1.0 Introduction
The SPC4
TM
Model 600A Electronic Load Data Logger System (SPC4
TM
System) is designed to facilitate
the bolted structures’ maintenance process by measuring in real time the clamp load seen in a bolted joint.
The SPC4
TM
System can also store the clamp load values and it can be interfaced with a computer to
download and analyze the previously stored values. The SPC4
TM
System is used in conjunction with
fasteners fitted with load indicating hardware.
The SPC4
TM
System incorporates precision electronic devices. As all attempts have been made to
manufacture these components as rugged as possible, care must be taken in handling the data logger unit, the
displacement transducer and the connecting cabling. Flagrant or abusive handling of these components can
render them inoperable and/or compromise the accuracy of the measured load readings. In addition, the
precision datum disk reference surface machined into the head of each fastener must be kept unimpaired and
clean for accurate measurement of load (see Paragraph 4.0 for recommended cleaning procedures). To this
end, all of the SPC4
TM
load indicating fasteners have been shipped with plastic caps installed to protect the
datum disk surface. These protective caps should always remain on the datum disks and only be removed to
install the electronic displacement transducer for measuring load. After measuring load, the protective caps
should be replaced to keep the datum disk surface clean and to protect it from incidental contact damage.
With proper care and use, this system can provide years of reliable operation. To this end, it is very
important to completely familiarize yourself with the operation of this system before use. Read this manual
carefully and pay particular attention to all precautions and warnings.
1.1 Inspection
During unpacking of the SPC4
TM
System, carefully check each item for damage that may have occurred
in shipment. If anything is damaged or missing, please contact:

-.1.- - CURRENT DATE IN MM/DD/YY FORMAT
This area of the LCD shows the current date in MM/DD/YY format. The current date can only be
changed on the HHU when the HHU is connected to a PC running the ABT-DAQ software (can not be
changed using HHU’s keypad).
-.2.- - CURRENT TIME IN HH:MM:SS FORMAT
This area of the LCD shows the current time in HH:MM:SS format. The current time is displayed in the
“military” format (00:00:00 to 23:59:59, no AM/PM). The current time can only be changed on the
HHU when the HHU is connected to a PC running the ABT-DAQ software (can not be changed using
HHU’s keypad).
-.3.- - MAXIMUM NUMBER OF LOCATIONS / BOLTS
This area of the LCD shows the maximum number of locations / bolts the HHU is set to accept. These
numbers can only be set when the HHU is connected to a PC running the ABT-DAQ software (can not
be changed using HHU’s keypad). The HHU has a maximum storage capability of up to 13,100 records
(1 bolt reading per record). To make it easier for the operator and to save time, these records can be
further divided between a number of “locations” and “bolts”.
For example, let’s suppose we want to record data from a mill having 5 flanges with 20 bolts per flange.
Every flange should be assigned to a location number (1 through 5) and every bolt from any flange will
be assigned a bolt number (1 through 20) – for a total of 100 bolts. Using the ABT-DAQ software set
these numbers of locations and bolts. In the field, if the operator starts with the flange number 1, bolt
number 1, the HHU’s display will automatically go to the next bolt and respectively to the next location
(flange) when all the bolts from one flange have been recorded.
-.4.- - CURRENT LOCATION / BOLT NUMBER
This area of the LCD shows the current record number the HHU is ready to acquire. The numbers
shown here will automatically advance to the next available record after every data acquisition event.
First, the bolt numbers, and after the maximum number of bolts for the current location has been
reached, the location number. The operator can also set these numbers in an out of order fashion using
the “BOLT”, “LOCATION” buttons and the numerical keypad. To advance to one of the next bolts (or
to go back to a previous bolt), the operator can also press the “UP | NEXT” or “DOWN | PREVIOUS”
buttons.
-.5.- - CURRENT LOAD / OTHER MESSAGES
This area of the LCD shows the load read by the probe at any given time. It can also show other
messages (i.e. “No Probe Found” when the probe is not attached to a fastener).

-.4.- - MEMORY FORMAT OPTIONS
The HHU can store up to 13,100 records (total number of readings). You can choose to divide these
readings into a number of locations, every location containing a number of bolts of your choosing. All
locations have to contain the same number of bolts. The minimum number of possible locations is 1 the
maximum is 250.
Using the text boxes in this area, you can select the number of locations and bolts to fit your needs. In
order to accomplish this, first type the number of locations you want to use in the “Locations” box and
then the number of bolts you want to use in the “Bolts” box. ABT-DAQ software will not let you enter
an invalid combination. When ready (with the HHU connected and turned on), click “Re-Format
Memory” to activate your selections.
Tip: In order to save time and to help in manipulating the recorded data, you do not have to use the
maximum number of records (13,100). Instead, choose the minimum numbers you need for both
“Locations” and “Bolts” text boxes (for example: 10 locations and 200 bolts in every location, for
a total number of 2,000 total records).
-.5.- - “SET CLOCK” BUTTON
This button synchronizes the Real Time Clock (RTC) of the HHU with the clock of your computer (the
date/time information of your computer will be sent to the HHU). Please make sure the time and the
date of your computer are correct before using this button. The HHU will use this information when
storing data, so your records' accuracy will be directly dependent of these settings. Also, it is
recommended that you perform this operation as often as possible. The accuracy of the RTC is wildly
affected by the HHU's operating environment.
-.6.- - “HELP” BUTTON
Opens the help file of the ABT-DAQ software.
-.7.- - “EXIT” BUTTON
Exits the ABT-DAQ software. Be aware of the fact that if you change any of the options in the ABT-
DAQ window, they will be automatically saved into a configuration file on your PC when the program
exits (by clicking on the “Exit” button or on the “close” [ .x.] button on the title bar of the program).
These settings are saved when the program exits even if the HHU is powered off or disconnected. This
behavior is by design and cannot be changed.
-.8.- - “ERASE MEMORY” BUTTON
Erases the contents of the HHU’s memory (writes zeros in all 13,100 memory locations). After you
have double-checked the contents of your downloaded data file (open it and inspect the contents of the
file, making sure it contains the data you are expecting), you can click on the “Erase Memory” button to
clear the memory of the HHU. This operation can not be undone.

TIME.extension”.
The “DATE” field is in MM-DD-YY format, and “TIME” field is in HH-MM-SS “military” format
(00:00:00 to 23:59:59, no AM/PM).
For example, one received file could be named “Bolt Data 06-07-09 12-55-18.xls”, which means the
file was downloaded June 7
th
2009 at 12:55:18. You might not be able to see the extension “.xls” (or
“.txt”) if your PC is not set to always show file extensions.

The custom USB cable supplied has a miniature waterproof circular plastic connector (CPC) at one end (the
HHU end) and a standard USB A-type connector at the other end (the PC end). The arrangement of the
terminals can be seen in “Figure 1.3.6 – USB Cable – Connectors (UC)”.
Figure 1.3.7 – CPC Features
The waterproof (when mated or covered by the rubber cap)
CPCs have a built-in lock/release mechanism which securely
locks mated connectors while allowing quick disconnection by
simply pulling on the plug’s release collar. Molded-in grooves
prevent hand slippage when pulled. Multiple polarizing keys
protect the contacts from miss-alignment or attempted
insertion of the wrong connector, while assuring correct
mating between the corresponding connectors (see “Figure
1.3.7 – CPC Features”).
1.3.5 Calibration Gage (CG)
Figure 1.3.8 – Calibration Gage (CG)
The supplied calibration gage - see Figure 1.3.8 - Calibration
Gage (CG) - is used to check the calibration of the hand-held
unit.
When the probe is attached to the end marked “0%”, the 4
th
line of the HHU’s display should read “Load 0%” (or between
–5% and +5%).
When the probe is attached to the end marked “100%”, the 4
th
line of the HHU’s display should read “Load 100%” (or
between 95% and 105%).
2.0 Operation and Measurement
The following paragraphs describe the operation of the SPC4
TM
System, which consists of an electronic
hand-held monitoring unit with a permanently attached displacement transducer (probe), a calibration gage (0%
and 100%), a USB cable and a software CD.
The system is used in conjunction with fasteners fitted with load indicating hardware to monitor and record
the clamp load of the bolted joints. Calibration certificates, supplied with each fastener, enable correlation of the
HHU’s unit percentage readings to joint clamp load (bolt tension) in pounds.

[1] When handling the probe, grip it with your hand in the area of the green arrows as shown in
Figure 2.2.1-A. While the probe is pushed against the datum disk for engagement, slide the exterior sleeve
of the transducer towards the fastener, until it locks the probe on the datum disk of the fastener. To
disengage, grip the probe in a similar manner and simply slide the sleeve in the opposite direction.
It is essential to provide a path for the cable and the cable grip to move freely without crimping or bending.
Do not pull or push the cable of the displacement transducer or the cable grip. Do not use the cable as a
handle to carry the hand-held unit and/or the displacement transducer. Repeated deformation of the cable as
shown in Figure 2.2.1-Bwill cause fracture of the wires in the region marked on the drawing (the red sign
marked “
FRACTURE
”) and render the probe inoperable.
Figure 2.2.1 - Handling the Probe
[2] The shell of the displacement transducer is not insulated. Always be sure that the bolted joint to be
measured has no voltage on it.
[3] To obtain accurate measurements, periodically re-check the calibration as outlined in Paragraph 2.5.
[4] Handle the electronic instruments with care and keep protective caps on the fastener datum disks at all
times.

[5] When changing batteries, always replace all six of them at the same time (do not “reuse” batteries).
[6] It is strongly recommended that you should NOT use any USB hubs to connect the HHU to the PC, instead
use a direct connection to one of the USB ports of your PC.
[7] Do not attempt to clean the probe face or the datum disks by abrading them with emery cloth or sandpaper.
[8] Any attempts of cleaning the hand-held unit should be made in the “OFF” power state (please remove the
batteries) and the USB cable should be disconnected.
[9] Do not use abrasives, solvents or aromatic hydrocarbons to clean the instruments as damage may occur to
the plastic cases. If cleaning is necessary, use only a mild solution of warm water and detergent.
[10] Do not attempt to repair the hand-held unit or the displacement transducer. These units contain no user-
serviceable parts inside the enclosures.

This screen will be shown after a short time (when
the setup program finishes performing the required
operations - this time will be given by the
specifications of your PC).
If you don’t want to automatically launch ABT-
DAQ when you click the “Finish” button, uncheck
the “Launch ABT-DAQ” check-box.
NOTE: If you encounter problems when trying to run ABT-DAQ, you may not have all the Microsoft updates.

2.4 Hand-held Unit (HHU) Setup
[1] With the HHU in the “OFF” power state, connect the HHU to your PC using the supplied USB cable.
[2] Start ABT-DAQ (Data Transfer Program) using the shortcuts created by the setup program and then press
and release the “ON/OFF” button on the HHU.
[3] After power-up, the line 4 on the HHU's display will show “USB […] […] […]” meaning the USB interface
is connected. Also, the “Data Logger Status” of ABT-DAQ window will read “Connected”.
⌦
⌦⌦
⌦
NOTE: If the HHU's display shows "Change Batteries!" the HHU will not enter the USB mode.
If this is the case, please power down the HHU, replace the batteries with a new set and try again.
[4] Click on the “Set Clock” button on the ABT-DAQ window to synchronize the Real Time Clock (RTC) of the
HHU with the clock of your computer (the date/time information of your computer will be sent to the HHU).
[5] The idle timer will automatically power the HHU down after the selected time to conserve batteries (this is
applicable only if the HHU is NOT connected to the PC - in USB mode, the HHU will not power down
automatically). The default setting is 5 minutes. To change this value, make your selection and click on the
“Set Timer” button.

NOTE: The idle timer will start counting after the last key-press is detected on the HHU. Pressing any
button (other than “ON / OFF” or “BACKLIGHT”) will reset the idle timer. Approximately 30
seconds before automatic shutdown, the HHU’s display will show “About to Shutdown”.
[6] Using the “Re-Format Memory” text boxes, you can select the number of locations and bolts to fit your
needs. In order to accomplish this, type the number of locations you want to use in the “Locations” box
and/or the number of bolts you want to use in the “Bolts” box. Click “Re-Format Memory” to activate your
selections.
[7] You can now click “Exit” to power down the HHU and exit ABT-DAQ. Remove the USB cable. This
concludes the initial setup of the HHU.
2.5 System Calibration Check
[1] Install the probe on the supplied calibration gage (on the end marked “0%”) by pushing it against the datum
disk and sliding the exterior sleeve of the probe until it locks in place. The 4
th
line of the display should read
“Load 0%” (or between –5% and +5%), as shown below.
[2] Install the probe on the supplied calibration gage (on the end marked “100%”) by pushing it against the
datum disk and sliding the exterior sleeve of the probe until it locks in place. The 4
th
line of the display
should read “Load 100%” (or between 95% and 105%), as shown below.
NOTE: If the display does not read 0% or 100% (within ±5%), see Paragraph 4.3.
2.6 Low Battery Indication and Under-voltage Lockout
At all times (with the hand-held unit ON), if the battery supply voltage drops below 6.5V (1.08V/cell), the
display of the HHU will toggle between the default screen (the one showing the date, time, location, bolt
number and load) and the “Change Batteries” screen. The operation of the unit is not affected at this point, but
it is recommended to stop operating the system and change the batteries. If the supply voltage drops to less than
5.5V (0.91V/cell), the unit will automatically shutdown and until the batteries are replaced, it will not be
possible to turn it back on.
