PREFACE
First of all we wish to thank you for the trust you placed in us by selecting one of our wheelchairs.
The electric wheelchairs supplied by Vermeiren are the result of research and experience over many
years. During the development simplicity of operation and servicing have been emphasized in
particular.
But the expected working life of your vehicle depends essentially on your care and maintenance. This
instruction manual will help you to get acquainted with the operation of your wheelchair and advise
you about keeping your electric wheelchair in a good operational condition to ensure a long working
life.
This instruction manual reflects the latest stage of development of the product. However, our firm,
Vermeiren, reserves the right to introduce changes without any obligation to adapt or replace
previously delivered models.
Kindly keep in mind that your wheelchair will be in an excellent working condition and function
perfectly even after many years, if you follow our advice.
If you have any further questions, kindly consult your specialist dealer.

GENERAL NOTES
With the lightweight "Eclips X4" wheelchair you have acquired a wheelchair developed entirely for your
comfort. The "Eclips X4" model has been designed for individual indoor and outdoor use by disabled
persons and for the conveyance of other people. This wheelchair can be adjusted to individual
requirements as explained below. Thus please read the instruction manual carefully to acquaint
yourself with your wheelchair.
APPLICABILITY
In addition to the multiplicity of equipment and accessories the modular construction allows it to be
used by persons disabled by
Paralysis
Loss of limbs (leg amputation)
Limb defects / Deformation
Stiff or damaged joints
Diseases like heart problems, poor circulation, disturbance of balance or "Cachexiae" as well
as for aged persons.
When providing for individual requirements

THE OPERATING ELEMENTS
The lightweight wheelchair is delivered fully assembled. Only the footrests or other accessories have
to be fitted (see the relevant description).
Your specialist dealer delivers the wheelchair fully assembled and informs you about the various
operating elements and their use. For your own safety we once more provide a detailed explanation of
the various structural parts.

PUSHING HANDLES
Only with height adjustable pushing handles.
The tube handle (1) is fixed to the back frame (2).
Loosen all the fixing screws (3), including those
provided for suspending the armrests (4).
Now you can pull the tube handle to the desired
height and retighten all the fixing screws (3).
Make sure that the handle tubes (1) are positioned
identically on both sides and that all fixing screws are
properly tightened.
Kindly consult your specialist dealer about the ideal
height of the pushing handle. He would gladly assist
you further.
Check that all screws are fixed securely.
Only with height adjustable pushing handles.
If fitted with height adjustable pushing handles, loosen
the screw handles (1) and pull the pushing handle (2)
to the desired position.
Then retighten the screw handles.
Check that all screws are fixed securely.
iThe back seatbelt cannot be adjusted. The
back height (BH: 30cm, 35cm, 40cm) must
be indicated when ordered.
ADJUSTABLE BACK HEIGHT
The height of the back can be adjusted by setting the entire back tube (see the section on "Pushing
handle").
For adjusting the height of the back cover, loosen the fixing screws behind the back tube. Then you
can move the cover upwards or downwards. There are fixing holes every 2 cm in the back tube where
the screws can be retightened. Make sure that all screws are properly tightened before using the
wheelchair.
Only your specialist dealer may adjust the height of the back.

SEAT
The seat frame can be set at different heights. To lock
the distance between the back frame and the seat,
fold the flap of the backrest under the seat (Velcro
fastening).
To change the seat cover, remove the screw at the
front end of the seat frame. Then pull the locking pin
out. Now the seat can be removed by pulling it gently
forwards. Do the reverse when you want to replace
the seat.
Check that all screws are fixed securely.
SEAT DEPTH
To adjust the seat depth,
loosen the screws (5) and/or
loosen the screws (4), pull out
the front of the frame (2), and
pull out the back frame (1).
The front and rear sockets on
the basic frame (3) for the
hinged tubes (seat) must also
be loosened (7). If you have
chosen adjustable axle
adapter (6) for your model,
you will alsoneed to loosen it
when adjusting your seat
depth. After setting the
required seat depth, retighten
the relevant screws. At the
bottom of the back there is a
flap that can be attached
below the seat with a Velcro
fastener, thereby closing the
gap between the seat and the
back. It is not necessary to
adjust the seat.
Check that all screws are fixed securely.
All adjustments must be made by authorized specialist dealers.
We shall decline all liability for damage and injuries caused by adjustments performed by
unauthorized persons.

STEERING WHEEL ADAPTER
The height of the seat can be adjusted in front of the axle. The inclination of the seat can also be
adjusted when setting the steering wheel adapter.
Adjustment of the height and the angle of the seat (Fig.
The steering wheel adapter (1) is situated at the bottom end of the front frame (2). The height of the
adapter can be adjusted after loosening the fixing screws (3). It should be secured again with the
fastening board. Please take note of the sunken threads in this board (4).

This figure illustrates the principle. The position of the thread in the fastening boards is indicated by a
number.
AShows the frame when the seat is horizontal and the adapter perpendicular to the ground.
BShows the frame when the seat is tilted slightly and the adapter is perpendicular (caster
angle).
Make sure that the fastening board is identical on both front wheel adapters and, before using the
wheelchair, that all fixing screws have been tightened properly.
THE AXLE ADAPTER OF THE DRIVING WHEELS
The rear wheels can be mounted at various heights by means of an adjustable axle block, resulting in
different seat heights and/or seat angles. In addition, the rear axle and the back can be mounted in
such a way that tipping over is prevented.

The driving wheels are mounted in an axle adapter (1) at the bottom of the back frame (2). Loosen the
fixing screws (3), push the axle adapter (1) upwards or downwards to the desired height and then
secure it with the fixing screws (3). Make sure that all screws are properly tightened before using the
wheelchair.
When you adjust the driving wheels, the position of the wheels will be altered: Danger of
tipping!
Axle and back lowering (approx. 6 cm) (Fig.
The driving wheels are mounted in an axle adapter (1) at the bottom of the back frame (2). Loosen the
fixing screws (3). Turn the axle adapter (1) backwards until the axle mounting is behind the back
frame, but place the adapter on the other back tube. Now secure with the fixing screws (3) and axle
adapter (1). Make sure that all screws (3) are properly tightened before using the wheelchair.
The brakes must be readjusted !
ADJUSTABLE AXLE ADJUSTER
To adjust the seat height, you have to set the height
of both the steering (see chapter on Steering Wheel
Adjuster) and driving wheels. If your wheelchair
features an adjustable axle adjuster, its height can
be adjusted by loosening screws (1) and (2) and
setting the adjuster to the required height.
Afterwards retighten the screws. If you change the
axle mountings (3) to alter the wheel suspension,
please note that your wheelchair might become
prone to tilting and tipping. To prevent this, also
mount an anti-tipping device.
Check that all screws are fixed securely.
The brakes must be readjusted.
When performing adjustments, avoid all improper settings as they will put the wheelchair user
at risk.
All adjustments must be made by authorized specialist dealers.
We shall decline all liability for damage and injuries caused by adjustments performed by
unauthorized persons.
We shall decline all liability for fitted parts not supplied or passed by the manufacturer.
If the wheelchair is prone to tilting and tipping, an anti-tipping device must be fitted. To this
intent use the screws supplied for the anti-tilting support.

LEG SUPPORTS
To mount the leg supports, place them sideways with
the bolts (1) in the sockets of the frame tube (2). Now
turn the leg supports slowly inwards until the locking
block (3) slides over the suspension block (4). The
release lever (5) engages automatically when the end
position is reached. If the release lever (5) does not
engage, push it gently in the direction of the frame
tube.
To unbolt the leg supports, press the release lever (5)
gently downwards and turn the leg supports outwards
or inwards.
Before use, make sure that the leg supports are securely locked in place.
Adjusting the footplates
The footplates (6) can be set at different heights. Loosen the screw on the footplate. Now move the
boards backwards or forwards by about 3 cm. It should be secured again with the fixing screws.
Depending on the steering wheel combination and the adjustment of the steering wheel adapter, the
footplate cannot be pushed backwards since it would obstruct the steering wheel.
Distance below the thigh
To adjust the length of the leg supports, remove screw (7), which holds the leg support, pull the inner
tube (8) to the desired position, and secure again by means of screw (7). Before use, make sure that
all screws are tightened properly.
Kindly consult your specialist dealer about the correct adjustment of your leg supports. He would
gladly aid you and advise you about other available leg support systems.
Before use, make sure that the leg supports are securely locked in place.
Never grasp the wheelchair by the leg supports when picking it up for transportation, but only
by solid frame parts (see also the chapter "For your safety".)
Make sure that the footplates are at least 6 cm above the ground to avoid contact with the
ground when driving; such contacts may cause damage and endanger the operational security
of the wheelchair. Furthermore, the patient might also be injured.

ARMRESTS
In the standard model the armrests can be folded down to the rear or removed backwards. The
locking device (2) (Fig. ) mounted on frame tube (1) is used to secure the armrests. It can be used on
any of a number of armrests and for different seat depth settings, or be folded up and mounted on the
opposite side (with changeover from B03/B05 to B02).
Removing the armrests (Fig. /Fig. )
Press the operating lever (1) of the armrest locking device (2). Pull the armrest up and out, or fold it
away to the rear.
Do the opposite when replacing the armrest, but note that the rear bolt of the armrest (3) is inserted
first before the front bolt (4) is lowered into the armrest socket (2). If the operating lever (1) does not
lock automatically after emplacing the armrest, secure it manually.
When positioning an armrest, note that there is a guiding and stopping block behind the back tube,
which ensures the lateral stability of the armrests. The supporting belts are located on the rear armrest
tube. When tilted, the armrest cannot really help.
When other armrests are used, the armrest socket can be shifted along the frame tube. Loosen the
fixing screw, adjust the length of the armrest, and retighten as required. The sockets can also be
rotated horizontally and fixed on to the opposing frame tube (interchange B02 with B03, and vice
versa).
Before use, make sure that the armrests are securely locked in place.
Never grasp the wheelchair by the armrests when picking it up for transportation, but only by
solid frame parts (see also the chapter "For your safety".)
PARKING BRAKES
As part of the standard range each driving wheel of your wheelchair is equipped with a parking brake.
These should be adjusted to the actual tyres used
pneumatic tyres or
puncture-free tyres ("PU" solid rubber)

Parking brake / pneumatic tyres
When pneumatic tyres are used, the parking brake can only function when the tyre pressure is
sufficient (see the section "Technical data").
Make sure that the tyre pressure always corresponds to the values given in the section
"Technical details", otherwise the effectiveness of the parking brakes might be reduced or
might even be non-existent.
Note that the parking brakes are not supposed to be used for reducing speed when riding.
Their real function is to prevent the wheelchair from rolling away when it is parked. If the
parking brakes are activated while traveling, it might cause injury and/or damage.
If the brakes have lost their effectiveness because of wear and tear and/or damage to the tyres and
inner tubes, we advise you to consult your specialist dealer to renovate the system, since he has the
necessary tools and expertise.
Improper maintenance or the use of unsuitable tools might cause damage and/or loss of
function.
If you want to adjust the parking brakes yourself, loosen the two Allen screws that fix the brake
suspension to the frame tube by means of a suitable Allen key. Now push the entire braking rail to the
desired position and retighten the two Allen screws. Check whether the desired braking action has
been obtained.
Brake adjustments undertaken by unauthorized persons are done at your own risk. The
manufacturer shall decline all liability.
Rather let your parking brakes be adjusted by a specialist dealer since he is trained on our
products and will respect all relevant safety prescriptions.
Parking brake / solid rubber "PU" tyres
When using solid rubber tyres, the parking brake can only function when the distance between the
brake rubber and the tyre surface is adjusted in such a way that the wheels cannot move when the
brake is activated. The brake rails can be adjusted by using suitable tools (see "parking brake /
pneumatic tyres"). For reasons of safety we advise that you let your specialist dealer undertake this
job.
Note that the parking brakes are not supposed to be used for reducing speed when riding.
Their real function is to prevent the wheelchair from rolling away when it is parked. If the
parking brakes are activated while traveling, it might cause injury and/or damage.
If you are not happy with the braking behavior of your wheelchair, consult your specialist dealer
immediately; he will adjust the brakes for you.
If the wheels (pneumatic or solid rubber) are soiled by water, oil, or other kinds of dirt, the
effectiveness of the parking brakes is impaired. Check the condition of the wheels every time
before using the wheelchair.
If the brakes lose their effectiveness because of wear and tear and/or damage to the
tyres/inner tubes, kindly consult your specialist dealer since special machines are required for
changing the "PU" tyres. The end-user is not able to change the "PU" tyres.
TYRES
The lightweight wheelchair is available in various wheel combinations. The standard wheel
configuration is 24" x 1 3/8 driving wheels and 8" x 1 1/4 steering wheels. Kindly consult your specialist
dealer for other wheel combinations; he would gladly advise you about the best configuration for your
individual requirements.
Always make sure that the wheels are sufficiently inflated since it could affect the driving
behavior (see the chapter on "Technical details").
We decline all liability for wheels not supplied by the manufacturer.

TYRE CHANGING
If you want to change the tyres or inner tubes, please note the following:
After letting all the air out of the tube, insert a tyre lever between the tyre and the rim for the purpose
of removing the tyre. Then slowly and gently push the tyre lever downwards. This will pull the tyre over
the edge of the rim. The tyre will jump out if you then push the lever along the rim. Now it is easy to
remove the tyre and then the tube.
The tube can be pulled out when it contains no more air.
Improper handling might damage the rim. It is best to let a trained mechanic undertake this
task.
Note the following before inserting the new inner tube:
Check the bed of the rim and the inside of the tyre for foreign objects and clean them thoroughly if
necessary. Check the condition of the rim bed, especially around the air valve hole.
Use genuine parts only. We decline all liability for damage caused by non-genuine parts. Contact your
specialist dealer.
FITTING:
Push the rim belt over the air valve of the tube and
then insert it into the rim. Now the rim belt can be
fitted easily. Check that all spoke heads are covered
(a rim belt is not required in the case of a plastic rim).
Push the tyre over the edge of the rim, starting behind
the air valve. Then inflate the tube just sufficiently to
assume its round shape and place it inside the tyre.

If the tube fits snugly inside the tyre without any folds
(in the case of folds: deflate it somewhat), then, using
both hands, push the upper side of the tyre gently
over the rim, again starting opposite the valve.
Check all around on both sides to make sure that the tube is not pinched between the edge of the tyre
and the rim. Push the valve gently inwards and pull it out again to ensure that the tyre is fitted properly
in the region of the valve.
When inflating the wheel, you should at first only pump enough air that it is still possible to press the
tyre inwards with your thumbs. Then check the control line on both sides of the tyre. If it is spaced
evenly around the rim, the tyre is mounted concentrically. If not, let out the air and repeat the process.
Now inflate the tyre to its maximum operating pressure (note the correct pressure!!) and replace the
valve cap.
When mounting a tyre, make sure that no objects or body parts are pinched between the tyre
and the rim, since that could cause damage and/or injury.
Only trained mechanics can guarantee that the tyre is fitted properly. Any guarantee claim is
voided when the work has not been done by a specialist dealer.
Always inflate the tyres to the correct operating pressure. This can be read on the sidewall of
the tyre (also refer to the "Technical details").
Use only inflating equipment complying with regulations and indicating the pressure in bar, or
use the supplied air pump. We decline all liability for damage caused by inflating equipment
not supplied by the manufacturer.
TRANSPORTING THE WHEELCHAIR
When transporting your wheelchair, you should note the following:
Before picking up the wheelchair all movable parts must be removed (foot supports, armrests, etc.).
The wheelchair should only be grasped by solid frame parts when it is lifted up.
To prevent damage, the leg supports and armrests must be detached during transportation.
When reassembling, make sure that all screws are retightened properly.
If you require to be moved upwards or downwards on a staircase, tip the wheelchair slightly
backwards. The wheelchair can then be rolled forwards step by step on the driving wheels. A second
person is required to secure the wheelchair in front by taking hold of the front of the frame after
removing the leg supports.
At least two helpers are always required for negotiating steps or staircases.
Note that, after detaching the foot supports, the legs of the user are not secured; danger of
injury !!

Use suitable personal safety belt systems for transportation (information can be obtained from
your specialist dealer).
When being transported, sit quietly in your wheelchair and avoid jerky movements.
If your illness or disability prevents you from sitting quietly during transportation (e.g. slight
spasticity, etc.), at least two more helpers are required for your safety, one on each side
holding on to solid frame parts.
Your legs and arms must not protrude outside the wheelchair during transportation.
During transportation no persons or objects may be located beneath the wheelchair to prevent
injury or damage to the wheelchair.
MOVING ON RAMPS
If you are considering ramps for overcoming obstacles, kindly note the following:
For your own safety you should drive on ramps at the slowest speed required only.
If a helper is pushing you, you must realize that the weight of the wheelchair increases the forces that
might cause it to roll backwards.
If the helper is unable to push the wheelchair up a ramp, you should immediately engage the parking
brake.
Note the information about the maximum load when driving on ramps.
Use a restraining belt to secure yourself in your wheelchair.
We decline all liability for injury or damage caused by an improper choice of ramps.
ACCESSORIES
ARMRESTS
Depending on the purpose, various armrests can be fitted. They are simply hung on the suspensions
provided on the back tube (see the chapter on "Armrests").
B02- Long side parts with a long resting place for the arm provide protection against falling out
when the wheelchair is overturned.
B03- Desk armrests are available which allow you to drive against a table without having to detach
the armrests.
B05- These armrests can be adjusted to the length of your arms and thus allow you always to rest
your forearms.
Your specialist dealer will gladly advise you on the kind of armrest most suitable for you.
LEG SUPPORTS
We also have various different leg supports from which you can choose one which would suit your
individual requirements best.
B06- Standard detachable leg supports that can be swung aside.
BZ8- Leg supports of which the angle and the height is individually adjustable. For this purpose they
are equipped with adjustable calf plates. In addition, the angle of the footplates can be
adjusted to the inclination of the foot.
BZ7- These leg supports are similar to the BZ8 but are approx. 12 cm longer to accommodate tall
patients with long lower legs.
PERSONAL RESTRAINING SYSTEM
For your safety we offer a safety belt (B58) fitted with loops for pulling over the backrest tube. In
addition to ease of operation the spring lock provides a high level of safety.

PREVENTION OF TIPPING
For your safety we also offer the possibility of preventing the wheelchair from tipping over backwards.
This device (B78) is simply mounted on the bottom tube of the back frame. We recommend this fitting
for restless patients or inexperienced users. Your specialist dealer would gladly advise you about the
meaningfulness of such a system for you.
Our extensive range of accessories provides further possibilities for individual requirements. Contact
your specialist dealer. He would gladly advise you.
FOR YOUR SAFETY
You should take note of the following safety hints for your own security:
To prevent injury and/or damage to your wheelchair, make sure that no objects and/or body
parts are caught in the spokes of the driving wheels.
Do not step on the footplates when getting into or out of the wheelchair. The footplates should
be folded up or the entire foot support must be swung aside beforehand.
You should investigate the effects of shifting the center of gravity on the behavior of the
wheelchair, for example on gradients, on laterally sloping ground, or when overcoming
obstacles, only when a helper is present to secure and support you.
When picking up objects lying in front of, next to, or behind the wheelchair, take care that you
do not lean too far out because of the danger of tipping over as the center of gravity is
displaced.
Use your wheelchair only according to regulations. Avoid, for example, driving at full speed
against an obstacle (step or curb) without braking, and do not jump down from a ledge or a
landing.
Stairs may only be negotiated with the aid of attendants. If alternatives like ramps or lifts are
available, use them.
Check the profile depth and the inflation pressure of the tyres.
Kindly obey traffic regulations when traveling on public roads.
As in the case of driving other vehicles, you should not be under the influence of alcohol or
medical drugs when riding in your wheelchair. This also applies to indoor driving.
When traveling outdoors, adapt your driving to weather and traffic conditions.
When transporting the wheelchair, never pick it up by grasping movable parts (armrests, leg
supports, etc.), but take hold of solid frame parts only.
To be better visible when driving in the dark, wear the brightest possible clothing or clothes
with reflectors, and check that the reflectors mounted on the sides and rear of the wheelchair
are clearly visible.
Be careful with fire, especially burning cigarettes; the seat and back covers could be ignited.
Make sure that the maximum load is not exceeded.
SERVICE
Your lightweight wheelchair also requires servicing like any other technical product. The activities that
have to be performed to ensure that you would fully enjoy the advantages of your wheelchair even
after long periods of use, are described below.
BEFORE DRIVING OFF
-Check the tyres for visible damage and/or soiling. Clear the dirt, since it could impair the
operation of the parking brake. When a tyre is damaged, kindly go to an authorized
workshop for repairs (also refer to the chapter on "Tyre changing").
-Before driving off, check the effectiveness of the parking brakes. If they do not function
properly, consult your specialist dealer (see also the chapter on "Parking brakes").
-Check the pressure of the tyres and inflate them if necessary (refer also to the chapters
"Tyre changing" and "Technical details").

If the rolling resistance is too great, the wheel bearings have to be cleaned. If this is insufficient,
please consult your specialist dealer.
Repairs or the fitting of replacement parts should only be undertaken by your specialist dealer. Only
genuine parts may be used. We decline all liability for damage caused by the use of non-genuine parts
or accessories not supplied by the manufacturer.
INSPECTION
In principle we recommend annual inspections, but at least before usage is resumed. At least the
following checks must be performed and documented by authorized persons:
•Check the frame parts and the hinged tubes for plastic deformation and impaired functioning
•Visual inspection of damage to the paintwork (danger of corrosion)
•Check the operation of the wheels (free running, level rolling, axle play, tyres, profile, condition
of the rims, air pressure (in the case of pneumatic tyres), etc.
•Check the solidity and seating of all screws
•The greasing condition of metal joints or movable parts
•Visual checking of all plastic parts for tears and brittle spots
•Check the functioning of the armrests and leg supports (locking, loading, deformation, wear
and tear due to loading)
•Check the operation of other detachable parts (e.g. anti-tipping device, personal safety belt,
headrest, fitting of back/seat, container for walking stick)
•Completeness of the delivery condition
•Instruction manual available?
The service should only be confirmed in the "Service plan" if at least the above aspects have been
checked. If your specialist dealer does not undertake the services you require, kindly contact the
manufacturer. We will gladly refer you to authorized specialist dealers in your vicinity.
The manufacturer is not liable for damage caused by the lack of or improper service.
CARE
Your wheelchair requires regular care when you also want it to be visually attractive. Take note of the
following for this purpose:
COVERS
For cleaning the nylon and artificial leather covers use only a cloth moistened with warm water. Use a
mild commercial detergent for removing stubborn dirt. Stains can be removed by means of a sponge
or a soft brush.

Do not use aggressive cleaning liquids like solvents; neither should hard brushes be used.
We decline all liability for damage caused by using improper cleaning liquids or materials.
Do not soak the covers.
Steam cleaning is unsuitable for these covers, and its use would void your warranty claim.
PLASTIC PARTS
Treat all plastic parts of your wheelchair with commercially available plastic cleaners. Take note of any
special product information.
COATING
The high quality surface coating guarantees optimal corrosion protection. If the outer coat is damaged
by scratches or in other ways, treat the place with the varnish obtainable from your specialist dealer.
Occasional greasing of the movable parts (also refer to the section "Servicing") will ensure that you
enjoy your wheelchair for a long time.
Initially the chrome parts only require rubbing with a dry cloth. Dull spots or stubborn dirt can best be
removed by using a suitable commercial chrome polish.
Steel parts should be lightly greased with Vaseline to avoid premature dulling of the chromed
surfaces.
To ensure that your wheelchair will always be in a good condition, we recommend that you have it
inspected once a year by your specialist dealer. These inspections can be confirmed in the "Service
plan" section.
The manufacturer is not liable for damage or injury caused by improper servicing and care.
DISINFECTION
Only a hygiene technician or someone appointed by him can disinfect your wheelchair and this should
be done every time before the resumption of use.
All parts of the wheelchair can be disinfected by scrubbing. In principle all surfaces of a system or
product must be disinfected before handing it over to a new user, at least once a year (e.g. when it is
inspected) or when infections are detected in the user. Then the measures of the Federal Epidemic
Law must be applied.
Only authorized technicians trained in the functioning and application of disinfectants may
apply disinfectants.
Wear suitable protective clothing to prevent skin irritations that could be caused by the
disinfectant. Also note the product information of the solutions used.
You employ unauthorized persons at your own risk.
The wheelchair manufacturer declines all liability for damage and injury caused by improper
implementation of the disinfection.
