Do have the fire installed by a competent person. In the United Kingdom, installation
must be in accordance with the latest edition of the Gas Safety (installation & use)
Regulations. In the Republic of Ireland, installation must be in accordance with all
national and local regulations in force.
Do have the chimney swept prior to installation if it was previously used for solid fuel.
Do have the fire installed in accordance with the installation instructions.
Do provide a minimum clearance as shown in graph 1 above the hearth to any shelf
made of wood or other combustible material. Please bear this in mind if you are
making any alterations to the room.

Do provide a suitable guard which complies with BS 8423 for the protection of young
children, the elderly and the infirm. Such a guard is also recommended for the
protection of pet animals. (Although this fire conforms to all the applicable standards,
it is a heating appliance and certain parts of its surface will become hot.).
Do wait three minutes before attempting to relight if the fire is switched off or the
flames are extinguished for any reason. (Your fire is fitted with a safety device which
will automatically shut off the gas supply to the fire if, for any reason, the flames go
out.).
Do get advice about the suitability of any wall covering near your fire. Soft wall
coverings (e.g. embossed vinyl, etc.) which have a raised pattern are easily affected by
heat. They may, therefore, scorch or become discoloured when close to a heating
appliance. Please bear this in mind whenever you are considering redecorating.
Do provide a minimum side clearance as detailed in figure 1. Please bear this in mind
if ever you are considering altering the room.
Don’t hang clothing, towels or any other fabrics over the fire.
Don’t add any extra coals above the number stated in this guide. This could cause a
safety hazard.
Don’t put paper or any other material on the fire.
Don’t place any combustible material (rugs, carpet, plastic tiles, etc.) on the hearth.
Don’t attempt to clean or service the fire until it has been switched off and allowed to
cool completely.

OPERATING YOUR FIRE
PLEASE NOTE
When operating your fire for the first time, some vapours may be given off which may
cause a slight odour and could possibly set off any smoke alarms in the immediate
vicinity. These vapours are quite normal with new appliances. They are totally
harmless and will disappear after a few hours use.
The Oxysafe flame sensing & flue blockage safety system.
For your safety, this appliance is fitted with a flue blockage safety device which will
shut down the appliance in the event of abnormal flue conditions. This device is NOT
a substitute for an independently mounted Carbon Monoxide detector.
The device will also automatically shut off the gas supply to the fire if the pilot flame
goes out due to lack of oxygen or for any other reason.
If this device starts to repeatedly shut off the gas, get expert advice.
This device incorporates a probe which senses that the heat from the pilot flame is
correct. If this probe is cool, the device will prevent any gas flow unless the pilot
burner control knob is held in at the ignition position.
If, for any reason, the flames go out when the fire is hot or if the fire is turned off when
hot, always wait at least three minutes before attempting to relight.

Aeration Control
This appliance is fitted with a control
which can be set to give a higher or
lower supply of air to the burner (See
6in figure 2).
Maximum aeration is set by pushing
the lever into the lower position as
shown in figure 3.
Minimum aeration is set by slightly
lifting the lever allowing it to spring to
the minimum setting. See figure 3.
We recommend that the aeration
control is always set at the maximum
aeration for at least
the first 15 minutes
to allow the
appliance to
efficiently warm up.
The maximum
aeration setting is
also recommended
when using the
lowest heat setting
or to burn off any
carbon deposits
which may have
built up after
prolonged use at the minimum
aeration setting.

To Light the Fire
The pilot must be lit using the pilot burner knob on the appliance (see figure 2).
The heat and flame settings can be controlled by either using the main burner control
knob on the appliance (see figure 2) or by using the remote control handset (See figure
4). The remote control handset operates by sending an ultrasonic beam. The handset
does not need to be accurately pointed directly at the fire.
Please note: Research has shown that the ultrasonic transmission signal will not cause
any pain or hearing damage to a domestic cat or dog but it may disrupt its normal
behaviour. We, therefore, do not recommend pointing the remote control handset at
any domestic animal or operating the device within one meter of the animal’s ear.
To light the pilot
1. Depress the pilot burner control knob and turn anti-clockwise to the ignition
position (2in figure 2) to activate the piezo ignition system. A ‘click’ will be heard and
the pilot should light. Observe if it is alight by looking through the slots to the left
hand end of the front coals. If the pilot does not light immediately, repeat the above
procedure, keeping the knob depressed for several seconds in order to purge any air
from the system.
If after ten seconds, ignition has not occurred, turn the control knob back to the OFF
position. Wait 30 seconds and then repeat the ignition procedure.
2. When the pilot is alight keep the knob depressed for ten seconds. This will
prevent the flame-sensing device from shutting off the gas while its probe warms up as
explained above.
3. Release the knob. When the knob is released, the pilot should remain alight. If
the pilot fails to remain alight, repeat the ignition procedure, this time keeping the
knob depressed for a longer period of time.
If the pilot flame repeatedly goes out have the fire serviced.
To light the main burner
Once the pilot light is alight and stable, light the main burner by turning the pilot
burner control knob anti-clockwise to the “main burner on” position (3in figure 2).
To select the heat and flame setting
a) Using the appliance manual control: Turn the main burner control knob to
any desired setting between low (4in figure 2) and high (5in figure 2).
b) Using the remote control handset: Press the “lower” or “higher” button to any
desired setting.

To turn back to pilot burner only setting
Either
•Press the “Lower” button on the remote control handset until the main burner goes
out.
•Turn the main burner control knob fully clockwise.
•Turn the pilot burner control knob to the ignition position (2in figure 2). Note that
the remote control handset will not operate with the pilot burner set at this position.
To turn the fire fully off
Turn the pilot burner control knob fully clockwise to the off position (1 in figure 2).

CLEANING
To maintain the high performance and quality finish of your fire please follow these
guidelines:
•Before attempting to clean the fire, please remember to turn off the fire and wait for
the appliance to cool. The fire will retain heat for some time before cleaning can begin.
•If any pieces of debris are found in the firebox, have the chimney inspected before
further use.
Metal Parts
•Clean the metal parts with a slightly damp cloth and then dry.
•Do not use abrasive cleaners as these will scratch the fire surface.
Ceramic Coals
•This product uses fuel effect pieces containing Refractory Ceramic Fibres
(RCF), which are man-made vitreous silicate fibres. Excessive exposure to these
materials may cause irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Consequently, it
is important to take care when handling these articles to ensure that the release of
dust is kept to a minimum.
•Light coatings of soot will usually be burnt off during the normal operation of the
fire.
•Should any soot accumulation become excessive, the fuel effect pieces and rear
wall should be removed from the fire for cleaning.
•Cleaning should be carried out in a well ventilated area or in the open air by gently
brushing with the pieces held away from your face so that you avoid inhaling the dust.
•We do not recommend the use of a normal domestic vacuum cleaner which may
blow dust back into the air.
•We suggest that you remove the coals in the reverse order to that shown in the fuel
bed refitting instructions.
Burner
Remove any deposits of soot or other foreign matter from the surface of the burner
with a soft dry brush. Be careful not to brush any particles into the burner slots.
Remove any particles from the slots with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft brush
attachment. Do not poke wire, etc. into the burner slots.

FUEL BED REFITTING
1. Position the front coal in front of the
burner as shown in figure 5. The front
coal should fit snugly between the
burner and the two raised tabs on the
front edge of the tray.
2. Position the fuel matrix on top of the
burner as shown in figure 6. The bottom
of the matrix rear wall should drop
behind the two square flanges at the top
of the rear legs. Ensure that the
matrix sits flatly on the top of the
burner.
3. Position the dress coals.
There are 4 square coals, 2 “finger”
coals and 15 random shape coals.
Do not let the dress coals fall into
the holes and valleys in the fuel
matrix and front coal.
3.1. Begin the coal build by placing
a square coal in the centre of the
front coal, ensuring that it bridges
across to the matrix as shown in
figure 7.

3.2. Take four random coals and place
along the front coal as shown in figure 8.
Ensure that these coals bridge across from
the front coal to the matrix.
In order to get the best flame effect, it is
important that the coals are evenly
spaced, and have roughly equal gaps
between them.
3.3. Take both finger coals and place one
at each end of the front row of coals as
shown in figure 9. Make sure that they
bridge across from the front coal to
the matrix.
3.4. Take six random shaped coals
and position as shown in figure 10
This second row of coals should rest
on top of the first row, overlapping
by 5-10mm. In order to get the best
flame effect, it is important that the
coals are evenly spaced, and have
roughly equal gaps between them.

3.5. NATURAL GAS
MODELS ONLY: Take
five random shaped coals
and arrange as shown in
figure 11. These coals
should overlap the previous
row by 5-10mm. In order to
get the best flame effect, it
is important that the coals
are evenly spaced, and have
roughly equal gaps between
them.
LPG MODELS ONLY:
Take three random
coals and position in the
centre of the matrix,
spaced 10-15mm from
each other to make the
third row (See figure
11). Discard the two
remaining random
coals.
3.6. Finally, take the
three remaining square
coals and position at the
back of the matrix as
shown in figure 12.
These coals should also
overlap the previous
row by 5-10mm. In
order to get the best
flame effect, it is important that the coals have roughly equal gaps between them.

MAINTENANCE
Battery Replacement – Remote
Control Receiver
The remote control receiver requires four
AA batteries. To ensure maximum
battery life and optimum performance we
recommend “Long Life” batteries.
To replace the batteries:
•Remove the bottom front casting and
“ash pan” cover.
•Slide the receiver unit from its
location box at the bottom right side
of the fire (see figure 13).
•Slide open the receiver unit cover.
•Replace with new batteries fitting the
firmly to the connectors.
•Replace the receiver cover
•Refit the receiver unit into its location
box making sure that the sensor is at
the left side (see figure 13).
Battery Replacement – Remote
Control Handset
The remote control handset requires one PP3 battery. To ensure maximum battery life
and optimum performance we recommend “Long Life” batteries.
To replace the battery remove the cover from the bottom of the handset. Exchange the
battery and refit the cover.

Regular maintenance
•In order to achieve and maintain high levels of personal safety and performance
efficiency, it is essential that the opening at the back of the fire and the flue are kept
clear of any form of obstruction. It is possible that deposits of mortar or soot could fall
and accumulate causing the flue to be blocked or restricted and so preventing proper
clearance of dangerous exhaust fumes.
•In the United Kingdom it is the law that a landlord must have any gas appliance,
flue and pipework which is situated in a tenant’s premises checked for safety at least
every twelve months by a competent person (In the U.K, a CORGI registered
installer).
•We recommend that all gas appliances and their flues, wherever situated, are checked
annually.
•If you require your fire to be serviced, please contact British Gas or Scottish Gas.
