VERITAS Access 3340 Manual

Replacing a faulty SAS3 data cable between a 3340 compute node
and the 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf
Document Number: 240
Version 1.0 (03/05/18)
Purpose
This document describes the process for replacing a faulty SAS3 data cable between a 3340 compute
node and the 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf.
Affected appliance models
• 3340 Appliance
Electrical Safety
The static discharged by human bodies can damage static-sensitive components on the boards.
When installing and maintaining the equipment, observe appropriate electrostatic safety precautions
to prevent personnel injuries or device damage.
When operating a device in an electrostatic sensitive area, you must take electrostatic-discharge
(ESD)-preventive measures. These include wearing ESD-preventive gloves, an ESD-preventive wrist
strap, and ESD-preventive clothes to avoid personnel injury or device damage.
To prevent damage to the device, pay attention to the following during operations:
• Do not touch devices with bare hands because ESD from the human body may damage the
electrostatically sensitive elements on a board.
• When dealing with the server or any of the internal components, wear an ESD-preventive wrist
strap, ESD-preventive gloves, and ESD-preventive suit.
About removing and replacing a faulty SAS3 cable between a 3340
compute node and the 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf
This section describes how to remove and replace damaged or faulty SAS3 data cables between a
3340 compute node and the 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf while the appliance operates. Because of
1
Veritas Appliance
Hardware Service Procedure
SAS3 cable redundancy, you can replace the damaged or the faulty SAS3 data cables without shutting
down the entire appliance system.
Review the following:
•SAS3 cables are used to connect both 3340 Appliance compute nodes to the Veritas 5U84 Primary
Storage Shelf.
• Remove and replace one SAS3 cable at a time.
• You can remove and replace the SAS3 cables with the appliance in the rack.
Requirements
The following items are required.
Verify you have the following items
1. Replacement SAS3 data cable
2. ESD wrist strap
3. Paper and pen or pencil
Use the paper and pen to note the SAS3 ports on both the compute node and the 5U84 Primary
Storage Shelf that the faulty SAS3 cable connects to. The replacement SAS3 cable connects to
the same ports.
Locating the appliance with the faulty component
Use the following steps to locate the appliance with the faulty component.
To locate the appliance with the faulty component
1Contact the Veritas Field Service Coordinators to let them know that you have arrived at the
customer site.
2Have the customer take you to the unit with the faulty component.
3Verify the appliance compute node serial number. The serial number is located on the rear panel
of the appliance and begins with the letters VTAS.
2
HSP 240 - SAS3 cable replacement between a 3340 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf and a 5U84 Expansion Storage Shelf
If the work order provides the 5U84 Storage Shelf serial number, verify that the serial number on
the work order matches the serial number on the storage shelf. The Veritas Serial Number is
located in the lower right hand corner of the shelf’s rear panel under the power supply.
Removing the faulty SAS3 data cable
Use the following procedure to remove the faulty SAS3 data cable.
Warning: Remove and replace only one SAS3 data cable at a time, or the data transmission may be
interrupted.
To remove the faulty SAS3 data cable
1At the rear of the 3340 compute node, identify the damaged or the faulty SAS3 data cable that
needs to be replaced.
2Identify and note on a piece of paper the compute node SAS3 port where the faulty cable connects.
3Identify and note on the same paper the 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf SAS3 port to which the
other end of the faulty cable connects.
3
HSP 240 - SAS3 cable replacement between a 3340 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf and a 5U84 Expansion Storage Shelf
Also note the orientation of the blue tab on the SAS3 cable. When you connect the replacement
cable to the SAS3 port on the compute node, the blue tab must be positioned underneath the
cable connector.
4To remove the cable from the SAS HBA in the compute node, grasp the blue tab and gently pull
the cable out of the SAS3 port.
5At the opposite end of the SAS3 cable, grasp the blue tab on top of the connector that connects
to the SAS3 RAID controller in the 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf and gently pull the cable out of
the SAS3 port.
4
HSP 240 - SAS3 cable replacement between a 3340 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf and a 5U84 Expansion Storage Shelf
Note: When you connect the replacement cable to the SAS3 port on the SAS3 RAID controller
in the 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf, the blue tab must be positioned on top of the cable
connector.
6After removing the faulty SAS3 cable, place it aside.
Installing the replacement SAS3 data cable
Use the following procedure to remove the faulty SAS3 data cable.
To install the replacement SAS3 data cable
1Locate and remove the new SAS3 data cable from its packing material and inspect the cable for
any damage.
2Gently plug one end of the replacement SAS3 data cable into the SAS3 port on the rear of the
5U84 Primary Storage Shelf's SAS3 RAID controller.
Note: When attaching the SAS3 data cable to the SAS3 port, ensure that you orient the SAS3
data cable connector so that the connector accepts the notch in the SAS3 port. Review the
following picture for the correct orientation. Note that in some cases, depending on the location
of the SAS3 port notch, the SAS3 data cable blue tab may be oriented above or below the SAS3
data cable connector.

HSP 240 - SAS3 cable replacement between a 3340 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf and a 5U84 Expansion Storage Shelf
Note: Refer to your notes for the correct SAS3 port in which to install one end of the replacement
SAS3 data cable.
Warning: When plugging the cable connector into the SAS3 port on the 5U84 Primary Storage
Shelf's SAS3 RAID controller, the cable connector's blue tab must be oriented above the
connector.

HSP 240 - SAS3 cable replacement between a 3340 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf and a 5U84 Expansion Storage Shelf
3At the opposite end of the SAS3 cable, grasp the connector and slide it into the compute node's
SAS3 port on the SAS3 HBA card from which you removed the faulty SAS3 cable.
Note: Refer to your notes for the correct SAS3 HBA port in which to install the end of the
replacement SAS3 data cable.
Warning: When attaching the SAS3 data cable to the SAS3 HBA card port, ensure that you orient
the SAS3 data cable connector so that the connector accepts the notch in the SAS3 HBA card
port.
When plugging the cable connector into the SAS3 HBA card port on the compute node, the cable
connector's blue tab will be oriented underneath the connector. Review the following pictures
for the correct SAS3 data cable orientation.

4If you replaced the faulty SAS3 cable with the 3340 Appliance operating, check the Activity light
on the 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf's SAS3 RAID controller. The ACTIVITY LED should be on or
blinking and the FAULT LED should be off.
