Purpose
This document describes the process for replacing the power cable to the NetBackup 5240 Appliance
and the NetBackup 5240 Storage Shelf.
Affected Models
NetBackup 5240 Appliance
The NetBackup 5240 Appliance is a hardware and software storage system that can scale to 220 TB
of available backup capacity. It consists of a NetBackup 5240 Appliance and up to four optional
NetBackup 5240 Appliance Storage Shelves. By itself, the 2U NetBackup 5240 Appliance offers
internal data storage from 4TB to 27TBs, depending on the storage configuration you purchase. When
additional storage is required, you can attach up to four 2U storage shelves to the NetBackup 5240
Appliance. Each NetBackup 5240 Appliance Storage Shelf offers 49TBs of backup storage capacity.
Attaching four storage shelves offers 196TBs of storage, in addition to the internal storage that is
available with the NetBackup 5240 Appliance.
SAS-3 cables are used to connect the NetBackup 5240 Appliance to the storage shelves. SAS-3
cables are also used to connect the storage shelves to each other.

Warning: You must also unplug the unit from all AC power sources before you remove the cover. If
the power cords are still connected, internal standby voltages could harm personnel and equipment.
NetBackup 5240 Storage Shelf
The NetBackup 5240 Storage Shelf is a 2U12 drive enclosure that contains twelve 6TB 7200 rpm
SAS hard disk drives. Available backup storage capacity of the storage shelf is 49TBs. Each disk
drive can be accessed from the storage shelf's front panel. An embedded RAID controller is used to
configure the disk drives into a RAID 6 configuration. One of the disk drives is reserved as a hot spare.

Onsite Policies and Procedures
Electrical safety
The static discharged by human bodies can damage static-sensitive components on the boards.
When installing and maintaining the equipment, observe appropriate electrostatic safety precautions
to prevent personnel injuries or device damage.

When operating a device in an electrostatic sensitive area, you must take electrostatic-discharge
(ESD)-preventive measures. These include wearing ESD-preventive gloves, an ESD-preventive wrist
strap, and ESD-preventive clothes to avoid personnel injury or device damage.
To prevent damage to the device, pay attention to the following during operations:
• Do not touch devices with bare hands because ESD from the human body may damage the
electrostatically sensitive elements on a board.
• When dealing with the server or any of the internal components, wear an ESD-preventive wrist
strap, ESD-preventive gloves, and ESD-preventive suit.

Removing and replacing a NetBackup 5240 Appliance and a NetBackup 5240
Storage Shelf power cable
This document describes how to replace a NetBackup 5240 Appliance and NetBackup 5240 Storage
Shelf power cable while the system is operating. Before replacing an appliance power cable, ensure
that one of the power cables to the appliance must be operating at all times. If both power cables
must be removed at the same time, the shutdown procedure must be performed on the appliance
before a power cable is removed.
Similarly before replacing a NetBackup 5240 Storage Shelf power cable, ensure that one of the power
cables to each storage shelf must be operating at all times. If both power cables must be removed
at the same time on the storage shelf, ensure that there are no I/O operations on the appliance in
progress, and then turn off the storage shelf.
This repair can be accomplished with the appliance installed in the rack.
Note: If the appliance has attached storage shelves, the storage shelves do not need to be powered
down while the appliance is being serviced.

Requirements
• NetBackup 5240 Appliance replacement power cable
• NetBackup 5240 Storage Shelf replacement power cable
To remove the power cable
1Locate and identify the appliance or the storage shelf that has the faulty power cable as follows:
• Have the customer take you to the unit with the failed component.
• Verify the NetBackup 5240 Appliance serial number. The serial number begins with the letters
VTAS, and is located on a label on the rear panel of the appliance.

• Verify the NetBackup 5240 Storage Shelf serial number. The serial number appears on a
plastic tab that you pull out from Power Cooling Module 0 (PCM 0). The storage shelf serial
number begins with the letters SH.
2If you want to remove the faulty power cable from the NetBackup 5240 Appliance, do the following:
Warning: Swap one power cable at a time only. If you need to remove both power cables, make
sure that the appliance is turned off before you proceed.
Pull the faulty power cable from the appliance power supply socket. The LED on the power supply
shows an amber light when the power cable is faulty or when there is no power cable.

3If you want to remove the faulty power cable from the storage shelf, do the following in the order
listed:
Warning: Swap one power cable at a time only. If you need to remove both power cables, make
sure that the appliance is turned off before you proceed.
• On the Power Cooling Module, use the On/Off switch to turn off the power before you
disconnect the power cable.
• Disconnect the faulty power cable. The amber lights signify an AC and a DC failure. This may
happen when the power cable is faulty or when there is no power cable.
To install the power cable
1Remove the replacement power cable from any wrapping.
2Ensure that the AC power supply input for the appliance is within one of these ranges:
• 100 - 127 VAC at 50/60 Hz, 8.2 A
• 200 - 240 VAC at 50/60 Hz, 4.4 A
3If you want to install the replacement power cable for the NetBackup 5240 Appliance, do the
following:
• Connect the replacement power cable to the appliance power supply socket.
• Connect the other end of the cord to the appropriate AC power source as defined by the
customer.
4If you want to install the replacement power cable for the NetBackup 5240 Storage Shelf, do the
following:
Do the following in the order listed:
• Connect the power cord to the power supply socket.

• Connect the other end of the cord to the appropriate AC power source as defined by the
customer.
• On the Power Cooling Module, use the On/Off switch to turn on the power.
5The LED on the power supply should come on and turn green for the appliance and the storage
shelf respectively.
6Contact the customer and confirm that they are satisfied with the repair. If the customer is not
available, contact Veritas Support.
After completing the hardware replacement procedures, Veritas recommends that you do the following:
• Remove all boxes and shipping containers from the installation area.
• Recycle materials as much as possible.
• Return any equipment or tools as needed.
