthemanual.
Output tubesare typeKT88.Replacement output tubesshouldbepurchasedfromVAC. Itis
desirable thattubesbeinmatchedquartetsforeachchannel,andbeclosetothe"bogey"values
forthemajorparameters. Makecertainthateachtubefitsfirmly initssocket.
ALL POWERMUSTBEOFF.Removethetopcagerods andtheoldtubesafter they havecooled
down(THECAGERODSBECOMEQUITEHOT INNORMALUSE;TUBESBECOMEHOT ENOUGHTO
CAUSESERIOUSBURNSWHENINOPERATIONANDMAYTAKESEVERALMINUTESTO COOLDOWN).
Install thenewtubesfirmly andfully inthesockets,observingthatthetubewill only fitintothesocket
inoneorientation,determinedbytheplastic“keyway” inthecenter ofthebase.Donotuse
excessiveforce. Replacethetoprods before operating theamplifier.
Adustthebias control(s)forthenewtubesfully counterclockwise.
Switchontheamplifier andfollowthebias procedure outlinedlater inthismanual.Bias mustbe
checkedandadjustedwhentheamplifier firstturnson,at60 seconds,90 seconds,twominutes,
andfiveminutes.Intheearliestchecks,setthebias sothatthemeter readabittotheleft ofcenter.
Finalsetting shouldbemadeafter 15-30 minutes. Rechecknewtubesdaily forthefirstweek.
Whenever atubeischanged, thebias settingsmustbecheckedandadjusted.
Aslight violetglowinthetubeisnotcauseforconcern.Ifatanytimetheplate(theoutermostmetal
structure) oftheoutput tubesbeginstoglowbright orangeorredSWITCH OFF IMMEDIATELY.The
redglowindicatesthatthetubeis"runningaway",beingdestroyedbyconductingexcessive
current. Tubesmayrun awayforseveralreasons:
1)Thetubeisnotfully insertedinthesocket.
2)Thetubefitsloosely inthesocketandthuscannotmakecorrectcontact.Suchatubeis
unusable.
3)Thetubeisdefective.
Intheevent thattrouble isencounteredcheckconnectionsand/ortry another tube.Stopifthe
problem persistsandconsultwith yourdealer orVAC.

CHECKINGOUTPUTTUBECONDITION/OUTPUTTUBEBIAS ADJUSTMENT
Bias settingsitshouldbecheckedwhenyouinstall youramplifier andapproximately onceevery
month thereafter. Itmustalsobeadjustedeachtimeatubeisreplaced.
TheconditionoftheindividualKT88 output tubesischeckedusingtheTESTswitchandeight built
inindicatorlights(fouroneachsideofthefront panel, adjacent totheadjustment points..
Ifcheckingexistingtubes,allowtheamplifier toreachnormaloperatingtemperature (about ten
minutesofwarmupshouldbesufficient).Ifinstallingnewtubes,see INSTALLINGNEWOUTPUT
TUBES.
Tostart,becertaintostopthemusic;nomusicshouldbeplayingduringtheadjustments.Next,
movetheTESTswitchtotheright.
Startwith theV06 BIAS control.Insertthesuppliedscrewdriver (orasmall flatbladedscrewdriver)
intotheadjustment controlandturninclockwiseuntil theadjacent LEDjustlights;thenturnitslightly
counterclockwiseuntil thelight goesout.Next,gotoV07 BIAS andrepeattheprocedure,andso
on, throughtheV13 BIAS setting.
Becausetheadjustmentscaninteractslightly, recheckall eight tubes, starting with V06.
TheTESTswitchmaybeturnedoff, ormayremainonwhile playingmusic.Ifleft on, thelightswill
illuminateatlowvolumelevelsandappeartoflashwith thebeatofthemusic.Thisisasimple way
tomonitorbias inanongoingfashion; thelightsshouldbeout betweensongs,andcomeonmore
orless equally atlowlevelsofmusic.

REPLACEMENTOFLOWLEVELTUBES
All power mustbeswitchedoff.Allowtubestocooldown.Removethetopglass cover.Remove
andreplacewith newtubesoftheappropriatetypes.Notethatthesetubeshaveacentralplatic
shaft with alocatorridgeononeside;thisridgemustbealignedwith theslotinthesocket.Replace
theglass cover before operating theamplifier.
Theexactcharacteristicofeachtubeandtherelationshipamongthefive6SN7iscriticaltothe
optimalperformanceandbestsoundofyouramplifier.Therefore werecommendobtaining
replacement tubesfrom VAC, specifying thatthey are foruseintheStatement 450 amplifier.

CAREOFCHASSIS
VACchassisare machinedaluminumforsuperiorelectromagneticperformance.Themainchassisand
thefasciaare finishedinanacryliclacquer,similartofineautomobile;similarcare mustbetakenin
wiping orcleaning. THEAMPMUSTBESWITCHEDOFF ANDUNPLUGGED,andatnotimemayany
cleaning materialbeallowedtogetintothetubesocketsorjacks.

TIPS&ADVICESECTION
Tips:Fuses
Youramplifier isdesignedtouse“slowblow”typefuses.Theseare containedinthefusedrawer
builtintothepower receptacle.
Inthefusedrawer are twofuses.Theonefurthersinistheactivefuse.Theonenearer totheoutside
isaspare.
Thefuseratingsare labeledonthebackofthepower supply.Becertaintouseonly thefuserating
applicable toyourlocalac supply voltage.
With ahighpower amplifier, there canbeanappreciable surgeofcurrent forafewmilliseconds
whenpower isswitchedon.Over time,thiscanfatigueafuseandcauseittofail attheinstant that
power isapplied. Thismaybeconsiderednormal.
Ininstallationswhere theac power isexceptionally stiff,youmayfindthatthefuseblowsevery
secondorthirdturnon. Insuchcases, pleasecontactthefactory foradditionaladvice.

Tips:AWordAbout TubesinGeneral
Itistruethateachbrandoftubesounds different inaparticularhighresolutioncircuit.Thisisbecause
notwomanufacturersmakeatubetypeinquitethesameway,andthecentraltendenciesofthe
performanceparameterswill differ slightly with eachmaker.Toemphasize thepoint,examinethe
platestructure ofanytwo6SN7fromdifferent manufacturerswill probably findthatthey maynot
eventhesameshapeandsize.(Becarefulhere,as oftenatubeismadebyafirmother than
indicatedonitslabel.Intheheydayoftubesitwas commontocrossbrandbetweenmajorlabels,
suchas GEandRCA.Todaymanylabelsdonotmanufacture their tubesatall,includingGoldAero
andRAM.)
Thissonicvariabilitymayatfirstseemaliability,but further thought will revealthatitisanadvantage,
justliketheabilitytoadjustVTAonatonearm. Theowner ofatubeamplifier canselectthosetubes
whichsoundliketherealthinginhis/her specificsystem. Ofcourse,ifthemanufacturer youprefer
israre youmaywant topurchaseafewspare tubesforthefuture.
Howlongshouldtubeslast?Ithas longbeenknowninprofessionalcircles(andprobably now
forgotten)thatatubesuchas the12AX7will displaybetter performancecharacteristicsafter two
years ofcontinual operationthanwhenitwas new.Innormaluseitisnotunusualforalowlevel
tubetolast5yearsorlonger.Output tubesare another story,as they are continually providing
significant amountsofcurrent.Here thesoundisyourbestguide.Certainly atubeshouldbe
replacedwhenitsemissionissignificantly downoritstransconductanceissubstantially out of
specification. Innormaluse, output tubeswill lastatleast2yearsandperhaps more than5years.
Itisnormaltosee aslight violetglowinapower tubesuchas aKT88.However,avividviolet
indicatesexcess current flowthroughthetubeandshouldbeinvestigated.
VAC cantesttubesforconcernedcustomers.

Tips:Output Tubes
YourVACAmplifier usestheKT88 kinkless tetrode.Itisstrongly recommendedthatreplacement
tubesbepurchasedonly fromVAC. If,however,youwant tocustomize thesoundtoyourtastes,
beaware thatas with interconnectsandspeaker cables, eachtubemanufacturer'sKT88 tends to
haveadistinctsound, as well as itsownreliabilityprofile.
Tips:LowLevel Tubes
TheVoltageAmplifier/PhaseSplitter anddriver tubesintheStatement isthe6SN7GTmedium mu
octaltwintriode.Youramplifier isfittedwith thecurrent productionVACTested6SN7fromChina,
whichwefindsuperiortotheNOStypeswehavetried.There are dozensofversionsofthistube
available innewoldstock(NOS) fromavarietyofsources.Itwouldbeimpossible tocharacterize
them all.
Thematchesamong thefive6SN7are criticaltotheStatement 450'sperformance. Therefore we
recommendthatreplacement tubesbeobtainedinsetsfrom VAC.

Tips:ImpedanceMatching
Westrongly suggestthatyouexperiment with theavailable impedanceconnectionsforthebest
sonicmatchwith yoursystem. Sincenoloudspeaker representsanunchangingimpedanceatall
frequencies,itisimpossible toassertwith certaintywhichoutput tapisappropriatetouse.Inmany
systemsanamazing differenceinsoundwill existbetweenthevariousimpedancetaps.
Sincetheimpedanceofmostloudspeakersvary over awiderangeexperimentationisessential.
Mostspeakershavearatedimpedanceof4or8ohms.Werecommendstarting with the8ohm
connection; after youknowthesoundifthatconnection, try the4ohm connection. Choosethe
connectionthatsounds besttoyourears.
Ifyoubi-wire yoursystem(run separatespeaker leads fromtheamplifier tothehighandlow
frequencytransducers)youmaydiscover thattwodifferent impedancetaps workbest.
Contrary topopularmisconception, nopower islostduetounusedoutput taps.

Tips:AudioGrounding
Systemsincorporatingsingle-endedinterconnectcables(“RCAcables”) are pronetoaproblem
knownas “groundlooping”,whichcanresultinextraneoushumsandbuzzesaudible throughthe
loudspeaker. Ifthisoccursinyoursystem, youhavetoattempttominimize thegroundloop.
Tominimize thebuzz using thenormalRCAinput jack, there are severalsteps youcantake:
1)Usetheshortestinterconnectspossible.
2)Useinterconnectswith goodshielding properties.
3)Keeptheaudiocablesas closetogether as possible.
4)KeeptheAC cords awayfrom theaudiocables.
5)Try different groundsettingsonyourpreamplifier,ifithas them. Forexample,theVAC
Signature,Phi,andRenaissancepreamplifiersmaybesetto“ungrounded”or“XLR”audio
modes.
6)Theuseofcheater plugsisnotrecommendedandposesasafetyhazard.

TheVACStatement has beendevelopedwith thecriticalearas themajorarbiter ofquality,with
both conventionalanduniquemeasurementsprovidinginsight andguidanceas necessary.Thelack
ofemphasisonmeasurementsisduetothefactthatengineering'sarsenalofequipment and
techniquesdonotoperateonthepatternrecognitionprincipalsthatcontrolhumanperceptionof
sound.
Intheimmortalwords ofDaniel vonRecklinghausen,ifitmeasuresgoodandsounds bad,itisbad.
Ifitmeasuresbadandsounds good, you'vemeasuredthewrong things.
